The research aimed to determine the effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal isolates from Central Kalimantan peat swamp forest on the growth of sengon (Falcataria moluccana (Miq) Barneby & Grimes). Arbuscular mycorrhizal isolates consisted of Glomus sp.2 (blackish brown) & Glomus sp.3 (dark brown) isolated from the peatland of Central Kalimantan. The mycorrhizal colonization was observed and plant growth parameters were measured for five months. The design used in this research was a complete randomized design and there were 6 treatments including Glo1S2 (Glomus sp.2, 2 spores), Glo1S4 (Glomus sp.2, 4 spores), Glo2S2 (Glomus sp.3, 2 spores), Glo2S4 (Glomus sp.3, 4 spores), control I and control II. The result showed that arbuscular mycorrhiza colonization significantly different between the treatments of inoculation compared with control. Glo2S4 treatment gave a significant effect on the growth of sengon in terms of plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, root length and total biomass. Keywords: AMF, spore, Glomus, Kalimantan

Gerunggang (Cratoxylon arborescens) is a potential peat swamp species to be developed as alternative pulp material. However, plantation on the degraded peat swamp forest are facing constraints such as acidic soil reaction. Thus, planting gerunggang on degraded peat swamp forest resulted in low survival rate and slow plant’s growth. Soil microbe such as arbuscular mycorrhiza has potential to increase plant’s growth and protecting plants from critical growth condition. Nevertheless, this potential has not been explored further. The objective of this research is to analyze the growth performance of gerunggang after inoculated with indigenous arbuscular mycorrhiza spores in the nursery. The arbuscular mycorrhiza spores were collected from degraded peat swamp forest of Central Kalimantan. The design arranged in this study was complete randomized (CRD) with 5 treatments (Control, Glomus sp.1, Glomus sp.2, Glomus sp.5 and Gigaspora sp.4.) and 50 replications. The number of seedling tested were 250. The result showed that arbuscular mycorrhiza innoculation was significant for gerunggang on the height growth (F4,303=5,767; p=0,00<0,05), number of leaves (F4,303= 3,475; p=0,009<0,05) and root colonization (F4,10 =7,619; p=0,004<0,05) with age of 3 months under nursery condition. Total unit perlakuan terdapat 250 tanaman. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa inokulasi mikoriza arbuskula berbeda nyata untuk pertumbuhan tinggi gerunggang (F4,303=5,767; p=0,00<0,05), jumlah daun (F4,303= 3,475; p=0,009<0,05) dan kolonisasi akar (F4,10 =7,619; p=0,004<0,05) pada umur 3 bulan di persemaian.

This study evaluated the synergism between several P-solubilizing fungi isolates and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi to improve clover ( Trifolium pratense) growth in the presence of Araxá apatite. Clover was sown directly in plastic pots with 300g of sterilized washed sand, vermiculite and sepiolite 1:1:1 (v:v:v) as substrate, and grown in a controlled environment chamber. The substrate was fertilized with 3 g L-1 of Araxá apatite. A completely randomized design, in 8×2 factorial scheme (eight P-solubilizing fungi treatments with or without arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi)and four replicates were used. The P-solubilizing fungi treatments consisted of five Brazilian P-solubilizing fungi isolates (PSF 7, 9, 20, 21 and 22), two Spanish isolates ( Aspergillus niger and the yeast Yarowia lipolytica) and control (non-inoculated treatment). The greatest clover growth rate was recorded when Aspergillus niger and PSF 21 were co-inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Aspergillus niger, PSF 7 and PSF 21 were the most effective isolates on increasing clover growth in the presence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Greater mycorrhizal colonization resulted in greater clover growth rate in most PSF treatments. PSF 7 was the best isolate to improve the establishment of mycorrhizal and rhizobia symbiosis.

ABSTRACT: Weeds reduce the productive potential of crops. Plants of the Ipomoea genus, besides competing for water, light, space and nutrients, create problems in crop harvests due to their volatile stems. The objective of this work was to evaluate the growth and development of five Ipomoea species. For such, Ipomoea grandifolia, Ipomoea hederifolia, Ipomoea nil, Ipomoea purpurea and Ipomoea quamoclit plants were analyzed during the summer and winter season. Five destructive and periodic growth evaluations were carried out for each study, where leaf number, leaves, stems, roots and the total biomass were analyzed. Phenological stages of the plant development were also evaluated for emergence, flowering and maturation sub-periods by degree-days, totalizing five treatments, conducted in a completely randomized design with four replicates. The phenology averages were analyzed according to the Hess scale, and the growth data through nonlinear regressions. I. quamoclit and I. grandifolia obtained the highest number of leaves in the summer and the winter, respectively. I. nil obtained greater accumulation of leaf and stem dry biomass in both seasons. I. grandifolia obtained greater root development in both periods. I. quamoclit presented reduced cycle times when compared to the other species, especially I. hederifolia and I. grandifolia, which presented larger cycles. Based on the results, I. grandifolia probably shows greater interference with agricultural crops due to high root growth, high leaf production and longer cycle. Shorter-cycle species, such as I. quamoclit, when present, should require shorter residual control periods.

Background and Objective: Unproductive soil has been a major problem to farmers, recent interest in the use of a stable organic manure (biochar) as soil amendment and poultry manure to increase soil fertility is also increasing. Hence, the experiment was conducted to assess the condition of poultry manure and biochar on the growth and yield of tomato. Materials and Methods: A greenhouse experiment was conducted at the Federal College of Forestry Ibadan, using polyethylene bag with 5 kg soil collected at two (2) soils depths, 0-15 cm and 15-30 cm depth at the botanical garden, Federal College of Forestry Ibadan. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design (CRD) with four replicates. The treatments used were poultry manure (5t/ha), biochar (10t/ha), mixture of poultry manure and biochar (1:1) and control (no amendment). The tomato seeds (UC82B) were sourced from NIHORT, Ibadan and raised in a germination basket. Data were collected weekly on plant height, collar diameter and number of leaves, 50% days to flowering and yield of tomato plants from two weeks after transplanting (WAT). Data collected were analyzed statistically using ANOVA while means were separated using LSD (p<0.05) where applicable. Results: In 0-15 cm soil, the growth variables (plant height, number of leaves and collar diameter) increased with various treatments used. The highest tomato height was observed with the application of biochar (10t/ha). All the treatments applied affected the number of tomato leaves at all weeks after transplanting (WAT) with poultry manure 5t/ha having the highest number of leaves at 7WAT, while collar diameter was significantly affected by various treatments from 2 to 5 WAT, with the mixture of P.M + BIO (1:1) recording the highest value and the control plot recorded the least values in all weeks. However, in 15-30 cm soil, there was  significant difference in the number of leaves of tomato among all the amended soil from 5 to 7 WAT, the highest tomato leaves were obtained when the soil was amended with poultry manure (5t/ha) and can be compared with other treatments. Interaction of poultry manure and biochar(1:1) and poultry manure 5 t/ha resulted in highest height of tomato plant from 3-7 WAT as compared to the control that had the least value but were not significantly different from the sole application of  biochar 10t/ha. Interaction of poultry manure + biochar (1:1) and poultry manure (5t/ha) gave the highest tomato flowering and fruits. Conclusion: Based on this result, biochar and poultry manure when added to soil, boosted the mineralization of the soil after amendment.

Pulai (Alstonia scholaris) is a fast growing local species that can be used rehabilitation activities on peat swamp forest. This study aims to obtain information application the response of growth and quality of pulai seedlings to wood vinegar and shade. The research was carried out at orchid exsitu observation site stock  and community service and in the silvicultural laboratory of Faculty of Forestry. This study applied an experimental method with a split plot design with a complete randomized design (CRD). The treatment consisted of two factors,“shading” as the main factor and kind of  organic vinegar as  sub  factor. The results obtained were based on observations 12 weeks after planting, the growth percentage of pulai seedlings for the 100%, while ofthen variables in this study had no effect. The main factor is organic fertilizer with 2 levels: chemical fertilizer and wood vinegar, while the shade factor is a main factor that less interest. Results showed that the response of height growth was significantly higher 13.0% to chemical fertilizer than wood vinegar when planted in a shadeless condition. However, if planted in conditions with a shade of 60%, the response was no different. The response of leaves growth to fertilizer is significant when planted under different shade conditions. In the condition without shade, the response of leaves is 11.8% higher compared to wood vinegar. Conversely, in condition with shading 60%, the response  the number of leaves growth on wood vinegar was 13.0% higher than that of chemical fertilizer. In this study, the concentration of wood vinegar as much as 4% was not effective enough to increase the enhance  of pulai seedlings.Keywoards: Organic vinegar, pulai seedlings, shade

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the response of different concentrations of a fungal consortium on the growth and yield of Cenchrus purpureus ecotypes under storm conditions.Design/Methodology/Approach: An experiment was established under a completely randomized design with a 9X2X4 factorial arrangement. The factors were 9 ecotypes of Cenchrus purpureus, two seasons of the year (Summer-Fall and Winter-Spring), and four levels of mycorrhizal consortium. The variables evaluated were: number of buds, number of leaves, height of the bud, leaf length, total biomass, and leaf-stalk ratio. Results: The response of the ecotypes had a differential effect on the variables NB, LLL, TB and L/SR, while the season affected the variables LN, PH, LLL, MLL, SLL, TB and L/SR. Low inoculation levels increased the variables NB, PH, LLL, MLL and TB.Study Limitations/Implications: The evaluated factors indicate that the level of inoculant and the season determine the growth and yield of Cenchrus purpureus.Findings/Conclusions: The mycorrhizal consortium dose and season of the year mainly determined the growth and yield of C. purpureus. Ecotypes respond differently to changes in the season and in mycorrhizal consortium dose. The evaluated factors indicate that the mycorrhiza dose and the season of the year determine the growth and yield of C.purpureus. Two growth strategies of the ecotypes are visualized: 1) many buds, with few small leaves and 2) few buds with many large leaves

Okra is a vegetable crop that has a high selling value and the production of okra is more exported than sold domestically. The demand for okra from year to year continues to increase from various countries, especially Japan, which imports the most okra from Indonesia. Fertilization of phosphorus (P) fertilizer to fulfill nutrients and provision of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (CMA) for more efficient and maximum absorption by plants. Phosphorus (P) fertilizer can increase the production and quality of okra. The aim of this study was to determine the combination of treatment of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and which dosage of P fertilizer was best to increase the yield of okra production. The design used was a completely randomized design (CRD) with factorial treatment consisting of two factors. The first factor is the dose of arbucular mycorrhizal fungi (CMA) consisting of 4 levels, namely (0; 160; 320; 480) and the second factor is the dose of P fertilizer (75; 100; 125; 150). Parameters observed were plant height, number of leaves per plant, volume of roots, number of fruits per plant, weight of fresh fruit per plant and weight of plant dry corpse. Based on the analysis of variance, it showed that the interaction was significantly different on the variables of root volume, plant height, number of fruits and fruit weight. Based on research, the CMA dose of 320 kg / ha and the dose of 125 kg / ha gave the highest production results.

Nickel is an essential element for normal physiological functions in plants. At higher doses (>50 mg/kg, as per WHO) it is toxic to plants and humans, which can bring about oxidative stress affecting the physiological functions of plants and is also considered carcinogenic to human beings. To manage nickel pollution in environment, proper chemical or phytoremediation techniques are required. In this regard nickel accumulator plants would offer a cost effective and environmental friendly phytoremediation method. In the present study, the nickel phyto-accumulation potential of Amaranthus viridis from soil was evaluated to check the tolerance level and the impact on selected morphological parameters like total biomass, plant height, root length and number of leaves. Nickel uptake by A. viridis was studied from Ni contaminated soil amended with20, 40, 60, 80 mg/Kg of Ni exposure under controlled conditions. Toxic effects and tolerance of the plant to toxic doses of nickel was evaluated by correlating the uptake per gram of biomass with various parameters of plant like its height, biomass, root length and, number of leaves.  Supply dependent maximum nickel uptake of 108 µg/gm and corresponding decrease in growth parameters were recorded up to 60 mg/Kg exposure. This study indicates the uptake of nickel by A. viridis increases with increase in supply up to 60mg/kg and beyond 60 mg/kg, the uptake decreases. The study also shows uptake of nickel per gram of biomass has a significant  negative correlation mainly with parameters like plant height (R= -0.71 at 0.05 level of significance) and total biomass (R = -0.83 at 0.05 level of significance) where as other parameters like length of root and number of leavers are not significantly affected (P>0.05) with uptake of nickel per gram of biomass.
