The paper deals with the digital transformation of engineering education. Such transformation is justified in terms of an engineering education paradigm change. Based on a comprehensive analysis of the didactic system of engineering education, the authors specify the requirements for such important engineering education components as goal setting, content, educational technologies, assessment tools and methods in current educational environment. They provides examples of a practical digital transformation of a number of engineering curricula and syllabi by integrating blended learning based on a Small Private Online Course (SPOC). The authors share their best practices in designing e-learning taking into account the features of the learning-forgetting process, they demonstrate how to make use of the saved time for students’ practical work, how to implement gamification techniques based on such new forms as the Hackathon, Internet of things (IoT) for engineering education. They also provide examples of creating a digital educational environment with specialized software modules to visualize complex mathematical concepts as well as examples of applying principles of artificial intelligence and machine learning to shape a student’s adapted educational trajectory. They discuss how to identify student’s problems with learning material assimilation and suggest a specially developed course including propaedeutic unit for additional study.

Digital, virtual and E-learning elements have increasingly become a part in higher education and, most recently, the high potential of digitalization for processes of strategic internationalization of higher education institutions is coming into focus. The collaborative project of three German universities, XYZ, is working on strategies for the internationalization and virtualization of engineering education. While these topics used to be different key areas of the project, a combination of both distinguished itself as a potential new working field. This paper introduces two pilot concepts that were implemented and evaluated at the universities Y and Z which both aim at the complementation of incoming students’ experiences in Germany by digital means. At Y, a transnational online class explores means of preparing degree-mobile engineering students from all over the world for their master’s studies in Germany. At Z, an online course was designed to accompany a summer school research exchange for US-American engineering students in order to prolong their short-term mobility by digital elements. These pilot projects were well-accepted by students and faculty at both universities and their evaluations between 2014 and 2017 have revealed valuable results for further optimization. This paper presents the results and discusses future potential.

Statement of the problem. In the process of systemic developments in engineering education, the role of a technical university teacher increases. Changes in the requirements imposed by international and Russian communities to the quality of engineering education in the context of digital transformation of the economy and higher education mainstream the problem of continuous professional development of an engineering university teacher. Currently, a teacher of professional education should acquire new methods and digital tools, develop new competencies among students, i.e. “skills of the 21st century” and digital literacy. Training engineering personnel pressure the need for a professional education teacher to learn new pedagogical technologies and digital tools directly in the context of their professional activities. The pedagogical, technological and organizational conditions of such integration have not yet been sufficiently studied in educational practice and pedagogical science. The purpose of the article is to present the author’s approaches to and developments of modeling programs and digital educational environment for pedagogical training of a Master’s degree student in engineering education in the context of modern pedagogical technologies aimed at developing skills of the 21st century. The research methodology and methods are based on a transprofessional approach to the system of professional education; on the analysis of international and Russian studies to identify the structure of basic skills of the 21st century, the means and methods of their formation in Master’s education. Research results. The interrelations are grounded and expanded of the 21st century skills and universal competencies acquired by a graduate of higher professional education at the level of a Master’s degree in Engineering. The basic principles of designing the digital educational environment as a condition for integrating pedagogical and engineering training are revealed. The authors’ programs have been developed for the system of specialized courses in Master’s engineering training aimed at learning the technologies of soft skills formation and ways of their implementation in traditional training sessions. An open information resource (an online course) “Pedagogical Soft-Skills Navigator” has been developed to guide teachers and undergraduates through the soft skills formation technologies. Conclusion. Implementation of the developed programs in the digital educational environment of an open online course makes it possible to acquire the technologies of soft skills formation in personalized learning models, aimed at the needs of professional teaching and the focus of a Master’s program. The developed materials can be used in professional development programs for teachers of professional higher education.

Currently, in the context of the widespread use of e-learning technologies and distance educational technologies, it is necessary to train future teachers, taking into account the peculiarities of solving professional problems in an electronic information and educational environment, to develop students' relevant competencies, including network communicative competence. Despite the large number of studies devoted to the communicative aspect of the teacher's activities, the problem of the formation of network communicative competence in the electronic information and educational environment has not been sufficiently studied. Based on the analysis of scientific literature, the results of the questionnaire survey of students, some methods of forming network communicative competence in future teachers in the study of various disciplines, in the course of teaching practice, and scientific research are proposed. The analysis of the conditions and factors that determine the choice of methods for the formation of the specified competence has been carried out. These factors are associated with the teachers' perception of the peculiarities of communication in the electronic information and educational environment, the didactic and communicative potential of resources and tools of the electronic information and educational environment, the choice of methods and technologies for organizing interaction, the selection of educational material that allows the development of components of network communicative competence, the design of tasks and exercises for the development of network communicative competence, the choice of modes, schemes and forms of organization of interaction, the organization of feedback, control of the level of formation of the network communicative competence, the implementation of reflection. The formed network communicative competence will contribute to a more effective solution by the teacher of communicative tasks in the electronic information and educational environment, which will improve the quality of training of future teachers in the electronic information and educational environment.

The use of digital technologies such as Internet of Things and advanced data analytics are central in digitally transforming manufacturing companies towards Industry 4.0. Success cases are frequently reported, and there is clear evidence of technology interventions conducted by industry. However, measuring the impact and effect of such interventions on digital maturity and on the organizational adoption can be challenging. Therefore, the research aim of this paper is to explore how the combination of the different methods of Industrial Internet Playground (IIP) pilots, Shadow Infrastructure (SI) and digital maturity assessment can assist in conducting and documenting the technical, as well as organisational, impact of digital interventions. Through an elaborate literature review of existing digital maturity assessment tools and key dimensions in digital transformation, we have developed a digital maturity assessment tool (DMAT), which is presented and applied in the paper to identify digital development areas and to evaluate and document the effects of digital interventions. Thus, the paper contributes with new knowledge of how the IIP pilot and SI combined with digital maturity assessment can support effective, transparent and documented digital transformation throughout an organisation, as explored through theory and a practice case.

Evolving digital technologies are infiltrating schools wave after wave. The changes taking place are viewed as the schools’ digital renewal process (SDRP). The SDRP is complex (multidimensional). It includes changes in the educational environment (physical and virtual), the educational process, and the way the school operates. The SDRP goes uneven, with individual schools at different stages. One-time observation of the SDRP allows you to fix its current state (statics). The longitudinal observations allows you to see changes in the schools’ digital renewal (kinematics). The connection of the observed changes with the impact on the general education system makes it possible to discuss the development of digital renewal under the influence of individual control actions (dynamics). The stages of penetration of digital technologies into the work of the school: computerization, early and mature informatization, digital transformation (transition to the “Smart School”) can be considered as the stages of maturity of the SDRP. The article discusses a framework for describing the processes of digital renewal of schools in an evolving digital environment and an assessment of the SDRP’s maturity.
