The quality of products from the micro and small enterprise sector is affected by both the entrepreneur’s and enterprise’s attributes. This paper presents and discusses findings of a study that was designed to investigate experimentally the relationship between the quality of arc in the Small Scale Metalwork sub-sector and the combined effect of the artisan’s education level and business location. A total of 36 artisans with secondary education and 36 artisans with primary education consisting of formally (35) and informally (37) trained artisans from urban (29) and rural (43) areas participated in the evaluation. A mild steel product was fabricated by each participating artisan, assessed and scores awarded based on the quality of arc welding. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to show any variation in the quality of arc welding; comparisons of means using the Least Significant Difference (LSD) at the alpha level of 5% were done to determine which pairs of artisans affected quality significantly. The study found out that artisans with secondary education performed better than those with primary education. The study also found out that artisans from urban areas performed better those from rural areas. The findings of this study provide evidence that higher level of education and urban location of business can improve product quality.

success of an integrate agribusiness system of a commodity must be followed by the increase of farmers’ bargain position, especially the small scale agribusiness runs by farmers. Otherwise, farmer will continue to be marginalized, and sustainable production is hard to be achieved. Farmer organization in Indonesia is relatively has weak position and cannot improve farmers’ bargain position since it is still in social institution form (i.e. farmer group), and yet become a socio-economic institution (cooperative). In many countries, farmers’ cooperative not only improves the production, productivity and product quality, but also lead to increase in welfare and life quality of its members. This study specifically aimed to develop corn farmer co-operative in Gorontalo Province. SWOT analysis was being used to formulate the strategy, followed by strategy mapping in road-map as guidance for local government to develop corn farmer co-operative that suitable with its character.Keyword: agribusiness, corn, farmer group, farmer co-operative, Gorontalo.

AbstractThe management of school exam based on national standar (SENS) at upper secondary education level which includes preparation, implementation, post-implementation, and preparing teacher competency improvement in the compilation of SENS questions. This study uses a qualitative approach, with the technique of collecting data used is a focus group discussion. This research is done in three provinces is.c.q. Banten, West Nusa Tenggara, and North Maluku. This research results is the preparation phase of SENS was running smoothly but there are is constrained on the time of distribution, printing, and printing cost. Implementation of SENS was running smoothly and on schedule, questions compiled and assembled by education office. At post implementation, schools correction of SENS using scaners or manually. Not all schools give SENS correction results to the education office, so it feels the difficulty to map the quality of education based on SENS results. Besides that, the compilation of SENS questions at the secondary education level carried out by teachers namely discussion of subject teacher have not yet adequate quality. The conclusion is that implementation of 2017 SENS was running smoothly, eventhough there are some constraints.

The production of tchapalo remains more or less an empirical process. For the improvement of the product quality, there is a need of more knowledge on this traditional process and the beer characteristics. The alcoholic fermentation is one of the most steps which most determines the quality of the beer. In this study, the characteristics of the traditional starter and the evolution of temperature, ethanol, sugars and organic acids were assessed at small-scale production during alcoholic fermentation of tchapalo. Brewers used traditional starter at the rate of 0.76-0.88 % when it was dried or at 2.38 % when it was not. When the wort was at 36.6-39.3 °C, the starter was added to initiate the fermentation. Temperature decreased to 34.6-36.5 °C at the end of the fermentation which was concluded after 7.6 h to 8.4 h. Sugars were consumed during the fermentation but it remained 12.9 to 16.57 g/L of reducing sugars and 8.02 to 9.12 °Brix of TSS in the final product. Ethanol content increased from 0.02-0.35 % (v/v) in the wort to 3.5-4.59 % in the beer. The oxalic, citric, tartaric, malic, lactic, fumaric and propionic acids were found in the wort and in tchapalo and increased or decreased during fermentation differently from one site to another. But, the acetic acid was not always detected in both the wort and the beer.

The quality of water in four streams of Cauvery River in Mandya District, where many small scale sugar and brewery distilleries are located, was analysed. Sampling was carried out from four streams designated as station 1 (upstream of effluent discharge point), station 2 (effluent discharge point) and station 3 (downstream of effluent discharge) station 4 (fresh water stream) to assess the impact of effluent on the water quality. The river water composition is increasingly dominated by Na and Cl in the downstream region of the river, indicating the influence of airborne salts with oceanic affinities. Significant spatial variation was observed in water level, transparency, turbidity, depth, dissolved oxygen, colour, biochemical oxygen demand, nitrate, nitrite and total hydrocarbon among the physiochemical parameters of the study stations. Aposterioritest revealed that station 2 & 3 were the cause of the significant difference. The dissolved oxygen level in stations 2 & 3 was lower than 5.0mg/L, which is recommended minimum allowable limit for aquatic life. About 7 rotifer species in large amount recorded in this study were encountered in station 1, 7 in station 2 & 3 while 12 species in station 4. The overall density of rotifers in the four stations was significantly different. Aposterioricomparison revealed that station 2 & 3 are the cause of the significant difference. The Branchionus angularis rotifers, which dominated the community, were found to tolerate the effluent effect in station 2&3, and showed remarkable recovery in the downstream station 4. Low faunal diversity and negative impact on the biotic and abiotic environment was experienced in station 2 & 3 throughout the duration of sampling because of the brewery effluent discharged directly into these two Streams.

A small scale convective dryer with tumbling mechanism was specially constructed for drying grated coconut. This new drying mechanism was evaluated in term of drying behaviour and colour quality of the final product. Three main factors that involved were hot air temperature, rotational speed (rpm) and air velocity. Every combined parameter of a sample was compared to each other and also with freshly grated coconut. It was found that the combination of 60°C, 6 rpm and 4.31 ms-1 had the shortest drying time as well as the highest drying rate among other combinations. In contrast, combination factors of 50° C, 3 rpm and 2.06 ms-1 had the lowest drying rate. Three main factors; temperature, rotational speed and air velocity were significantly contributed to the response of drying time as (p<0.05). Drying rate also increased with increase in temperature, rotational speed and air velocity. In term of colour analysis (L*, a*, b*), there was a significant difference among dried grated coconut samples. Nevertheless, sample 60˚C, 3 rpm and 4.31 ms-1 and 50˚C, 3 rpm and 4.31 ms-1 showed no significant different (p>0.05) in lightness when compared to freshly grated coconut hence excellent in retaining its original appearance. On top of that, sample (60˚C, 3 rpm and 4.31 ms-1 ) also achieved considerable drying rate with an acceptable drying time of 135 mins.
