Taking into consideration the fact that editing is considered to be a field of scientific knowledge, a sphere of practical activity, and a discipline, problems of terminology appear. The aim of the research is to reveal definitions and statements that tend to take the role of terms and contain conflicting statements obstructing the scientific comprehension of terms. The research focuses on the comparison of different definitions of the term “editing” and of its types given by Russian and foreign theorists and practitioners, as well as on the analysis of new terms introduced into scientific discourse. The author touches upon various definitions of the concept of editing, considers its types as well as differences between the notions of editing and literary editing, compares the interpretations of these concepts in Russian, British, and American (editing, copyediting), Ukrainian and Polish scientific discourses, offers his vision of the problems. Textbooks and reference books do not always provide proper differences between the two main components of editorial activity—editorial analysis (evaluation) and editing. There are significant developments of Russian researchers in the direction of the history of editing ahead of the Western research. One can state that Russia has a school of editing history, and university researchers make a great contribution to its development. The author suggests adhering to the established traditions in the interpretation of editing and using it in journalism in the same sense as in book publishing, since initially it was the publishing of books that caused the need in editing as a professional activity. The result of the research demonstrates that it is impossible to refer editing as a sphere of scientific knowledge only to book publishing or philology. The author proposes his own definition of editing, tries to optimize the number of types of editing (particularly, duplication of the notions “editing” and “literary editing”, “editing” and “copyediting” is stated), and introduces a terminological combination “history of editing” into scientific discourse. The author proves that the replacement of the concepts “editing” and “editorial analysis” with such notions as “text activity” and “criticism of speech”, respectively, is not justified in scientific terms.

Introduction: Although attempts to establish a definition of metabolic syndrome (MS) intensified two decades ago, research into diseases co-occurring with MS was initiated as early as in the 17th century. The breakthrough came in 1988 with a study by Gerald M. Reaven, which combined so far unrelated conditions into X syndrome. In the 20th and 21st century, research focused on providing a definition applicable in clinical practice. Aim: The following overview summarizes the history of MS, from early descriptions to the most recent attempts at defining it. Material and methods: The literature was searched in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases focusing on history of research on MS, criteria of diagnosis. Results and discussion: Since 1998, while the concept of MS was accepted, the definition has evolved. Since the European Group for the Study of Insulin Resistance definition was announced, the essential components of diagnosing MS have not changed, they have only been specified to include a greater part of the population. It seems that MS is not only a pathophysiological term, but also a practical-clinical one. When diagnosed, it involves further medical treatment. Conclusions: (1) The definition of MS has evolved, becoming simplified so that it can be used in clinical practice. (2) Main components of diagnosing MS have been specified to include a greater part of the population. (3) It seems that MS is not only a pathophysiological term, but also a practical-clinical one. (4) The construct of MS definition has inherent limitations which impact on its clinical usefulness. (5) The current definition might be subject to more modifications following new research studies.

The article reveals conceptual problems of the formation of the concept of “complex identity” in modern humanities based on the analysis of foreign and Russian studies. In scientific history, the conceptual definition of the notion emerged in the last third of the 20th century in sociology and social psychology, however, since the beginning of the 21st century it received further development due to the interdisciplinary research, which allowed scientists to identify complex forms of identity in a dynamically developing world. At the beginning of the 21st century, the interest in identity as a cultural problem increased and it became necessary to study it in the context of modern culture and intercultural relations. Culturological problems allow us to combine existing ideas into a conceptual definition of the concept of “complex identity” and to prioritize research in accordance with modern socio-cultural relations

The aim of the article is an art history analysis of the works on the theme of Azerbaijan by the outstanding Russian painter, people’s artist of the RSFSR Fedor Alexandrovich Modorov (1890–1967). This analysis involves the establishment and refinement of the history of these works’ creation, the classification and definition of their historical and artistic significance. In the study, the author used the historical-comparative method to analyze Modorov’s works and compare them with works of other Russian artists. The research materials were Modorov’s paintings, as well as historical, biographical, and art studies by Soviet, Russian, and Azerbaijani researchers. The problem is characterized by an extremely poor degree of elaboration: on its own, the theme of Azerbaijan was not even distinguished by researchers who studied the artist’s works. Meanwhile, over the years of his creative business trip to Azerbaijan at the initiative of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia in the 1920s–1930s, Modorov painted about 20 paintings and watercolors directly related to Azerbaijani themes. During the study, most of the artist’s works on the theme of Azerbaijan were examined, their historical and artistic significance was determined and substantiated, features associated with national specifics were identified and shown. The history of some paintings is clarified, the works are systematized by genre and theme. Modorov’s works are compared with other artists’ paintings on the topic. Modorov’s Azerbaijani series is divided into four groups according to the thematic principle: historical and revolutionary theme; industrial landscape; city landscape; national theme. Common features were revealed in the ideological, aesthetic, and artistic solutions of the paintings: they all show industrial achievements, development of public life and activities; convey the rich national color and character, everyday characteristics of the people; reflect the panorama of Baku and its historical and architectural monuments. The artistic and historical significance of these works is emphasized, despite the fact that about a hundred years have passed since their creation. It is noted that, at present, when the cultural ties between Azerbaijan and Russia have entered a new phase, coverage of the history of mutual cultural ties is of particular importance as it allows the peoples of both countries to more deeply learn and appreciate the common historical and artistic heritage.

A number of opinions of the modern Ukrainian scientists concerning the definition of the term “Soviet philosophy” and its impact on the further development of a philosophical thought in Ukraine are analyzed in the article. The connection between the intensity of the popularization of the Marxism ideology by the speakers of the Soviet philosophy in Ukraine and the degree of freedom in the evolution of national philosophical traditions (in this case, the Ukrainian philosophy) is established. Also, the notions “Soviet philosophy”, “Ukrainian Soviet philosophy”, with the parallel analysis of the development of some core vectors of the Ukrainian philosophy in the Soviet period, are construed. The influence of the main concepts of the Ukrainian Soviet philosophy on the further development of national philosophy is evaluated. The article states that for the further unbiased development of the Ukrainian philosophical tradition it is necessary to get rid of the obsessive influence of the Soviet past that was under way in the Ukrainian history for many decades of the XX century, and also continues to indirectly influence the contemporary Ukrainian philosophy. Thus, in order to ensure the further free development of the Ukrainian philosophy, domestic scholars should, in an impartial way, investigate the role and place of totalitarian ideology (Soviet philosophy) in the history of the development of the Ukrainian philosophical thought, and thus be able to go their own way. Therefore, it is essential to analyse objectively a number of core and fundamental questions regarding the activities of apologists of the Ukrainian Soviet philosophy.Such analysis will help to generate more objectively the general “outline” in the plane of which the investigated phenomenon developed, since we see that many issues in the evolution of the Soviet philosophy either are not covered at all, or are given somewhat distorted. So now there is an increasingly urgent need to study the declared phenomenon.

The article has as its object the elucidation of the history of the Vyshnivetsky Castle Library, definition of the content of its fund, its historical and cultural significance, correlation of the founder of the Library Mychailo Servaty Vyshnivetsky with the Book. The Vyshnivetsky Castle Library was formed in the Ukrainian historical region of Volyn’, in the Vyshnivets town – “family nest” of the old Ukrainian noble family of the Vyshnivetskies under the “Korybut” coat of arm. The founder of the Library was Prince Mychailo Servaty Vyshnivetsky (1680–1744) – Grand Hetman and Grand Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Vilno Voievoda. He was a politician, an erudite and great bibliophile. In the 30th–40th of the 18th century the main Prince’s residence Vyshnivets became an important centre of magnate’s culture in Rich Pospolyta. M. S. Vyshnivetsky’s contemporaries from the noble class and clergy knew quite well about his library and really appreciated it. According to historical documents 5 periods are defined in the Library’s history. In the historical sources the first place is occupied by old-printed books of Library collection and 7 Library manuscript catalogues dating from 1745 up to the 1835 which give information about quantity and topical structures of Library collection. The Library is a historical and cultural symbol of the Enlightenment epoch. The Enlightenment and those particular concepts and cultural images pertaining to that epoch had their effect on the formation of Library’s fund. Its main features are as follow: comprehensive nature of the stock, predominance of French eighteenth century editions, presence of academic books and editions on orientalistics as well as works of the ideologues of the Enlightenment and new kinds of literature, which generated as a result of this movement – encyclopaedias, encyclopaedian dictionaries, almanacs, etc. Besides the universal nature of its stock books on history, social and political thought, fiction were dominating. The reconstruction of the history of Vyshnivetsky’s Library, the historical analysis of the provenances in its editions give us better understanding of the personality of its owners and in some cases their philanthropic activities, and a better ability to identify the role of this Library in the culture life of society in a certain epoch.
