China's renewed engagement with Africa is often framed as a form of imperialism, with the growing number of Chinese migrants on the continent seen as an exploitative presence. Such claims have generally been based on little evidence, and where more detailed empirical studies have emerged, they tend to emphasise the tensions and conflicts that have arisen. Our research on Chinese migrants in Ghana and Nigeria suggests that while there are concerns about Chinese competition in the informal retail sector and the treatment of local labour in Chinese enterprises, narratives of apparent tension and conflict are often much more nuanced than is generally recognised. Furthermore, more convivial and cooperative relations have also emerged and these have facilitated important opportunities for Africans to benefit from the Chinese presence. However, while the presence of Chinese migrants in African socio-economic life can be more integrated and mutually beneficial than is often assumed, the ability of African actors to benefit from this presence is highly uneven, placing the politics of class at the centre of any understanding of Sino-African encounters.

В статье рассмотрена миграция населения, в том числе ее национальный и половозрастной состав, основные причины миграции, проблемы трудовой миграции и ее последствия, основные характеристики данного процесса, интенсивность современных миграционных процессов в Кыргызстане, особенности местного рынка труда, гендерный аспект миграционных процессов. The article deals with the migration of the population, including its national and demographic composition, the main reasons of labour migration and its consequences, the main characteristics of this process, the intensity of contemporary migration processes in Kyrgyzstan, especially in the local labour market, the gender aspect of migration processes. Migration is considered as a complex process affecting many aspects of socio-economic life, directly influencing the demographic situation in the country. The statistical data of the existing situation in the sphere of migration. The analysis of the current legislation of the Kyrgyz Republic, regulating migration processes. A sociological analysis of the factors of integration of young generations into active economic life is based on a study of the values of young people in relation to employment and professional growth. The information society has two key parameters that influence the construction of the trajectory of educational, professional, labor or entrepreneurial activity — the significant role of knowledge in creating value and the digital space as a source of information and the place for individuals to fulfill themselves in society and the social and professional community. A theoretical analysis of labor socialization allows researchers to move on to the results of empirical studies carried out with the participation of authors in 2017 and 2019-2020. The data obtained are evaluative in nature and allow authors to draw conclusions about the influence of the media space on young people entering working age taking decisions on choosing a profession and a form of economic activity, planning employment and career growth.

This article examines the relationship between the economic activities of Chinese migrants in the wholesale and retail sector in Lesotho, and the larger structural framework. More specifically, it investigates this relationship with reference to the general debate on Chinese migrants in Africa. These themes locate Chinese migrants at the margins of the economy, assume some Chinese exceptionalism, and imply a kind of neocolonialism. The article demonstrates that Chinese migrants are, in fact, not operating at the margins of the economy, but have become a vital element of Lesotho's wholesale and retail sector. The analysis of the structural framework indicates that the economic activities of Chinese migrants are a reflection of existing structural constraints and opportunities rather than Chinese exceptionalism or neocolonialism. This in turn implies that future research would benefit from placing the interplay of Chinese migrants and the larger structural framework in respective African countries at the centre of analysis.

Examines the extent of low pay in Britain, first by estimating a Lorenz curve and, second, by using a logistic regression approach. Low pay is defined in terms of the first three deciles of the income distribution for all workers. The data are taken from the 1986 Social and Economic Life Survey of 6,110 individuals in six local labour markets using a matched employer‐employee sample. Gender is the most important variable but women, as men, can improve their relative positions by acquiring human capital. Variables inducing upward mobility are much the same – regardless of position in the wage structure.

China is facing the serious problem of ‘low-end locking’ in the global value chain as it becomes deeply integrated into world trade. Deciphering how to upgrade Chinese enterprises’ positions in the global value chain is crucial to China’s economic transformation and sustainable development. This study explores the feasibility of upgrading China’s global value chain from the perspective of financial constraints. Based on a theoretical framework, this study applies firm-level production data and trade data, using a documented method of measuring domestic value added at the firm level. Besides, we apply three methods to comprehensively measure the financial constraints faced by enterprises. In our study, we verify the findings of previous empirical studies that reducing financial constraints can significantly increase enterprises’ domestic value added, and this conclusion remains valid after considering various robustness tests. Our heterogeneity analysis indicates that easing financial constraints can significantly contribute to Chinese private enterprises’ upgrade in the global value chain, which could be related with “ownership discrimination” of Chinese banks. Finally, this study analyses the two mechanisms by which relaxing financial constraints could promote global value chain upgrading: (i) directly transfer enterprises’ trade mode from processing trade to general trade and (ii) allowing enterprises to climb up in the global value chain.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the factors influencing the enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementation success in Indian retail sector. Additionally, the study also addresses the relationship between factors that influence ERP implementation and the success of ERP implementation empirically. Strategic, Technological, People and Project management are the examined factors. Design/methodology/approach – Empirical data were collected through survey questionnaire from practitioner like project sponsors, project managers, implementation consultants and team members who were involved in ERP implementation in retail sector. Findings – The results of the study has empirically verified that Strategic, Technological, People and Project management factors are positively influencing ERP implementation success. All four hypotheses were supported by results of the study. Practical implications – This study will provide valuable insights to researchers, practicing managers and those who are planning to implement ERP in retail organization. Originality/value – Very few empirical studies have been performed to investigate the influencing factor of ERP implementation and types of relationships between factors that influence ERP implementation and the success of ERP implementation in Indian retail sector. This study examines how Strategic, Technological, People, and Project management factors are influencing ERP implementation success in retail sector of India. Therefore, the research can make a useful contribution.

ABSTRACT Purpose: The objective of this research was to identify which dimensions are related to the establishment of higher levels of digital maturity. Originality/value: There is little academic scientific literature on digital maturity in Brazil. This research will offer subsidies to companies regarding the different dimensions that need to be emphasized by managers in order to achieve a full and effective digital transformation. This information will be valuable to support the digital transformation process of these companies. The study fills a gap in the academic context related to the lack of more comprehensive empirical studies based on digital maturity. Design/methodology/approach: This study evaluated the relationship of eight dimensions of capacity (strategy, leadership, market, operational, people, culture, governance, and technology) with the development of digital maturity. This survey applied an electronic questionnaire to directors of the strategic level of Brazilian retail sector companies located in different regions of Brazil. At the end, a total of 260 valid questionnaires were obtained. The responses were analyzed using the Partial Least Squares (PLS) method. Findings: The research results showed that the strategy, market, operations, culture, and technology dimensions are those that are most related to the development of digital maturity.

This chapter focuses on the intersections of culture and consumption. It takes up recent investigations of consumption outside of sociology; sociological studies of consumption, outside the claimed territory of economic sociology; and consequent challenges to economic sociology. Following those three points, it reviews three different sites of consumption—households, ethnic–racial communities, and retail settings—where extensive research has recently occurred, with an eye to better integration between economic sociology and empirical studies of consumption. It argues that although cultural variation plays a significant part in consumption, it is a common mistake to suppose that consumption forms a warm cultural island in a frigid economic sea. Shared understandings and their representations—the components of culture—undergird all of economic life, from e-commerce to sweatshops.

Purpose Digitalization has transformed several industries during the past two decades. In this paper the authors focus on the retail sector, where new business models help retailers and suppliers meet the ever changing and demanding needs of retail shoppers. One example of this business model innovation is multi-sided digital platforms, which have become popular as they connect consumers with suppliers from around the world with a large ecosystem to support the retail platform. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of how multi-sided digital platforms are transforming the retail exchange logic and assess the implications and impact of these platform-based businesses on the retail sector, especially for business managers and consumers. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the authors employ literature review, conceptual analysis and qualitative case study methodology. The authors provide an overview of how the platform economy is affecting the retail sector through the illustration of four digital multi-sided platforms: Alibaba Group, Amazon.com, eBay and Rakuten Group, and what differentiates them from incumbent business models in retailing. Findings The findings suggest that platforms transform the transaction logic of retailing as they simply intermediate transactions between buyers and suppliers rather than handling the entire supply and logistics chain themselves. The authors highlight the role of consumer understanding and Big Data as one example of how multi-sided digital platforms differentiate from their non-platform competitors. Practical implications The paper highlights how incumbent retailers can compete against new forms of business, such as digital platforms, and the authors demonstrate some of the managerial capabilities needed to remain relevant amidst this new digital competition. Originality/value Very little empirical studies in marketing and retail literature have focused on multi-sided digital platforms and their business models. The present study fills this gap with an overview of how multi-sided digital platforms transform the retail sector.

Islam regulates economic life for the benefit of all. Waqf can be a solution in creating mutual benefit in society. This study aims to analyze the comparison between the practice of waqf for both Muslims and non-Muslims. This study uses qualitative methods. Samples in this study are the Islamic Hospital of endowments and the Gates Foundation. Data were analyzed using descriptive-analytical methods. The results show that the Gates Foundation and UNISMA use funds from their business management to distribute to the public. If UNISMA distributes waqf funds for business development and to achieve goodness, the gates foundation is entirely donated to the public. The difference in the company's financial scale is this division.
