The gnathodynamometer is a device meant for the measurement of biting force and the assessment of masticator performance. The devices reported in the literature have not been very convenient to use, and have often undergone modifications. In this paper, a systematic mechatronic approach has been followed in the design and development of a gnathodynamometer, to overcome reported inadequacies. The design problem imposes several constraints of size, access, loading, safety, hygiene, and so on. The gnathodynamometer developed in this work is designed for a maximum biting force of 600 N, and a maximum deflection of 1 mm. Design of the main component, which is the fork, has been elaborately explained. Strain gauges located at the root of the inner surface of each prong have been used to sense the strains arising due to the application of biting force. The complete electronic circuit has been designed. Readings of biting force are displayed on a digital readout. The circuit includes selection of strain gauges, design of Wheatstone bridge, preamplifier. The device is then calibrated and a relationship between applied biting force and output voltage is obtained.

Abstract. Flexible electronics represents an emerging technology with features enabling several new applications such as wearable electronics and bendable displays. Precise and high-performance sensors readout chips are crucial for high quality flexible electronic products. In this work, the design of a CMOS readout circuit for an array of printed strain gauges is presented. The ultra-thin readout chip and the printed sensors are combined on a thin Benzocyclobutene/Polyimide (BCB/PI) substrate to form a Hybrid System-in-Foil (HySiF), which is used as an electronic skin for robotic applications. Each strain gauge utilizes a Wheatstone bridge circuit, where four Aerosol Jet® printed meander-shaped resistors form a full-bridge topology. The readout chip amplifies the output voltage difference (about 5 mV full-scale swing) of the strain gauge. One challenge during the sensor interface circuit design is to compensate for the relatively large dc offset (about 30 mV at 1 mA) in the bridge output voltage so that the amplified signal span matches the input range of an analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The circuit design uses the 0. 5 µm mixed-signal GATEFORESTTM technology. In order to achieve the mechanical flexibility, the chip fabrication is based on either back thinned wafers or the ChipFilmTM technology, which enables the manufacturing of silicon chips with a thickness of about 20 µm. The implemented readout chip uses a supply of 5 V and includes a 5-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC), a differential difference amplifier (DDA), and a 10-bit successive approximation register (SAR) ADC. The circuit is simulated across process, supply and temperature corners and the simulation results indicate excellent performance in terms of circuit stability and linearity.

Background: The output voltage frequency for the previously proposed "phase hopping" AC-AC frequency conversion technology is determined by the law that the number of output voltage cycles is reduced by one relative to the power frequency in a large cycle containing six jumps. According to the law, only a limited number of output frequencies, such as 37.5 Hz, 42.86 Hz and 45 Hz are found. Due to the large spacing between the output frequencies, the "phase hopping" frequency conversion technology is difficult to put into practical use. Methods: In this paper, the law of the output frequency control is generalized so that the number of output cycles in a large cycle is reduced by n relative to the power frequency. The analysis shows that the appropriate selection of large cycles, including the number of power frequency cycles and the value of n, can find more frequencies to be used. Reducing the interval between the output frequencies within 1Hz. Results: The analysis results were verified in simulation by MATLAB, and the harmonics and the feasibility of the actual application were analyzed. Conclusion: Finally, an experimental platform was built and an experimental analysis was carried out. The experimental results show that the theoretical and simulation analyses are correct.

Total knee replacement (TKR) is a remarkable achievement in biomedical science that enhances human life. However, human beings still suffer from knee-joint-related problems such as aseptic loosening caused by excessive wear between articular surfaces, stress-shielding of the bone by prosthesis, and soft tissue development in the interface of bone and implant due to inappropriate selection of TKR material. The choice of most suitable materials for the femoral component of TKR is a critical decision; therefore, in this research paper, a hybrid multiple-criteria decision-making (MCDM) tactic is applied using the degree of membership (DoM) technique with a varied system, using the weighted sum method (WSM), the weighted product method (WPM), the weighted aggregated sum product assessment method (WASPAS), an evaluation based on distance from average solution (EDAS), and a technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). The weights of importance are assigned to different criteria by the equal weights method (EWM). Furthermore, sensitivity analysis is conducted to check the solidity of the projected tactic. The weights of importance are varied using the entropy weights technique (EWT) and the standard deviation method (SDM). The projected hybrid MCDM methodology is simple, reliable and valuable for a conflicting decision-making environment.

In Reply.— We are glad to respond to Dr MacMahon's letter about the generalizability of the results of our trial. Basing trial entry on `clinical uncertainty' is actually one of the strengths of this trial.1 No trial can ever include a random sample of all human beings who meet the eligibility criteria; there is always selection of subjects (whatever the entry criteria). Inevitably, therefore, at some point there has to be a leap of faith from the evidence to clinical practice.2

An extraluminal displacement transducer has been developed for simultaneously recording the mechanical activity in two perpendicular directions andthe electrical activity of the intestinal serosa. The length variations in two perpendicular directions were measured by means of strain gauges bounded on two pairs of lamellae embedded in a rigid stand. The electrical activity was recorded by means of four electrodes situated at the extremity of these lamellae. The electrical gauges of each pair of lamellae are connected to form a Wheatstone bridge. This device allows establishment of a correlation between the mechanical displacement of the intestinal wall serosa and electrical potentials by means of studies of long duration.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this research was to quantify the genetic divergence of potential Coffea canephora parents, with the goal of developing progenies that associate the best traits of the Conilon and Robusta botanical varieties for hybrid vigor expression. Thus, 10 morphological and productive characteristics of 130 clones of Conilon and Robusta botanical varieties and their intervarietal hybrids were evaluated over 2 years. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with four replicates of four plants per plot. For selection of parents, the main component analysis was used to associate values with reference points obtained from the average of each botanical variety. The first two principal components allowed for the separation of the botanical varieties representing the variability contained in the original data with 76% for the first year and 69% for the second year. Although, the genotype × years interaction had significant effects, there were minor differences in the grouping from one year to the next, which is associated with the higher repeatability estimates observed in this study. It was observed that crosses with the 16-1-81I, 9-1-82L, and 13-1-61I parents of the botanical variety Robusta and the 167I, 890E, and 130I parents of the Conilon botanical variety presented greater potential for obtaining selection gains.

This article refers to carbon valuation as the practice of ascribing value to, and assessing the value of, actions and objects in terms of carbon emissions. Due to the pervasiveness of carbon emissions in the actions and objects of everyday lives of human beings, the making of carbon offsets and credits offers almost unlimited repertoires of alternatives to be included in contemporary carbon valuation schemes. Consequently, the article unpacks how discussions of carbon valuation are interpreted through different registers of alternatives - as the commensuration and substitution of variants on the one hand, and the confrontational comparison of radical difference on the other. Through the reading of a wide selection of the social science literature on carbon markets and trading, the article argues that the value of carbon emissions itself depends on the construction of alternative, hypothetical scenarios, and that emissions have become both a moral and a virtual measure pitting diverse forms of actualised actions or objects against each other or against corresponding nonactions and non-objects as alternatives.
