Generally, fatty hydroxamic acids (FHA) are synthesized from basic ingredients containing fatty acids.Fatty acids can be obtained from coconut oil among several other sources. Coconut oil contains fatty acids with medium and long chains so it has enormous potential as a raw material for the synthesis of hydroxamic fatty acids. The purpose of this research is to synthesize FHA from coconut oil enzymatically and determine the amount of FHA products produced. The method used is the enzymatic method which includes several stages of work, namely the synthesis stage, the multiplication stage, and the purification stage. From the research results, the percentage obtained from the synthesis was around 48.58% of hydroxamic fatty acids from coconut oil after propagation using the synthesis conditions.The number of hydroxamic acid groups in 1 gram of dry hydroxamic fatty acid sample was 2.97 mmol. Thus, from the two results mentioned above, it was concluded that hydroxamic fatty acids can be synthesized from coconut oil

Surfactant which is used as raw emulsifier in an industry activity such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfonate is a raw material import, it is petroleum derivative which is not renewable and may cause pollution to the environment, because it is not degraded and are carcinogenic. The purpose of the research is to compare the characteristics of the Quaternary methyl ester sulfonat (MES) and Sodium Lauryl Sulfonat (SLS) as emulsifier. First, make the MES by filtering and eliminating fatty acids of palm oil, then process the MES with enzymatic method become methyl ester, then react it in sulfonation and metanolization process, and also neutralized with NaOH. Next, the MES experiment is compared with SLS and existing MES in the market. The results show that surfactants MES experiment has value hidrofil lipofil balance (HLB) interfacial tension and emulsion stability greater than MES in the market and SLS. And the surface tension of MES experiment is larger than MES in the market, but smaller compared to SLS.ABSTRAKSurfaktan yang digunakan sebagai bahan baku emulsifer dalam aktivitas suatu industri pada saat ini seperti Sodium Lauril Sulfonat  merupakan bahan baku import yang merupakan turunan dari minyak bumi, dengan sifat tidak dapat diperbaharui dan dapat menimbulkan pencemaran terhadap lingkungan karena tidak mudah terdegradasi serta bersifat karsinogenik. Metil ester sulfonat dari bahan minyak sawit merupakan surfaktan dengan sifat mudah terdegradasi yang perlu diketahui karakteristiknya. Penelitian bertujuan untuk membandingkan karakteristik surfaktan metil ester sulfonat (MES) dan Sodium Lauril Sulfonat (SLS) sebagai bahan emulsifier. Mula-mula dilakukan pembuatan MES dengan cara menyaring dan menghilangkan asam lemak minyak sawit terlebih dahulu, kemudian diolah menjadi metil ester secara enzimatis, lalu direaksikan secara sulfonasi dan metanolisis, serta dinetralkan dengan NaOH. Selanjutnya MES hasil percobaan dibandingkan dengan SLS dan MES yang ada dipasaran. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa surfaktan MES memiliki nilai hidrofil lipofil balance (HLB) tegangan antar muka dan stabilitas emulsi lebih besar apabila dibandingkan dengan MES di pasaran dan SLS, kecuali nilai stabilitas emulsi antara MES dan SLS sama. Dan tegangan permukaan MES hasil percobaan, lebih besar dibandingkan dengan MES dipasaran, dan lebih kecil dibandingkan dengan SLS. Kata kunci :   Metil  ester sulfonat, hidrofil lipofil balance, emulsifier, sodium lauril sulfonat , stabilitas emulsi

Background: Coconut oil is an edible oil obtained from fresh, mature coconut kernels. Few studies have reported the anticancer role of coconut oil. The fatty acid component of coconut oil directly targets the liver by portal circulation and as chylomicron via lymph. However, the anti-cancer activity of coconut oil against liver cancer cells and oral cancer cells is yet to be tested. The active component of coconut oil, that is responsible for the anticancer activity is not well understood. In this study, three different coconut oils, Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO), Processed Coconut Oil (PCO) and Fractionated Coconut Oil (FCO), were used. Objective: Based on previous studies, it can be hypothesized that fatty acids in coconut oil may have anticancer potential and may trigger cell death in cancer cell lines. Methods: Each cell line was treated with different concentrations of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO), Processed Coconut Oil (PCO) and Fractionated Coconut Oil (FCO). The treated cells were assayed by MTT after 72 hr of incubation. The fatty acid composition of different coconut oils was analyzed by gas chromatography. Result: Different concentrations of coconut oils were used to treat the cells. Interestingly, the anticancer efficacy of VCO, PCO and FCO was not uniform, rather the efficacy varied from cell line to cell line. Only 20% VCO showed significant anticancer activity in HepG2 cells in comparison to 80% PCO against the KB cell line. Remarkably, 20% of PCO and 5% of FCO showed potential growth inhibition in the KB cell line as compared to 80% PCO in HepG2 cells. Moreover, there was a difference in the efficacy of VCO, PCO and FCO, which might be due to their fatty acid composition. Comparing the anticancer efficacy of VCO, PCO and FCO in this study helped to predict which class of fatty acids and which fatty acid might be associated with the anticancer activity of VCO. Conclusion: This study shows that VCO, PCO and FCO have anticancer efficacy and may be used for the treatment of cancer, especially liver and oral cancer.

Abstract Objectives Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) represents the major cause of pediatric chronic liver pathology in the United States. The objective of this study was to compare the relative effect of inclusion of isocaloric amounts of saturated medium-chain fatty acids (hydrogenated coconut oil), saturated long-chain fatty acids (lard) and unsaturated long-chain fatty acids (olive oil) on endpoints of NAFLD and insulin resistance. Methods Thirty-eight 15-d-old Iberian pigs were fed 1 of 4 diets containing (g/kg body weight × d) 1) control (CON; n = 8): 0 g fructose, 10.5 g fat, and 187 kcal metabolizable energy (ME), 2) lard (LAR; n = 10): 21.6 g fructose, 17.1 g fat (100% lard) and 299 kcal ME, 3) hydrogenated coconut oil (COCO; n = 10): 21.6 g fructose, 16.9 g fat (42.5% lard and 57.5% coconut oil) and 299 kcal ME, and 4) olive oil (OLV, n = 10): 21.6 g fructose, 17.1 g fat (43.5% lard and 56.5% olive oil) and 299 kcal ME, for 9 consecutive weeks. Body weight was recorded every 3 d. Serum markers of liver injury and dyslipidemia were measured on d 60 at 2 h post feeding, with all other serum measures assessed on d 70. Liver tissue was collected on d 70 for histology, triacylglyceride (TG) quantification, and metabolomics analysis. Results Tissue histology indicated the presence of steatosis in LAR, COCO and OLV compared with CON (P ≤ 0.001), with a further increase in in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) in OLV and COCO compared with LAR (P ≤ 0.01). Alanine and aspartate aminotransferases were higher in COCO and OLV (P ≤ 0.01) than CON. All treatment groups had lower liver concentrations of methyl donor's choline and betaine versus CON, while bile acids were differentially changed (P ≤ 0.05). COCO had higher levels of TGs with less carbons (Total carbons < 52) than all other groups (P ≤ 0.05). Several long-chain acylcarnitines involved in fat oxidation were higher in OLV versus all other groups (P ≤ 0.05). Conclusions Inclusion of fats enriched in medium-chain saturated and long-chain unsaturated fatty acids in a high-fructose high-fat diet increased liver injury, compared with fats with a long-chain saturated fatty acid profile. Palado (Aglaia sp) is a plant that grows wild in the forest around Mamuju regency of West Sulawesi, Indonesia. This plant is locally known as palado. Palado seeds (Aglaia sp) can be used as a source of vegetable oil because it contains approximately 14.75 % oil, and it has the potential to be used as food ingredients or as raw material for oil production. The purpose of this study was to determine the chemical properties and the composition of fatty acids contained in palado seed oil (Aglaia sp). The employed method involved the use of palado fruit that had been processed to be palado seed and undergoing flouring process. Palado flour was produced by the extraction process by using chloroform solvent with the soxhlet method. The characteristics of the chemical properties in the oil produced were analyzed by using a standard method, including iodine, saponification, and acid values. The analysis of fatty acid composition was conducted by using gas chromatography. The results showed that palado oil extracted with hexane had an iodine value of 15.38 mg/g, saponification value of 190.01 mg KOH/g, and acids value of 1.961 mg KOH/g. The fatty acid composition of the palado seed oil consisted of saturated fatty acids (41.601 %), which included palmitic acid (41.062 %), myristic acid (0.539 %), and unsaturated fatty acids (45.949 %), which included mono-unsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) such as (22.929 %), oleic acid and poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), which was linoleic acid (23.020 %).

Mucosal lipids were isolated from the proximal, middle, and distal intestinal sections of rats fed diets containing either 10% corn oil or 10% hydrogenated coconut oil, the latter diet being deficient in essential fatty acids. By a combination of column and thin-layer chromatography, the lipids were fractionated and the major components found to consist of triglycerides, free fatty acids, cholesterol, phosphatidylcholine, and phosphatidylethanolamine. Several minor constituents were present. Triglycerides and free fatty acids were generally present in higher concentrations in animals fed corn oil, and the concentration of mucosal triglycerides decreased towards the distal end of the intestine whereas free fatty acids increased in this group. Essential fatty acid deficiency resulted in lower levels of linoleic and arachidonic acids and higher levels of palmitoleic, oleic, and eicosatrienoic acids in the mucosal lipids. Mono- and di-enoic fatty acids tended to decrease in concentration from the proximal to the distal end of the intestine; the polyunsaturated acids and, to some extent, the saturated acids, were lowest in the proximal section of the intestine.

Biofuels including biodiesel, an alternative fuel, is renewable, environmentally friendly, non-toxic and lowemission energy. The raw material used in this work was coconut oil, which contained saturated fatty acids about90% with medium chain (C8-C12), especially lauric acid and myristic acid. Reaction was conducted in batchreactor assisted by microwave. The purpose of this research was to study the effect of power and NaOH catalystin transesterification enhanced by microwave and to obtain a biofuels (biodiesel and biokerosene) derived fromcoconut oil. The reaction was performed by mixing oil and methanol with mole ratio of 1:6, catalystconcentration of 1% w/w with setting electrical power at 100, 264, 400, 600 and 800 W. The reaction time wasconditioned at of 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10 and 15 min. The results showed that microwave could accelerate thetransesterification process to produce biodiesel using NaOH catalyst. The highest yield of biodiesel was 97.76 %,or 99.05 % conversion at 5 min reaction, meanwhile biokerosene was 48% after distillation.

Many contradictory results have been published on the stability of total non-esterified fatty acids in blood, plasma and serum under different storage conditions. The present study was undertaken to investigate the stability of non-esterified fatty acids, measured with an enzymatic method, in samples of EDTA-treated plasma and serum under different temperature conditions. We conclude that EDTA-treated plasma and serum can both be used for analysis. Specific reference values should be established depending on the type of sample chosen. Samples that cannot be analysed immediately can be stored at -20°C for at least 14 days without significant changes in the concentration of total non-esterified fatty acids. None of the other storage conditions and periods studied are suitable for the measurement of non-esterified fatty acid concentration.

1. The butterfat in a whole-milk diet was replaced by either beef tallow, coconut oil or soya-bean oil. The diets contained 280 g fat and 720 g dried skim milk per kg and were supplemented with vitamins A, D, E and K.2. These diets were offered as a milk, containing 200 g solids/Kg, to pigs weaned at 2 d of age during a 26 d experiment. The pigs were fed at hourly intervals to a scale based on live weight (scale E).3. The performance of the pigs and the apparent digestibility of the dietary fats indicated that soya-bean oil was equal to butterfat. Butterfat was slightly superior to coconut oil and markedly superior to beef tallow.4. The amount and composition of the fatty acids were studied in the proximal, mid and distal portions of the small intestine. When the beef tallow diet was given there was an increased amount of total fatty acids in the digesta of the small intestine, mainly in the distal portion. The digesta contained the smallest quantity of fatty acids when the soya-bean oil diet was given. The fatty acid composition of the digesta indicated that the short- and medium chain fatty acids from all the diets were well utilized, but an increasing proportion of stearic acid occurred in the distal portion of the small intestine. The interpretation of changes in fatty acid composition in the digesta in relation to absorption is discussed.

Crude coconut oil with high free fatty acid (FFA) content was used as a raw material to produce biodiesel. In this work, the esterification followed by transesterification of crude coconut oil with methanol is studied. The response surface methodology (RSM) with 5-level-3-factor central composite design (CCD) was applied to study the effect of different factors on the FFA content of esterification and the percentage of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) conversion of transesterification. The FAME conversion was detected by proton magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectrometer. As a result, the optimum conditions for esterification were 6:1 of methanol-to-oil molar ratio, 0.75wt% of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) concentration and 90 min of reaction time. The optimum conditions for transesterification were 8.23:1 of methanol-to-oil molar ratio, 0.75wt% of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration and 80 min of reaction time. Quadratic model equations were obtained describing the relationships between dependents and independent variables to minimize the FFA content and maximize the FAME conversion. Fuel properties of the crude coconut oil biodiesel were also examined followed ASTM and EN standards. The results showed that all properties met well with both standards.

Abstrak. Merkaptoetil karboksilat merupakan bahan baku stabiliser termal polivinil klorida atau polyvinyl chloride (PVC) berbasis timah organik. Stabiliser termal perlu ditambahkan ke dalam resin PVC sebelum diekstrusi untuk mencegah kerusakan karena pengerjaan panas. Stabiliser termal PVC dari timah organik dikenal sangat efektif, khususnya untuk aplikasi PVC kaku seperti pipa dan bingkai jendela. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengevaluasi sintesis merkaptoetil karboksilat dari asam lemak dan merkapto etanol dengan variasi sumber asam lemak yang meliputi asam lemak sawit, dedak padi dan biji kapuk. Percobaan dilakukan dalam sebuah reaktor partaian (batch) dengan asam kuat sebagai katalis. Percobaan dilakukan pada temperatur 60-80°C dan ekses merkapto etanol 10%. Kinerja sintesis dievaluasi melalui pengukuran kadar gugus merkaptan dan angka asam dalam produk serta perolehan produk. Pada rentang temperatur 60-80°C, ketiga asam lemak memberikan produk dengan kadar merkaptan pada rentang 6,4-7,8%.  Temperatur 70°C merupakan temperatur terbaik karena menghasilkan produk dengan kadar merkaptan tertinggi tanpa memadat selama penyimpanan. Pada temperatur ini, produk memiliki angka asam pada rentang 11-41 mg KOH/g dan perolehan pada rentang 70-81%. Ketiga sumber asam lemak memberikan produk dengan kadar merkaptan yang mencukupi untuk dapat digunakan sebagai bahan baku stabiliser PVC. Mempertimbangkan kualitas produk dan ketersediaan di pasaran, distilat asam lemak sawit dipandang sebagai bahan baku yang paling baik. Kata kunci: asam lemak, merkaptoetil karboksilat, polivinil klorida, stabiliser termal. Abstract. Synthesis of Mercaptoethyl Carboxylate as Raw Materials for Polyvinyl Chloride Thermal Stabilizer: Variation in Fatty Acid Source. Mercaptoethyl carboxylate is a raw material for organotin-based polyvinyl chloride (PVC) thermal stabilizer. Thermal stabilizers need to be added to the PVC resin before extruded to prevent degradation due to heat treatment. Organotin PVC stabilizers are known to be very effective, especially for rigid PVC applications such as pipes and frames. This study was aimed to evaluate the synthesis of mercaptoethyl carboxylate from fatty acids and mercaptoethanol with various sources of fatty acids including palm, rice bran and kapok seed fatty acids. The experiment was carried out in a batch reactor with a strong acid as a catalyst. The experiments were conducted at 60-80°C and 10% mercapto ethanol excess. The performance of synthesis was evaluated by measuring mercaptan and acid contents and yield. In the range of 60-80°C, all three fatty acids provided products with mercaptan levels in the range of 6.4-7.8%. A temperature of 70°C is the best temperature as it gave a product with the highest mercaptan content without solidification during storage. At this temperature, the product had acid values in the range 11-41 mg KOH/g and yields in the range of 70-81%. Considering product quality and availability in the market, palm fatty acid distillate was seen as the best raw material. Keywords: fatty acid, mercaptoethyl carboxylate, polyvinyl chloride, thermal stabilizer. Graphical Abstract
