The objective of the work consisted of comparing the characteristics of the changes in visual acuity as a function of the illumination of the tests in healthy individuals and in patients with myopia, examining two groups (50 people each): a control group of healthy individuals and patients with high myopia with visual acuity with optimal correction above 1.0. Visual acuity was determined under different lighting conditions (from 50Lx to 400Lx) using optotype tables with a small step of 0.05, and increasing the function δ, which is the difference between these values. δ in healthy individuals is 0.7, and in individuals with myopia it is equal to 0.55, which is a fairly high indicator and confirms the absence of contraindications to attract this category of patients to various types of visually strenuous work, including driving.

Abstract Background To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) implantation in high myopic patients with inactive Graves’ ophthalmopathy (GO) by observing the changes of choroidal thickness (CT). Methods Eight patients (16 eyes) with high myopia accompanied with inactive GO were selected as the experimental group (group A) and 18 high myopic patients (36 eyes) without GO were selected as a control group (group B). The outcomes of uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), safety index, efficacy index, intraocular pressure (IOP), vault, corneal endothelial count, and choroidal thickness (CT) were observed. The values of CT were measured using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) scans. Results The UCVA and BCVA in all operated eyes were better than that before surgery. The postoperative safety index and efficacy index were 1.23 and 1.19 in the group A, respectively, and 1.26 and 1.21 in the group B, respectively. In both groups, foveal CT increased significantly in high myopic patients at 2 hours and at 3 months after surgery, compared to preoperative values. The same tendencies were observed in the inner nasal and outer nasal regions. Compared with patients without GO, the increase of CT was more obvious in GO patients, 2 hours postoperatively (P = 0.006) and 3 months postoperatively (P = 0.011). Conclusions The ICL implantation is safe and effective in high myopic patients with inactive GO. Subfoveal and nasal CT may be useful parameters for monitoring the activity of GO patients.

Abstract Objectives To observe and compare the difference in retinal thickness using optical coherence tomography (OCT) between patients with high myopia (HM) during the third trimester of pregnancy and age-matched HM non-pregnant women. Methods A case-control study. A total of 39 eyes from 39 HM women in the third trimester (study group) and 50 eyes of 50 age-matched non-pregnant women with HM (control group) were included. All subjects underwent SD-OCT examination. The built-in software was used to measure the retinal thickness in macular region. The data from two groups were compared using independent-samples t test. Results Among the 89 subjects in this study, the mean gestational age of the study group was 35.09 ± 2.44 weeks, and the average age was 32.24 ± 3.75 years. The average age of the control group was 34.04 ± 7.19 years old. Compared with the control group, the average thickness of parafoveal area, and the average thickness of parafoveal superior, inferior, temporal quadrants of the superficial retina and the average thickness of the foveal and parafoveal of the superficial retina were significantly decreased in the study group (P < 0.05). Compared with the control group, the average thickness of all quadrants of the retina in the parafoveal area except the nasal quadrant were significantly decreased in the study group (P < 0.05). Conclusions In this observational study, the retinal thickness of patients with high myopia during the third trimester of pregnancy was thinner than that of non-pregnant women with age-matched high myopia.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers around the world. One of the factors involved in the development of colorectal cancer is the changes in the normal flora of the intestine. OBJECTIVE: In this study, the mean copy number of Enterococcus faecalis in people with polyps and people with colorectal cancer has been evaluated in comparison with healthy controls. METHODS: In this study, 25 patients with colorectal cancer and 28 patients with intestinal polyps were selected and stool specimens were taken. In addition, 24 healthy individuals were selected as control group. Extraction of bacterial DNA from the stool sample were performed. The molecular methods of PCR for confirmation of standard strain and absolute Real Time PCR (qRT-PCR) method were used to evaluate the number of Enterococcus faecalis in the studied groups. RESULTS: The results of this study indicate that the mean copy number of Enterococcus faecalis in patients with colorectal cancer was 11.2x109 per gram of stool, and in patients with polyps was 9.4x108 per gram of stool. In healthy people, this number was 9x108 per gram of stool. There was a significant difference between the implicit copy numbers in the three groups. (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Enterococcus faecalis in faecal flora of people with colorectal cancer was significantly higher than those with polyps and healthy people. This could potentially signify the ability of this bacterium to induce colorectal cancer. More studies are needed to prove this theory.

Aim. To study the state of the accommodative ability of amblyopia before and after treatment. Materials and methods. One hundred patients (158 eyes) with friendly alternating and monolateral strabismus were examined. The control group consisted of 10 healthy individuals (20 eyes) with emmetropia: the average age of patients under 3 years of age was 2.4 0.15 years, from 3 years to 7 years, 4.8 0.07 years, and above 7 years, 8.3 0.4 years. The vast majority of patients (84 people, 126 eyes) had hyperopic astigmatism, and 16 patients (32 eyes) had a high degree of hyperopia. Twenty-eight patients (40 eyes), 48 patients (84 eyes), and 20 patients (26 eyes) had amblyopia of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degrees, respectively. Along with generally accepted methods for examining eyes, the OAA volume and ZAA were determined as the absolute accommodation margin by the proximetric method (AKA-0.1) before and after hardware treatment to relax and stimulate the ciliary muscle. Results. The results after treatment revealed a 1.52-fold increase in OAA to 14.4 0.23 D; 13.5 0.10 D; 13.1 0.41 D; and ZAA and a significant 2-fold increase in visual acuity (P 0.001). Conclusion. A criterion for the effectiveness of hardware treatment for dysbinocular amblyopia is an increase in OAA and ZAA, accompanied by a 2-fold increase in distance visual acuity (P 0.001).

This paper presents the results of a retrospective epidemiological study carried out to detect chronic infection foci (CIF) in patients affected by T-cell mediated dermatoses. The values obtained for the CIF prevalence are compared with those in the general population, as well as in the control group. The latter comprised generally healthy people according to the results of in-depth medical examination. It is found that patients with psoriasis demonstrate a higher prevalence of chronic tonsillitis compared to the values both in the general population and in the control group (p = 0.001). Patients with eczema are characterized by an increased prevalence of chronic granulomatous periodontitis, but only in comparison with generally healthy individuals (p = 0.046). The results obtained for patients with atopic dermatitis, lichen planus and alopecia areata are found to be statistically significant for chronic tonsillitis, which occurs therein more frequently than in the general population and in the group of generally healthy people (p = 0.001).

ABSTRACT Introduction The clinical manifestation of periodontal diseases (such as gingivitis and chronic periodontitis) results from a complex interplay between the etiologic agents such as bacteria that present in the dental plaque, genetic factors, systemic diseases, smoking and exposure of some heavy metals, such as mercury. In this study, we aimed to evaluate hair mercury levels in healthy subjects in comparison with periodontal patients. Materials and methods One hundred twenty subjects were enrolled in this study. The included persons were divided into 3 groups: healthy subjects (n = 40), gingivitis (n = 40) and chronic periodontitis patients (n = 40). Hair samples were collected from occipital area of head. Total mercury levels were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Results The difference between mercury levels in three groups were statistically significant (p-value < 0.001). Mercury level in periodontitis patients was greater than the gingivitis group (p-value < 0.001). In addition the differences between mercury levels in periodontitis patients vs healthy individuals was significant (p-value = 0.048). The gingivitis patients had lower levels of mercury than the control group, but the difference was not significant (p-value = 0.170). Conclusion The results showed that the levels of mercury are to some extent differed in periodontal diseases in comparison with the healthy individuals. A study with larger sample size is needed for clarification of this issue. How to cite this article Roushan HH, Parsian H, Alijannia R, Mosapour A, Khafri S. Purpose: to compare the clinical results of implantations of bi-and trifocal intraocular lenses (IOL) in femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery. Patients and methods. The article presents the results of the Acrysof IQ Panoptix trifocal lens implantations in 84 patients (112 eyes) — the main group and Acrysof IQ Restor bifocal IOL implantations in 52 patients (98 eyes) — the control group. All patients underwent femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS). The following data were evaluated: uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCDVA) , uncorrected near visual acuity (30–45 cm) and at an average distance (50–70 cm) at discharge, after 14 days, 1 and 3 months after the surgery under photopic and mesopic lighting conditions. Postoperative refractometry data; the defocusing curve was performed in patients with a high UCDVA (0.9–1.0) monocularly under photopic conditions using standard optotypes 14 days after surgery; aberrometry indicators. Results. It was shown that both lenses provided high uncorrected distance and near visual acuity in photopic lighting conditions. At the same time, the Acrysof IQ Panoptix lens provided significantly better visual acuity at an intermediate distance and was more resistant to defocusing conditions. Refraction data: after 1 month, emmetropia was observed in 87 % of patients in the main group and in 85 % of control group, after 6 months — 92 and 89 % respectively. There were no significant differences in high order aberrations and total aberrations between patients of the compared groups. Conclusion. The use of the PanOptix trifocal lens made it possible to obtain maximum visual acuity at different distances, regardless of the level of illumination.

Summary Background It has been shown that decreased expression and activity of extracellular matrix protein mindin correlate with various types of cancers including breast, colon and lung cancers. The aim of the presented study was to investigate the serum mindin levels in prostate cancer. Methods Mindin concentrations in serum were measured in 56 patients with prostate cancer (mean age 68 years) and in control group of 29 healthy men (mean age 64 years) using commercially available enzymatic immunoassay (Cusabio, WuHan, China). The patients were divided with respect to the severity of the disease into two groups according to the EAU guidelines (stage 1, 2 – less severe tumours, stage 3, 4 – severe tumours). Results Serum mindin concentrations were significantly elevated in the group of healthy individuals unlike in the patients with prostate cancer (2.12 ng/mL vs 0.78 ng/mL, with P=0.0007, AUC=0.705). Patients with less severe tumours (stage 1, 2) and severe tumours (stage 3, 4) had significantly decreased levels of S-mindin as well (P=0.0037), although the difference in serum mindin concentrations between the patients with less severe and severe tumours was not significant. Conclusions Concentrations of mindin were decreased in patients with prostate cancer and reduced in patients with less severe prostate cancer as well. Mindin appears to be a promising diagnostic marker useful in the diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Lung cancer (LC) is a common malignant tumor with high morbidity and mortality. The development of new molecular markers and the early diagnosis of LC and the exploration of emerging targeted therapies are of great significance. Therefore, this study systematically evaluates the correlation between peripheral serum MIC-1 levels and LC. Search PubMed, Web of Science, Medline and other databases, the search time is from the establishment of the database to July 2021. The LC group included LC patients, the Non-cancer group included patients with benign lung diseases (BLD), and the control group included healthy people. The serum MIC-1 levels of LC group and control group, LC group and Non-cancer group were compared respectively, and the correlation between serum MIC-1 and clinical characteristics of LC patients was evaluated and analyzed, and the ROC curve of MIC-1 in prediction of LC. Finally, 5 articles were included, including 1179 patients with LC, 109 patients with BLD, and 1020 healthy people. Meta-analysis results: the level of MIC-1 in LC group was overtop that in healthy group, and the difference was obvious [SMD=1.97, 95%CI (1.35, 2.59), PC0.00001]. The level of MIC-1 in LC group was overtop that in Non-cancer group, and the difference was obvious [SMD=382.97,95%CI (313.74, 452.19), PC0.00001]. The descriptive evaluation analyzes the correlation between MIC-1 and the clinical characteristics of LC group, and the results show that MIC-1 has a certain correlation with the stage of LC group. The AUC of serum MIC-1 in the identification of LC group and the control group was greater than 0.5. The AUC value of MIC-1 in the diagnosis of LC was 0.851-0.906, and the best sensitivity range was 63.50%-99.00%. The best specificity is in the range of 70.4%-95.80%. The Meta-analysis indicated that the serum MIC-1 level in LC group is overtop that in BLD and healthy people, and has a obvious correlation with LC stage staging; and the ROC curve shows that it has important significance in the diagnosis and prognosis of LC.

Purpose. To evaluate efficacy and safety of novel tricyclic corneal stroma injection (TCSI) voriconazole for the treatment of fungal keratitis. Methods. This retrospective cohort study included data of 57 patients (57 eyes) with fungal keratitis. The TCSI group consisted of 27 patients (27 eyes) who were injected voriconazole once via TCSI procedure within one week after enrollment, in addition to conventional antifungal treatment. The control group consisted of 30 patients (30 eyes) who were treated using conventional antifungal treatment modalities. The outcome measures consist of the 3-week and 3-month best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) values and size of infiltrate or scar, time to re-epithelialization, corneal perforation rate and/or therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty (TPK) requirement, the preoperative and post-TCSI corneal endothelial cell density (ECD), and the intraocular pressure (IOP) of the treated eye and the respective contralateral eye. Results. There were no significant differences in the baseline demographic and clinical characteristics between the two groups. 3 weeks and 3 months after enrollment, the TCSI group exhibited an increase in visual acuity ( P < 0.05 ), and there was no significant difference in the size of infiltrate or scar between two groups ( P > 0.05 ). Time to re-epithelialization was shorter in the TCSI group than in the control group ( P < 0.05 ). There was no statistically significant difference between corneal ECD on the day before and 7 days after TCSI and the IOP of treated and contralateral healthy eyes on the day before and 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, and 1 month after TCSI ( P > 0.05 ). The difference in the risk of perforation and/or TPK requirement was not statistically significant between two groups ( P > 0.05 ). Conclusion. Localized injection of voriconazole using TCSI may be a minimally invasive, safe, and effective adjuvant treatment modality for fungal keratitis.
