The mechanical product concept design method based on reverse engineering (RE) is a new approach in the concept design domain. The functional pattern is thought as an effective carrier and medium of mapping function to structure, which provides an efficient path for expressing the intrinsic evolution rule of the complex mechanical qualitative structure. And it is used as the information organization unit and the assembly product information model, which could give some help to express the design knowledge effectively. Therefore, we proposed a mechanical product concept design method based on RE. The examples indicated that this method is feasible and it provides a practical technical way for the knowledge reuse and continue innovation of the existence products.

New paradigms and accompanying software systems are necessary to support the integration of system level design and discipline level analysis activities for the implementation of product lifecycle management. In this paper, we present an information driven product development method for the integration in the context of multidisciplinary product realization. The method contains three constituents: product information model which represents the associativities among design requirements, product components, and design parameters; compromise Decision Support Problem which maps the information model directly into design problems; and knowledge based Finite Element Analysis which generates analysis model automatically from the information model. Information driven product development uses product information model as a communication media between design and analysis activities, hence provides an effective way to trace the impact of design changes, facilitates the reuse of analyses models, and supports collaborative decision-making. An electronic chip package design and analysis scenario is presented to illustrate and demonstrate this method.

Turning to the new educational paradigm, the research paper considers the conditions for ensuring the effective-ness of authentic assessment of students ' achievements within the competence approach and the transition from traditional knowledge control to tests developed on the basis of the theory of pedagogical measurements. Special attention is paid to independent assessment as a tool for stimulating learning activities, as well as to the justifica-tion of the pattern design method used in the develop-ment of measurement tools. The experimental basis of the study is based on the results of an independent assess-ment of educational achievements of students of the sen-ior level of secondary vocational education in social studies in several educational organizations. As a result of the survey of participants in independent testing, the formation of a stable positive learning motivation is not-ed. The relationship with the assessment of the impact on educational motivation is confirmed by the respondents ' attitude to the authentic assessment procedure on the part of participants in the assessment process: school-children, teachers, and parents. As a result, it was re-vealed that all subjects of the educational process evalu-ate the impact of the proposed method of assessment on educational motivation from a positive side.

The Loess Hilly–Gully region (LHGR) is the most serious soil erosion area in the world. For the small watershed with high management in this area, the scientific problem that has been paid attention to in recent years is the impact of the land consolidation project on the erosion environment in the gully region. In this study, the 3D simulation method of vegetation, eroded sediment and pollutant transport was innovated based on the principles of erosion sediment dynamics and similarity theory, and the impacts of GLCP were analyzed on the erosion environment at different scales. The verification results show that the design method and the scale conversion relationship (geometric scale: λl = 100) were reasonable and could simulate the transport process on the complex underlying surface of a small watershed. Compared with untreated watersheds, a significant change was the current flood peak lagging behind the sediment peak. There were two important critical values of GLCP impact on the erosion environment. The erosion transport in HMSW had no change when the proportion was less than 0.85%, and increased obviously when it was greater than 3.3%. The above results have important theoretical and practical significance for watershed simulation and land-use management in HMSW.

A new design method for trajectory shaping guidance laws with the impact angle constraint is proposed in this study. The basic idea is that the multiplier introduced to combine the equations for the terminal constraints is used to shape a flight trajectory as desired. To this end, the general form of impact angle control guidance (IACG) is first derived as a function of an arbitrary constraint-combining multiplier using the optimal control. We reveal that the constraint-combining multiplier satisfying the kinematics can be expressed as a function of state variables. From this result, the constraint-combining multiplier to achieve a desired trajectory can be obtained. Accordingly, when the desired trajectory is designed to satisfy the terminal constraints, the proposed method directly can provide a closed form of IACG laws that can achieve the desired trajectory. The potential significance of the proposed result is that various trajectory shaping IACG laws that can cope with various guidance goals can be readily determined compared to existing approaches. In this study, several examples are shown to validate the proposed method. The results also indicate that previous IACG laws belong to the subset of the proposed result. Finally, the characteristics of the proposed guidance laws are analyzed through numerical simulations.

Background: Midwifery is the backbone of women and child healthcare. The shortage of staff in maternity units is a crisis faced by many countries worldwide, including South Africa. Objectives: This study aims to explore the perceptions of midwives on the shortage and retention of staff at a public institution.Method: The study was conducted at one of the tertiary hospitals in Tshwane District, Gauteng Province. A total of 11 midwives were interviewed through face-to-face and focus group interviews. An explorative, descriptive generic qualitative design method was followed, and a non-probability, purposive sampling technique was used. Thematic coding analysis was followed for analysing data. Results: The impact of shortage of midwives was reported to be directly related to poor provision of quality care as a result of increased workload, leading to low morale and burnout. The compromised autonomy of midwives in the high obstetrics dependency units devalues the status of midwives. Conclusion: Midwives are passionate about their job, despite the hurdles related to their day-to-day work environment. They are demoralised by chronic shortage of staff and feel overworked. Staff involvement in decision-making processes is a motivational factor for midwives to stay in the profession. The midwives need to be in the centre of the decision-making processes related to their profession. The revision of the scope of practice and classification of midwifery profession away from general nursing complex by the South African Nursing Council (SANC) could place midwifery in its rightful status.

The paper studies the impact of a broadly understood trend, which includes a change point in mean and monotonic trends studied by Bhattacharyaet al.(1983), on the asymptotic behaviour of a class of tests designed to detect long memory in a stationary sequence. Our results pertain to a family of tests which are similar to Lo's (1991) modifiedR/Stest. We show that both long memory and nonstationarity (presence of trend or change points) can lead to rejection of the null hypothesis of short memory, so that further testing is needed to discriminate between long memory and some forms of nonstationarity. We provide quantitative description of trends which do or do not fool theR/S-type long memory tests. We show, in particular, that a shift in mean of a magnitude larger thanN-½, whereNis the sample size, affects the asymptotic size of the tests, whereas smaller shifts do not do so.

The existing process equipment design resource utilization rate in automobile industry is low, so it is urgent to change the design method to improve the design efficiency. This paper proposed a fast design method of process equipment driven by classification retrieval of 3D model-based definition (MBD). Firstly, an information integration 3D model is established to fully express the product information definition and to effectively express the design characteristics of the existing 3D model. Through the classification machine-learning algorithm of 3D MBD model based on Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), the 3D MBD model with similar characteristics to the auto part model to be designed was retrieved from the complex process equipment case database. Secondly, the classification and retrieval of the model are realized, and the process equipment of retrieval association mapping with 3D MBD model is called out. The existing process equipment model is adjusted and modified to complete the rapid design of the process equipment of the product to be designed. Finally, a corresponding process equipment design system was developed and verified through a case study. The application of machine learning to the design of industrial equipment greatly shortens the development cycle of equipment. In the design system, the system learns from engineers, making them understand the design better than engineers. Therefore, it can help any user to quickly design 3D models of complex products.

PurposeThe aim of this paper is to present a parametric design method to generate optimum adaptive facades regarding occupants' comfort and building energy criteria. According to the literature review, the following questions have arisen to address the research gaps: Is it possible to have the outside view throughout the whole year without discomfort glare by utilising adaptive solar facades (ASFs)? How can architects integrate both view quality and quantity into ASF design? What is the impact of dynamic vertical shading systems mounted on south facades on the outside view, occupants' visual comfort and operational energy? How can we evaluate the view quantity through multi-layer shading systems?Design/methodology/approachIn recent years, there is a surge in demand for fully glazed buildings, motivating both architects and scholars to explore novel ideas for designing adaptive solar facades. Nevertheless, the view performance of such systems has not been fully explored especially when it comes to the effect of dynamic vertical shading systems mounted on south facades. This fact clarifies the need to conduct more research in this field by taking into account the window view and natural light. Consequently, a simulation research is carried out to investigate the impact of a dynamic shading system with three vertical slats used on the south facade of a single office room located in Tehran, on both view quality and quantity, visual comfort and operational energy. The research attempts to reach a balance between the occupant's requirements and building energy criteria through a multi-objective optimisation. The distinctive feature of the proposed method is generating some optimum shading which could only cover the essential parts of the window area. It was detected from the simulation results that the usage of a dynamic vertical shading system with multi slats for south facades compared to common Venetian blinds can firstly, provide four times more view quantity. Secondly, the view quality is significantly improved through enabling occupants to enjoy the sky layer the entire year. Finally, twice more operational energy can be saved while more natural light can enter the indoor environment without glare. The final outcome of this research contributes toward designing high-performance adaptive solar facades.FindingsThis paper proposes a new metric to evaluate the view quantity through a multi-layer shading system. The proposed method makes it clear that the usage of dynamic vertical shading systems with multi-layers mounted on south facades can bring many benefits to both occupants and building energy criteria. The proposed method could (1) provide four times more view quantity; (2) improve view quality by enabling occupants to watch the sky layer throughout the whole year; (3) slash the operational energy by twice; (4) keep the daylight glare probability (DGP) value in the imperceptible range.Research limitations/implicationsThe research limitations that should be acknowledged are ignoring the impact of the adjacent building on sunlight reflection, which could cause discomfort glare issues. Another point regarding the limitations of the proposed optimisation method is the impact of vertical shading systems on users' visual interests. A field study ought to be conducted to determine which one could provide the more desirable outside view: a vertical or horizontal the view. Research on the view performance of ASFs, especially their impact on the quality of view, is sorely lacking.Originality/valueThis paper (1) analyses the performance of dynamic vertical shadings on south facades; (2) evaluates outside view through multi-layer shading systems; and (3) integrates both view quality and quantity into designing adaptive solar facades.

PurposeThis study investigates how Danmu (danmaku) technological features (DTFs) of recommendation vlogs (rec-vlogs) impact consumer experiences and decisions.Design/methodology/approachThe authors adopt the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique with a sample of 422 viewers of Danmu-enabled rec-vlogs to examine the proposed model.FindingsThe DTFs positively affect consumer loyalty intentions through the mediation of social presence and immersion. Also, vlogger-product congruency significantly moderates the relationship between social presence and immersion.Originality/valueWith the increasing popularity of vlogs, retailers have adopted the vlog as a new marketing channel to connect with consumers. Although a growing body of studies focuses on this phenomenon, little is known about how DTFs help to increase consumer loyalty toward using rec-vlogs as product information sources. Anchored on the stimulus–organism–response framework, this study investigates how pseudo-synchronicity, Danmu-content congruency and parallelism, three DTFs used in rec-vlogs, impact consumer experiences of social presence and immersion, eventually influence the consumers' loyalty intentions toward rec-vlogs. The authors also examine whether the effect of social presence on immersion is contingent on vlogger-product congruency. These findings have implications for both researchers and practitioners to understand the effect of DTFs in the context of rec-vlogs.
