AbstractWe describe and evaluate our practice-based learning approach for research in undergraduate students studying Biomedical Sciences at Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands. First-year students who started their study between 2015 and 2018 actively participated in data collection and measurements, including anthropometry, electrocardiogram findings, genetic variants, and lifestyle habits. All data were entered into one anonymous database, which was used by students to analyze their research questions. In 2019, 44 of the 87 students (50%) valued active measurements better than questionnaires. Most students (strongly) agreed that they have learned about data collection and were inspired to learn more about biomedical research.

This article reviews the data collection process. This process is of crucial importance because data offer empirical answers to theoretical research questions. Although the literature provides a wealth of instruction on the treatment of already collected data, far less has been written about the selection of the data. The present view focuses on this overlooked portion of research methodology. An actual illustration is used to demonstrate the factual decisions and procedures that may be used in any data collection process.

Students’ dependence on guessing so as to pass their examinations prompted this study on Undergraduate Students’ Achievement in GST 101 using Corrected Scores and Uncorrected Scores. The study involved the entire students of the first year undergraduate students of the Department of Guidance and Counselling, Delta State University, Abraka, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. Four research questions and three null hypotheses guided the study. Scores obtained by the subjects in the 2018/2019 GST 101 examination were used in the study. Two sets of scores namely, uncorrected scores and corrected scores were analysed using independent samples t-test. The result showed that students’ mean achievement in GST 101 differed significantly with respect to uncorrected and corrected scores. Students had a higher mean score in the uncorrected scores. Relating gender separately to corrected and uncorrected scores, the result produced no significant difference. It was concluded that the use of correction formula drastically reduced students’ original scores in GST 101. It is hereby recommended that correction formula be introduced in public examination to forestall guessing in examinations.

This work introduces an innovative participatory approach for extreme events’ data collection training, which targets young scientists and specifically Engineering students. In the context of this action, students are trained in an exploratory method of data gathering by their active participation and their direct contact with the inhabitants of the flood-prone area. It aims at a comprehensive data collection process, significant before setting any hydrologic or hydraulic computation modelling scheme or performing a flood simulation analysis. The collected data form the key input in sophisticated models that assess and manage flood risk, simulate, forecast risk zones and/or create flood maps. The participatory data collection process, called Mobile Flood Data Walk, has already been implemented in previous case studies. However, herein, the Flood Data Walk is applied for the first time in a Cretan study site as a didactic approach for students. Specifically, the in-situ interactive data collection event was held in Stalos watershed, in Crete, Greece, which is often exposed to flooding, on June 19, 2019. Fourteen undergraduate students participated by sharing knowledge, walking and talking and/or creating maps. They were not given specific guidelines. They had a digital Google map of the study area on their mobile phone. The groups of students or individual students followed undetermined routes in every direction. As they were moving on foot, participants were asked to explore and uncover information, photos, maps or flooding clues within the place. They were asked to observe and search for visual cues of flooding, consider or/and brainstorm together questions about the data found in the landscape and the data collected within the current walk, that cannot be collected by sensors and devices. During the walk students were also highly encouraged to interact and listen to the aspects of the local people who have actually experienced flooding in the study area and, therefore, own significant empirical knowledge on floods. Afterwards, students were gathered and narrated their observations and comments. They brainstormed the possibilities for creative responses and they, finally, filled in an online interactive questionnaire on Kahoot! platform, a game-based learning tool. They left their feedback from their walking experience and as a result a rich list of information, pictures, thoughts and reports on landscape was collected. It is a fact that the concept of moving through the place develops experiential learning which is critical on knowledge building. Moreover, engaging people who live with flooding with those who are working to develop flood management tools and methods offers potential for gathering meaningful insights and data, which can be very constructive for candidates’ engineers-decision makers in the field of extreme flood events’ management.

Keywords: Flood data collection; Students’ training methods; Flood Data Walk

This research is co-financed by Greece and the European Union (European Social Fund- ESF) through the Operational Programme «Human Resources Development, Education and Lifelong Learning» in the context of the project “Reinforcement of Postdoctoral Researchers - 2nd Cycle” (MIS-5033021), implemented by the State Scholarships Foundation (ΙΚΥ).

This paper discusses a first-year writing research prospectus prompt designed to support first-year undergraduate students transitioning from high school writing—which often focuses on summary and synthesis—to college-level writing. In college, “research papers” often require knowledge production: developing research questions that address gaps in existing scholarship. My prospectus prompt offers a scaffolded structure for writers embarking on such college-level projects, and it also offers a tool to facilitate writing transfer, with the goal of enabling students to develop major research projects independently in other classes. It does so in two ways. First, it labels the components of major research projects (e.g. objects of study, research questions about those objects of study, and the theoretical frameworks used to analyze objects of study). Second, it provides a process for approaching research projects, including showing students how to develop research questions and how to move beyond summarizing and synthesizing other scholars.

This research has three research questions. The first research question is “What techniques the teacher use in improving students pronouncing words loudly at the first year of MAN Batam?” the second is “Which technique frequently used by the teacher in improving students pronouncing words loudly at the first year of MAN Batam ?” and third is what might made the teacher prefer to the technique? Moreover, the subject of the study are two English teachers. Meanwhile, the object of the study is the teachers’ techniques in improving students pronouncing words loudly at the first year of MAN Batam . In this research, the researcher took two teachers as the respondent. The techniques of collecting data are observation and interview. Observation is used to know the teacher technique in teaching pronounciation. And interview is used to know the effectiveness of technique in teaching pronounciation. The researcher uses observations as main data collection and the interview is as to support the data needed. In addition to the data analysis, the researcher uses descriptive quantitative which applies statistical data. To know the percentage, the researcher used formula as follow: P As for the result of this research, the researcher takes some conclusions. They are: English teacher uses drilling technique how to pronounce the word, English teacher uses repetition technique to practice and improve students pronouncing, English teacher uses backward building up technique to improve students pronouncing, and End the repetition technique is the most frequently used by the teacher. Based on the analysis of data, the researcher concludes that The Teachers’ Techniques in Improving Students Pronouncing Words Loudly at the first year of MAN Batam is categorized into “less”.
