The study examines the role of socio-economic factors in conflict in the San community of Platfontein. This article’s analysis is based on the primary data collected from individual interviews and focused group discussions conducted in 2013 and 2014. It reveals that socioeconomic factors are both the cause of the conflict and serve as remedies for the conflict. The causes date back to the historical displacement and dispossession of land the community faced. The San community is highly dependent on the limited income of a few veterans while the vast majority is unemployed. The lack of skills and limited command of the dominant language in the community makes them less able to compete for jobs. The community’s economic hardships are increased by the dependency syndrome shown by the adults, who tend towards job-seeking rather than job creation and self-reliance. The economic hardship has become one formidable cause of conflict in the community. A concerted effort is needed to change the attitude of the community so that it becomes entrepreneurial and independent. One factor that erodes unity within the San community is that the leadership does not work closely with the people – a situation that increases the likelihood of conflict. The efforts undertaken to empower the San community and lift them out of poverty are very limited. The conflict between !Xun and Khwe is attributed to the divisive political rule adopted during the apartheid regime in South Africa. Comparative economic asymmetries between !Xun and Khwe are also causes of conflict. Furthermore, the widening of social distance, along with competition for jobs and housing, increases the tensions and divisions between the !Xun and Khwe communities. The cause of conflict between the San community and other communities is also associated with unemployment and unfair treatment. Socio-economic factors are valuable ingredients in the process of conflict resolution and healing the emotional problems of the conflicting parties.

English
The role of agricultural sector is very important to enhance the national economic development although its development is not fully supported by sufficient capital. The existing formal financial institutions tend to prioritize non-agricultural services which have high profit but low risk. In this context, efforts to establish agricultural bank institution that especially support agricultural activity services are highly recommended. This paper aimed at a review of the urgency, possibility, potential, and constraints of agricultural bank establishment in Indonesia. The result showed that conceptually and empirically, agricultural bank institution has a promising prospective in Indonesia. There are many options in respect to agricultural bank establishment in Indonesia, such as (1) Credit-agricole “France model”, (2) “Bank Bukopin” model, (3) foreign direct investment model, (4) upgrading of “BUMN Bank” to “Agricultrual Bank” model, and (5) utilizing the financial institution that locally available and accessible by the people. For efficient and effective of the services, the agricultural bank should be designed based on agricultural characteristics and typical actors of agricultural business.

Purpose Starting from these premises, the aim of the paper is illustrating the role of experience in urban regeneration projects and to explore how the experience of high quality product luxury places can be sustainable with existent place identity or new place identity to be suitably created. Design/methodology/approach The experience of a place may become an integral part of a product experience. The enhancement of products (Splendiani, 2013): assumes a meaning which goes beyond the simple sale of material goods. It covers the supply of complex experiences … enriched by intangible elements capable to stimulate and involve the sensory and experiential component of consumption. It deals with attracting people to the places where local products are made by inserting the products in the most extensive offers covering the entire territorial system of reference The experience may also be used for the spectacolarisation of a place and its commercialisation, as in the case of “brandscapes” (Klingman, 2007). In this case, it is important not to clone every place everywhere because they could inevitably resemble each other without be able to really engage the people who move into them (Lehtovuori, 2010). The methodology approach is based on a wide bibliography and internet research based on the main terms connected to the topics of the paper, including experience, place identity, quality product, regeneration; on case studies – even though not illustrated – concerning places of interest for the research topics, such as: Hafencity in Hamburg, the Albert Dock in Liverpool, Abondaibarra area in Bilbao. Findings The planning of places of quality product cannot be separated from interpretation of the territory as a cultural system resulting from an ensemble of historical, economic and social processes. In such a system, the contribution of the cultural factor must be considered propulsive, not only for its qualitative meaning but also, and especially, for the role of “trait d’union” of a number of actions taken to protect and enhance places. Originality/value The increasing importance of the use of experience in the urban regeneration process is leading cities to be involved in constructing suitable images and symbols of their transformed areas to meet the new trends, also according with luxurious ones. Even though globalisation is one of the main dangers in innovative itineraries, the proper planning of quality architecture and public spaces could prevent it by creating a suitable mix between innovation and culture.

In this paper, we investigate how the marketization of financial institutions affects China’s industrial contestability. Our empirical results show that a higher degree of marketization of financial institutions is significantly associated with both the operation of more firms and the smaller average size of firms. Moreover, the lower and upper quartiles of the conditional distribution of firm size are all significantly negatively associated with the higher marketization degree of financial institutions, whereas increased financial institution competition and market-oriented allocation of credit funds have greater negative effect on the average size of larger firms, relative to smaller firms. In sum, improvements on the degree of marketization of financial institutions lead to an increase in the number of firms and a reduction in the average size of firms in China’s industry. Therefore, the marketization of financial institutions has a significant positive impact on China’s industrial contestability.

The Jogja Fashion Week Carnival (JFWC) is related to various agendas of the local government in Yogyakarta, particularly in industrial and tourism sectors. The JFWC event is correlated to the domestic industries in which one of them has a positive impact upon the progress and the existence of this industry in order to reduce the rate of import from outside Yogyakarta. In another domain, the use of public space, which is often done by JFWC event, gives entertainment and cultural education to the people, thus this event is useful and appropriate if it is held as a routine agenda for the existence of the tourism industry in Yogyakarta. The education given to the people includes the global warming issue, the treatment and utilization of hazardous waste, and the important role of JFWC event in an attempt to create clothing trend centre in Yogyakarta. The dialectics of JFWC clothes can be seen as a process of cultural diplomacy locally, nationally, and internationally. In addition, the existence of JFWC clothes can be viewed as a sustainability phenomenon of contemporary artworks in Indonesia.

The oil mining was firstly performed in Musi Banyuasin Regency by the end of the 1990s as performed by the people on old wells of Standard Vacuum Oil Company which was no longer engaged in oil production activities. The crude oil is then refined into gasoline (premium), kerosene and gas oil (solar). Due to the increasing oil mining activities, the local government of Musi Banyuasin Regency stipulated a Local Regulation No.27 of 2006 concerning the sale of public oil mining products. In this local regulation, people are only paid for their work drawing out the crude oil, which is valued at a low price and is not suited with the workload. Since then, the people have not only performed mining for crude oil from old wells, but also by performing their own mining activities, especially for the mining field with a depth of 100 - 200 meters. The result is that the crude oil trade in the Musi Banyuasin Regency is increasingly widespread, either for the crude or distilled oil. This study aimed to describe, analyze and interpret social impact, environmental risks and multiplier effect of illegal public oil mining. This study used the paradigm of critical theory. The results showed there are some social impacts on people's lives in the mining and refinery sites. The positive impact is the shift of livelihood activities, from rubber farmers to oil miners, both as investors, traders, workers and oil takers, so that the multiplier effect of this activity is highly perceived by the community in their lives. The negative impact is the polarization in the life of society, such as gambling, drug distribution, red-light district and environmental degradation due to oil spills and distillation.
