Plant natural products have a long history of being a rich source of neuroactive drugs. The total phenolic and flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity of ethanol, chloroform and aqueous extracts of AlgerianMedicagoSativaL, leaves were measured to discover new potential sources of Algerian natural antioxidants and neuroactives. All extracts were non-neurotoxic up to 1 mg/ ml for 24 h exposure. The total phenolcontent of M.Sativa extracts ranged between 38 and 69 mg GAE per g extracts. All of the extracts displayed antioxidant capacityassessed by two methods, but at different levels depending on the concentration and the extraction solvent used. The overall antioxidant potency was in the order water > chloroform> ethanol extracts, and the phenolic content exhibited a positive correlation with the antioxidant activity of M. Sativa extracts.Despite a weaker antioxidant activity, the ethanol extract elicited a calcium spike and suppressed the KCl-induced depolarisation response in neurons, indicating effect on ligand-and/or voltage gated calcium channels. In contrast, the chloroform and water extractsdisplayed no apparent direct functional effects. In conclusion, the antioxidant and functional properties related to phenolic content of Algerian Medicago Sativa L. in water and ethanol extracts, respectively.

Haloxylon scoparium is a plant widely used in traditional medicine for the treatment of diabetes. Hence, this study focuses on the mineralogical and chemical composition and evaluation of the antidiabetic and antioxidant activities of the aerial part of this species. The mineralogical analysis was done by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The phytochemical study consisted in the preparation of different extracts from the aerial part by aqueous and organic extraction using Soxhlet and cold maceration. Then, phytochemical screening was performed on the plant powder and on the extracts, which is completed by spectrophotometric quantification of total polyphenols, flavonoids, and catechic tannins. The evaluation of antidiabetic activity was done by three enzymes: a-amylase, a-glucosidase, and ß-galactosidase, and that of antioxidant activity was done by five methods: H2O2, DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, and reducing power (RP). Mineralogical analysis revealed the presence of iron, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium, copper, calcium, strontium, selenium, and zinc. The studied part is rich in alkaloids, flavonoids, catechic tannins, and saponins. The methanolic extract is rich in total polyphenols (161.65 ± 1.52 Ug EAG/mg E), and the ethyl acetate extract has high levels of catechic tannins (23.69 ± 0.6 Ug EC/mg E). In addition, the decoctate expresses a high flavonoid content of 306.59 ± 4.35 Ug EQ/mg E. The in vitro evaluation of the antidiabetic activity showed that the decoctate has a higher inhibitory capacity on a-glucosidase (IC50 = 181.7 ± 21.15 ug/mL) than acarbose (IC50 = 195 ± 6.12 ug/mL). The results of the antioxidant activity showed that the methanolic extract and the decoctate present a percentage of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) scavenging (20.91 ± 0.27 and 16.21 ± 0.39%) higher than that of ascorbic acid (14.35 ± 0.002%). Positive correlations obtained between the total polyphenol content and the antioxidant activity of the extracts were studied. A positive correlation of a-amylase inhibitory activity was also recorded with the antioxidant activity tests.

Aim. To determine the total polyphenols and antioxidant capacity and their correlation with antimicrobial and fungicidal properties in some species of the genus Allium growing in Tajikistan.Materials and methods. The objects of the study were 15 kinds of the Amaryllidaceae family. Antibacterial onions were studied by the disk diffusion method against 4 types of microorganisms (test strains) and 1 type of yeast fungus. In the presence of total polyphenols, the content in μg of Gallic acid (GA) per ml of plant extract was measured. To determine the antioxidant activity, a solution of ABTS K2S2O8 was used. Trolox was used as a standard.Results. The maximum content of total polyphenols is characterized by ethanol extracts of A. Carolinianum, A. altaicum, A. elatum, A. oschaninii, A. ramosum, A. hymenorhisum. At the same time, their lowest amount was found in the bulbs of A. longicuspis. A. shoenoprasum, which is statistically significantly lower than in all the above-listed species of this plant group. The extracts from the stems of A. carolinianum, A. elatum, and A. pamiricum had the highest antioxidant effect. There is a direct weak correlation between biologically active components with antimicrobial and fungicidal activity in A. oshaninii and A. suworowii, depending on the altitude gradient.Conclusions. The results allow suggesting that the above-ground and underground parts of some wild-growing endemic species of the genus Allium have different degrees of antioxidant activity due to total polyphenols. The content of total polyphenols and the antioxidant capacity of extracts obtained from various plants in different in large ranges. In some cases, there are direct correlations between the content of polyphenols, antioxidant properties, antimicrobial and fungal properties.

The use of antioxidants is an effective approach to prevent symptoms related to photo-induced aging of the skin. The aim of this research work was to formulate and evaluate a polyherbal antioxidant face cream using the ethanol extracts of Tetracarpidium conophorum and Ocimum gratissimum. The ethanol extract of the herbs was incorporated at varying concentrations into six different emulsion bases. Antioxidant activity of the formulations was assessed using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl method. The formulations were evaluated for pH, viscosity, spreadability and microbial content. Accelerated stability tests were performed on all the formulations to assess stability at varying storage conditions. All the formulations showed good spreadability, good consistency, homogeneity, appearance, pH and no phase separation occurred. Non-Newtonian pseudo-plastic flow influenced by increased shear was experienced by all the formulations. Concentration dependent antioxidant activity was observed with FC2 and FC4 showing the highest antioxidant activity with IC50 value of 80.1 and 83.2 μg/ml, respectively. The polyherbal antioxidant preparation containing extracts of T. conophorum and O. gratissimum shown to exhibit excellent antioxidant properties. The antioxidant activity of cookies prepared by the addition of sugarbeet dietary fibers was investigated in order to estimate their influence on functional characteristics and shelf-life of cookies. Treated fiber (TF) was obtained from sugarbeet by extraction with sulfurous acid (75 °C at pH = 5.7during 60 min) and treatment with hydrogen peroxide (20 g/LH2O2 at pH = 11 during 24 h). The fiber obtained was dried (80 °C), ground and sieved. TF was investigated in comparison with commercially available Fibrex®. The cookies were prepared by the addition of 0, 7, 9 and 11% of sugarbeet dietary fiber as a substitute for wheat flour in the formulation of cookies. The antioxidant properties of cookies were tested every 7 days using a DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity test during 6 weeks of storage at room temperature (23 ± 1 ºC). The obtained results indicated that substitution of wheat flour with Fibrex® in the formulation of cookies upgraded the antioxidant activity, i.e. the functional characteristics of Fibrex®-enriched cookies and could prolong their shelf-life. In contrast, TF did not increase the antioxidant activity of TF-enriched cookies. The better antioxidant activities of Fibrex®-enriched cookies could be attributed to the presence of ferulic acid.
