Introduction: Patient admission into the critical care unit is usually an unpleasant and unexpected life experience for the family members, and unusual for family members to cope with stress and anxiety during their hospital stay.  Purpose: This study aimed to explore the expectations and needs of family members of the patients in critical care units at two tertiary care hospitals in Islamabad. Methodology: An exploratory descriptive design was used to address the study questions. Using purposive sampling, 14 family members were individually interviewed through a semi- structured interview guide. A conventional content analysis method was used to analyze the data through which categories and sub-categories were identified. Findings: The data analysis revealed three roles of the family members, which included assistance in physical care, facilitator in the provision of treatment and the decision maker. The participants expressed that their needs for information and assurance were being met to some extent; however, their need for support and comfort were not. Although the physical facilities for meeting the comfort were available in private hospital, it did not match the family members’ expectations. Conclusion: This study revealed that despite some similarities in the role and needs, the expectations and satisfaction of the family members is linked to their awareness of the healthcare system as well as the cost of the obtained services. The suggestions of the family members are implementable to improve their experiences and satisfaction in critical care units, which can enable them to perform their roles better.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has emphasized the importance of visitation in critical care units and its beneficial effects on patients and their families. However, nurses' attitudes and beliefs about visitation did not correlate with those of patients and their families, nor did actual visitation practices correlate with written policy. OBJECTIVE: To investigate nurses' perceptions about open vs restricted visiting hours and the effects on the patient, the patient's family, and the nurse. METHODS: Quantitative and qualitative data were collected from 201 nurses who completed a survey instrument about nurses' perceptions of visitation at five metropolitan hospitals in a midwestern city. RESULTS: Seventy percent of official policies for visitation were restrictive. In practice, 78% of nurses were nonrestrictive in their visitation practices. Variables that affected practices regarding visiting hours were the patient's need for rest, the nurse's workload, and the beneficial effects of visitation on patients. Requests from patients and their families were ranked least important. Significant differences in practices were found regarding restriction of visiting by immediate family members and of the number of visitors. Restricted hours were perceived to decrease noise (83%) and promote patients' rest (85%). Open visitation practices were perceived to beneficially affect the patient (67%) and the patient's family (88%) and to decrease anxiety (64%). Perceptions of ideal visiting hours included restrictions on the number of visitors (75%), hours (57%), visits by children (55%), and duration of visits (54%), but no restriction on visitation by immediate family members (60%). Qualitative data revealed recurrent themes in visitation practices, policies and exceptions, control of visitation by patients, and nurses' wishes. CONCLUSION: Data indicate that most nurses do not restrict visitation, regardless of whether restrictive policies are in place. Most nurses base their visitation decisions on the needs of the patient and the nurse. Needs of the family were ranked as less important in decision making about family visitation.

Background and objective: Having a family member admitted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is stressful and confusing for family members.  The aim of this study was to assess the perception of family members and nurses of their needs and whether those needs are met in four ICUs in Lebanon. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional design using the Arabic version of Critical Care Family Need Inventory (CCFNI) and the Needs Met Inventory (NMI) were utilized to investigate the needs of 50 family members of patients and 50 nurses. Results: Seventeen of 30 need items on the CCFNI were significantly different between family members and nurses mostly related to ‘Information’ and ‘Assurance’. Family members also varied significantly on 5 out of 30 items on the NMI mostly related to ‘Support’. There were significant differences in needs between family members in terms of gender, age, and education, and significant differences in perceived needs based on the gender, years of experience, and age of nurses. Conclusions: The findings provide insight for nurses to consider the different needs of families, the effect of socio-demographic variations when providing care, and to be attuned to the needs of family members for understandable information and assurance of the wellbeing of patients in ICUs.

This is a quantitative methodological development study on the cross-cultural adaptation of the "Family Needs Questionnaire" (FNQ), which is a structured instrument developed in the United States to measure the perceived needs of family members after the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) of a relative. This instrument aims to identify important needs presented by family members, whether met or not. The FNQ translation and adaptation followed a particular method, which permitted to achieve semantic, idiomatic, cultural and conceptual equivalence of the instrument version labeled in Portuguese as "Questionário de Necessidades da Família". The results of the questionnaire application to 161 family members showed that the instrument content is valid to measure the needs of families of patients with TBI in the Brazilian context.

The results of the study found that the responsibility of religious education of children in the family of Tablighi Jama'ah differed in terms of several conditions, namely first, when parents were not going to khuruj where both parents were responsible for children's education; secondly, when the father goes khuruj, then the mother is responsible for everything including children's education; third, when both parents go khuruj, then the responsibility of the child is left to other family members such as grandparents or their first adult children; and fourth, when the child goes to khuruj, where parents are responsible for children's religious education both mother and father. The pattern of the religious education in the Tablighi Jama'ah family in the village of Bolang is formed from several similarities held in the implementation of religious education, one of which is the daily activity that is carried out by the Tablighi Jama'at family. Al-Qur'an becomes one of the material given to children in the ta'lim. Children are taught how to read the Qur'an and memorize short letters such as Surat al-Falaq, al-Ikhlas, and so on. In addition to al-Qur'an, in this ta'lim there is a special study in the Tablighi Jama'ah, which is reading the book of fadhilah ‘amal, and the last is mudzakarah six characteristics.

Canada has an aging population with the fastest growing age groups (80 and 45-64 years old) vulnerable to age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. Caregiving responsibilities often fall to the family members of the afflicted without much attention and consideration being placed on the information needs of these caregivers. We call for a better understanding of these caregivers' information needs and uses by social policy makers as well as information providers.La population du Canada a tendance à vieillir considérablement, avec la hausse la plus rapide dans les groupes d’âge (80 et 45 à 64 ans). Les personnes âges sont très vulnérables à toute sorte de maladies, telles que la maladie d’Alzheimer.
