The management process of an aquatic system such as Lake Ontario depends on a dynamic information base and occurs within an environment comprising ecological, social, cultural, political, and economic factors. It is critical that this information base include socioeconomic components pertaining to resource user values and behaviors as well as the traditional ecological components. This paper reviews socioeconomic information pertaining to the utilization and valuation of Lake Ontario's sport fisheries. It also examines the socioeconomic components of assessing the risks to humans posed by contaminants present in sport fish, communicating this information to fish consumers, and monitoring and understanding human responses to these communications. Several studies have examined the economic impacts of sport fishing on coastal communities of Lake Ontario. Few studies have examined the net economic value of sportfishing to anglers, or how contaminants have reduced such values. Similarly, few studies have examined how the public responds to information about contaminants in sport fish. Some research in these areas is currently underway.

Abstract Hurricane warnings are the primary sources of information that enable the public to assess the risk and develop responses to threats from hurricanes. These warnings have significantly reduced the number of hurricane-related fatalities in the last several decades. Further investment in the science and implementation of the warning system is a primary mission of the National Weather Service and its partners. It is important that the weather community understand the public’s preferences and values for such investments; yet, there is little empirical information on the use of forecasts in evacuation decision making, the economic value of current forecasts, or the potential use or value for improvements in hurricane forecasts. Such information is needed to evaluate whether improved forecast provision and dissemination offer more benefit to society than alternative public investments. Fundamental aspects of households’ perceptions of hurricane forecasts and warnings and their potential uses of and values for improved hurricane forecast information are examined. The study was designed in part to examine the viability of survey research methods for exploring evacuation decision making and for eliciting values for improved hurricane forecasts and warnings. First, aspects that affect households’ stated likelihood of evacuation are explored, because informing such decisions is one of the primary purposes of hurricane forecasts and warnings. Then, stated-choice valuation methods are used to analyze choices between potential forecast-improvement programs and the accuracy of existing forecasts. From this, the willingness to pay (WTP) for improved forecasts is derived from survey respondents.

In their "Guidelines for the Diagnosis of Streptococcal Infection" (Pediatrics, 48:573, 1971), Honikman and Massell did not specify whether the guidelines should vary by geographic location. Taking into consideration the economic factors mentioned by the authors, should the same guidelines apply to different areas of the country which have markedly different incidences of rheumatic fever? We are all aware that the public is (rightfully) taking a close look at the quality of medical practice. Practice audits appear to be a certainty in the future.

Seahorse (Hippocampus spp.) has a high economic value in Bintan Island that leads to its exploitation by coastal community intensively. This study was to assess local knowledge on seahorse ecology which was captured across shoreline near the coastal communities. The research was conducted in SebongPereh village Bintan Island. The data were collected by conducting depth interviews and focus group discussion on seahorse fishermen which was selected purposively. The results revealed local fishermen have ecological knowledge related to habitat types, behavior, and monthly variation in abundance, size and reproduction pattern. The result also showed that the existence of the seahorse during the catch season moves around, follow the condition of the seaweed and tidal of sea water. This local knowledge was used by fishermen as a strategy in determining the fishing time and catchment area of a seahorse. Through such local wisdom, local fishing communities established a local institution to manage conversation and sustainability use of seahorse in waters of SebongPereh village.

ABSTRACT.Blue Economy concept began with the farming of Artemia salt. The industry of farmer’s salt was one of the pillars that supported the economy of coastal communities. At present, the perspectives of the public on an industrial salt production is less profitable and conducted by unskilled laborers. Nowadays, the farmer still used evaporation total method of sea water by solar power, where NaClwas ≤ 90% and residual brine. It is necessary to improve the salt production through combination between disk-mill and distillation evaporation technology to produce salt diversification product. The result of the combination process were refined salt with NaClthat was ≥ 90%, liquid salt with NaClthat was ± 60% and mineral water.

The AgLINK bulletin series dominated all agricultural and horticultural information publications from the late 1960s to the late 1980s, when it was discontinued. The collapse of such a high profile series raises questions about the viability of such a mechanism for linking farmers with facts. This failure highlights three key issues: the need to define and allocate the costs based on who benefits; the appropriate positioning of parties within the distribution chain; and a quality specification to which bulletins must adhere. We consider that AgFACT, the AgResearch pastoral agriculture information base which superseded AgLINK in 1997, should largely be cost neutral to science groups in AgResearch. However, the resources for providing information need to be met by science programmes, a cost which is outweighed by the opportunity to communicate with science stakeholders. The costs of distribution and retail need to fall with the other parties who benefit from the dissemination of this information - the retailer and the end user. We also consider that the role of AgResearch is in manufacture rather than sales to the public, which is best done by the agricultural service sector. AgFACT must maintain tight specifications, to ensure that it is relevant to farmers and other users, accurate and unbiased, and up to date. The penalty for not doing so is a loss of value and, moreover, a risk of it becoming a public liability. Keywords: AgFACT, AgLINK, agricultural information, information base, technology transfer

The creative industry is a business activity that focuses on creation and innovation which must always be improved and developed in all regions in Indonesia, because it is rich in culture and natural resources. One example is RT 03 RW 14 Sawojajar Sekarpuro Village, Pakis Subdistrict, which has creative activities, where each resident is required to plant figs and process them. So far, residents still do not know the products that can be produced from tin fruit and the processing stages, all that has been done is making tea bags, but the results obtained are not as expected. The aim of this service is to provide assistance and training for residents of Sawojajar RT 03 RW 14 in processing various foods from fruit and drinks from Tin leaves and transfer of appropriate technology in the process to produce superior products from commercial Tin fruit. The implementation method that will be used is assistance in making products for PKK groups of women who are divided into 5 (five) small groups, mentoring and training for processing into products, assistance in the use of drying equipment, packaging and marketing. From the mentoring and training that has been carried out by the ITN Malang Community Service Team, it has had a significant impact, namely that residents gain knowledge and practice directly the processing of Tin fruit into various processed products and operating equipment in making Tin leaf tea and increasing economic value because residents have produce products and sell them to the public.
