BACKGROUND: Tobacco use continues to be the leading cause of preventable death worldwide. OBJECTIVE: To assess perceived tobacco educational preparation of undergraduate and graduate nurses in a large urban university. DESIGN: A cross-sectional web-based survey of all nursing students in an urban college of nursing was conducted to assess perceived tobacco educational content, skills, and self-efficacy for cessation counseling with patients who smoke cigarettes and use alternative tobacco products (e.g., hookah and e-cigarettes). RESULTS: Participants reported the most education about health effects of tobacco use (67%), and less than 6% reported education about alternative tobacco products. While the majority of nurses agreed that advising patients to quit is a priority, less than 40% reported receiving sufficient training in cessation counseling. CONCLUSIONS: There continues to be a compelling need articulated by leaders in tobacco policy and research over the past decade for a more vigorous response by nurses to the tobacco epidemic.

Background: As future professionals, nursing students are expected to exhibit online professionalism and to be responsible users of social media. However, the rapid sharing of information on social media exposes nursing students to the risk and danger of spreading unprofessional behaviors like breaches of privacy and confidentiality.Objective: This study looked into the nursing students’ perceptions and attitude toward responsible use of social media.Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional research design was utilized and participated by 298 nursing students in a College of Nursing in Iloilo City, Philippines. The Responsible Use of Social Media Attitude Scale (RUSMAS) created by the researchers was used to collect the data.Results: Findings indicated that nursing students widely use social media and that nursing students had good perceptions and had positive attitude toward responsible use of social media. A significant difference was found in the attitude of nursing students when grouped according to year level.Conclusion: Social media continue to gain interest among nursing students and using it responsibly must be continuously upheld. Academic nursing institutions should develop approaches promoting social media literacy in nursing education.

Background: Nursing students’ satisfaction with their undergraduate program is essential and can serve as an instrument of assessment of institutional effectiveness and success. Objective: To evaluate and understanding student satisfaction with nursing program in areas of curriculum, college environment, Faculty and clinical interaction with the college of nursing at university of sulaimani. Methods: Cross sectional study was conducted for 170 students in nursing college at university of sulaimani, from period of 1st November to 25th February to identify their satisfaction with the nursing program. A non probability \ purposive sampling technique was applied to 170 the students of nursing studying in the second to fourth year. A questionnaire was constructed by the researchers to elicit the detailed information related to study objectives. Subjects were completed as interview technique. Content and Face Validity of the instrument was established and the reliability was measured by using Cronbach’s alpha = 0.96. Formula in the questionnaire list. All statistical computation is enhanced using statistical method (SPSS 21) The result of the study showed that More than half (51.76) of the study participants were barely satisfied, younger students had greater satisfaction comparing their peers. There were no significant associations between students’ satisfaction with the nursing program dimensions and participant’s age and academic level. Conclusion: Generally, the findings of the study showed that students’ satisfaction with a nursing program was neutral. The study gets the attention to the many positive as well as negative aspects of the clinical experience of the nursing students at the college, and the need to rethink clinical skills training in nursing education.

Background‘Ice’ e-cigarette flavours—marketed as a combination of fruity/sweet and cooling flavours (eg, ‘blueberry ice’ or ‘melon ice’)—recently entered the US market. The prevalence and correlates of ice flavoured e-cigarette use in young adults are unknown.MethodsThis cross-sectional study of a Los Angeles, California, USA, cohort analysed data from the past 30-day e-cigarette (current) users (n=344; M (SD)=21.2 (0.4) years old) who completed web-based surveys from May–August 2020. The exposure variable was self-reported e-cigarette flavour used most often in the past month (menthol/mint, fruit/sweet or ice). Outcomes included self-reported combustible tobacco use, vaping dependence symptoms, frequency of use and device type used.ResultsAmong current e-cigarette users, 48.8% reported using ice flavours most often, 33.7% predominately used fruit/sweet and 17.4% used menthol/mint. Using primarily ice-flavour was associated with reporting more past-30-day vaping days (vs menthol/mint: b=4.4, 95% CI (1 to 7.7); vs fruit/sweet: b=3.6, 95% CI (0.8 to 6.4)) and more episodes per vaping day versus fruit/sweet users (b=2.4, 95% CI (0.5 to 4.3)). Ice-flavour users were less likely than menthol/mint users to use JUUL/cartridge-based rechargeable (OR=0.1, 95% CI (0.03 to 0.45)) and more likely than sweet/fruit users to use disposable non-cartridge (OR=3.9, 95% CI (2.1 to 7.4)) devices than refillable/rechargeable tank/pen or other devices. Ice users had greater odds of past 30-day combustible tobacco use versus menthol/mint users (OR=2.7, 95% CI (1.3 to 5.7)) and vaping dependence symptoms than versus sweet/fruit users (OR=2.6, 95% CI (1.5 to 4.4)).ConclusionYoung adult use of ice flavoured e-cigarettes may be common and positively associated with combustible tobacco use, nicotine vaping frequency and dependence and use of disposable e-cigarette devices. Further study of the prevalence, determinants and health effects of ice flavoured e-cigarette use is warranted.

AbstractObjectiveCritical nutrition literacy (CNL), as an increasingly important area in public health nutrition, can be defined as the ability to critically analyse nutrition information, increase awareness and participate in action to address barriers to healthy eating behaviours. Far too little attention has been paid to establishing valid instruments for measuring CNL. The aim of the present study was to assess the appropriateness of utilizing the latent scales of a newly developed instrument assessing nursing students’ ‘engagement in dietary habits’ (the ‘engagement’ scale) and their level of ‘taking a critical stance towards nutrition claims and their sources’ (the ‘claims’ scale).DesignData were gathered by distributing a nineteen-item paper-and-pencil self-report questionnaire to university colleges offering nursing education. The study had a cross-sectional design using Rasch analysis. Data management and analysis were performed using the software packages RUMM2030 and SPSS version 20.SettingSchool personnel handed out the questionnaires.SubjectsFour hundred and seventy-three students at ten university colleges across Norway responded (52 % response rate).ResultsDisordered thresholds were rescored, an under-discriminating item was discarded and one item showing uniform differential item functioning was split. The assumption of item locations being differentiated by stages was strengthened. The analyses demonstrated possible dimension violations of local independence in the ‘claims’ scale data and the ‘engagement’ scale could have been better targeted.ConclusionsThe study demonstrates the usefulness of Rasch analysis in assessing the psychometric properties of scales developed to measure CNL. Qualitative research designs could further improve our understanding of CNL scales.

Management is a process of planning, decision making, organizing, leading, motivating and controlling, and an effective utilization of the resources to reach the organizational goals efficiently and effectively. Management has a crucial role in quality of work and production in any institutions. Although a rapid increase of Nursing Education Institutions in Nepal since last decade which had been trained thousands of nursing cadres, the management aspects of these institutions are not studied adequately. Thus current study intended to explore the current status of Nursing Education Institution Management as experienced and perceived by the bachelors nursing students. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among the nursing institutions in Kathmandu valley. Of the total 28 in the valley, 14 were selected purposively. From the selected institutions, all 377 eligible students currently in final year of study were selected. Among them, 208were from BSN and 169 were from B Sc program.  The data was collected through the self administered structured questioners after taking informed consent. Data entry and analysis was done in SPSS version 16 software. The findings of the study show that 70% students were satisfied in institutional management (mean59.62, SD ± 3.66). In academic management (78%), (mean139.82, SD ± 6.22), followed by human resources 67%, (mean43.54, SD ± 2.79) and were in physical resources management 75% students were satisfied (mean45.02, SD ± 3.08). Analysis of variations between group (administrators, faculties, students) found statistical significance (p value <0.05). So it is concluded the perception of students, faculties and administrator were different on managing the nursing education.

Background: Advice from health care professionals (HCPs) is critical for tobacco prevention and cessation efforts. The academic curricula for health care professional students (HCS) lack comprehensive training in assisting patients in tobacco cessation. Tobacco use among HCP’s deters them from giving proper tobacco prevention and cessation guidance. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and determinants of tobacco consumption in third-year students of four health care disciplines (medical, dental, pharmacy, and nursing) and to assess their undergraduate education on tobacco control and cessation. Methods:  A web-based survey (response rate 84.4%) employing the Global Health Professions Student Survey (GHPSS) questionnaire; n= 838; [20.89 (SD± 0.94) years] was conducted in Mysore, India. A descriptive, comparative and multivariate analysis was performed. Results: The number of students who received formal training in smoking cessation approaches was only 14.04%. In total, two-thirds of medical students, compared to 38.9% of dental, 29.7% of pharmacy, and 11.40 % of nursing students, learned “the reasons why people smoke” as a part of their formal training. However, only less than a quarter of the study population were aware of the role of antidepressants in nicotine cessation medications. The total prevalence of tobacco use was 28.9%. A total of 37.72% wanted to quit smoking, while a mere 1.2% had sought any professional help to do so. Conclusions: Tobacco use in HCS, apart from personal health risks to themselves, may potentially affect their future commitment to support patients in tobacco cessation. There is a need for further research into tobacco prevention and cessation programs tailored to the needs of student groups. There is a need for an updated curriculum for tobacco cessation strategies and more research into better cessation strategies.

Background: Given the physical and mental health consequences of tobacco use amongst individuals with mental illness, it was imperative to assess the burden of tobacco use in this population.Aim: This study examined the patterns and factors associated with tobacco use in individuals attending the outpatient unit.Setting: Cecilia Makiwane Hospital Mental Health Department in Eastern Cape province, South Africa.Methods: Lifetime (ever use) use and current use of any tobacco products were examined in a cross-sectional study of 390 individuals between March and June 2020. A logistic regression was fitted to determine the correlates of lifetime and current use of any tobacco products.Results: The rates of ever use and current use of tobacco products were 59.4% and 44.6%, respectively. Of the participants interviewed, lifetime tobacco use was more prevalent amongst individuals with schizophrenia (67.9%) and cannabis-induced disorders (97.3%) and lower in those with major depressive disorders (36.1%) and bipolar and related disorders (43.5%). Men were six times more likely to have ever used or currently use tobacco products in comparison to women. Also, those who had a salaried job or owned a business were over three times more likely to have ever used or currently use tobacco products compared with those receiving government social grants.Conclusions: The prevalence of tobacco use in this study was significantly higher than the general population in the Eastern Cape. Therefore, smoking prevention and cessation interventions targeted at the general population should target this often neglected sub-population in the region.

Adapun salah satu komponen konsep diri adalah self esteem perawat yang dapat digambarkan sebagai informasi dan keyakinan bahwa perawat memiliki tentang tugas, nilai, dan perilaku untuk pengembangan nilai-nilai profesional. Tujuan:  Penelitian ini bertujuan mengatahui perilaku assertive dan Self Esteem pada mahasiswa keperawatan  di STIKes Pamenang Pare Kediri pada tahun 2020. Methode: Penelitian  ini  adalah analitik digunakan  pendekatan  cross  sectional dengan spearman-rho. Populasi adalah mahasiswa keperawatan 119 dan sample 40 dengan teknik random sampling. Adapun Instrument penelitian ini kuesioner baku adalah Rathus Assertiveness Schedule (RAS) dan Rosenberg Self Esteem (RSE). Hasil: Hasil penelitian ini adalah terdapat  hubungan signifikan yang cukup kuat dengan nilai korelasi positive antara assertive dengan self-esteem pada mahasiswa di STIKes Pamenang Pare, di karenakan mahasiswa keperawatan yang berperilaku asertif tinggi cenderung mempunyai harga diri tinggi, sehingga sangat berkaitan erat dengan kelancaran selama menjalani masa studi di pendidikan keperawatan yang menghasilkan lulusan perawat yang kompeten dan profesional. Kesimpulan: Self esteem merupakan sejauh mana individu menilai dirinya yang memiliki kemampuan, keberartian, berharga, dan kompetensi yang dapat mempengaruhi perawat bertindak profesiona sangat berkaitan dengan perilaku asertive. Sehingga semenjak di pendidikan perlu di siapkan pengelolaan assertiveness yang efektif untuk peningkatan low self esteem pada mahasiswa keperawatan. Aims:  This aims of  research identified assertive behavior to self esteem in nursing students in Department of nursing Pamenang Health Institute Pare Kediri East Jawa in 2020. Methods: This study used analytic cross sectional approach with spearman-rho. The population nursing students were 119 and samples were  40 with random sampling techniques. This research the instruments were Rathus Assertiveness Schedule (RAS) and Rosenberg Self Esteem (RSE). Results: The results of this research was a significant and positive corelation between assertive and self-esteem in nursing students in Department of nursing Pamenang Health Institute Pare Kediri, because nursing students with high assertive category behavior tend to have high self-esteem category, so its were closely related to fluency while undergoing a period to study in nursing education that produces competent and professional nurse graduates. Conclusion: Self-esteem was the extent to which individuals assess themselves who had abilities, meaningfulness, worth, and competence that can influence nurses to act professionally were closely related to asertive behavior. So since in education it was necessary to prepare effective assertiveness management to increase low self esteem in nursing students. Keywords: students, nurses, assertiveness, self esteem

Background: Tobacco is a major risk factor for a number of diseases affecting all age groups. One person dies every six seconds due to tobacco use and up to half of current users will eventually die of a tobacco-related disease. Government of India has enacted cigarette and other tobacco products act (COTPA) in the year 2003 to control tobacco use. The objective of study was to estimate the level of compliance to selected sections (4 to 9) of COTPA (cigarette and other tobacco products – prohibition of advertisement and regulation of trade and commerce, production, supply and distribution) act, 2003 in Koppal district, Karnataka.Methods: The present study was a cross sectional study conducted as an independent evaluation of COTPA act 2003 in Koppal district as per National Tobacco Control Program guidelines. Cluster sampling technique was used for sample selection and sample consisted of 158 public places, 102 educational institutional, 87 shops/ sell points and 60 tobacco products. Data entry and analysis was done using microsoft office excel 2013.Results: The prevalence of compliance to section 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7, 8 and 9 of COTPA act 2003 in Koppal district were 80.3%, 96.5%, 98.9%, 64.8%, 53.3%, 63.3% and 50% respectively.Conclusions: Compliance level was poor especially in relation to display of health warnings on tobacco products which needs to be tackled through strict enforcement of the existing laws.

Background: Tobacco use is a major public health problem. The prevalence of tobacco use among men has been reported to be high (generally exceeding 50%) from almost all parts of India. “The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply, and Distribution) Act 2003”, which came into effect since 1st May 2004. Information on knowledge, attitudes, and practices of population regarding COTPA is necessary to effectively implement the legislation. Hence the present study was undertaken.Methods: The present study was a cross-sectional community-based survey carried out in urban slums of Nalgonda town. Data was collected using a structured schedule by interviewing 300 participants, aged above 15 years.Results: The current use of any tobacco was reported by 45.7% of the participants. Overall awareness of COTPA was 58.2%. Marital status, type of family, unemployment, Illiterates, lower SES, and age had a significant influence on tobacco use. Television (77.05%) was the major source of awareness regarding COTPA. The majority of smokers were aware of various sections of COTPA (>50%). About 34.8% of the participants had a favorable attitude towards COTPA. The positive attitude was more (53.7%) towards the display of health warnings on tobacco products among smokers. 11.2% had paid penalty for violation of the act and 32.4% have noticed a reduction in their habit to some extent.Conclusions: A concerted effort has to be made to increase the awareness of the act amongst the vulnerable population.
