Researchers have studied academic orientation—students’ valuing of and commitment to education—as in part a function of a cultural fit between students’ cultural capital, competencies, identity, and the institutional culture of the education system. Recent research on students’ aspirations and commitment highlights the moral undertones of such cultural fit. Scholars have identified the perceived moral connotations of becoming “an educated person” and illustrated how students’ academic orientation may be intertwined with the unique moral culture of the education system. Neoinstitutional scholars have examined modern education systems’ emphasis on an individualizing type of moral culture, that is, an institutional moral culture emphasizing individual autonomy, rights, and achievement over traditional mores, knowledge, and social hierarchies. Scholars have yet to bridge these streams of research by examining the link between students’ personal moral culture and the institutional moral culture of education systems. In this study, we consider whether students whose moral orientation matches the individualizing moral culture of education systems are more academically oriented. We conceptualize this link as moral fit, and we use moral foundations theory to identify students’ personal moral culture. Analysis of a unique sample of students drawn from all secondary schools in Iceland (N = 10,525) shows (1) individualizing moral intuitions (those that emphasize the individual as the basic moral unit) are associated with a greater academic orientation, net of parental involvement, cultural capital, and other important controls, and (2) this association is only lightly moderated by differences in the school structure.

A key role of dialect dictionaries in the preservation of the national memory of the people and national moral values is emphasized in the paper. It has been stated that dialect vocabulary compiled in the dictionary is of great heuristic value, as it expresses a historical progress of the nation in its work, with customs and beliefs, the whole outlook in general, which is why it is a required source for the reconstruction of the ancient condition of a material and moral culture of native speakers. It has been found out that some specialists in dialectology-lexicography mark the registries of dialect words differently (dictionary, short dictionary, lexicon, vocabulary, materials for dictionary, small dictionary, etc.). Ukrainian dialect dictionaries were analyzed as to their completeness of vocabulary presentations, the coverage of dialect areas and some peculiarities of the representation of regional vocabulary in thematic dictionaries which contained the dialects of East Podillia. The purpose and the task of the compilation of the Dictionary of East-Podillia dialects as well as its format/size were defined. Foreign analogs of such creation, in particular Podillia ones, were noticed. The principles of the compilation of a multi-volume edition of the Dictionary of East-Podillia dialects according to the thematic groups were worked out. The importance of the Dictionary of East-Podillia dialects for Ukrainian language studies has been underlined, as it will become a profound source for further language research.

PurposeDeservingness theory is gaining popularity in the study of European welfare attitudes but has found little application in the United States. In this article, the author explores what happens if deservingness theory is applied in the study of American perceptions of deservingness and ask which criteria Americans use when deciding the deservingness of needy individuals.Design/methodology/approach To capture the variation in American perceptions of deservingness, the author compared qualitative data from two cases. The first case is the liberal northeastern city of Boston, Massachusetts, where 19 interviews were collected, and the second case is the conservative southern city of Knoxville, Tennessee, where 26 interviews were collected. To ensure that any differences in the use of deservingness criteria are due to differences in moral culture, the author chose to interview a similar segment in both cases – the white middle class.FindingsThe author found that interviewees in both cases defined deserving individuals as those whose neediness is due to factors beyond their control and undeserving individuals as those whose neediness is caused by their own poor work ethic. Furthermore, the author found three so-called context-related criteria that do not fit into the existing deservingness framework: a criterion following a cost-benefit logic, the principle of universalism and a principle based on family obligations.Originality/valueThese findings confirm trends in recent deservingness studies indicating that the sensitivity of deservingness theory to the importance of moral culture in the use of both deservingness criteria and context-related criteria must continue to develop.

The problem of the values of Ukrainian society is one of the most important and debatable problems in modern scientific discourse. This is due to the transition of our state from the traditional model of the state, in which there is authoritarianism, secrecy, to a socially oriented society and a democratic, open state.Accordingly, there is a change in values, which is an integral part of the existence of any society and state. To replace the Soviet system of declaration of surrogatecollective, paternalistic values, which existed for several decades, a new system is formed, which provides a clear orientation of Ukrainians to European values, the significant achievements of the Ukrainian people, the moral recovery of society, increasing values and culture of civil society. Honor and dignity of Ukrainians, which is an indispensable basis for the development of moral culture of society. The purpose and objectives of the article. Based on the achievements of modern science and philosophy, to analyze the essence of the moral culture of the people, the place of human dignity and its importance in moral culture; to characterize and classify the main factors of dignity formation in the moral culture of the people. The research methodology is complex and is based on philosophical-anthropological and philosophical-cultural analysis of the problems of formation of moral culture of the Ukrainian people and its structural element - human dignity. Research results. The most important, synthetic, integral consequence of human development is moral culture. Moral culture is the level of assimilation by an individual or a group of people of existing moral values in society, the degree of their involvement in the moral aspects of activity, a measure of personal moral development. Practical and spiritual factors include, first of all, ethnic stereotypes specific to a certain people (traditions, customs, rituals, typical traits of character and behavior, dominant emotions, folk crafts, entertainment, games), as well as historical memory, established symbols, folk shrines. Historical memory, preserving every page of life, the people’s struggle for social, political and national rights at all stages of its development, serves as a solid foundation on which national self-consciousness is successfully formed.Institutional factors are important for the formation of dignity in the moral culture of the people. These include nation- and state-building activities of public authorities, national elite, political parties, religious and public organizations. If the state creates conditions in society for the assimilation of the historical and cultural experience accumulated by the nation, it contributes to the education of national self-esteem, ie awareness of community members of their belonging to the nation, their duty to the community of like-minded people. Conclusions. Summarizing the results of the study, we can formulate the following conclusions. Human dignity in the moral culture of the Ukrainian people is the result of the interaction of a combination of many factors that determine its structure and content. The process of its formation is quite long, complex and contradictory. This is due to the fact that it is human dignity that provides the spiritual, ideological foundation for the functioning of national communities, contributing to the development of promising guidelines for the development of the nation and the state.

The relevance of the study is defined by the need to identify the current moral level of pre-schoolers, to identify factors that positively and negatively affect the moral culture of the child, as well as to develop a methodological foundation for the effective and controlled development of moral culture, ethical principles and empathy among children of 4-5 years old considering the behavioural component. This study focuses on assessing the real levels of moral and cultural development among children, their systematisation and analysis, and making recommendations for teachers and parents to develop moral qualities in a child. The leading method for studying this problem is an experimental method that enables a comprehensive assessment of the moral culture among preschool children. In addition, methods such as structural analysis, comparative method, statistical method, synthesis and deduction methods, and the method of classification were used in the study. The study presents the results of an experiment to establish the level of development of the behavioural component of moral culture among preschool children, reveals the weaknesses of the development of this component, identifies methods of pedagogical influence on the development of moral culture, and makes recommendations for activities, pedagogical methods, and techniques that can be used to make a predictable positive impact on the moral culture of the child. The study materials are of practical value for teachers of preschool educational institutions, child psychologists, as well as teachers and students of pedagogical programmes, and parents.

Students’ mastery of the content of musical pieces in different artistic genres provides for a versatile development of their moral culture as the basis of social culture and cultural competence. The condition for the success of this process lies in the musical activity transcending to the creative level allowing access to the imaginative and emotional “overtones” in the sound of music. Involving all children and adolescents in musical creativity is possible through the implementation of the pedagogical technology of interactive music-making that involves a complementary interaction with the outside source of sound. A pedagogical experiment conducted as a part of concerts of the artistic and educational project “Music-making for all” that were designed based on the aforementioned technology demonstrates students’ successful mastery of the content of the performed pieces, as well as the development of the required characteristics of social culture in them.

Chinese road film, as a unique and special cultural product, plays an important role in the self-examination of social moral culture and the expression of human emotion. It is a known that there was a scarcity of really excellent works from the development process of Chinese road film in the recent two decades. In addition, Chinese road film faces dilemma of either the lack or rigidity of artistic themes, the strange and disharmonious film fusion, the loss of desire in the consumerism circumstance and the low artistry which exists in line with the rapid pace under the impact of commercial interests.

Problems of morality have not lost significance in all times of human existence, but contained different accents in social manifestations. Modern anthropocentric tendencies of social life have also changed value orientations, because material values, human self-presentation in society, the desire for recognition as a manifestation of self-worth, somewhat level the spiritual, moral and ethical, cultural values. Therefore, consideration of the tasks of educating the moral culture of in a multicultural space is significant, especially today. The education of the moral culture of student youth in the spirit of universal ideals begins in early childhood, which is an important stage in human development. After all, at this time the necessary skills begin to form, such as: thinking, conscious perception of the world around and one’s own place in it, communication with other people. The task of moral culture of student youth in a multicultural space is to build a process of transformation of socially significant norms, principles governing relationships, universal moral values into individual qualities and the formation on this basis of children’s views and beliefs. The main attention is paid to emphasizing the importance of educating the moral culture of youth at the university in a multicultural space. Abstract. Historiographic analysis of the works of Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor M.M. Gromyko makes it possible to understand how the “Orthodox trend” took shape in Russian ethnography in the post-Soviet period. One of the major figures in the modern ethnography of the Russian people, M.M. Gromyko has come a long way in science, at one time she was distinguished by the Slavophil approach (as far as it was possible at one time or another) in the study of the Russian people. Then, in the 1990s, the secular approach was replaced by a religious one. Her main achievement was research in the field of moral culture. Today the Orthodox direction is on the way to developing its own methodology, which should correspond to the studied Russian traditional culture.
