Aluminum-silicon alloys acquiring extensive industrial attention due to their superior resistance to rate of wear and elevated strength to weight ratio properties. Though the properties of the materials substantially depend on the manufacturing process they involve. Thus many industries focusing on new manufacturing methods to produce high-performance alloys. In this present study, AlSi (16-18) alloys were prepared by new CRSS (combined rheo stir squeeze) casting method with rapid-solidification process under T-6 condition. CRSS-T6 as casting process enhances the microstructural and mechanical properties significantly by 40-70%. Whereas, the maximum value of hardness (179.37) was found with AlSi17Cu3.5Mg0.8 with CRSS-T6. The improvements in hardness and elastic properties were mainly ascribed to size, distribution, and morphology of Si-particles because of its manufacturing process. SEM, advanced metallurgical microstructure and EDS analysis techniques are used for the surface morphologies observation. Moreover, Brinell hardness tester and Tensometer are used for the characterization of mechanical properties

Additive manufacturing process is a method of layer by layer joining of materials to create components from three-dimensional (3D) model data. After their introduction in the automotive sector a decade ago, it has seen a significant rise in research and growth. The Additive manufacturing is classified into different types based upon the energy source use in the fabrication process. In our project, we used self-build CNC machine that runs MACH3 software, as well as the MACH3 controller is used to control the welding torch motion for material addition through three axis movement (X, Y and Z). In the project we used ER70 S-6 weld wire for the fabrication and examined its microstructure and mechanical properties. Different layers of the specimen had different microstructures, according to microstructural studies of the product. Rockwell hardness tester used for testing hardness of the product. According to the observation of the part fabricated components using the Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing process outperformed the mechanical properties of mild steel casting process. The product fabricated by Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing process properties is superior to conventional casting process.

Abstract With the growing complexity of integrated circuits (IC) comes the issue of quality control during the manufacturing process. In order to avoid late realization of design flaws which could be very expensive, the characterization of the mechanical properties of the IC components needs to be carried out in a more efficient and standardized manner. The effects of changes in the manufacturing process and materials used on the functioning and reliability of the final device also need to be addressed. Initial work on accurately determining several key mechanical properties of bonding pads, solder bumps and coatings using a combination of different methods and equipment has been summarized.

This paper reports the fabrication and characterization of (Bi0.48Sb1.52)Te3 thick films using a tape casting process on glass substrates. A slurry of thermoelectric (Bi0.48Sb1.52)Te3 was developed and cured thick films were annealed in a vacuum chamber at 500–600 °C. The microstructure of these films was analyzed, and the Seebeck coefficient and electric conductivity were tested. It was found that the subsequent annealing process must be carefully designed to achieve good thermoelectric properties of these samples. Conductive films were obtained after annealing and led to acceptable thermoelectric performance. While the properties of these initial materials are not at the level of bulk materials, this work demonstrates that the low-cost tape casting technology is promising for fabricating thermoelectric modules for energy conversion.

Design and fabrication of nanofibrous scaffolds should mimic the native extracellular matrix. This study is aimed at investigating electrospinning of polycaprolactone (PCL) blended with chitosan-gelatin complex. The morphologies were observed from scanning electron microscope. As-spun blended mats had thinner fibers than pure PCL. X-ray diffraction was used to analyze the degree of crystallinity. The intensity at two peaks at 2θof 21° and 23.5° gradually decreased with the percentage of chitosan-gelatin complex increasing. Moreover, incorporation of the complex could obviously improve the hydrophilicity of as-spun blended mats. Mechanical properties of as-spun nanofibrous mats were also tested. The elongation at break of fibrous mats increased with the PCL content increasing and the ultimate tensile strength varied with different weight ratios. The as-spun mats had higher tensile strength when the weight ratio of PCL to CS-Gel was 75/25 compared to pure PCL. Both as-spun PCL scaffolds and PCL/CS-Gel scaffolds supported the proliferation of porcine iliac endothelial cells, and PCL/CS-Gel had better cell viability than pure PCL. Therefore, electrospun PCL/Chitosan-gelatin nanofibrous mats with weight ratio of 75/25 have better hydrophilicity mechanical properties, and cell proliferation and thus would be a promising candidate for tissue engineering scaffolds.

ABSTRACTA homogeneous mixture of Y2O3, CeO2 and MgO with a final weight ratio of 3:1: 2 was prepared by the alkoxide method. The powder mixture was then added into Si3N4 powder in amounts ranging from 4 to 12 wt%, andconsolidated by hot-pressing. Microstructure and mechanical properties of the sintered bodies were determined and compared to those of materials prepared by the conventional route of mixing the oxide powders as sintering aids individually in essentially same composition. The β-fraction (modification ratio) in same composition was higher in thesintered bodies made through the alkoxide method than those made through the conventional one. The room temperature flexural strength was maximized with 6wt% addition of the alkoxide derived oxide, whereas, 12wt% addition of the total oxide was required to maximize the strength by conventional processing.

The Incremental Melting and Solidification Process (IMSP) is a relatively new field for material processing for the production of functionally graded materials. In this process a controlled liquid bath is maintained at the top of the component where new materials are added changing the components composition. Thus, a functionally graded material is obtained with a varying composition along one direction of the component. This paper deals with the influence of one of the process parameters, namely displacement rates between heating coil and mould, in order to evaluate its influence on both metallurgical and mechanical properties of different Al-Si alloys. Hardness and phase distribution, along the main castings axis, were measured. To better assess and characterize the process, two different Al-Si alloys with and without variation of chemical composition along the specimen were analysed. Results demonstrate that a gradual variation of metallurgical and mechanical properties along the component is obtained. It is also shown that Al-Si functionally graded materials can be produced by the incremental melting and solidification process. Results show that the displacement rate is very important on metallurgical and mechanical properties of the obtained alloy.

Abstract In this study, Al-0.80Mg-0.85Si alloy was modified with the addition of 0.3 wt.-% zirconium and the variation of microstructural features and mechanical properties were investigated. In order to produce the billets, vertical direct chill casting method was used and billets were homogenized at 580 °C for 6 h. Homogenized billets were subjected to aging practice following three stages: (i) solution annealing at 550 °C for 3 h, (ii) quenching in water, (iii) aging at 180 °C between 0 and 20 h. The hardness measurements were performed for the alloys following the aging process. It was observed that peak hardness value of Al-0.80Mg-0.85Si alloy increased with the addition of zirconium. This finding was very useful to obtain aging parameters for the extruded hollow profiles which are commonly used in automotive industry. Standard tensile tests were applied to aged profiles at room temperature and the results showed that modified alloy had higher mechanical properties compared to the non-modified alloy.

Polymer films of rice starch/Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were prepared by casting method. Different blends were made varying the concentration of rice starch and PVA. Tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (Eb) of the prepared films were studied. Films made up of rice starch and PVA with a ratio of 2:8 showed highest TS. 10% sugar was added with highest TS giving four composition of Starch/PVA blend in order to increase TS and Eb. Films made up of rice starch and PVA and sugar with a ratio of 1:8:1 showed highest TS and Eb and the recorded value was 14.96MPa and 637% respectively. The physico-mechanical properties of the prepared sugar incorporated films were improved by grafting with acrylic monomer with the aid of UV radiation. A formulation was prepared with monomer, methylmethacrylat in methanol, and a photo initiator. The highest TS of the grafted films were recorded and the value was 16.38 MPa. The water uptake and weight loss in both soil and water of the grafted films are lower than the non-grafted films. The prepared films were further characterized with stereo micrograph and XRD. Finally, the produced film can be used as biodegradable packaging materials for shopping and garbage bags that are very popular and environment friendly.

The present work investigates the mechanical characterization of aluminium alloy (AA) 6061 based hybrid nanometal matrix composites (MMCs) fabricated using conventional stir casting process. Two compositions viz., AA6061+1.5 wt.% B4C+0.5 wt.% SiC (Hybrid A) and AA6061+1.5 wt.% B4C+1.5 wt.% SiC (Hybrid B) was prepared and its mechanical properties such as microhardness, tensile, compressive, flexural and impact strength were investigated to compare with unreinforced AA6061. SiC and B4C ceramic particles (purity 99.89%) of average particle size of 50 nm were used as reinforcements. Significant enhancement in microhardness of 30.2% and 31.02% for hybrid A and B are observed respectively. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) increased by 10.72% and 16.55% for hybrid A and B respectively. Improved interaction because of the enhanced surface to volume ratio at the interface resulted in improvement of mechanical properties. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) of the fractured surface shows brittle fracture because of the incorporation of the ceramic reinforcements in the matrix material. The developed AA6061/SiC/B­4C hybrid nanocomposites show improved mechanical properties for high-performance structural applications.

In this paper, nanocrystalline diamond with the average grain size of 50nm was prepared under different sintering pressure, temperature and sintering time. The microstructure of the sample was analyzed by SEM, EDS and XRD, and the mechanical properties tested by micro-hardness tester and wear ratio instrument. The results show that the sample sintered under the optimum conditions of oil pressure 87MPa, heating power 4000W and sintering time 120s possessed hardness of 706.41HV and wear ratio of 3280. It indicated that high performance n-PCD sintered from nanodiamond and silicon system can be formed hardly with diamond to diamond bonding but can be formed with diamond to silicon carbide bonding. The poor mechanical properties of the samples were due to the surface adsorption groups and surface graphitization of nanodiamond during high pressure sintering.
