Effects of sex, age and body weight on selected organs of indigenous Nigerian pigs: liver, kidney, heart, lung-and-trachea

SummaryThe absolute and relative growth of the liver, kidney, heart and lung-and-trachea were studied for 64 female, 64 castrated male and 64 intact male indigenous Nigerian pigs between birth and 672 days of age. Highly significant (P < 0·001) sex and age influences were obtained for the absolute and relative weights of the liver, kidney and heart. At 280 days of age, the four organs on average weighed 28 times their birth values; the terminal weights averaged 1·31 times their values at 280 days. Organ growth became stabilized after 280 days.The allometric equation: Y = aXb, transformed to its linear form log Y = log a + b log X, was employed to examine the relationship between organ weight and body weight. The growth coefficients 6 obtained ranged from 0·787 for kidney to 0·850 for lung-and-trachea and were similar to values reported in the literature. The accompanying highly significant R2 values strongly indicate that the functions of these organs are related to overall metabolism, which in turn is strongly dependent on body size.

SUMMARYA study was made of the effect on body composition of growing Angus steers from 300 to 440 kg at three different rates. The rates were: High (H) 0·8 kg/day, Low (L) 0·4 kg/day and High-Maintenance (HM) 0·8 kg/day followed by a period during which body weight was maintained constant.The animals were individually penned and the different growth rates were achieved by controlling intakes of a pelleted feed. Two animals (part of H treatment) were killed at 300 kg and the remaining 27 animals (nine in each treatment), were killed at common body weights of 330, 363, 400 and 440 kg.Analyses of covariance were used to compare linear regression equations representing results from each treatment. In order to do this, the logarithmic transformation of the allometric equation, y = axb, was used. As a proportion of empty body weight (EBW), hot carcass weight (HCW) was greater in both the HM and L groups than in the H group, indicating a greater offal component of EBW in the H animals. The loss in weight of the dressed carcass during storage at 2 °C for 24 h was similar in all three groups and was 0·98% of HCW. The proportions of HCW in the fore- and hind-quarters were similar in each group.At the same dissected side weight (DSW), the weight of bone was significantly greater in both the HM and L groups than in the H group indicating that bone development was related to both age and carcass weight. There were no significant differences between the groups in the proportions of either muscle or total fat. However, the proportion of kidney and channel fat in the H group was greater than in the HM and L groups and the proportion of subcutaneous fat was also greater in the H than in the L group. The amount of connective tissue in the three groups followed, in general, group differences in bone. Analyses of the dissected components of the separate fore- and hind-quarters showed that the difference between the H and L groups in the proportion of subcutaneous fat in the DSW was due to a relatively greater development of this fat in the fore-quarter of the H animals.No differences were found between treatments in the proportion of ‘expensive muscles’ relative to total side muscle (TSM). However, there were treatment effects on the proportions of TSM formed by certain groups of muscles; two examples are: the proportion of group 4 muscles (abdominal muscles) was higher and the proportion of group 6 muscles (distal muscles of the fore-leg) was lower in the H than in the L treatments. Bone weight distribution was similar in all treatments.There were differences between the H and HM groups in the relative growth ratios for all fat tissues (subcutaneous, intermuscular and kidney and channel fat) compared with total side fat. However, in the H and L groups, the relative growth ratios for corresponding fat categories were similar. The weight of kidney and channel fat in the left side of the carcass was significantly greater than in the right side of the carcass in all treatments.

Nineteen young and eighteen mature lean Holstein cows were purchased from a commercial source and fed a high energy diet ad libitum based on high moisture corn and haylage. Six young and six mature cows were slaughtered at the start of the trial to give an estimate of the initial weight of the offal components. After 68 days on feed, two young cows and two mature cows were slaughtered on a weekly basis until the conclusion of the trial. The offal components were weighed fresh and the alimentary components emptied of digesta. The growth pattern of each offal component relative to empty body weight was estimated from the allometric equation (Y = aXb). Growth coefficients were homogeneous between young and mature cows, indicating that cow age did not influence the relative growth of offal. The internal organs concerned with vital body functions tended to be related to empty body weight to the power of 0.67, which is proportional to the basal metabolic rate. The internal fat depots, however, all had growth coefficients in excess of one. At a constant empty body weight young cows had heavier hides (P < 0.5) and tended to have less hot carcass weight (5.4 kg) than mature cows.

Recently, hunting has represented a major source of mortality in game animals, including red fox, Vulpes vulpes, populations. Data from hunting studies have been used to explain evolutionary changes (body size, dental structure) in fox populations; however, knowledge of potential sources of bias in these kinds of data is lacking. Moreover, nature and game managers as well as conservationists have recently been seeking methods to limit European fox populations, which are increasing. In the present study in Polish farmland, we show that three different hunting methods (individual – lying in wait, with dogs at dens, with beating undergrowth to flush out foxes) resulted in differences in the age, sex ratio and body size of shot foxes. Taking account of seasonal differences in hunting methods used, shooting assisted by beating gave a higher proportion of male foxes, whereas individual hunting resulted in smaller foxes in shot samples. Hunting with dogs resulted in heavier female foxes, with the results being skewed towards females. Thus, this method may help limit the breeding capacity of a population and is recommended to assist in the control of red fox populations, at least in farmland areas.

This study aimed to determine the Correlation and the regression equation between body measurements and body weight of Brahman Cross (BX) Cow in KPT Maju Sejahtera Trimulyo village, Tanjung Bintang District, Lampung Selatan Regency. This research was conducted in July 2020. The data obtained were analyzed using simple and multiple regression analysis using the help of the Excel program. The material used in this study were 32 Brahman Cross (BX) Cow aged 2-3 years. The results of this study indicated that the average of Body Weight (BW), Chest Circumference (CC), Body Length (BL), and Shoulder height (SH) were 472.66 � 53.59 kg, 179.95 � 7, 95 cm, 132.49 � 6.39 cm, 127.95 � 3.08 cm, respectively. The correlation value between CC, BL, SH with BB were 0.764, 0.448, and 0.551, respectively. These results indicated that CC, BL, SH, have a positive relationship with BW. The regression equation resulting from the relationship between body weight and body size CC, BL, SH to BW with the value of determination (R2) and significance (P?0.05) was 0.607 (60.7%) with the regression equation BW = -674.003 + 4.314 CC + 1.247 BL + 1.602 SH. AbstrakCacing Nipah Pendek Namalycastis abiuma memiliki tubuh yang elastis dan mudah putus sehingga diperlukan pendekatan morfometri tubuh lain untuk menentukan panjang tubuh sesungguhnya. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk menentukan panjang tubuh total cacing nipah pendek dengan menggunakan bobot tubuh, jumlah total segmen berseta, panjang tiga segmen anterior pertama (L3) dan lebar segmen berseta atau setiger ke-10 (S-10). Spesimen yang digunakan dipilih hanya individu yang lengkap dan utuh. Pengukuran dilakukan dibawah mikroskop dengan lensa okular yang dilengkapi dengan mikrometer. Data dianalisis dengan analisis korelasi. Cacing yang digunakan sebanyak 258 individu yang terdiri atas 190 immature, 54 submature dan 14 mature dengan ukuran panjang tubuh rata-rata berturut-turut 108,62±34,80 mm, 172,27±42,78 mm dan 123,14±57,40 mm. Cacing betina ditemukan memiliki ukuran tubuh lebih besar dari jantan. Panjang tubuh N. abiuma dapat diduga dengan bobot tubuh, panjang L3 dan lebar S-10 dengan nilai koefisien korelasi (r) berturut-turut 0,82, 0,73 dan 0,78. Pendekatan morfometri dapat digunakan untuk menentukan ukuran tubuh N. abiuma.Abstract The short nypa palm worm Namalycastis abiuma has an elastic and fragile body. Therefore, an alternative approach of morphometrical techniques is needed to determine the total body length. This research aimed to estimate the total body length of the short nypa palm worm based on body weight, the total number of segments, the length of the first three anterior segment (L3) and the tenth setiger width (S10). Body measurement was done using stereomicroscope fitted with the micrometer. Correlation analysis was done to describe the relationship between the length of L3 and the width of S10. A total of 258 complete and whole specimens consisted of 190 immature, 54 submature, and 14 mature individuals. The average body length of immature individuals was 108.62±34.80 mm, 172.27±42.78 mm for sub mature individuals, and 123.14±57.40 mm for mature individuals. Based on sexual dimorphism, the female body size is larger than male. The body length of N. abiuma can be estimated by body weight, the length of L3, and the  width of S10, with  correlation coefficient (r) of 0.82, 0.73 and 0.78, respectively. Morphometry approach can be used to determine the body size of N. abiuma.

AbstractVisceral organs play an important role in animals' energy requirements, so their growth must be well understood. The objective of the current study was to fit and compare growth curves that best describe body and visceral organ growth over time in Saanen goats of different sexes. Data were synthesized from seven studies in which curves were fitted to visceral organ growth over time for female, intact male and castrated male Saanen goats from 5 to 45 kg body weight. The liver, pancreas, spleen, rumen–reticulum, omasum, abomasum, small intestine, large intestine and mesenteric adipose tissue (MAT) data were fitted to eight models: simple linear regression, quadratic, monomolecular, Brody, Von Bertalanffy, logistic, Gompertz and Richards. The best-fit model was chosen based on the corrected Akaike information criterion and the concordance correlation coefficient. Model parameters for each sex were compared. Overall, the model that best described visceral organ growth was the logistic model. Sex did not influence the parameters that predicted organ growth (g), except for MAT, where females presented a lower tissue deposition rate and greater inflection point than males. Irrespective of sex, at the beginning of the growth curve, the liver accounted for 28 ± 1.1 g/kg of empty body weight, and the inflection point occurred at 1.7 months. The rumen–reticulum and large intestine presented higher growth rates in the first 2 months of life. Knowledge of the visceral organ growth curve is useful in improving the understanding of the effect of nutritional requirements for goats and must be used to optimize the nutritional plans.

SummaryThe left half carcasses of 64 female, 64 castrated male and 64 intact male indigenous Nigerian pigs were dissected in order to study the bone growth between birth and 672 days of age. Total bone weight as well as the weights and lengths of femur, tibia–fibula, humerus and radius–ulna were studied at 16 ages. While bone weights increased between 34 and 45 times from birth to the terminal age range, bone lengths on the average only quadrupled within the same period. Maximum growth in bone weight occurred at 112 days of age whereas bone length attained maximum growth rate at 56 days of age when the body weights had averaged 15·8 and 6·2 kg respectively.Beyond these body weights, the growth rates declined. Although sex differences for total bone weight were not significant, the individual long bones studied exhibited significant sex differences. Highly significant age and sex influences were obtained for the relative bone weights.The growth coefficients b determined for the individual bones and total bone using the logarithmically transformed allometric equation Y = oXb, ranged from an average of 0·76 for radius–ulna to O·80 for femur. Pooled values for total carcass bone was 0·84. The values agreed with those reported in literature with side weight as independent variable, and confirm bone to be early developing. Bone lengths were related more to body weight than to chronological age as judged by the R2 values. In all the bone traits studied, intact male pigs showed larger values than the castrated male and female pigs.

Abstract This study aimed to determine the quantitative characteristics, the determinant of body size and shape, and the correlation of body measurements and the bodyweight of Bali and Simbal cattle in Renah Pamenang, Merangin District. The survey method was used along with purposive sampling, the samples were Bali and Simbal cattle aged I1 (Incicivus 1) and not in pregnant condition, with 60 cattle consisting of 30 males and 30 females. Observed data included: body weight, body weight gain, body length, shoulder height, chest circumference, chest weight, chest width, hip height, and canon circumference were analyzed using the t-test method. The principal component analysis was used to determine the determinant of size and shape of Bali and Simbal cattle followed by the regression and correlation analysis to determine the relationship and closeness of the relationship between body measurements with body weight. The result showed that the body weight, body weight gain, and body size of Bali cattle were significantly different (P <0.05) from Simbal. The body weight, body weight gain, and body size of Bali cattle were lower than Simbal cattle. The main characteristic of size in Bali and Simbal cattle was the Chest Circumference. The dominant characteristic of shape in Bali and Simbal cattle was shoulder height. The highest correlation between body measurements and body weight in Bali and Simbal cattle was the chest circumference. Metode yang digunakan adalah survey dengan pengambilan sampel secara purposive sampling, yaitu sapi Bali dan Simbal, umur I1 (Incicivus 1),  dan tidak dalam keadaan bunting sebanyak 60 sampel yang terdiri dari 30 ekor jantan dan 30 ekor betina pada masing-masing bangsa. Data yang dihimpun meliputi : bobot badan, pertambahan bobot badan, panjang badan, tinggi pundak, lingkar dada, dalam  dada, lebar dada, tinggi pinggul dan lingkar kanon dianalisis menggunakan uji-t. Analisis komponen utama digunakan untuk mengetahui penciri ukuran dan bentuk tubuh sapi Bali dan Simbal kemudian dilanjutkan analisis regresi dan korelasi untuk mengetahui hubungan dan keeratan hubungan antara ukuran-ukuran tubuh dengan bobot badan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa bobot badan, pertambahan bobot badan dan ukuran-ukuran tubuh sapi Bali berbeda nyata (P<0,05) dengan Simbal. Bobot badan, pertambahan bobot badan dan ukuran-ukuran tubuh sapi Bali lebih rendah dibandingkan Simbal. Penciri ukuran pada sapi Bali dan Simbal adalah lingkar dada. penciri bentuk pada sapi Bali dan Simbal adalah tinggi pundak. <p>The authors have investigated the effect of different levels guanidinoacetic acid in the diets of quails on their productivity and carcass quality. Experimental studies were carried out in the conditions of the problematic research laboratory of feed additives in the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine. Material for scientific and economic experience was quail of Pharaoh species of meat direction of productivity. The experiment was carried out by method of groups-analogues. Compound feed were fed in dry crumbled form. Young animals were fed in a group. The daily amount of compound feed was divided in two parts – morning and evening rations. The effect of using different levels of Guanidinoacetic Acid (GAA) in compound feed on productivity and carcass quality of young quails was studied. We have found that compound feed with the level of GАА 0.06% contributes to live body weight increase by 3.9 g and muscles of the pelvic limbs yield by 26.2%. At the same time, use of diets with a level of 0.12% of guanidine acetate increases live weight by 13.5 g, the absolute growth of 6.5 g, average daily growth by 0.9 g, a relative growth of 2%, the mass of carcass, semi-eviscerated carcass, and eviscerated carcass of 4.8, 4.9 and 4.3% correspondingly, slightly increases the mass of pectoral muscles by 9.1%, significantly increases the yield of muscles of the pelvic limbs by 36.4%, and reduces feed conversion by 5%. Poultry which was fed with 0.18% of GАА exceeded control of body weight by 12.2 g, the absolute growth by 4.4 g, average daily growth by 0.6 g, the relative growth by 1.1%, yield of muscles of the pelvic limbs by 36.4% and  had a lower feed conversion rate by 9.1%. During the study period the safety of livestock which was fed with GААvwas high and ranged from 90 to 96%.  It was established the perspective of further research, which is to examine the impact of Guanidinoacetic Acid on the egg production of egg-laying quails, morphological and chemical composition of eggs and  their hatching  quality.</p>
