METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional approach to 91 subjects at the Dharma Asri Binjai Nursing Home Social Service starting from June to July 2020 utilizing sampling, namely, simple random sampling. The tests conducted in this study consisted of a bivariate test and a multivariate linear regression test to determine which factors are associated with depression. The measuring instrument used was the GDS 15. RESULTS: After the multivariate test was carried out, the variables that were statistically significant to the total score of depression in the elderly at the Binjai Dharma Asri nursing home were Gender (p < 0.001) and activity of daily living (ADL) Score (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The factors associated with the GDS score of 15 and the occurrence of depression in the elderly were found in the gender variable and the ADL score variable.

Nursing homes are the facilities where the elderly conduct their daily activities. This may lead to a complicated acoustic environment which would potentially affect the ability of the elderly to function. In this study, the main indoor public space of a nursing home in Harbin was taken as the research object, and the methods of field observation, sound measurement, and questionnaire survey were used to explore the sound perception and preference of the elderly. The results revealed that in terms of the temporal and spatial distribution of sound pressure level (SPL), the unit living space had the highest SPL, which was above 60 dB (A). The reverberation time (RT) of the unit living space, medical and health care center corridor, was 2.15 and 2.13 s, respectively, at a frequency of 1,000 Hz, which was within the discomfort range. The results also revealed that an acoustic environment had a strong correlation with humidity and a weak correlation with temperature. However, no significant correlation could be assessed with a luminous environment. The elderly people were generally willing to accept the natural sound sources. The factors of gender and offspring numbers had no significant impact on the evaluation of acoustic environment comfort, whereas marriage and income status affected the comfort. This study may help improve the quality of life of the elderly in the nursing home and provide a reference for the construction and design of pension facilities.

Objectives: Physical disability to perform daily living activities is one of the major causes of depression in the elderly people. On the other hand, depression is associated with loss of interest in daily activities and lack of independence. The present study aimed to assess the relationship of depression with the ability to perform Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) in older adults in Iran. Methods & Materials: This cross-sectional study was performed on 148 elderly people aged ≥60 years who were selected by multi-stage cluster sampling method. Data were collected by using ADL, IADL, and 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) questionnaires and were then presented by using descriptive statistics and analyzed by Chi-square test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and regression analysis. Results: Participants were 86 female (58.1%) and 62 male (41.9%); 109 (73.6%) aged 60-75 years, and the rest were older than 75 years; 71 (48%) had moderate or severe depression; 4(2.7%) and 61(41.2%) were dependent or in need of help performing ADL and IADL, respectively. Statistical analysis showed that depression has a significant negative correlation with ADL (r= -0.304, P<0.001) and IADL (r=-0.193, P>0.01); i.e. by increasing one of them, the depression decreases. Conclusion: The ability of the elderly people to perform ADL and IADL can be a good predictor of depression in them. With early assessment of their health and ability by health teams and family members, it is possible to prevent the development of their disability and depression.

Background: Very few studies have shown the possible relationship between magnesium (Mg) status and depression. In the present study, the intracellular Mg status of the elderly population living in nursing homes (NHs) was assessed to determine its relationship with depression. Methods: A descriptive-analytical study was conducted on the elderly population living in nursing homes (Tehran-Iran; 2010-2012). Participants' demographic and clinical characteristics were collected and recorded in a checklist. Evaluating the participants’ nutritional status, Mini Nutritional Assessment Method was implemented. Determining participant's depressive symptoms, 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale was used. Final scores were classified into4 categories not depressed, mild, moderate, and severe depression. Mg level in leukocytes was also measured by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Results: Totally 113 elderly were included and only 9.8% of subjects were not depressed. About 21% of the subjects were well nourished. Of participants who suffered from heart disease, 80.2% were depressed (p=0.03). Regarding correlations between Mg status and depression, results showed no significant difference in Mg levels of two depressed and non-depressed participants (p=0.73). Conclusion: The results of the present study showed notable prevalence rates of depression and malnutrition among nursing home residents. It was also found that the relationship between intracellular Mg levels and depression was not significant. Further studies are needed to determine the major factors related to these preventable psychological and nutritional disorders among elderly NH residents.

Meanwhile WHO in 2020 reports, worldwide, around 50 million people suffer from dementia, and there are nearly 10 million new cases every year. Elderly people with dependency such as dementia requires personal care with more time and supervision, all of these relate to the burden of nurses and the higher costs. The example of the solution that problem is acupuncture treatment for dementia. Acupuncture research in Alzheimer's cases, including a decrease cognitive level or dementia, acupuncture can improve verbal, motor, cognitive abilities, and mood. But until now acupuncture is still very rarely used for this case. The aim this research is to determine the effect of stimulation on Skin, Connective tissue, Aponeurosis, Loose areolar, Pericranium (SCALP) acupuncture with electro stimulation on reduce elder dementia rate in Aisyiyah Nursing Home of Surakarta. Methods: The study was conducted at Aisyiyah Nursing Home of Surakarta for 2 months. Dementia rate measured with Mental Mini State Examination (MMSE) and analyze with a cross-sectional approach and with a one-group pretest-posttest research design. There are 15 elderly people as research subjects, using purposive sampling techniques. Needle insertion in this research performed at the Brain point Yamamoto New SCALP Acupuncture (YNSA). Results: The average age of the elderly in Aisyiyah Nursing Home of Surakarta is 72.4 years and has a risk of cognitive decline or dementia. The average of dementia rate measured with Mental Mini State Examination (MMSE) scores before treatment was 21 (dementia) and the average of MMSE score after treatment was 26.3 (normal category). Paired T-test was obtained p <0.05 which means there is an influence of SCALP Acupuncture with electro stimulation on reduce elder dementia rate. Conclusion: There is an effect of the procedure of SCALP acupuncture with electrostimulation therapy to reduce elder dementia rate which is marked by an increase in the value of MMSE score after therapy.
