AbstractDealing with student errors is a central feature of instructional quality. Teachers’ reactions to a student’s error and classmates’ errors can be crucial to the success of a lesson. A teacher should respond appropriately in terms of motivational and learning-related issues so that the error can become a learning opportunity for students. Currently, error situations have rarely been directly recorded and explored in empirical zstudies. This gap is the central focus of the current study in which we investigated errors in biology instruction within a cross-sectional design where biology lessons in German secondary schools were videotaped, teachers’ dealings with errors analyzed, and student achievement documented with pretests and posttests. The study found that constructively dealing with student errors had a significant positive effect on student achievement at the class level. Results confirmed the relevance of teachers’ appropriate dealing with student errors on learning in biology instruction.

The Malaysian Education Blueprint (MEB) 2013-2025 emphasized on principals’ supervisory practices and teachers’ quality to enhance 21st-century international quality education. The lack of professional training for principals and the decline of teacher’s quality according to Yayasan Islam Kelantan (YIK) report (YIK, 2017) have affected the government’s aspirations. This problem requires a solution because the instructional supervision is a catalyst of teachers’ professional values and quality. Meanwhile, teachers’ quality is related to teaching professionalism practices, knowledge, understanding as well as teaching and learning skills. This study is essential for principals’ instructional supervision improvement and enhancing teachers’ quality. A quantitative, cross-sectional survey approach was adopted using a standardized three-section questionnaire comprising Section A: Respondents’ Personal and Professional Backgrounds, Section B: Instructional Supervision and Section C: Teachers’ Quality. The study sample comprised 360 teachers in YIK Religious Secondary Schools. A descriptive and inferential data analysis was generated using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 20 Version. The improved quality among teachers was the result of holistic supervisory practices of principals namely, directive guidance, collective development, professional development, curriculum development and action research guidance. Thus, it is significant that principals understand the practical dimensions of supervision in order to improve teachers’ quality in YIK Religious Secondary Schools in Kelantan. It is recommended that YIK focuses on instructional supervision practices to produce quality teachers as the principals’ instructional supervision is highly potential catalysts for quality teachers.

In an effort to promote school improvement, principals have primarily focused on developing quality teachers as a method of enhancing the academic achievement of students. This article seeks to shed light on the experiences and per-ceptions of urban principals regarding teacher effectiveness. Specifically, this article focuses on principals’ outlooks on teachers’ in three areas: student achievement, hiring and retention, and school culture. Empirical data from this study was derived from a mixed-method cross sectional survey administered to urban school principals in Arizona and California. It was evident in this study that principals perceive teachers as either well qualified or very well qualified to educate urban students. These findings are incongruent with the greater literature on this topic which illustrates the quality of urban school teachers is in question in comparison to non-urban teachers. The implications of principals’ overwhelmingly positive outlook are discussed coupled with recommendations for future research.

Abstract This study investigated challenges, counselling needs and coping strategies of students with visual impairment in regular secondary schools in Nigeria. The descriptive survey of cross-sectional design was employed for the study. Five hundred and twenty-seven students with visual impairment in regular secondary schools were included in the survey by using purposive and captive sampling techniques. The findings of the study revealed that the challenges of students with visual impairment in regular secondary schools include inability to access modern technologies, ( $\overline {\rm{X}} $ = 3.73), inappropriate teaching methods ( $\overline {\rm{X}} $ = 3.64), non availability of special curriculum ( $\overline {\rm{X}} $ = 3.57). It is therefore recommended that teachers and school authorities should ensure that students with visual impairment are taught to develop effective study habits and techniques of self-activity.

This study examined the effects of microcredit provided by Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM) on the performance of microenterprises by the participants in Malaysia. This study adopted a cross-sectional design and the quantitative data were collected from a total of 387 borrowers of AIM. The findings revealed significantly positive correlations between microenterprises performances and economic loan, number of training programs, as well as hours of training programs. The multiple regression analysis further confirmed the positive and statistically significant effects of economic loan and number of training programs on the performance of microenterprises by the participants of AIM in Malaysia. However, the length of participation shows a negative effect on microenterprise performance. These findings highlighted the positive effect of microcredit on microenterprises performance such as access to credit, microenterprises' development training programs, and negative effects on the psychological aspect of the entrepreneurs by the microcredit availability and long-term credit. The government and development organisations in Malaysia should focus on designing fixable and diversified credit schemes with a watchful eye on the duration of the loan and training programs for the microenterprises in Malaysia.
