Antibiotics have a very important role in fighting bacterial infections in the body. However, the results given so far have not been optimal in overcoming the problem of bacterial infection. An alternative solution is to develop and study plants that have medicinal potential, for example thistle leaves (Calotrophis gigantean). The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of thistle leaf extract against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. This research is a laboratory-scale experimental research that is to test the activity of thistle leaf extract against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus including sample identification, extraction, activity testing by observing the inhibition zone of the two tested bacteria. Importantly to study the coastal vegetation from Kekara Laut (Canavalia maritima Thou.) to observe the antibacterial agents towards Staphylococcus epidermidis. The purpose of this study to examine the variation concentration effect of an ethanol leaf extract from Canavalia maritima Thou. in inhibiting the growth of S. epiderimidis bacteria. The leaf of Canavalia maritima Thou. was prepared using a physicochemical method to obtain ethanol extract, then varied in several concentrations, namely 5% w/v; 10% w/v; 15% w/v; and 20% w/v. Based on these results, we obtain the ethanol leaf extract can inhibit the growth of S. epidermidis with a concentration of 15% w/v for 24 hours having an inhibition zone of 17.17 mm. The statistical analysis test was very significantly different from all antibacterial tests, the value of F count was 682.1 with F table (3.48), at the level of α = 0.05 (3.48) and α = 0.01 (5.99), which indicates that H0 is rejected, but using the Variance method in the Newman-Keuls range approach shows that each concentration has a good inhibitory ability. The use of Canavalia maritima Thou. leaf extract in low concentrations can significantly inhibit bacterial growth (bacteriostatic).

Introduction: Endodontic treatment failure can be caused by the bacterium E. faecalis, which has a prevalence of up to 90%. E. faecalis is difficult to eradicate because it forms a biofilm to defend itself against antibacterial agents. Lime leaves are one of the many herbal products available in Indonesia (Citrus hystrix DC). Lime leaf extracts include antibacterial components such as essential oils, phenolics, alkaloids, saponins, and tannins. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antibacterial activity of lime leaf extract against E. faecalis bacterium. Material and Methods:The agar diffusion technique was used for four experimental groups, using lime leaf extract at 4% (group 1), 8% (group 2), and 16% (group 3) as the negative control. Each group was repeated six times on Muller Hinton Agar (MHA) medium with a paper disc, and the diameter of the inhibitory zone was measured with a caliper. Results and Discussions: The results revealed that a 4 % concentration of lime leaf extract had an average inhibition zone diameter of 7.31 mm, an 8 % concentration had an average inhibition zone diameter of 8.59 mm, and a 16 % concentration had an average inhibition zone diameter of 11.41 mm. The difference in the inhibition zone was statistically significant (p= 0,000) evaluated using the one-way ANOVA. Conclusion: It can be concluded that lime leaf extract is antibacterial potential against E. faecalis bacteria in the endodontic treatment.

Acne is one problem in adolescents and adults who can reduce self-confidence. This study aimed to formulate the combination cream of African leaf extract and palm oil leaves to determine the antibacterial activity of African leaf extract against several acne-causing bacteria (Propionibacterium acne and Staphylococcus epidermidis). Test antibacterial activity of extracts and cream with disc diffusion method. The cream is made with concentration of 5, 10 and 20% w/w. The evaluation results of cream with concentration of 5, 10 and 20% were physically stable for 4 weeks of storage at temperature room, homogeneous, pH and it did not cause irritation. Based on the test results, a combination of African leaf extract with concentration of 5% effectively inhibited bacterial growth with an average inhibition zone diameter of 12.06 mm for Propionibacterium acne bacteria and 13.63 mm for Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria. The result of this study suggest that combination of African leaf extract and palm leaves posses potent anti-bacterial activity against Propionibacterium acne and Staphylococcus epidermidis.

Soursop (Annona muricata L.) has been used for generations by some communities in Indonesia to treat diseases. Soursop leaves are used as an alternative treatment for cancer, by boiling them in the water and consuming it. In addition to the treatment of cancer, soursop plant is also used for the treatment of skin diseases such as boils. This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of soursop leaves of young and old against Staphylococcus aureus, determine the content of secondary metabolites, and find out the diameter of inhibitory young leaves and old leaves of soursop in inhibiting Staphylococcus aureus. Soursop leaves were extracted by maceration using ethanol 96%. The extract obtained was then carried out to phytochemical screening. Antibacterial activity test was conducted using disc the Kirby-Bauerdiffusion. This study used 6 concentrations of 500 mg/mL, 400 mg/mL, 300 mg/mL, 200 mg/mL, 100 mg/mL, 80 mg/mL, 60 mg/mL, 40 mg/mL, 20 mg/mL, 10 mg/mL and 1 mg/mL. A positive control used soursop leaf extract of young and old while a negative one used DMSO 10%. Based on phytochemical screening, ethanol extract of soursop leaves contained alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, steroids/triterpenoids and glycosides. The antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of leaves of young soursop was higher in inhibitory diameter than the ethanol extract of old soursop leaves. It could be seen that a concentration of 500 mg/mL was equal to 10.87 mm and 8.68 mm; a concentration of 400 mg/mL was equal to 9.15 mm and 7.3 mm; a concentration of 300 mg/mL was equal to 8.34 mm and 6.30 mm; a concentration of 200 mg/mL was equal to 8.23 mm and 7.08 mm; a concentration of 100 mg/mL was equal to 6.32 mm and 6.18 mm, and a concentration of 80 mg/mL did not leave a diameter inhibitory to bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. Young soursop leaf ethanol extract was more effective than the old soursop one against Staphylococcus aureus.

Ketapang (Terminalia catappa L.) is traditionally used by the community to treat infections of the skin caused by bacteria or fungi. In this study, T. catappa leaves extract was added to the liquid soap formula as an antibacterial. The purpose of this study was to determine the secondary metabolite compounds contained in T. catappa leaves extract, physical evaluation of the preparation, and antibacterial activity of liquid soap. Liquid soap formula is made with various concentrations of T. catappa leaves extract F0 (0%), F1 (1%), F2 (2%), and F3 (3%). The resulting soap was evaluated for organoleptic, pH, high foam, homogeneity, irritation, and its activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Escherichia coli using the disc diffusion method. The results showed that the T. catappa leaves extract contained flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and triterpenoids. The liquid soap formula F0 is clear, while F1, F2, and F3 have the characteristics of brown-dark brown, homogeneous, pH between 4.6-5.2, foam stability between 67-72%, which is not significantly different and stable after five minutes of testing, and it does not irritate the skin. Terminalia catappa leaves extracts liquid soap has antibacterial activity at a concentration of 1%, 2%, and 3%, with the largest inhibition zone diameter produced by S. aureus.
