Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the use of sustainability as strategic cornerstone for a marketing channel in a mature market, particularly in the hog industry in the Canadian Province of Quebec. Due to the growing attention to sustainability, and the international trend toward agricultural trades and stakeholder involvement in food, there is a need for a system-based approach in the field of food systems sustainability. Design/methodology/approach – In total, 12 semi-structured individual interviews were conducted among marketing managers working for different organizations within the Quebec hog marketing channel. The organizations chosen vary depending on the size, level of integration and involvement in the industry, to create a sample that adequately represents the industry. For the purpose of this research, three primary producers, one veterinarian, three licenced abattoirs, one food processor, one distributor, one independent retailer and two types of food service facility, one from a franchise system and the other from a high-end restaurant were questioned regarding the current state of the industry, as well as the impact of sustainable development on their strategic plans. Findings – The Canadian hog and pork industry is currently facing strong competition from several fronts: the USA and South America, a population with increasingly sophisticated demands, a strong Canadian dollar and a significant increase in input costs, particularly in respect to oil and corn. To be able to meet this competition, and in order to prosper in an uncertain marketplace, marketing channel believes that it must reduce its production costs, increase product awareness in the domestic market and promote cooperation among industry members. Research limitations/implications – This research is mainly concerned with the Quebec hog industry. External validity has not been achieved with the current research. In addition, a lack of distributor availability to answer the interview questions limits researchers’ capacity to extrapolate results to all retailers. Meetings with other food distributors would be required to verify the accuracy of results. Although this study is exploratory in nature, several appealing research avenues emerge. First, the research focusses primarily on members of the distribution network, but does not consider the consumers’ point of view. It would be fruitful to study the impact of sustainable development on the perceived product quality by measuring consumers’ intent to purchase. Practical implications – The principal point of interest that makes this case worthy of study and of potential application to future business modeling is how sustainability and sustainable development is perceived throughout various marketing channels. The Quebec hog industry faces strong competition from several countries that are able to offer a similar product at a lower cost. The mature market consists of a limited number of producers interested in offering a product on the market at the lowest possible price. Social implications – When it comes to sustainable development and the hog industry, the economic and environmental aspects seem to be well understood by members of the industry. On the other hand, the social aspect of sustainability is not mentioned frequently and is often not a part of the leaders’ main concerns. Nevertheless, members of the industry agree that sustainable development affects the Quebec hog value chain, and will remain a topic of interest in the coming years. Originality/value – To the knowledge, no study has been conducted to evaluate the use of sustainability as strategic cornerstone for a marketing channel in a mature market, particularly in the hog industry. Many studies have been conducted in a context of emerging markers. However, very few studies addressed the issue in an established economic environment.

The article aims to analyse livestock production factors and search for reserves to increase efficiency in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The main tasks of Ukraine in the framework of achieving the SDGs and the role of livestock in this process are identified. The world experience of sustainable livestock development has proved its contribution to overcoming world hunger. The main trends in livestock production development in agricultural enterprises of Ukraine are identified. The influence of livestock intensification on the economic and social efficiency of livestock production is determined. Ways to increase the efficiency of livestock production through innovation are substantiated. The system of factors of production efficiency is expanded, taking into account its social aspects; in particular, it is shown that the development of livestock has a significant impact on the internal social efficiency of enterprises, affecting labour demand and wages. The strengthening of specialization and concentration in livestock in Ukraine is following the same global trends. The influence of livestock intensification on the formation of the ratio "costs - production results" is proved, which made it possible to identify the possibility of increasing profitability while rising production costs per head of livestock. Increasing the production intensity can lead to increased technological, economic, and social efficiency.

This study aimed to unravel the factors that may be contributing to the declining aquaculture output in Kenya. The project obtained data using a semi-structured questionnaire, expert interviews and observations in Bomet, Kericho and Nakuru counties of Kenya. Eighteen farms, rearing Nile tilapia by semi-intensive method, with fifteen using on-farm formulated feeds, were purposively selected. Three of them, one per County, and all using commercial feed, served as the control. The study investigated on-farm feed formulation practices, ingredient and feed storage methods, production costs and training service provision. Nakuru County recorded the highest cost per gram of protein, while Bomet County recorded the lowest unit cost (p<0.05). Fifty five percent of farmers used the Pearson Square Method for fish feed formulation, with most of them being from Nakuru County and the least coming from Kericho County. Sixty percent of participating farmers were appropriately trained. The study recommends that the State Department of Fisheries and Blue Economy and Counties make aquaculture a major operational and results area. Additionally, credit to farmers and subsidy of cost of inputs should be provided alongside appropriate extension services.

Topicality. The relevance of the issues of introduction of innovative management technologies into food industry enterprises of Ukraine, in particular in the bakery, facilitation of their sustainable development under conditions of economic instability creates new opportunities for enterprises to attract investment and for formation of a sustainable food security system of Ukraine. Aim and tasks. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the introduction of innovative technologies of bakery enterprises management in the context of the increasing economic crisis in society based on the world experience and forecast of trends in the market of bread and bakery products in Ukraine. Research results. The article deals with the issues of strategic management of bakery enterprises of Ukraine under conditions of transformation on the basis of the introduction of technologies of "frozen" bread for therapeutic and preventive purposes. This corresponds to the strategy of sustainable development "Ukraine-2020", has huge socio-economic consequences and leads to the formation of a positive image of Ukrainian producers and strengthening of investment potential. Now, in order to survive in the market, enterprises need to have a long-term development strategy based on the introduction of innovations and attracting investment through the use of innovative management technologies. The article analyses the state and the main trends of the market of bread and bakery products of Ukraine, foreign experience of introduction of technologies of frozen bread production and prospects of its dissemination in Ukraine. The analysis of the problems hindering the intensive development of baking, and the factors that contribute to the growth of the market of "frozen" products in Ukraine allowed to formulate the current tasks of the development of the baking industry and building its position as a competitive industry. The study is based on the results of management of project on implementation of the frozen bakery products of therapeutic and preventive purposes into the perspective plan of development of the largest bakery enterprise of Odessa. The formula of the products has been developed by the scientists of the Odessa national Academy of food technologies to meet the needs of the residents of Odessa city, nearby suburbs and the resort zone for the new types of bakery products that are in high demand. The calculations show the competitive price of new products, increase in the capacity utilization through the manufacture of new products, the growth of the total profit of the enterprise, reduction in production costs and return on investment in a cost-effective period. This confirms the economic efficiency and expediency of introducing innovative technologies at large bakery enterprises in the form of a variety of bakery products with "deferred" terms of baking for therapeutic and preventive purposes. Aquafeed accounts for at least 75–90% of aquaculture’s operating costs. Traditional aquafeed ingredients such as fishmeal, fish oil, and soybean meal are unsustainable; further, their increasing cost necessities developing alternative feed ingredients. Microalgae-based aquafeed is not only environmentally friendly, but it can also be cost-effective with proper optimization. In addition, the nutrition profile of microalgae is similar to that of many fishes. The digestibility of a feed is one of the most important factors to consider in feed formulation. A highly digestible feed can lower production costs, reduce feed waste, and reduce the risk of eutrophication. This review discusses the digestibility of various nutrients such as protein, lipid, carbohydrate, amino acids, and fatty acids (including omega-3 fatty acids), dry matter, and energy of various microalgae in fish. Other commonly used aquafeed ingredients were also compared to microalgae in terms of nutrient and energy digestibility in fish. The intrinsic characteristics of microalgae, biomass pretreatment, and feed preparation methods are all discussed as factors that contribute to the nutrient and energy digestibility of microalgae in fish. Furthermore, methods for increasing the digestibility of microalgal biomass in fish are suggested. Finally, the review concludes with the challenges and prospects of using microalgae as a fish feed in terms of digestibility.
