The majority of museum experts have agreed that museums are informal learning environments, however, most of the previous studies on digital learning have focused on formal education institutions instead of informal environments. Hence, adapting the new fast-changing technology in museum learning has become one of the major challenges for the digital native and digital immigrant populations due to their different learning styles. These two generations have different levels of thinking patterns, experiences, and digital exposure that lead to different levels of technology accessibility in the learning environment. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the preferred learning styles of museum visitors in the Malaysian context based on the learning styles of digital natives and digital immigrants. A total of 265 respondents participated in this study representing the population of N=792 at the Malaysian music museum in the data collection process. These descriptive results on the cross-tabulation analysis from the survey indicated that most of the visitors preferred the digital natives’ learning styles compared to the digital immigrants’, regardless of personal factors (gender, age, nationality, education level, or occupation). Thus, museum institutions should take the necessary steps to enhance or maintain the learning approach for digital natives with elements of entertainment and fun, provide internet connection, less text, out of school environment, digital use, and multi-task activities for skills enhancement. The minority of digital immigrants are suggested to assimilate and become part of the digital native group to stay relevant in this digital era. The fourth industrial revolution has created a great boost in the development of technology, prompting countries to seek intelligent management solutions in all fields. This also brings opportunities and challenges in attracting and using high-quality human resources for organizations and countries in current global competition. According to Klaus Schwab, who introduced the term Fourth Industrial Revolution, talent, rather than capital, will represent the factor of production. This is both an opportunity and a challenge for organizations and countries in the competition for high-quality scientific and technological human resources. Universities are also on this trend. The article will analyze the need to apply the rule of social mobility in policy identification to attract high-quality science and technology human resources to universities. These research contents initially contribute to providing the arguments for the process of making policies to attract talents or high-quality scientific and technological human resources in universities in the context of the fourth industrial revolution. The widespread use of digital technologies by digital natives has put a considerable amount of pressure on their educators, who are mostly digital immigrants, to recognize the relevance of digital connectivity, learn new ways of thinking and processing information of the digital natives, and integrate it into their teaching environments. The current study looks into these aspects while discussing the technology usage and practice of digital immigrant educators in higher education. A survey was conducted with a structured questionnaire on the technology usage and teaching strategies implemented by the digital immigrant educators to teach digital natives in higher education. The findings reported that digital immigrant educators must be accustomed to the a) diverse needs of digital native students and b) use and applications of digital technologies in order to create and practice interactive and collaborative teaching environments.

Higher education is one of the great successes of the twenty-first century. Once the province of an elite few, a university degree is now commonplace as the industrial revolution transforms into the digital age. However, the process of teaching has not changed much since Aristotle taught at the Lyceum: students still meet their teachers to listen and ponder their words of wisdom. This process has become less desirable for some students who now learn entirely online, or those who cannot reconcile the cost of a degree with its overall employment benefits. Dystopian theories have criticized current online educational practice as leading to inadequate reading, poor recall and confused cognition. But technology is seen by others as a panacea for rising costs, massive class sizes and fully engaging digital native students. Universities and colleges need to make some mindful decisions to curtail decreasing interest, less funding and disruptive competition. Is technology a saviour or an impediment in this process?

The authors critique the commonly accepted notions of "digital native" students and the widening generation gap between them and "technophobic" faculty. Their case studies, from UK higher education, demonstrate that attempts to introduce new models of learning are inhibited by 1) prevailing structure and culture within universities and 2) expectations (or even a stated preference) for traditional delivery and assessment of knowledge by the students themselves. The authors recommend a strategy for more systemic integration of social technologies and new learning styles into the curriculum to help ensure that universities remain relevant and add value to learners and employers in the digital age. Keywords: digital native; technophobic; higher education; social technologies; learning styles
