Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), which may be a missed diagnosis in children, is seen at an important frequency. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics of patients with RLS and to show the effect of RLS on school success. Forty-three patients with RLS and 43 healthy volunteers were included to the study. Blood samples were taken to measure ferritin. The averages of school exam scores were recorded. The patient group was classified as mild, moderate, severe, and very severe according to the RLS rating scale. The daytime sleepiness was measured by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). The"Turgay DSM-IV-Based Child and Adolescent Disruptive Behavioral Disorders Screening and Rating Scale (T-DSM-IV-S)" was completed by parents, and patients' inattention, and hyperactivity-impulsivity scores were compared with the control group. According to the RLS rating scale scores 25.6% (n:11) were evaluated as mild, 60.5% (n:26) were moderate and 14% (n:6) were severe. The mean ferritin level was significantly lower in the patient group. The mean score of inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity in the patient group to be significantly higher than the control. The mathematics and science course mean grades were significantly lower in the patient group than the controls (66.7±17.7 vs 74.2±11.7). ESS scores were found to be significantly higher in the patient group. In this study, RLS has been found associated with ADHD and iron deficiency, similar to previous studies. There are not many studies on the effects of RLS in children on daily life and this study has objectively shown that RLS reduces patients' school achievement

Abstract Background Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is an annoying problem, has a noticeable impact on all perspective of the life. RLS attract spots to its discussion as it became a challenge in all societies. Also, antipsychotic (AP) and antidepressant drugs (AD) is well known as a cause of RLS, But RLS occurrence and its prevalence among psychiatric patients who receive the antipsychotic and antidepressant drugs is un known in Egypt. Aim of the Study To estimate rate of Restless legs Syndrome among psychiatric patients who receive Antidepressant & Antipsychotic drugs. And to assess severity of RLS if detected in those patients Subjects and Methods A descriptive cross-sectional, case control comparative observational study, included two hundred Patients who received AP and AD for more than one month and one hundreds of volunteers as a control group from Psychiatry department, Ain Shams University Hospitals and Al- Abbassyia Mental Hospital in Cairo, Egypt, in the period between October 2018 and April 2019, Using validated Arabic version of Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID-I), four items questionnaire that was recommended by International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (IRLSSG) Arabic version for RLS diagnosis and validated Arabic version of Restless Legs Syndrome Rating Scale (IRLS). Results Eighty-three (41.5%) of patient group who received AP & AD and fifteen (15%) individual of control group met the diagnostic criteria of RLS. There was high statistically significance between the two groups regarding RLS occurrence (P = 0.000). Severity fluctuated in patients’ group between moderate and sever (69.9 % & 30.1%) respectively, while in control group it fluctuated between mild and moderate (40 % & 60%) respectively with high statistically significance between the two groups regarding RLS severity (P = 0.000). Family history and smoking are a risk factors for developing RLS as (OR = 2.705) & (OR = 6.390) respectively. While Trazadone and Haloperidol had a protective role against RLS (OR = 0.393 & 0.415) respectively. Conclusion RLS occurrence was higher in patients who received AP and AD drugs and its severity was more fluctuant among those patients, antipsychotic and antidepressant can induce RLS or worse it in patients who had past history of RLS before receiving the medications. Smoking and family history were risk factors for developing or worsening of RLS in our study. Both Haloperidol and Trazadone drugs in our study had protective role against RLS.

Objective: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common sensory motor disorder. RLS an urge to move the extremities that may be accompanied by dysesthesias, and significantly affects quality of life of affected patients. The frequency of RLS is higher in different systemic inflammatory diseases. Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an inherited inflammatory disease characterized by attacks of polyserositis, arthritis, and fever. The prevalence of RLS in patients with FMF is unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence rate of RLS in a sample of patients with FMF and compare this prevalence with that of a matched normal population. Method: A total of 60 patients with FMF and 60 healthy controls were studied. All participants underwent a neurological examination. Diagnostic criteria as proposed by the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (IRLSSG) were used to define RLS. The IRLSSG rating scale for the severity of RLS was applied to determine the severity of symptoms. Results: The prevalence of RLS was not significantly different between patients and controls. Although the mean International Restless Legs Syndrome Rating Scale (IRLSRS) scores tended to be higher in patients compared with controls, this difference was not significant. When each item of the severity scale was compared between the two groups, significantly higher scores were found in some items of the IRLSRS in patients with FMF compared with controls. Conclusion: According to this result, RLS symptoms in patients with FMF were more frequent and lasted longer than those in controls.

INTRODUCTION: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is characterized by an uncomfortable sensation on the legs, which causes the urge to move the legs. The main cause is unknown but there are many risk factors, including geographical properties and high altitude. Our objective was to explore the frequency of RLS in aircrew.METHODS: There were 301 Turkish aircrew who were admitted to Istanbul Medipol University Hospital Neurology Department for periodic examinations and 272 healthy (non-aircrew) subjects included in the study. The International RLS Study Group's Questionnaire and the International RLS Study Group Rating Scale (IRLSSGRS) were used to evaluate RLS. The participants filled the RLS questionnaire and then both groups were divided into two subgroups as having RLS or not. The subjects years in the profession, average flight duration in a month, daily sleep duration, smoking, and coffee consumption were recorded. None of the subjects had previously been diagnosed with RLS.RESULTS: The frequency of RLS was 6.7% in the aircrew group and 7.9% in the control group, and there was no significant difference between the two groups. Age, gender, daily duration of sleep, smoking, coffee consumption, family history of RLS, being a pilot or a flight attendant, years in profession, and monthly flight hours were similar in aircrew with and without RLS.DISCUSSION: The RLS frequency in aircrew was similar to that of the control group. We can conclude flying at high altitude wasnt a risk factor for RLS.Düz OA, Yilmaz NH, Olmuscelik O. Restless legs syndrome in aircrew. Aerosp Med Hum Perform. 2019; 90(11):934937.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to determine the extent of restless legs syndrome (RLS) in pregnant women and evaluate the relationship between the syndrome and quality of life. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study. A questionnaire developed by the researcher, the Short Form 36 (SF-36) Questionnaire to measure the quality of life, the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (IRLSSG) Diagnostic Criteria for RLS and the Restless Legs Syndrome Rating Scale were applied to the women to collect the data. A total of 250 pregnant women were included in the study. RESULTS: The mean age of the women was 28.11 ± 5.59 years and the mean gestational time was 26.26 ± 10.72 weeks. Symptoms of RLS were seen in 46.4 % of the women. The mean for the RLS Violence Rating Score was 20.82 ± 6.61 for the women with RLS. RLS was found to be mild in 5.2 % of the women, moderate in 45.7 %, severe in 40.5 % and very severe in 8.6 %. A statistically significant effect of RLS survival on quality of life was observed. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that almost half of the pregnant women in this study experienced RLS, and about half of those with RLS experienced severe or very severe RLS. There is a significant relationship between RLS and six domains of SF-36 (physical, role limitations, pain, general health perception, energy/vitality, and mental health).

Background: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is characterized for an uncomfortable sensation in legs and an irresistible desire to move them. This disorder has been more recently recognized in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) and can interfere with the quality of life (QOL). Objectives: The aims of this study are to describe the prevalence of RLS and its severity and influence on the QOL in patients with MG. Method: This was a cross-sectional study conducted from May to June 2016 in Recife, Brazil. A sample of 42 patients was interviewed using a sociodemographic questionnaire, MG QOL questionnaire-15 and The RLS Rating Scale. Results: RLS was present in 47.6% of patients and of these 40.5% met moderate to severe RLS criteria. Patients were 45 years on average (SD ± 14.4) and women represented 57.1% of the study population. Among patients with RSL, the quality-of-life scores were worse (p = 0.010) on average. There was no association of RLS with the duration of MG, use of immunosuppressant or clinical conditions that could mimic the occurrence of RLS. Conclusion: RLS is a prevalent condition in patients with MG, and may be severe enough to negatively impact QOL.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate bone and cardiac abnormalities and symptoms and signs of thyroid hormone excess in women with subclinical hyperthyroidism (SCH) aged < 65 years. Forty-eight women with SCH were evaluated. The control group consisted of 48 euthyroid volunteers. The mean symptom rating scale score was significantly higher in patients. Cardiac involvement, both morphological and affecting systolic and diastolic functions, was also observed in patients. Women with SCH showed a significant increase in serum markers of bone formation and resorption. In addition, bone mineral density (BMD) was lower in the femoral neck but not in the lumbar spine in patients before menopause, whereas a lower BMD was observed at both sites in postmenopausal patients. SCH is not completely asymptomatic in women aged < 65 years, and is associated with heart abnormalities and with increased bone turnover and reduced BMD even before menopause.

Abstract Background The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) in hemodialysis patients with restless leg syndrome (RLS) by heart rate variability (HRV) monitor. Methods112 subjects who were hemodialysis patients with RLS will be divided into 2 groups: experimental and control. Each subject will receive the treatment relevant to their group 2 times a week for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks of treatment the subject will enter a 2-week washout period, after which the subjects will switch groups. Measurements will include HRV recordings, International Restless Legs Syndrome Rating Scale (IRLSRS) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). DiscussionThis study is the first investigation to analyze the relationship between EA and the change of HRV by an objective monitor. If the findings of the current trial are positive, this study will also help support an effective, safe and cheap approach to clinical treatment of this challenging disorder, help foster improved understanding the relationship between RLS and HRV, and ultimately contribute to elucidate the mechanisms of EA.
