Asset’s possession and food consumption level of tribal people in Bangladesh express their socioeconomic status. The study was conducted to analyze the socioeconomic characteristics, measure the livelihood assets, and determine the calorie intake level of the sample households. Primary data were collected through field survey using an interview schedule from 60 tribal households. Tabular analysis and capital asset pentagon from DFID livelihood framework were used for data analysis. Household consumption data were converted to per person per day calorie intake level. The major findings of the study were that about 41.67% of the respondents were being 15-29 years of age, 30% respondents’ education was in the secondary level, average family size was 5.81, 40% of the respondents were occupied with agriculture as their primary occupation, average annual income and expenditure were Tk. 258560 (US$3015.28) and Tk. 242373.50 (US$2826.51), respectively. The livelihood assets were moderate. About 83.34% of the respondents belonged to the poor category and rest 16.67% of the respondents belonged to non-poor category. About 98.33% and 96.67% respondents suggested that, if job opportunity increases and ensure proper education; then their socioeconomic improvement will be faster. So, government and other organizations need to come forward to create more employment opportunity and education facilities for improving their livelihood pattern and food security status.

The objective of this study is to study the effects of dietary intake levels on energy metabolism, carbon (C), and nitrogen (N) balance and to determine the maintenance requirements of energy and protein for male sika deer during their growing period. A total of 16 1-year-old male sika deer with similar body weight (BW) (63.25 ± 2.42 kg) were selected, with four animals per feed intake level. The feeding levels of the four groups for deer were 40, 60, 80, and 100% of the recommended amount, respectively. The nutrient digestibility and methane production were measured through digestion trials and respiratory trials. A 4 × 4 Latin Square design was performed in a respirometry trial. The results show that the apparent digestibility of C and N gradually increased as the level of feed intake decreased. Furthermore, with a decrease in feed intake level, the metabolic energy intake (MEI), heat production (HP), and retained energy (RE) of male sika deer significantly decreased (P < 0.01). The requirements of metabolic energy for maintenance (MEm) and net energy for maintenance (NEm) of growing deer are 251.17 and 223.62 kJ kg−1BW0.75d−1, respectively, as estimated according to the logarithmic regression equations between HP and MEI. The net N requirement for maintenance (NNm) and net protein requirement for maintenance (NPm) of growing male sika deer based on the linear relationship between retained nitrogen (RN) and daily nitrogen intake (NI) were 251.8 mg kg−1BW0.75d−1 and 1.57 g kg−1BW0.75d−1, respectively. The NEm and NPm values obtained from this experiment fill the gap in net energy and protein requirements and serve as basic data for establishing the nutritional standards forsika deer breeding in China.

The amino acid-based formulae were extensively added to diet of children for the treatment of Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP), and the nutrition and growth situation of children were evaluated after giving new dietary intervention. Patients were randomly divided into restricted diet group (n=30) and dietary guidance group (n=30). Besides, 30 cases with bronchiolitis who had normal diet were selected as the control group. The dietary questionnaire was designed to record the types and intakes of various foods taken by children every day, and the intake levels of nutrients were analyzed. Physical examination, biochemical analysis of blood and urine routine were carried out to evaluate the effect of dietary guidance on their growth and development. The results showed that restricted diet group had lower levels of nutrient intake and the actual/recommended percentage. However, overall nutrient intake level of the dietary guidance group was higher, basically equal to the recommended intake level. Besides, the actual intake and actual/recommended percentage of nutrients of dietary guidance group were significantly higher than those of restricted diet group (p<0.05). Dietary guidance can improve nutrients and protein intake of children with HSP, and reduce the relapse of rash and incidence of complications.

Abstract Objectives This study aimed to explore the perceived barriers to fruit and vegetable intake among Korean young adults in their 20s, and the potential to increase it. Methods An on-line survey was conducted from February 18th to 24th, 2020 to a total of 1, 277 Korean young adults in their 20s. An on-line survey questionnaire was developed to assess respondents’ preference, acceptance, perceived daily intake level of fruit and vegetables, and perceived barriers in each step from planning, purchasing, storing, to preparation/cooking. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and significant differences in fruit and vegetable consumption (i.e., preference, acceptance perceived daily intake level) were measured according to respondents’ socio-demographic characteristics (gender, education level. income level, and type of household) by using t-tests and ANOVA. Significant differences in perceived barriers were analyzed across three groups (low, medium, and high) based on perceived daily intake level of fruit and vegetables. Multiple linear regression analyses, adjusted for gender, income/education level and household type, were performed to examine the associations between barriers and perceived daily intake level of fruit and vegetables. Results On an average, preference and acceptance exceeded perceived daily intake level of both fruit and vegetables. The perceived daily intake level of both fruit and vegetables were significantly lower in female, low-income, and single-person household groups. The perceived barriers to each step from menu through preparation/cooking were rated significantly higher in low-intake groups of both fruit and vegetables. The results of multiple regression analyses revealed that menu planning was the major barrier to both fruit and vegetable consumption, followed by storing. Conclusions This study suggests that future interventions address perceived barriers associated with menu planning and storing of both fruit and vegetables to boost the consumption among Korean young adults. Special attention needs to be paid to those who are female, with lower incomes, and living in single-person households. OBJECTIVE: To assess total usual nutrient intakes from foods and dietary supplements by age, sex, physical activity, and nutritional status, and to compare usual nutrient intakes to the Dietary Reference Intakes among non-users and users of dietary supplements in an urban population. METHODS: Cross-sectional population-based survey with 506 adults conducted in the city of Brasília, Brazil, using 24h food recalls. The 24-HR was collected on two nonconsecutive days, for which individuals reported all food, supplements, and beverages consumed in the previous 24 hours. The estimates of mean and the distribution percentiles were adjusted to reflect usual nutrient intake using the Iowa State University method. The prevalence of inadequate micronutrient intake was estimated according to sex using the Estimated Average Requirement (EAR), and values above the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) were also considered. Also, a comparison was made of the total mean usual intake between supplement users and non-users according to BMI and physical activity. RESULTS: The total mean usual dietary intake was significantly higher among users than non-users of dietary supplements (p ≤ 0.02). Dietary supplement use increased intakes of nutrients and decreased prevalence of inadequacy according to sex, with only small (typically < 13%) increases in the population exceeding the Tolerable Upper Intake Level. There was a significant interaction between physical activity and BMI categories with supplement use. CONCLUSIONS: The population that consumes food supplements comprises individuals with more advanced age, female, normal BMI, and physically active. Our findings show that the use of supplements appears beneficial to attain nutrient adequacy. Careful monitoring of intake from food and supplements is recommended, and the statistical methods must be powerful enough to achieve relevant information.

The impact of a challenge with moderately pathogenic <em>Escherichia coli</em> O128:C6 on the digestive physiology and gut bacterial community of growing rabbits under two feeding programmes was analysed. Upon weaning (28 d old), 180 rabbits were allocated to four groups (9 cages of 5 rabbits per group) for two weeks: group C100 was non-inoculated and fed <em>ad libitum</em>; C70 was non-inoculated and feed intake was limited to 70% of C100; I100 and I70 were inoculated and fed <em>ad libitum</em> or restricted to 70%, respectively. At the age of 31 d (D0), rabbits were orally inoculated with <em>E. coli</em> (2.2×108 colony forming units/rabbit). The effects of inoculation spiked on D4, with a 28% lower growth rate for I100 than for C100. Limited feed intake reinforced the inoculation’s effects on growth: I70 had a 66% lower growth rate than C70. The morbidity rate peaked at 42% between D4 and D7 for inoculated groups, without significant effect of the feed intake level. <em>E. coli</em> concentration peaked on D5/D6 in the caecum of the I100 and I70 groups. Inoculation reduced by 30% (<em>P</em>&lt;0.05) the villus height/crypt depth and villus/crypt area ratios in the ileum, with no significant effect of the intake level. Inoculation was associated with a tenfold increase in serum haptoglobin (<em>P</em>&lt;0.001) for both <em>ad libitum</em> and restricted rabbits. On D5, the inoculation modified the structure of the ileal bacterial community (<em>P</em>&lt;0.05), but not that of the caecum. The feed intake level did not affect either the structure or diversity of the bacterial community, both in the ileum and caecum.

Background: Seaweeds and kelps, also known as macroalgae, have long been common in the East-Asian diet. During recent years, macroalgae have entered the global food market, and a variety of macroalgae products are now available for consumers. Some macroalgae species are known to be particularly rich in iodine, but little data regarding the iodine content of macroalgae-containing foods exists. Objective: The aim of this research study was to analyse the iodine content in a large variety of commercially available macroalgae-containing foods and supplements and to evaluate whether such products are sources of adequate dietary iodine. Design: Ninety-six different products were collected after surveying the Norwegian market for commercially available macroalgae products, collected from three categories: 1) wholefood macroalgae products (n = 43), 2) macroalgae-containing foods (n = 39), and 3) dietary supplements containing macroalgae (n = 14). All products were analysed for iodine content by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Results: The iodine content in one portion of wholefood macroalgae products ranged from 128 to 62,400 μg. In macroalgae-containing foods, the iodine content ranged from 30 to 25,300 μg per portion, and in supplements it ranged from 5 to 5,600 μg per daily dose. The species with the highest analysed iodine content were oarweed, sugarkelp and kombu, with mean iodine levels of 7,800, 4,469 and 2,276 μg/g, respectively. For 54 products, the intake of one portion or dose would exceed the tolerable upper intake level (UL) for iodine. Discussion and conclusion: The iodine content in the included products was variable and for most products high, exceeding the tolerable upper intake level (UL) if consumed as a serving or portion size. The labelling of macroalgae species included, and declaration of iodine content, were inadequate or inaccurate for several products. As macroalgae-containing products are unreliable iodine sources, inclusion of such products in the diet may pose a risk of consuming excessive amounts of iodine.
