This study aimed to identify the type and the frequency of speaking strategies used by EFL students at the Northern Border University (NBU). Descriptive analytical method was used in this study. The study sample included two hundred ninety (290) undergraduate students (males & females). Participants were selected by means of cluster random sampling from the colleges in three clusters (science colleges, health colleges, and humanity colleges). To achieve the study objectives, a self-report questionnaire was used to elicit information about speaking strategies from the study participants. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used in the present study through using the latest version of the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). Results revealed that NBU students are not active strategy users. Their overall use of speaking strategies is medium. Significant differences were detected between male and female students in all speaking strategy subcategories in favor of females. In light of the study findings, pedagogical implications as well as some recommendations for needed strategy instruction and suggestions for further research were discussed.

This study examined the progress of English as a foreign language (EFL) writers using the instructional framework of systemic functional linguistics (SFL) and the communities of practice (CoPs) model. The study participants comprised 11 first-year undergraduate students in Japan with intermediate-level English proficiency who were exposed to SFL in a single EFL classroom (CoP). The participants’ genre understanding and meaning-making decisions when writing discussion essays were studied over two semester-long courses. To do so, their developmental changes were analyzed using pre- and post-instructional writing tasks. In particular, their ability to convey interpersonal meaning, such as through the use of modal verbs, was examined and compared between the pre- and post-tasks. To triangulate the findings, participants’ genre awareness in relation to discussion essays was also examined using in-depth qualitative analysis of their self-reflective texts and peer assessments, based on a grounded theory approach. In the pre-writing task, it was apparent that the learners lacked understanding of the components of discussion essay writing. However, analysis of their post-instructional tasks revealed that most had begun to apply the language components required to convey interpersonal meaning in their discussion genre texts. These results suggest that the changes in learner’s genre awareness and knowledge affected the lexicogrammatical features they used when writing discussion essays. Thus, this study concludes that applying the SFL framework to writing instruction enhanced EFL learners’ awareness of textual meaning and their understanding of the function of discussion essay texts.

The purpose of this research was to determine whether Improvisation Technique gave significant difference in teaching transactional and interpersonal conversation text toward students’ speaking ability. This research was also aimed to find out which components of students’ speaking were mostly improved after using Improvisation Technique. True experimental research was used where the sample was chosen by using cluster random sampling. The result of this research showed that the students had made some progresses. It showed that the mean score of students’ speaking ability in experimental class (79.50) was higher than the mean score of students’ speaking ability in control class (72.21). It means that teaching speaking by using Improvisation Technique gives significant effect towards students’ speaking ability. Based on the research finding, it can be concluded that using Improvisation Technique gave significant effect towards students’ speaking ability at class XI of Senior High School 12 Padang. Thus, it is recommended for English teacher should consider the use of Improvisation Technique as an alternative technique in teaching speaking for getting significant effect towards students’ speaking ability.

Purpose: This study explores the occurrence and different levels of anxiety and depression among male and female students who perform or do not perform mudik (homecoming). Investigate the primary source of COVID-19 related information among students. Methods: Online questionnaires consisting of the self-report level of anxiety and depression were delivered to study participants after completing the online informed consent. Quantitative analysis was conducted using the IBM SPSS version 20.0.Results: From a total of 2018 study participants, n=936 were students. Depression (M=8.68; SD= 5.45) was higher among students who did not perform mudik. Meanwhile, the prevalence rate of depression (M=7.18; SD=4.99) was also higher among students who performed mudik. A significant difference [sig (2-tailed) = 0.017; p <0.05)] regarding the level of anxiety was reported higher among female students (M=7.80; SD=4.6) than male students (M=7.03; SD=4.7) and no significant difference [sig (2-tailed) = 0.173; p> 0.05] was reported for the level of depression between male and female students. Instagram was reported as the primary source of COVID-19 related information. Conclusion: This current study supports the notion regarding the occurrence of common mental disorders among students as an impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, regardless of whether homecoming was performed or not. Different levels of anxiety and depression were reported between the male and female student population.

This study reveals the causes that make the EFL students poor in speaking skills. The problem was EFL students’ poor speaking skills at Kandahar University. The study used quantitative approach by developing a questionnaire consisting 15 items based on five likert scales. Two faculties were the target population of the study, and data was collected from 100 students as a random sampling which 81 were male and 19 female students. The data was analyzed and interpreted based on mean and standard deviation through SPSS software (24) version. It was revealed by the present study that different causes like, feeling shyness during presentation, nervousness when speaking with strangers even with family members, weakness of speaking when whole class pay attention, no motivation from peers and feeling fearful when speaking with lectures affect EFL students’ speaking skills.

This study investigates the use of authentic material to improve the EFL students’ writing skills. Data was collected during the academic year 2018–2019. Participants in the study (N = 365) were all enrolled in English writing courses and totaled 200 male students and 165 female students. The results of ANOVA (analysis of variance) tests showed that female students have higher scores than male students, and Social Science students have higher scores than Non-Social Science students. In response to these findings, a program for direct strategy instruction was piloted with an English writing class at one of the sample universities. Encouraging results from this trial program suggest new avenues for approaching the teaching of writing. Keywords: Authentic material, English as a Foreign Language (EFL), Writing Skill.

This research was aimed at analysing students’ strategies in giving compliments. This was descriptive qualitative research using a qualitative approach accompanied by descriptive statistics. This research involved 39 EFL students as the participants in the academic year 2019/2020 selected using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument used to collect the data was a DCT (Discourse Completion Test) containing a number of situations where the students were expected to give their compliment. The result showed that the students used many kinds of strategy in giving compliments. Explicit strategy was the most used by the students. Furthermore, the single explicit strategy appeared the most within overall strategies that appeared in the DCT. This implied that the students prefer to give a direct and simple compliment. One strategy in giving compliment appeared out of the classification which is congratulation attached to unbound semantic formula.
