This study is focused on assessing the   ability of the first semester students of English Department,  Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Mahasaraswati Denpasar University   in academic year 2009/2010 in mastering English grammar. This study was intended to answer the Research Question: ‘To what extent is the acquisition of English grammar mastery of the first semester students of English Department, the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Mahasaraswati Denpasar University  in academic year 2009/2010?. The data required were collected by administering the valid and reliable research instrument in form of multiple choice test. Then,  the data were analyzed by using Norm Reference Measures of five standard values. The population  of the study is the first semester students of English Department in the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Mahasaraswati Denpasar University  which consists of 120 students. They are considered to have heterogeneous characteristics. There were 30 students determined as the sample of the study   using quota random sampling technique. The result of the data analysis   showed that (1)  13.33% out of the whole subjects under study showed excellent ability in mastering grammar, (2)   6.66%   showed good ability, (3) 53.33%  showed sufficient ability,  (4) 23.33% showed insufficient ability , (5) 3.33% showed poor ability in mastering grammar. If the result of the study were used as the bases to assign level to the subjects under study, then  26.66% fail in learning and acquiring English grammar. It means that 26.66% of them still have low ability. The finding of the present study was trusted to have rather limited degree of validity and reliability because it was conducted using an ex post facto research design and it has some inherent independent variables which contaminate the validity and reliability of the findings. The findings of the study can be used as the bases in planning  better language teaching especially in mastering grammar.

This study aims at comparing the TOEFL scores of the English Department students at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Cenderawasih University. The questions that need to be answered are first, whether there are any differences of TOEFL scores amongst English department students from different semesters. Secondly, whether there are any different scores between male and female students, third between the students with different learning backgrounds, and forth between students with different levels of interest in English. The participants are the students of semester 2, semester 4, semester 6, and semester 8, commencing in the academic year 2017/2018. TOEFL prediction test was given to the participants to get the scores. The scores of each variable were then compared by the application of ANOVA and t-test.  The result of this study can give a picture of how English teaching can be improved.

The present study dealt with An Analysis of Grammatical Errors bythe eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kuta Utara in academic year 2016/ 2017. The researcher interested in analyzing kinds of errors because the errors were made by students should be corrected so not to become fossilized. The total amount of population which consisted of 12 classes were 384 students all together. The amount of population was determined by using quota random sampling technique. The number of representative students which used as subjet under study was 40 students. The present study which made use of an ex-post facto research design was intended to answer the following research questions: what kind of grammatical errors which is made by the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kuta Utara in academic year 2016/ 2017 in constructing direct and indirect speech. The data required for the study were collected by using grammatical transformation tasks. In the grammatical transformation tasks, the students were asked to change direct speech to indirect speech or vice versa by the correct grammatical forms in the sentences. The result revealed that there were 303 errors made by the students. From the total number of students’ errors, the researcher found that there were four types of errors. There were 43(14,19%)of omission error, there were 29(9,57%)of addition errors, there were 58(19,14%)of malformation errors, and there were 173(57,09%)of disordering errors. The finding of present study was many students who weredifficultto answerdirect and indirect speech. They lacked of knowledge and inability in mastering English grammar so many mistakes were made by them.

This study was undertaken in order to assess the acquisition of information questions by the eleventh grade students of SMK Saraswati Denpasar in academic year 2009/2010. The undertaking of the study was motivated by the fact that information questions are the fundamental basis of good communication skills in English. This study was intended to answer the research question: To what extent is the acquisition of the eleventh grade students of SMK Saraswati Denpasar in constructing information question in English. This study made use of an ex-post facto research design. The population of the study was the eleventh grade students of accountancy department which consists of two classes with the total students of 79 altogether. They were considered to have homogeneous characteristic. In this study, only 40 students were determined as the objects by using quota random sampling technique with lottery system. The data obtained in the study which were in the form of raw scores showing the subjects’ acquisition of information questions of the eleventh grade students of SMK Saraswati Denpasar, were analyzed with norm reference measure with five standard values. It clearly showed that: (1) there are 5 subjects (12.5%) out of 40 subjects under study who got excellent ability in asking information questions in English, (2) there are 11 subjects (27.5%) out of 40 subjects under study who got good ability in asking information questions in English. (3) there are 13 subjects (32.5%) out of 40 subjects under study who got sufficient ability in asking information questions in English and (4) there are 11 subjects (27.5%) out of 40 subjects under study who got insufficient ability in asking information questions in English. In general these research findings revealed that the acquisition of information questions by the eleventh grade students of SMK Saraswati Denpasar is remarked as good, where the number of subjects who got insufficient acquisition in information questions were under 50% or half of the number of subjects understudy. The number of students who got insufficient acquisition in information questions is only 11 subjects or 27.5% out of 40 subjects understudy. The findings of the study have limited validity and reliability, because it made use of an ex-post facto research design. Therefore, the research findings should be carefully depended upon.

Abstract: Today students’ are sometime less interested in understanding active and passive voice, so that when they learn it, there is a lot of incomprehension in understanding it, especially in transforming active to passive voice. This research are to know and to find out the most dominant the students’ difficulties in transforming active to passive voice form at fourth semester students’ STAIN Gajah Putih Takengon Aceh in 2017/2018 Academic Year. This study was conducted using a qualitative approach. The source of the data for this study was taken at fourth semester students’ of English Department of STAIN GP Takengon Aceh. Besides, the source of data in this research also a grammar lecturer. The technique of data collection were used observation, documentation, and  interviews technique. The data analysis were used the Miles and Huberman’s models, including reduction of data, display, and conclusions; drawing/verifying. The outcomes of analysis, the researcher found the most dominant students’ difficulties in changing active to passive voice were: difficulties in determining subject, difficulties in using auxiliary verb be, and difficulties in using verb3 in passive voice and most dominant difficulties was found in form of past continuous they are not able to understand well, due to still use tools (dictionary). Based on the findings of this study, the researcher concluded that some students’ have a fairly good ability in understanding passive voice form, but some of the other students’ must also improve their understanding in English grammar. Keywords: Active and Passive Voice, Analysis, Students’ Difficulties   Abstrak: Dewasa ini mahasiswa terkadang kurang tertarik untuk memahami bentuk active dan passive voice, sehingga ketika mereka mempelajarinya, ada banyak kesulitan dalam memahaminya, terutama dalam mengubah bentuk active menjadi passive. Penelitian ini untuk melihat dan mengetahui kesulitan paling dominan dalam mengubah bentuk active menjadi passive mahasiswa semester empat prodi bahasa Inggris STAIN Gajah Putih Takengon Aceh pada Tahun Akademik 2017/2018. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Sumber data penelitian ini diambil dari mahasiswa semester empat prodi bahasa Inggris STAIN Gajah Putih Takengon Aceh dan dosen prodi. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan teknik observasi, dokumentasi, dan wawancara. Analisis data menggunakan model Miles dan Huberman. Hasil analisis, peneliti menemukan kesulitan siswa yang paling dominan dalam mengubah active menjadi passive adalah: kesulitan dalam menentukan subjek, mengunakan auxiliary verb be, dan kesulitan dalam menggunakan kata kerja bentuk ke 3, dan  yang paling dominan ditemukan kesulitan dalam merubah past continuous, sehingga membutuhkan alat (kamus). Berdasarkan temuan penelitian ini, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa beberapa mahasiswa memiliki kemampuan yang cukup baik dalam memahami bentuk passive, tetapi beberapa siswa lain harus meningkatkan pemahaman mereka dalam tata bahasa Inggris. This purpose of study analyzed mobile learning application using by Dangle tool through Islamic values for students of English department at Faculty of Teacher Training and Education in University of Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara. Research method conducted descriptive qualitative. Population conducted of 136 students 4th semester of English department in 2019/2020 academic year in University of Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara. Sample of 32 students taken Curriculum Design Material subject of English department at Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. The technique of collecting data used observation and documentation during the learning process. Data collection method carried out using by the spiral model of Kemmis and Mc and Taggart, these were; Action planning, treatment / observation of action, reflection and revision. The results of study showed the students can use the dongle properly and enthusiastically used it in the class of assignment presentation. M-learning application of dongle tool should be carried out in all classes in University of Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara to advance learning technology.

The study aims at designing EFL instructional materials used in EFL class at English Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education at a university in Indonesia. The design is based on the results of evaluation and analysis on the instructional materials used in Curriculum and Material Development Class by applying Instructional Design (ID) element instruments evaluation. The study employed a developmental research (R&D) design involving a group of students programming the Curriculum and Material Development class in 2014/2015 academic year. The results of the evaluation and analysis on the instructional materials revealed that the instructional materials for the Curriculum and Material Development class were based on handbook adapted from textbooks which were commercially created. Based on the results of the evaluation and analysis, instructional materials were developed employing Dick and Carey ID elements. The results of the implementation of the designed instructional materials to a group of 35 EFL learners are reported and discussed.

The objectives of this study were (1) to describe the effect of rules of three on persuasive public speaking presentation in speaking class and (2) to identify kinds of rules of three used by students in speaking class. The method of the study was descriptive study. Population of the study was all fourth semester students of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education in English Department in UNRIKA Kepulauan Riau Batam in Academic Year 2015/2016. The sample of this study was 24 students of fourth semester of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education in English Department in UNRIKA Kepulauan Riau Batam in Academic Year 2015/2016. The data was collected by using CD-RW form of presentation submitted by students. The data was analyzed and described by using Speech Evaluation Form which consisted of delivery of the speech and structure of the speech. It was identifiedthat only one group used rules of three in their group’s persuasive public speaking presentation and it made their speech more focus and understandable while other three groups ignored the rules of three in their persuasive public speaking presentation and it led to the message of the speech went nowhere as the audience caught many aspects inside it too broad. If rules of three used in persuasive public speaking, then it will bring them to success and possible for any of them who wants to be the next top-paid public speaker if they know how to use that technique during their speech ratherin the future.  Keywords: rules of three, persuasive,  public speaking presentation

This study aims to determine the effect of lecturer competence and commitment on their teaching performance during the Covid-19 pandemic which was remotely (online) carried out through the e-learning website. The respondents were 80 permanent lecturers of the faculty of teacher training and education. A quantitative approach with ex post facto study design and path analysis with SPSS v.21 was used. The results showed that the competence variable had a higher influence of 14.5% while commitment was 7.8%. Therefore, 30.9% determined their teaching performance during the Covid-19 pandemic from the contribution of competence and commitment, while 69.1% was from other variables outside the study.
