The safety of pipelines and subsea structures are key elements in subsea field developments. As part of the safety engineering, protection from dropped objects and third party impact actions is required. This article addresses this aspect. Dropped object from a platform or a vessel is one of the design scenarios. The fall-pattern of the object is essential for the impact velocity and corresponding energy, model of the path and the effects of hydrodynamic behavior is outlined. In lieu of accurate information, the design code use energy band for energy estimates and may give extremely conservative impact energy. The falling objects structural flexibility and properties are discussed and evaluated regarding the energy dissipation and possible damage of the pipeline. The pipeline combined response from global deflection and denting regarding impacts are investigated. Analysis and testing methods applied in pipeline design are presented. Focus is placed on the overall interaction between the impacting object, the deformed pipeline and energy dissipation by coating and soil. Typically, pipeline damage from design codes provides conservative cross sectional damage estimates. This is confirmed from both simplified and detailed FE analyses, as well as fullscale impact experiments performed by REINERTSEN AS. One of the main objectives promoted by the authors is the importance of both impact velocity and mass during impact, and not only the kinetic energy of the impact. The kinetic energy from a dropped object is unlikely to be fully dissipated as cross sectional deformation of the pipeline. Global deformations will be triggered, which implies that the dissipated energy going into local denting is reduced to a fractional value. The effect is more pronounced for small diameter pipelines than for pipelines with large diameter. This paper discusses the impact mechanics and seeks to estimate the fractional value by using simplified element analysis.

Shear wave elastography (SWE) is a type of ultrasound elastography with which the elastic properties of breast tissues can be quantitatively assessed. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of different regions of interest (ROI) and lesion size on the performance of SWE in differentiating malignant breast lesions. The study included 150 female patients with histopathologically confirmed malignant breast lesions. Minimal (Emin), mean (Emean), maximal (Emax) elastic modulus and elasticity ratio (e-ratio) values were measured using a circular ROI size of 2, 4 and 6 mm diameters and the lesions were divided into large (diameter ≥ 15 mm) and small (diameter < 15 mm). Highest Emin, Emean and e-ratio values and lowest variability were observed when using the 2 mm ROI. Emax values did not differ between different ROI sizes. Larger lesions had significantly higher Emean and Emax values, but there was no difference in e-ratio values between lesions of different sizes. In conclusion, when measuring the Emin, Emean and e-ratio of malignant breast lesions using SWE the smallest possible ROI size should be used regardless of lesion size. ROI size has no impact on Emax values while lesion size has no impact on e-ratio values.

Water entry of a hull with wedge-shaped cross sections is analyzed. The stiffened platings between two transverse girders on each side of the keel are separately modeled. Orthotropic plate theory is used. The effect of structural vibrations on the fluid flow is incorporated by solving the two-dimensional Laplace equation in the cross-sectional fluid domain by a generalized Wagner's theory. The coupling with the plate theory provides three-dimensional flow effects. The theory is validated by comparison with full-scale experiments and drop tests. The importance of global ship accelerations is pointed out. Hydrodynamic and structural error sources are discussed. Systematic studies on the importance of hydroelasticity as a function of deadrise angle and impact velocity are presented. This can be related to the ratio between the wetting time of the structure and the greatest wet natural period of the stiffened plating. This ratio is proportional to the deadrise angle and inversely proportional to the impact velocity. A small ratio-means that hydroelasticity is important and a large ratio means that hydroelasticity is not important.

The large degradation of the mechanical performance of hollow reinforced concrete (RC) bridge piers subjected to multi-dimensional earthquakes has not been thoroughly assessed. This paper aims to improve the existing seismic damage model to assess the seismic properties of tall, hollow RC piers subjected to pseudo-static, biaxial loading. Cyclic bilateral loading tests on fourteen 1/14-scale pier specimens with different slenderness ratios, axial load ratios, and transverse reinforcement ratios were carried out to investigate the damage propagation and the cumulative dissipated energy with displacement loads. By considering the influence of energy dissipation on structural damage, a new damage model (M-Usami model) was developed to assess the damage characteristics of hollow RC piers. The results present four consecutive damage stages during the loading process: (a) cracking on concrete surface, (b) yielding of longitudinal reinforcements; (c) spalling of concrete, and (d) collapsing of pier after the concrete crushed and the longitudinal bars ruptured due to the flexural failure. The damage level caused by the seismic waves can be reduced by designing specimens with a good seismic energy dissipation capacity. The theoretical damage index values calculated by the M-Usami model agreed well with the experimental observations. The developed M-Usami model can provide insights into the approaches to assessing the seismic damage of hollow RC piers subjected to bilateral seismic excitations.

In order to explore the impact of freeze-thaw temperature on the sputtering rate of water-saturated yellow sandstone under impact loading, in this paper, the Hopkinson pressure bar is used to conduct impact loading test on the water-saturated yellow sandstone at the same strain rate (74.22 s−1) under five different freeze-thaw temperatures. After impact loading, the yellow sandstone fragments are graded and screened by using the sizing screen, and the mass of fragments with different particle sizes after screening is counted. By transforming the fragments into spheres with the corresponding particle sizes, and combining the dissipated energy, the surface specific energy of yellow sandstone with different freeze-thaw temperatures is calculated. Finally, the sputtering rate of the fragments is obtained by using the relationship of total work, dissipated energy, and kinetic energy. The main conclusions are as follows: The freeze-thaw temperature has a significant effect on the fracture degree of yellow sandstone. The lower the freeze-thaw temperature is, the higher the fracture degree of yellow sandstone is, and the smaller the particle size distribution of fragments is. The fractal dimension of yellow sandstone increases with the decrease of freeze-thaw temperature, indicating that the damage of yellow sandstone is more serious. The dissipative energy of yellow sandstone increases with the decrease of freezing temperature, while the kinetic energy increases gradually when the freeze-thaw temperature is −30°C to −15°C and decreases gradually when the freeze-thaw temperature is −15°C to −5°C. The surface area and surface specific energy of yellow sandstone fragments both increase with the increase of freeze-thaw temperature. And the sputtering rate of yellow sandstone fragments increases gradually at freezing temperature from −30°C to −15°C and decreases gradually at −15°C to −5°C. Therefore, from the perspective of dynamic destruction process, the sputtering of yellow sandstone fragments at freezing temperatures of −15°C, −20°C, and −30°C is more intense than that at −5°C and −10°C. The results can provide some guidance for production in winter and winter regions.

Structural pounding during earthquakes may cause substantial damage to colliding structures. The phenomenon is numerically studied using different models of collisions. The aim of the present paper is to propose an effective formula for the impact damping ratio, as a parameter of the impact force model used to study different problems of structural pounding under seismic excitations. Its accuracy has been verified by four various approaches. Firstly, for the case of collisions between two structural elements, the dissipated energy during impact has been compared to the loss of kinetic energy. In the second stage of verifications, the peak impact forces during single collision have been analyzed. Then, the accuracy of different equations have been verified by comparing the impact force time histories for the situation when a concrete ball is dropped on a rigid concrete surface. Finally, pounding between two structures during earthquakes has been studied. The results of the analysis focused on comparison between dissipated and kinetic energy show relatively low errors between calculated and assumed values of the coefficient of restitution when the proposed equation is used. In addition, the results of the comparison between experimentally and numerically determined peak impact forces during single collision confirm the effectiveness of the approach. The same conclusion has been obtained for the whole impact time history for collision between a ball and a rigid surface. Finally, the results of the comparative analysis, conducted for pounding between two structures during an earthquake, confirm the simulation accuracy when the proposed approach is used. The above conclusions indicate that the proposed formula for impact damping ratio, as a parameter of impact force model for simulation of earthquake-induced structural pounding, is very effective and accurate in numerical simulations in the case of different scenarios.

Residual stresses within stainless steel pipe welds may cause or exacerbate in-service cracking. Significant investigative efforts have been devoted to the examination of piping residual stresses in large diameter piping using both finite element modeling and experimental techniques, but limited information is available for small diameter piping. Even less information is available for small diameter piping welds which have been repaired or re-worked during initial fabrication. This investigation used both experimental methods and analytical modeling to assess the impact of repair welding during initial fabrication on the residual stresses along the inner diameter (ID) of small diameter pipe specimens. The investigation showed that tensile axial residual stresses were located in the heat affected zone (HAZ) along the ID of the pipe specimens adjacent to regions which were excavated and re-welded. Such repair welds were also shown to markedly increase the magnitude of the tensile axial residual stresses for weld configurations which otherwise had lower magnitude residual stresses.

Armor-piercing ammunition is primarily used to combat against heavy armored targets (tanks), but targets can be light armored vehicles, aircraft, warehouse, structures, etc. It has been shown that the most effective type of anti-tank ammunition in the world is the APFSDS ammunition (Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot). The APFSDS projectile flies to the target and with his kinetic energy acts on the target, that is, penetrates through armor and disables the tank and his crew. Since the projectile destroys target with his kinetic energy, then it is necessary for the projectile to have the high impact velocity. The decrease in the velocity of a projectile, during flight, is mainly influenced by aerodynamic forces. The most dominant is the axial force due to the laid trajectory of the projectile. By knowing the axial force (axial force coefficient), it is possible to predict the impact velocity of the projectile, by external ballistic calculation, in function of the distance of the target, and to define the maximum effective range from the aspect of terminal ballistics. In this paper two models will be presented for predicting axial force (the axial force coefficient) of an APFSDS projectile after discarding sabot. The first model is defined in STANAG 4655 Ed.1. This model is used to predict the axial force coefficient for all types of conventional projectiles. The second model for predicting the axial force coefficient of an APFSDS projectile, which is presented in the paper, is the CFD-model (Computed Fluid Dynamics).

The analysis of energy dissipation characteristics is a basic way to elucidate the mechanism of coal rock fragmentation. In order to study the energy dissipation patterns during dynamic tensile deformation damage of coal samples, the Brazilian disc (BD) splitting test under impact conditions was conducted on burst-prone coal samples using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) loading system. The effects of impact velocity, bedding angle, and water saturated on the total absorbed energy density, total dissipated energy density, and damage variables of coal samples were investigated. In addition, the coal samples were collected after crushing to produce debris with particle sizes of 0-0.2 mm and 0.2-5 mm, and the distribution characteristics of different size debris were compared and analyzed. The results show that the damage variables of natural dry coal samples increase approximately linearly with the increase of impact velocity; however, the overall damage variables of saturated coal samples increase exponentially as a function of impact velocity. Compared with air-dry samples, the number of fragments with the particle size of 0-0.2 mm of saturated samples decreases by 14.1%-31.3%, and the number of fragments with the particle size of 0.2-5 mm decreases by 33.7%-53.0%. However, when the bedding angle is 45°, the percentage of fragment mass of saturated samples is larger than that of air-dry samples. The conclusions provide a theoretical basis for understanding the deterioration mechanism of coal after water saturation and the implementation of water injection dust prevention technology in coal mines.

The propagation characteristics of viscoelastic waves have been investigated with a 6 mm diameter split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) made of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The strain signals in SHPB tests were improved by the pulse shaping technique. Based on the experimentally determined propagation coefficients, the amplitude attenuation and wave dispersion induced by viscoelastic effects at different impact velocities were quantitatively analyzed. The results indicate that the high-frequency harmonics attenuate faster in a higher phase velocity. With an increase in the impact velocity, the amplitude attenuation of the viscoelastic wave changes slightly during propagation, while the waveform dispersion gradually intensifies. A feasible method by waveform prediction was proposed to verify the validity and applicability of the propagation coefficient. The results indicate that the strain obtained from the small diameter viscoelastic SHPB can be effectively modified by utilizing the propagation coefficient. Furthermore, it is preferred to adopt the propagation coefficient obtained at low impact velocity for correction when the impact velocity varies. Moreover, the PMMA-steel bar impact test was performed to further illustrate the accuracy of the propagation coefficient and the effectiveness of the correction method.
