ChiroVox: a public library of bat calls

Recordings of bat echolocation and social calls are used for many research purposes from ecological studies to taxonomy. Effective use of these relies on identification of species from the recordings, but comparative recordings or detailed call descriptions to support identification are often lacking for areas with high biodiversity. The ChiroVox website (www.chirovox.org) was created to facilitate the sharing of bat sound recordings together with their metadata, including biodiversity data and recording circumstances. To date, more than 30 researchers have contributed over 3,900 recordings of nearly 200 species, making ChiroVox the largest open-access bat call library currently available. Each recording has a unique identifier that can be cited in publications; hence the acoustic analyses are repeatable. Most of the recordings available through the website are from bats whose species identities are confirmed, so they can be used to determine species in recordings where the bats were not captured or could not be identified. We hope that with the help of the bat researcher community, the website will grow rapidly and will serve as a solid source for bat acoustic research and monitoring.

The Pirate Archives, William Ready Division of Archives and research collections, McMaster University

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss the history and contents of an archival resource that is of interest to scholars of historical marketing. The Pirate Group Inc. archive, held by McMaster University Library’s William Ready Division of Archives and Research Collections consists of over 27,000 sound recordings and 84 metres of textual records, documenting the work of Pirate, an award-winning Toronto-based advertising company founded in 1990. The comprehensiveness of the archives, which includes tens of thousands of advertising “spots”, gives researchers unprecedented access to the creative forces behind some of the most memorable advertisements produced in Canada. Design/methodology/approach This paper aims to answer the following questions: what is the Pirate Group Inc. and what is their documentary legacy? How can scholars of marketing history benefit from the records contained within the Pirate Group Inc. archive? How can researchers access the material at McMaster University Library’s William Ready Division of Archives and Research Collections? Findings The authors assert that the Pirate Group Inc. archive may be of particular interest to scholars engaged in research on the following topics: Canadian nationalism in marketing campaigns, the advertising history of companies whose histories are under-studied due to a lack of archival resources and the recent history of radio and television political ad campaigns. Originality/value The paper contributes to historical research in marketing by asserting that the Pirate Group Inc. archive has continuing value for further research. The Pirate archive, which allows for unprecedented access into the study of Canadian advertising due to its comprehensiveness and its uniqueness among archival collections from the contemporary era, makes it a strong primary source for marketing historians.

The Liturgical Singing Tradition of the Old Believers Priests of the Village of Koida (Based on the Materials of the Pushkin House Expedition in 1975 and 1976)

В 1975 и 1976 годах состоялись фольклорные экспедиции Института русской литературы в с.Койда Мезенского р-на Архангельской области, в ходе которых были записаны разнообразные в стилевом и историческом отношении духовные стихи, а также богослужебные песнопения. До настоящего времени коллекция звукозаписей, хранящаяся в Фонограммархиве ИРЛИ, не становилась предметом специального изучения. В ходе исследования удалось атрибутировать гимнографические тексты, выделить особенности распевов и духовных стихов, выявить их источники, частично реконструировать условия звукозаписи. На основе материалов более поздних фольклорно-археографических экспедиций ИРЛИ были восстановлены сведения о жизни старообрядческой общины, которая принадлежала к белокриницкому согласию. Коллекция богослужебных песнопений в музыкальном отношении разнообразна: она содержит пение «по напевке», «на глас», распевы письменной традиции, памятогласие. Внебогослужебная лирика представлена популярными духовными стихами позднего происхождения, за исключением эсхатологических стихов, распевы которых опираются на богослужебную традицию гласового пения. In 1975 and 1976, the Institute of Russian Literature (the Pushkin House) arranged expeditions to the village of Koida, Mezensky District, Arkhangelsk Region, during which spiritual verses and liturgical chants diverse in style and history were recorded. Until now, the collection of sound recordings (32 items) stored in the Phonogram Archive has not been a subject of special study. In the course of the research, it has become possible to attribute hymnographic texts, to highlight specifics of the chants and spiritual verses, to identify their sources, and partially reconstruct conditions of the sound recording. The materials of later folklore and archaeographic expeditions, provided the following information: facts about the life of the Old Believer’s community that belonged to the Belokrinitsky concord, the names of mentors, forms of mentoring and transmitting the singing tradition. The chants and spiritual verses were recorded from two significant performers — mentors Nadezhda Malygina and Nikandr Malygin. The collection of chants is diverse and contains oral and written versions of chants, mnemonic (pamyatoglasie). Non-liturgical music is represented by popular spiritual poetry of late origin, except for eschatological verses, the melody of which is similar to the chant.

THE URGENCY OF USING AUDIOBOOK IN GENERAL COURSE LEARNING

Audiobook is one of the alternative media that can provide material in the form of sound recordings made to attract concentration, facilitate learners, and provide a creative platform in learning. The lack of use of audiobooks in learning is one of the toughest challenges for teachers to achieve the existing learning objectives, especially in university. This study descriptively explored the urgency of using audiobooks in general course learning as a form of distance learning manifestation. A total of 294 respondents filled out the questionnaire by selecting the sample using purposive sampling. The results showed that most respondents thought that the use of audiobooks in learning was a positive breakthrough that could arouse their interest and interest in being active in learning. In addition, respondents also agreed that the use of this audiobook must be strengthened by various essential elements such as the material to be delivered, the chosen voice actor, and the duration of time that will be used. The purpose of the article is to study the features of the emergence and development of space rock as a specific trend in modern popular culture using the history of the “HAWKWIND” group as an example. The chronology of sound recordings of the “HAWKWIND” group as one of the founders of the “Space Rock Music” is established. The role of Dave Broсk, Bob Kalvert and other group participants in the creation of creative music programs is noted. It is proved that these musicians are the principles of the historical phenomenon, which received popularity as “Space Rock”. For the first time, the analysis of “HAWKWIND” sound documents through the prism of the history of space music development has been proposed.

OFFLINE FILING AND TRANSFER OF ELECTRONIC RECORDS AT ABC AGENCY

The use of electronic records increases in the industrial revolution 4.0 and the implementation of WFH (Work from Home). Records management needs to be carried out on all media and types of records. Electronic records management needs to be carried out on filing and transferring records to maintain the authenticity, integrity, security, and safety of records. ABC agency already uses the Records Information System (SRIKANDI), but not all types of records can be managed using that information system. The information system cannot manage electronic records of types of photos, videos, and sound recordings. The records must be managed at ABC agency, so it is necessary to determine the filing and transferring the records offline. This research is qualitative research using data collection techniques: observations, interviews, and documents search. Interviews were conducted with three experts in records management, both manual and electronic. The analysis is carried out based on the stages contained in the five regulatory documents. The analysis results show that the filing stages consist of preparation, inspection, index determination, file code determination, registration/input of records information, inserting records into folders, cross-pointing (if any), labelling, and compiling a list of current records. Moreover, the transfer stage consists of preparation, selection of records, arranging semi-current records, creating a list of semi-current records to be moved, and creating a report of records transfer.

Sound and Camera Recordings of a female Superb Lyrebird (Menura novaehollandiae) and its chick at the nest

ABSTRACT The nest of a Superb Lyrebird, in a spotted gum forest on the south-east coast of Australia, was monitored for approximately 10 weeks. The nest was discovered before the egg was laid, on June 16, 2020. The egg was laid on July 7, and the chick was taken by a Lace Monitor (Varanus varius) on August 29. A camera placed at the nest when discovered was active for the entire monitoring period. Thirteen sound recordings (in 6h periods) were made at the nest between July 16 and August 28 inclusive. The literature on vocalisations by the female lyrebird is scant, and in the light of our data, unrepresentative of her repertoire, especially during her role as parental carer. We present a series of photographs, sonograms and accessible sound recordings. These show specific behaviours of the female as she enters and leaves the nest, and the vocalisations specifically used when the female is approaching or leaving the nest, and when she is interacting with the egg, the chick and an intruder.

Preservation of audio-visual archives in Zambia

Audio-visual records and archives constitute a fundamental heritage that satisfies multiple needs, including education, training, research and entertainment. As such, there is a need to appropriately preserve and conserve them so they can be accessed for as long as they are needed. In spite of their significant role in safeguarding cultural heritage, audio-visual records and archives, are often neglected and accorded less attention than paper-based records, especially in developing countries. Hence, there is a risk of losing information held in audio-visual form. That is why this study looked at how the National Archives of Zambia (NAZ) and the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) preserve audio-visual materials to ensure long-term accessibility of the information. The study investigated the types of audio-visual collections held, the storage equipment used, measures put in place to ensure long-term accessibility of audio-visual materials, the disaster preparedness plans in place to safeguard audio-visual archives and the major challenges encountered in the preservation of audio-visual materials. The findings of the study revealed that films (microfilm and microfiche), photographs and manuscripts, and video (video tapes) and sound recordings (compact cassette) constitute the biggest audio-visual collection preserved. The equipment used to store audio-visual materials included open shelves, specialised cabinets, electronic database for digitised materials, aisle mobiles and cupboards. The measures taken to ensure the long-term accessibility of audio-visual collection included digitisation and migration of endangered records and archives; fumigation of storage areas; conservation of damaged materials and regulation of temperatures and humidity in the storage areas. The disaster preparedness plans in place mostly covered structure insurance; protection against fire and water by way of installing fire extinguishers; smoke sensors; fire detectors and construction of purpose-built structures. The major challenges faced were financial constraints; technological obsolescence; lack of playback equipment; limited training; lack of strong back-up systems and inadequate storage facilities.
