Abstract Global warming and soil salinity are major constraints threat speared of Mediterranean endogenous flora, however little is known about the effect of these phenomena on seed germination patterns, particularly in Algeria. Germination test under laboratory controlled conditions had been carried out using seeds of Marrubium vulgare, Sideritis incana and Stachys ocymastrum. Seeds were submitted at temperatures of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 °C, after that and within optimum temperatures, various sodium chloride (NaCl) concentrations of 0, 34, 68, 102 and 136 mM were set to evaluated salinity effect. Germination was more satisfactory on temperatures ranged between 15 and 25 °C. Whereas, increased or decreased temperatures from the optimum bring to germination fall. High seed germination capacity had been showed on non-saline solution. While, germination had depressed by enhanced NaCl solution up to 136 Mm in which Final Germination Percentage are either significantly decreased (for S. ocymastrum seeds 18% germination) or absolutely inhibited (for M. vulgare and S. incana seeds), as well Initial Germination Day are delayed. Overall, data showed that germination patterns response varies among species, given that seed germination is remarkably limited by extremes temperatures and salinity.

ABSTRACT: The objective of the following research was to investigate the physiological responses of two bahiagrass genotypes (Paspalum notatum Flügge) submitted to water restriction, induced by polyethylene glycol (PEG6000), during seed germination. Seeds of cv. Pensacola (diploid) and Bagual ecotype (tetraploid) were placed on paper moistened with osmotic solutions at potentials of 0.0; -0.1; -0.2 and -0.3 MPa. Composed of two subsamples of 100 seeds and four experimental units per treatment, the germination test was conducted in a germination chamber under alternating temperatures of 30 °C (8 hours) and 20 °C (16 hours), with presence of light during the higher temperature. Final germination percentage and germination speed index of the seeds, as well as early growth, activity and expression of antioxidant enzymes of seedlings were evaluated. The water restriction induced by PEG6000 reduced the percentage of germination in Pensacola (from 74% to 59%) and Bagual (34% to 10%). For the latter, the evaluation of seedlings showed higher dry mass in relation to cv. Pensacola (1.7 times higher in root and 1.6 times in shoot). In response to moderate water restriction, the genotypes showed increases in root growth (1.7 times higher in -0.1 compared to 0.0 MPa), both in expression and enzymatic activity (superoxide dismutase and catalase).

Six isolates ofBotrytis cinereawere isolated from leaves and stems of different tomato varieties taken from four areas in the northwest of Algeria where tomato is mostly grown in greenhouses and high tunnels. The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of two salts, NaCl and CaCl2, on three stages ofBotrytis cinerea’slife cycle. All isolates tested were stimulated in 50 to 150 ppm; NaCl was the most effective treatment to increase mycelial growth at two tested concentrations. However, at 300 ppm concentration, CaCl2completely inhibited the growth of mycelium; they reach 34.78% for the isolate TR46 and 26.72% for isolate F27. The sodium and calcium salts stimulated conidia production in liquid culture. We noticed that the effect of calcium chloride on sporulation was average while sodium chloride. In the medium containing 50 ppm, calcium chloride and sodium chloride increased the germination capacity of most isolates compared with the control. Other calcium salts, at 100 or 300 ppm, decreased the germination percentage of the conidia. With the exception of sodium salts, the inhibitions of germination reduce at 150 or 300 compared with the control. Conidial germination was slightly inhibited by sodium chloride only when the concentration was over 300 ppm.

AbstractThe objective of this study was to evaluate the germination of Australian cedar seeds (Toona ciliata M. Roem) in three different substrates and two photoperiods and evaluate the effect of salt stress with sodium chloride (NaCl) on the viability and vigor of seeds, conducting two experiments. The first experiment was conducted in a constant temperature room at 25 C and two light regimes 12h 24h white light; and three substrates: sand, between paper and on paper. Evaluations were performed on the seventhand twenty-first day after sowing. Results were expressed as percentage of Normal Seedlings, Abnormal Seedlings and Dead Seeds, Number of True Leaves, Fresh, Dry Matter, Seedling Length and Root. The second experiment used constant 25 C and photoperiod of 12 hours light. With treatments T1 (0mM: distilled water); 25mMNaCl T2; T3 50mMNaCl; T4 and T5 100mMNaCl 75mMNaCl. We evaluated PCG, G, IVG, CP, CR. The photoperiod of 24h light, does not influence the final seed germination and the use of paper on substrate provided the highest percentage of germinated seeds. As to the effect of salt stress, the concentration of 50mMsalt, caused damage to the development of seedlings.ResumoPadronização do teste de germinação e resposta ao estresse salino por NaCl em sementes de Toona ciliata. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a germinação de sementes de cedro australiano (Toona ciliata M. Roem) em três substratos com dois fotoperíodos e avaliar o efeito do estresse salino com cloreto de sódio (NaCl) na viabilidade e vigor de sementes. O experimento I foi conduzido em ambiente com temperatura constante a 25 ºC e dois regimes de luminosidade, 12h de 24h de luz branca; três substratos: areia, entre papel e sobre papel. As avaliações foram realizadas no sétimo e vigésimo primeiro dia após a semeadura. Os resultados expressos em porcentagem de Plântulas Normais, Plântulas Anormais e Sementes Mortas, número de Folhas Verdadeiras, Massa Fresca, Massa Seca, Comprimento de Plântula e Raiz. O experimento II utilizou temperatura constante a 25 ºC e fotoperíodo de 12 horas luz. Com os tratamentos T1 (0 mM: água destilada); T2 25 mMNaCl; T3 50 mMNaCl; T4 75 mMNaCl e T5 100 mMNaCl. Avaliando-se PCG, G, IVG, CP e CR. O fotoperíodo de 24h de luz, não influencia na germinação e o uso do substrato sobre papel proporcionou a maior germinação. Quanto ao efeito do estresse salino, a concentração de 20 mM de sal, prejudicou o desenvolvimento das plântulas.Palavras-chave: Sementes florestais; análise de sementes, vigor, salinidade.

This experiment was aimed to reveal the effect of seed physical scarification and various growing mediaon vigor of Moringa oleifera. This study was conducted in greenhouse and consisted of two phases ofexperiment; first was studied the effect of physical scarification on seed germination of M. oleifera and thesecond was studied the effect of seed physical scarification and various sub optimum growing media onvigor of M. oleifera. The germination test was arranged in randomized completely design with 4 treatmentsthat were P0 = non scarification, P1 = one side scarification, P2 = two sides scarification, and P3 = full sidescarification. The variables measured were germination percentage (%) and seedling dry weight (g/plant).The second study was arranged in a factorial randomized completely design with the four treatments ofscarification (P0, P1, P2 and P3) over six growing media (sands, bricks, bricks and sands mixture, bricksand soils mixture, soils and sands mixture, and soils). The variables observed were petioles number, plantheight (cm/plant), and plant dry weight (g/plant). The scarification was significantly affect (P<0.05) thegermination percentage and seedling dry weight. Scarification and growing media also affected the vigorof M. oleifera significantly (P<0.05). Two side seed scarification improve the germination and seedling dryweight instead of control. Combination of scarification in two sides and growing media of soils and sandsmixture given the highest vigor of M. oleifera reflected on petioles number, plant height, and plant dry weight. Abstract: The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of priming on the germination of Eucalyptus urophylla and of hybrid E. urophylla × E. grandis seeds under salt stress. Two osmotic potentials (-1.0 and -1.5 MPa) were tested, using PEG 6000 for 1 and 3 days. After priming, seeds were germinated under salt stress in a NaCl solution at 0.0 (control), -0.5, -0.75 and -1.0 MPa potentials, at 25 °C. Seed germination and germination speed index decreased as the water potential of the germination medium decreased. However, E. urophylla was more tolerant to salt stress; it showed a higher germination percentage under all tested potentials, when compared to the hybrid. The osmotic conditioning at -1.0 MPa for three days was more effective when E. urophylla x E. grandis was germinated in a salt solution at -1.0 MPa, indicating that this treatment was more effective in inducing tolerance to salt stress.

The objectives of this work were to characterize fruits and seeds and evaluate seed germination and seedling vigor from fifteen parent plants of Parkia gigantocarpa Ducke. The fresh weight, length, width, and thickness of fruits and seeds were determined. The germination was tested in a sand substrate, with four replications of 25 seeds per treatment (parent plants). The number of days for emergence, emergence percentage, emergence speed index, germination percentage, and seedling dry weight were evaluated. The fruits presented means for fresh weight, length, width, and thickness of 115.0 g; 621.3 mm; 60.8 mm, and 9.8 mm, respectively. The seeds presented means for fresh weight, length, width, and thickness of 1.1 g, 22.8 mm, 11.2 mm, and 7.0 mm, respectively. The emergence was fast and uniform, which occurred from the fifth to the sixth day after seeding, reaching 91% germination for the parent HB9, but not differing from the parents HB2, HB3, and HB6. The seedlings from the parents HB2, HB3, HB6, and HB9 were more vigorous due to their higher dry matter accumulation. The results found showed that, even belonging to the same species, P. gigantocarpa seeds from different parent plants present variability in biometric characteristics of fruits and seeds. The seed collected from different parent plants showed differences in germination capacity and seedling vigor.

The effects of storage time and exogenous gibberellic acid on lychee seeds germination were studied. The seeds were removed from ripe fruits, washed, dried, stored at 8°C for 0, 15 and 30 days, and soaked during 24 hours in water and GA3 at 50, 100 and 200 mg.L-1 solutions. As the storage period increased, the germination capacity was lost, and the seeds had a short germinability after 30-day storage period. Gibberellic acid had not significant effect on enhancing both the germination percentage and rate.

Aim. The purpose of the work is to assess the resistance of highly decorative plants of the native flora to a high level of salinity and the content of zinc, lead and cadmium for landscaping urban and roadside areas. Methods. We used seed germination under laboratory conditions with soaking in solutions of sodium chloride and salts of zinc, lead and cadmium, as well as the method of in vitro cell selection to increase resistance to salinity of Verbascum nigrum L. Results. The resistance of 7 species of highly decorative plants, representatives of the autochthonous flora of Belarus, to increasing concentrations of lead, zinc and cadmium salts was assessed. Germination capacity, length and morphology of roots, length of seedlings during germination of seeds of Betonica officinalis L., Centaurea jacea L., Verbascum nigrum, Knautia arvensis (L.) Coult., Galium verum L., Anthemis tinctoria L., Anthemis arvensis L., Viscaria vulgaris Bernh., Achillea millefolium L. in the presence of sodium chloride are shown. It has been shown that the in vitro cell selection method is promising for the selection of resistant lines of Verbascum nigrum. Conclusions. The presence of lead, zinc and cadmium salts had a significant effect on the average length of the root, hypocotyl, and cotyledonous leaves, as well as the germination capacity of highly decorative species of autochthonous flora. The most resistant to salinity were yarrow (Achillea millefolium), brown knapweed (Centaurea jacea) and black mullein (Verbascum nigrum). Lines of Verbascum nigrum, capable of growing in vitro at a sodium chloride concentration of 5 g/L, were selected. Keywords: salinity, heavy metals, seed germination, highly decorative species.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different water contents achieved by Annona emarginata (Schltdl.) H. Rainer seeds during immersion in GA3 solutions, in variation of soluble sugars levels and germination. Seeds with 10% of initial water content were submitted to imbibition in GA3 solutions with concentrations of 0; 250; 500; 750 and 1000 mg L-1 and when they reached the water content of 15%, 20%, 25%, 30% and 35%, the quantification of soluble sugars levels and germination test were performed. Seeds immersed up to they reach 15% of water with GA3 and immersed up to the water acquisition of 20% without GA3, presented higher soluble sugars levels and germination percentage, which were decreased when the seeds reached 30% and 35% of water, independently of the presence of the plant growth regulator. It was conclude that different water contents reached by the seeds in immersion treatments with GA3 affect the soluble sugars levels and germination percentage of Annona emarginata seeds. Thus, in treatments with Annona emarginata, the seeds must remain immersed in water without GA3 up to they reach 20% of water, as higher water contents (35%) reduce the soluble sugars levels and the seed germination percentage.

Madagascar is home to a diversity of aquatic grasses. One of these is a rare rice relative, Leersia perrieri (known as Ahitsiriry or Tsingirifiry in the Malagasy language), which is found in a restricted area around the Mahajanga wetlands. A germination test was carried out on two types of local substrate and a control with randomised selected seeds. Seed germination on the control and clay substrates reached 50% while on the organic substrate germination failed to reach 40% during 22 days of observation. The GLM analysis of the final germination showed significant differences between the three treatments. The germination percentage (GP%) was higher in the control and significantly decreased on the clay and organic substrates. Our results help explains our field observations where L. perrieri tends to form monodominant stands on clay substrate, and dispersed multispecies assemblages with fewer individuals on organic soils. This work will be of direct benefit to our panned conservation activities and eventually germplasm availability for crop improvement research.
