This article presents the results of the research in which the perception of the quality of journalistic texts by newsroom members of Russian all-news and news/talk radio stations were studied. Journalists are more critical (and sometimes even skeptical) in determining the quality of materials produced independently, while chief editors, on the contrary, consider their subordinates' media texts to be "good". Women journalists assess the quality of media texts produced much higher than their male counterparts. Employees aged above 40 are often more skeptical about the quality of their own texts than their younger colleagues. In the article we can see the difference of the media text perception between journalists that produced the content and their managers, gender and age differences of the respondents have also been taken into consideration. The authors of the article identified that the evaluations of media texts by various groups of journalists can sometimes be significantly different. As the conclusions of the research are debatable, the results of the study need verification. The results of this research are also placed against data of the other study, titled “Structure of the work of a Russian journalist” by researchers of the Faculty of Journalism of Lomonosov Moscow State University (A.Vyrkovsky, A.Vartanov, M.Galkina, A.Kolesnichenko, A.Obraztsova), carried out in 2014–2016. The research is based on a survey of correspondents and editors of socio-political printed and online media of the Russian Federation (the media of the federal level and those ones of million-plus cities).

Previous studies that looked at the quality of media cultures that emerged in the process of democratisation in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) have largely missed the role these cultures play in maintaining gender and age inequalities in the media. This ethnography fills this gap. Through the example of one public service broadcaster, Telewizja Polska (TVP), the quality of the post-communist media culture is examined. The article argues that television work in Poland is carried out under the combined pressure from political actors, economic forces and patriarchal ideology, resulting in a weak media autonomy that characterises the CEE region overall. The theoretical framework of field theory is used to demonstrate this link.

Media sector, in Nepal, has been vibrant and it is flourishing across all media outlets with about 1,000 newspapers, 600 radio stations, about five dozen television channels and more than 2,200 online news portals currently in operation across the country. Despite such an impressive figure, the reluctance of media houses to spend on embracing the key dimensions of gender sensitivity including professional safety of women journalists at workplace has had a dropping effect on the entire sector. Women remain cut out of the key decision-making levels in media. Media houses do not have any comprehensive prevention, support, complaints, and redress system with regards to sexual harassment and bullying in the workplace. This chapter assesses the state of gender sensitivity in newsrooms of Nepal with reference to professional safety of women journalists. Observations indicate that media houses should give due priority to professional safety of women journalists.

By using information sources from the opponent’s side, the media can introduce alternative viewpoints and broaden the discussion on the conflict. One important information source that has received little attention in research is the other side’s media reports. This study explores the practice of inter-media citations by analyzing Israeli and Palestinian news reports published over a span of 10 years. Based on a computerized quantitative analysis of 235,340 media texts, the authors show how the weaker (Palestinian) side relies more heavily on the media of the stronger side (Israel) than vice versa. During escalations or negotiations, the rate of use of inter-media citations is significantly higher than during routine periods. Furthermore, two main characteristics of a media source make it more likely to be cited: political agenda and accessibility. The authors discuss the factors shaping the phenomenon of inter-media citations and the implications of this practice for conflict coverage.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the state of the modern newspaper style. The author notes that the theory of newspaper style was developed in the 60s of the last century and since then has undergone a number of changes that have not received sufficient coverage in linguistics. Attention is paid to the changes in the modern newspaper style, among which one can single out the strengthening of emotionality and dialogue. It is emphasized that these features are generally characteristic of media texts and, correspondingly, newspaper-style texts included in the media space. According to the presented research results, these tendencies are realized in newspaper-style texts through the use of colloquial vocabulary, repetition, quotation and question in the narrative (or rhetorical question), word play. It is shown that, at the same time, the majority of news reports (81 %), which constitute the core of the newspaper style and most clearly reflect its features, retain the key style characteristics: the prevalence of the message function, conciseness, brevity, the desire for emotionless and non-judgmental presentation. It seems that the statements about the “blurring” and disappearance of the newspaper style are premature and are caused by its evolution and dynamics.

The article presents the outcomes of studying the transformation of audiovisual content in a new technological environment, which is one of the stages of the research project conducted by the Department of Television and Radio Broadcasting of the Journalism Department of Lomonosov Moscow State University. This stage held in July 2019 aims to identify the technological features of the work of the cultural and educational TV channel portals – “Russia K” (domestic channel) and ARTE (French-German channel). Both “Russia K” and ARTE are important media players that have been setting trends in their field for more than 10 years. The reason for comparing these channels was their thematic focus and a certain similarity of projects. The TV channel “Russia K” is the only non-for-profit channel dedicated to the cultural and educational topics in R SMAI, and ARTE TV channel is one of the most popular media specialized in this subject in Europe. During this stage the total amount of analyzed materials is 251 (145 publications on the “Russia K” and 106 on ARTE websites). The analysis of materials published on the Internet is based on following criteria: the number of materials, the nature of the content (broadcast / special), thematic and genre. The analysis of the amount of materials enables tracing the frequency of publication of new articles; data on the nature of the content helps to conclude which materials on the sites are more – on-air or special. Defining thematic and genre originality provides a complete picture of the content being posted. The author concludes that nowadays the Internet versions of the channels have their own faces but are inseparably bound with their television counterparts. The website of the TV channel “Russia K” is a vibrant media with recognizable style and creative presentation. However, in order to strengthen its position, the editors of the site should increase the number of copyright off-air materials and use new interactive genres (tests, quizzes, etc.).The site of the ARTE channel fits into the modern digital space while maintaining the classic presentation. Since most ARTE channel programs are timeless, they correlate very well with the consumer nature of the Internet and the need for educational content. Documentary films – the most common form of ARTE channel programs is in great demand by the audience in the digital environment that wants to quickly learn something important in a simple, vivid and understandable form. The difference between the on-air and non-air versions is largely exaggerated, because sites and channels do not compete with each other but are adjacent and complement each other. Websites enable access to the channel’s content anytime, anywhere, by selecting the desired program. Sites act not only as electronic repositories but also as individual units in the media world providing unique information.

Celebrity has become a defining characteristic of our mediatized societies. It is ever-present in the news and entertainment industry boosted by formats such as reality TV, DIY (do it yourself) websites, talk radio and so on. ‘The Demotic Turn’ was coined by Graeme Turner in Understanding Celebrity as a means of defining the expanding growth of ‘ordinary’ while they modify themselves into the content of media through various reality shows, several DIY platforms, and widely, via ‘celebrification.’ It is generally defined as the process by which ordinary people or public figures are transformed into celebrities; for instance, film stars, public figures, celebrity politicians. This transformation from ordinary person to celebrity can be seen as a media ritual that both confirms this separation and legitimates the ‘myth of the media centre’, or the myth that the media are the essential gatekeepers to the imagined society’s centre. Celebrities are manufactured by the celebrity industry which produced and further help to sell other commodities and this can’t be equated with the democratization. This whole process of formation of celebrity leads to his conversion into ‘celetoid’ or a short-lived public figure. This paper tries to examine the role which this mass-mediated fame plays within the construction of cultural identities.

This article analyses the issue of how the “post-socialist" civil society of the former GDR can be reconstructed to reduce dependence of the media on the state and on future private ownership, thereby maximising freedom of communication. The media had a powerful impact on the transitional phase following reunification. Before 1989 West German television and radio stations were "windows to the West". After reunification East Germans preferred to have their own newspapers, to watch their own television programmes or to listen to their own radio programmes. There has been some criticism about the quality of the media, but the majority of the contemporary audience is satisfied now. To meet the expectations of their audience the journalists themselves have learned to devote special attention to East German problems. One problem of concern is media concentration. Privatisation entails the danger that monopolising trends in mass media, especially in newspaper publishing, will continue in the new East German Lánder. Deregulation and quality programming offer an opportunity for a major breakthrough and new forms of media organisation and management. The period of acclimatisation following the reunification has, however, been too short for the mass media. Nevertheless, owing to specific characteristics of reunification, the transition East Germans have had to make has been largely successful.
