FEMINIST APPROACH AS AN OPTION IN CONTENDING ECONOMIC RECESSION: HUSBAND FOR HIRE TELENOVELA AS PARADIGM

One of the challenges that has bedevilled today's society, is the total relegation of women to the background in the scheme of things. This is also reflected in films. Feminist scholars, critics and women's movements have relentlessly challenged the stereotypical representations of women in films all over the world, criticizing their depictions as subordinates, emotional cripples, sex-starved spinsters, housewives and psychotics. Despite the efforts to locate a lasting solution, the discrimination still lingers on. The contributions of women towards development in every society if given a more collaborative inclusive environment are immense. This is even so, especially in recent times that call for desperate measures to ending the global economic recession. It is against this backdrop that this study intends to identify how some films are helping or have helped in the redirection and construction of the gender roles of women that will lead to alleviating the economic recession, using the Telenovela, Husband for Hire. The study adopts the qualitative method of research using content analysis to identify how these films have redefined the position and roles of women as well as their capabilities. The findings of the study revealed that films are potent tools for creating and reinforcing images of reality and gender roles that can help in the solutions required for curbing the recent economic recession. Hence, it was recommended that there is the need for reconstruction of content to achieve better portrayals of women and to highlight hard-work as well as the creation of films that reinforce ‘less ego' for men and a more collaborative inclusive environment for women to foster better development.

This article studies the use of field research as an anthropological tool in literary reportage which is a comprehensive element of the creation of journalistic content. Based on the examples of journalistic texts of the 20s by the Austrian writer Joseph Roth, we have analyzed the anthropological methods which were used by this author in his reportages, that is the main objective of this study. Using diachronic comparison, qualitative method and content analysis to evaluate and to explain the concept of Joseph Roth’s texts, as well as the methodology of textual, syntagmatic (by Volodymyr Propp) and paradigmatic analysis (by Claude Levi-Strauss), we have examined the generated meanings in the texts of the mentioned author. As a result of the study, we have identified four methods that Joseph Roth used writing his news reportages in the 1920s, including “In Midday France” and “White Cities”. Those methods are as follows: overt observation, in-depth interviews, fixing details and gaining empirical experience. The modern authors call these methods as classic ones, without which it is impossible to work in this genre. As we have seen from the examples of literary reportages of the French cycle by Joseph Roth, the anthropological tools used by this author for his works contributed to deepening and improving the quality of his texts which is of great significance for our study. Joseph Roth created a panoramic picture of the twentieth century in his texts through watching, communicating and studing. However, it is worth to add that he was often too subjective, suffering harsh criticism for this.

The design of enotourist routes represents an opportunity for the sustainable development of rural territories. This qualitative study was structured in three parts to reach a cohesion model representing the academic literature, visitors, and winemakers. This research focused on the region of La Axarquía in Málaga (Spain) because of its wine and tourist tradition. In relation to the methodology, this study used content analysis techniques for the analysis of both the relevant literature and the questionnaires completed by all the winemakers of the territory, 60 tourists who visited the wineries, and the 10 most representative agents linked to the tourist development of this region. The findings provided a model with the elements to be taken into account in the creation of a wine route or itinerary in any destination of the world. The application of this model will contribute to the creation of new tourist policies that can move towards efficient progress of the region.

This research aims to examine adolescents’ world assumptions, personal attributes and gender roles. The research has attempted to examine the thoughts of adolescents about the world and the ways in which they define themselves as a man or a woman by considering the fact that their lives are affected not only by "traumatic" events but also by several family and environmental dynamics affecting their quality of life. Data was obtained from randomly selected 407 high school students from Kadıköy district in Istanbul province, by applying “World Assumptions Scale (WAS)”, “Extended Personal Attributes Questionnaire (EPAQ)”, “Gender Roles Attitude Scale (GRAS)”, and “Data Collection Form”. Our results showed that there was a significant difference in the scales and sub-dimensions used in the research with respect to gender, grade, family characteristics as well as life standards, balance of standards, adequacy of/change in family income, living with the family without problems, level of satisfaction with the environment, and the desire to change the living environment. In addition to a positive relationship between world assumptions and personal attributes, various correlations in different directions were also found between the sub-dimensions of the scales. Our research has shown that adolescents’ life dynamics can make a difference in their perception of the world and their assumptions about perceiving themselves as moral and valuable individuals, as well as their personal attributes and perceptions about gender roles.

This paper showcases how inherent racism and gender conformity are enforced by the RuPaul’s Drag Race franchise via promotional material, episode content, types of queens featured and judges’ commentary between the first and ninth season of the television series. The research aims to understand how the shift from a once LGBTQ+ specific market to a mainstream audience has further perpetuated the idealized forms of beauty and femininity. The content analysis of the first and ninth season showcases how RPDR is seeking to fit a pre-constructed stereotype created by the ‘imagined’ heteronormative/cisgender audience since becoming mainstream. Viewers are comfortable with consuming content that exists in their current environment or in which they can relate to, which makes it difficult to celebrate queens that deviate from heteronormativity at the franchise level. With the shift from Logo TV to VH1, LGBTQ+ focused companies are losing opportunities for sponsorship and marketing directly to their intended niche audience. Overall, the television series is supposed to be put in place to celebrate LGBTQ+ culture and to be a progressive step in which minorities are being showcased in mainstream media, but they are not being conveyed in an accurate or justified manner. Queens such as Shea Couleé, Peppermint and Valentina are essentially robbed of their chance to win RPDR due to their race, and in Peppermint’s case specifically, her transness.

Channelization of rivers, along with beautiication and structured designated landscape design along the riverbanks, are parts of the development that occur in the urban centres around the world. Such developments are often taken up toprevent natural catastrophes such as loods, without considering the nature of the river itself. Realizing this mistake and its adverse effects towards the environment, many developed countries, such as the U.S.A., U.K., Japan, China and, many more, have started to ecologically reorganize riverfront designs to ensure that rivers are restored to their natural condition. Various principles of ecological riverfront design are available, but the information is patchy and in different documents. Hence, this research aimed at redeining the principles of ecological riverfront design. A qualitative method, using comprehensive content analysis of journals and reports on ecological riverfront designs and ecological riverfront design guidelines from selected countries, was employed to redeine such principles. In summary, these principles could become a reference for architects, planners, engineers and other related professional bodies to reconsider the ecological aspect of riverfronts while planning and creating the urban spaces along the Riverfront Designriverbanks, thereby indirectly promoting urban sustainability within the urban cities.

The sufferings of women in the society and other acts of discrimination against women resulted in the rise of women or feminist movements worldwide especially in the Northern countries of the globe. As a result of the dehumanization of women in most communities of the world, many activists and women movements evolved to proffer solutions to women and gender issues. This paper examined the contributions of international, regional, national and local women’s movements to development. The paper delved into the Waves of Feminism which made various changes and resulted in major freedom and development for women in education, family life, health wise, employment and politics. It looked at the importance of women to economic development. Various women’s movements and networks were discussed. Challenges of these women’s movements were identified and recommendations were made. The paper employed secondary sources for information for the study.

Sarjan on nähty sekä rikkovan että toistavan olemassa olevia luokkaan, sukupuoleen, etnisyyteen ja ihonväriin liittyviä stereotyyppisiä representaatioita.Sarjamuotoisuus on mahdollistanut erilaisia tulkintoja, sillä jaksosta toiseen eri henkilöhahmojen motivaatioita määritellään uusissa konteksteissa. Sarjan monipaikkaista kerrontaa rakennetaan vaihtuvilla kerronan näkökulmilla, kuten takaumilla. Tällä tavoin aiemmin esitettyjä tulkintoja esimerkiksi hahmojen syistä joutua vankilaan voidaan kääntää päälaelleen.Representaatioiden joustavuus mahdollistaa kurittomuutta kyseenalaistamalla sitä, millainen naiseus on ihannoitavaa. Tarinan päähahmot liikkuvat sujuvasti erilaisten sukupuolittuneiden normien lomitse haastaen oletuksia ”miesten” tai ”naisten” rooleista. Tuon esille, miten valitut kerrontamuodot luovat kuvaa naisista, jotka haastavat yksiulotteisia määrittelyjä ja olemassa olevia sosiaalisia ja symbolisia käytänteitä toimimalla tavoilla, jotka rikkovat naisten sukupuoleen, luokkaan, etnisyyteen, ihonväriin tai ikään liitettyjä käytösnormeja. Unruly Women – Repositioning Women in Orange Is the New BlackOrange is the New Black (Netflix, 2013–), a women’s prison drama-comedy, has inspired critical discussion on the diversity of its representations of women. The series has been claimed to both break down and reproduce existing stereotypes of class, ethnicity, race and gender. Varied interpretations are partially explained by the serial format: every episode re-frames characters, their motivations and histories by using changing narrative perspectives and contradictory flashbacks.The constant adjustment of representations emphasizes also the unruliness of the characters. In this series, being a woman has no fixed meanings. The main characters move past the gendered norms and challenge existing gender roles, for example by welcoming criminality into the womanhood. Additionally, intimate imaginings of everyday bodily functions, varied sexualities, and bodies of different shapes, races and ages redefine idealized femininity in American popular culture.In this article, I analyze from feminist and intersectional perspective how the serial format of Netflix affects the representations and narration of women in Orange is the New Black. I will bring forward the narrative solutions that imagine women who at the same time are identifiable and challenge existing gender practices by breaking down the expectations for socially desired behavior.

This study seeks to expand the horizon of existing literatures on the dialectic of religion, legal culture and local dynamics by comparing two great Muslim rulers in two different parts of the world in the first Islamic millennium: Mughal Emperor Akbar and Mataram’s Sultan Agung. It specifically aims to analyze historical accounts on the dynamic relations between Islamic norms and local culture with corresponding results of distinctive ways of ruling by these two great rulers. While both rulers Akbar and Sultan Agung shared similar concerns in political imagination, their difference was particularly shown in the representation of religion in the courts’ political and legal culture, with the latter was heavily determined by different challenges they faced during their rule. This paper argues that a comparative overview of these two great figures, who ruled in different parts of the world and at rather successive periods, would be beneficial for the studies of religion-culture relations in flagging the variation and extent of manifestation of Islamic global norms in local legal cultures which heavily determined by their corresponding local dynamics. As a literary or library research, it uses eclectic, blended, with qualitative method in content analysis.[Studi ini berupaya memperluas horison literatur-literatur yang ada tentang dialektika agama, budaya hukum dan dinamika lokal dengan membandingkan dua penguasa besar Muslim di dua belahan dunia yang berbeda pada millennia Islam pertama yaitu Raja Akbar dari Dinasti Mughal dan Sultan Agung Kerajaan Mataram. Secara spesifik, studi ini bertujuan untuk menganalisa catatan-catatan historis relasi dinamis antara norma Islam dengan budaya lokal dengan hasil temuan yang menunjukkan cara berkuasa/memerintah yang berbeda diantara dua penguasa tersebut. Sementara keduanya (Akbar dan Agung) memiliki kemiripan dalam imajinasi politik, di sisi lain, perbedaan mereka ditunjukkan dalam hal representasi agama dalam budaya hukum dan politik terutama ditentukan oleh perbedaan tantangan yang mereka hadapi ketika mereka berkuasa. Studi ini membuktikan bahwa dengan membandingkan dua figur yang memerintah di belahan dunia yang berbeda pada masa yang berurutan, akan memberikan manfaaat terhadap studi relasi agama dan budaya dalam mewarnai variasi dan lingkup manifestasi norma-norma global Islam dalam budaya hukum lokal yang banyak ditentukan oleh dinamika lokal yang bersesuaian. Sebagai penelitian kepustakaan (literer), studi ini menggunakan pendekatan eklektik dengan metode kualitatif dalam analisis ini (content analysis)].

Abstract For decades, physical activity contexts have been inherently exclusionary toward LGBTQ+ participation through their perpetuation of practices and systems that support sexuality- and gender-based discrimination. Progress toward LGBTQ+ inclusivity within physical activity has been severely limited by a lack of actionable and practical suggestions. The purpose of this study was to garner an extensive account of suggestions for inclusivity from LGBTQ+ adults. Using an online cross-sectional survey, LGBTQ+ adults (N = 766) were asked the following open-ended question, “in what ways do you think physical activity could be altered to be more inclusive of LGBTQ+ participation?” The resulting texts were coded using inductive qualitative content analysis. All coding was subject to critical peer review. Participants’ suggestions have been organized and presented under two overarching points of improvement: (a) creation of safe(r) spaces and (b) challenging the gender binary. Participants (n = 558; 72.8%) outlined several components integral to the creation and maintenance of safe(r) spaces such as: (i) LGBTQ+ memberships, (ii) inclusivity training for fitness facility staff, (iii) informative advertisement of LGBTQ+ inclusion, (iv) antidiscrimination policies, and (v) diverse representation. Suggestions for challenging the gender binary (n = 483; 63.1%) called for the creation of single stalls or gender-neutral locker rooms, as well as for the questioning of gender-based stereotypes and binary divisions of gender within physical activity (e.g., using skill level and experience to divide sports teams as opposed to gender). The findings of this study represent a multitude of practical suggestions for LGBTQ+ inclusivity that can be applied to a myriad of physical activity contexts.

AbstractIn the Hungarian folk revival, Hungarian Roma (Gypsies) serve as both privileged informants and exotic Others. The musicians of the revival known as the táncház (dance-house) movement rely heavily on rural Rom musicians, especially those from Transylvania, as authentic sources of traditional Hungarian repertoire and style. Táncház rhetoric centres on the trope of localized authenticity; but the authority wielded by rural Rom musicians, who carry music both between villages and around the world, complicates the fixed boundaries that various powerful stakeholders would place on the tradition. Drawing on media sources and on fieldwork in Hungary and Romania, I examine how authenticity and ‘Gypsiness’ are presented and controlled by the scholars, musicians, and administrators who lead the táncház movement, in particular in the context of camps and workshops dedicated to Hungarian folk music and dance. Organizers often erect clear boundaries of status, genre, and gender roles through such events, which, among other things, address the anxiety raised by Rom musicians’ power in liminal spaces. In addition, I look at how Rom musicians both negotiate with the táncház’s aesthetic of authenticity and challenge it musically. Finally, I discuss how musicians and the crowds that gather to hear and dance to their music together create a carnival atmosphere, breaking down some of the boundaries that organizers work so hard to create. Throughout, I demonstrate that liminality is an extraordinarily pertinent lens through which to view Roma participation in the Hungarian folk music scene.
