Regarding the aging population, the question of care and financial support of the elderly becomes increasingly relevant. At the same time, the rise of divorce and separation becomes a very strong trend in modern society. Due to absence of joint custody in Russia, connection between fathers and children weakens after divorce and in this context the research question is: Do children help their elderly fathers after divorce, and what is the gender specificity in upward transfers after divorce? The object of this study is to examine the transfers that elderly Russian men and women get from their children. This research is based on data from the “Comprehensive Monitoring of Living Conditions of the Population” conducted in Russia in 2014. The target sample consisted of 113 000 persons over 15 years old—37 787 of which were over retirement age. The survey covered all regions of the Russian Federation. The method used in this analysis is mainly descriptive statistics and correlation tables. According to the results there is a considerable gap between elderly men and women in getting help from their children due to weakened connections between children and their fathers after divorce. This problem can be solved with the development of institutions of social protection, but unfortunately this sphere in Russia has not yet been sufficiently developed.

The sustainability of an unfunded pension system depends highly on demographic and labour market trends, i.e. how fertility, mortality, and employment rates change. In this paper we provide a brief summary of recent developments in these fields in Hungary and draw up a picture of the current situation. Then, we forecast the path of the economic old-age dependency ratio, i.e. the ratio of the elderly and employed populations. We make different alternative assumptions about fertility, mortality, and employment rates. According to our baseline scenario the dependency ratio is expected to rise from 40.6% to 77% by 2050. Such a sharp increase makes policy intervention inevitable. Based on our sensitivity analysis, the only viable remedy is increasing the retirement age.

Qualitative research is based on quantitative research results, accordingly has been designed a questionnaire that has helped to reveal the research question. MS Excel program was applied for analyzing quantitative research, and thematic analysis method for qualitative research. The results of the research reveal that most elderly people do not have meaningful occupation, do not do any kind of job, do not engage in their preferred occupation. These circumstances are interpreted as the work for the livelihoods organized by the institution. In addition, this was explained not only by the lack of alternative occupation options in the institution, but also by the lack of desire of the elderly. The elderly voiced also financial and health problems that hindered their involvement in their preferred occupation.

In the modern world, the number of elderly people with various diseases is growing, they need an appropriate care. Care implementation requires special knowledge, mental and economic expenditures. Ensuring a decent old age for the elderly is one of the problems of modern society. Comprehensive geriatric assessment is a multidimensional interdisciplinary diagnostic process for assessing the physical, psychological, functional and socio-economic problems of elderly people in order to develop a comprehensive individual plan for their treatment and rehabilitation. Comprehensive geriatric assessment benefits the elderly population, but the effectiveness of comprehensive geriatric assessment to improve the life quality of the elderly remains unclear. The article provides an overview of studies devoted to studying the effectiveness of using comprehensive geriatric assessment. The article discusses the influence of a comprehensive geriatric assessment on determining the life quality of the elderly, the duration of their stay in the hospital, and relieving the caregivers' burden. In addition, the influence of a comprehensive geriatric assessment on the ability to determine life expectancy, to conduct early diagnosis of major geriatric syndromes, the risk of morbidity and mortality in elderly patients is being considered. It is important that on the basis of a comprehensive geriatric assessment, appropriate rehabilitation programs can be drawn up, and technologies for rehabilitation can be determined.

Due to the aging of population there is a need for reevaluation of the importance and the necessity of elderly people’s participation in the life of society and as a result reevaluation of the methods of their adjustment. Modern “third aged people” want to continue living in the habitual rhythm of life, being the full participants of the society even after their retirement. The social portrait of a modern elderly differs significantly from the one 15-20 years ago. The level of medicine in the developed countries provides them with good state of health and therefore they can retain high level of social and emotional activity. Using several countries (Japan, Australia, Canada,) as an example the article aims to present different ways of inclusion of elderly people in socially useful activities in order to solve the problems of the modern society, in other words, to suggest how third aged people may be helpful. The article sums up that giving the opportunity of social and professional activity to the elderly people helps them to prevent social maladjustment and arising feeling of needlessness after the termination of active employment.

Modern society is becoming more and more complex, not only technologies are changing, but also its socio-age structure. For the first time, mankind found itself in a situation where there are more elderly people than young people, and it turned out to be not ready for this. A new task arises - the coordination of interactions and interests of many subjects of social interaction in the interests of the elderly. The traditional administrative influences of the state are becoming insufficient; mechanisms of self-organization of society and the autonomy of citizens are gradually taking shape. A new problem has become not only the rapid aging of society, but also an increase in the number of elderly people requiring constant care in the last years of their lives, since the already existing «closed institutions». Nursing homes are less popular today. The article provides an overview of Russian legislation on long-term care for the elderly, as well as an analysis of the successes and barriers to interaction in organizing care for the state, commercial and non-profit institutions in St. Petersburg. Petersburg is a city of the elderly population and developed social services for the elderly. Therefore, we have the right to conclude that social services in St. Petersburg can be viewed as a promising model for the development of long-term care for the elderly. The purpose of the article is to analyze the peculiarities of interactions between various subjects of the system of long-term care for the elderly that is emerging in St. Petersburg. We are interested in situations when the existing legal norms/regulation/interference in interactions are sufficient for the tasks of care to be solved, and the participants did not suffer. And vice versa, when the existing regulations are insufficient, and either the tasks are not being solved, or the injured party is an elderly person or his family.
