The Old Man and the Sea is a literature work by Ernest Hemingway. It has been translated into many languages even in Indonesian by Deera Army. Hemingway used more clause complex in producing his works. It causes problems in translation such as: translators should give more attention to the translation techniques used, readability decrease, and etc. On the other hand, Deera Army solved those problems by splitting the clause complex into shorter one. It is needed to conduct a study in how to make translation of complex clause. This study can be clearly conducted by using Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) approach. In addition, this study is aimed at: (1) describing how can be interdependency and logical semantics of complex clause in source language realized into interdependency and logical semantics of complex clause in target language of The Old Man and the Sea Novel (2) describing what translation techniques on taxis markers are used in translating from source language to target language (3) describing translation quality of clause complex translation in target language. The result of the analysis showed that there are 400 sentences which have been broken into 701 clauses. Based on the analysis, there are paratactic and hypotactic form. Paratactic took 65.30% and hypotactic, 34.50%. All of them affect translation quality. Based on the analysis, the average of accuration takes up 2.89, naturalness with 2.96 and readibility with 2.97. The writer suggests that the next researcher can conduct the same research in the deeper way.

TRANSLATION TECHNIQUES IN TAJ: TRAGEDI DI BALIK TANDA CINTA ABADI NOVELTEKNIK PENERJEMAHAN DALAM NOVEL TAJ: TRAGEDI DI BALIK TANDA CINTA ABADIAbstractTranslation requires reputable competence when it is related with the translation quality: how accurate, clear, and readable the translator delivers the message. The quality of translation is closely related with the techniques used by the translator to tackle many obstacles in doing translation. Each technique used gives different impact in translation product. The translator has to choose the appropriate techniques in order to deliver the message accurately, clearly, and readable. This project was descriptive research which has been attempted to analyze the techniques used in translating historical romance novel Taj: A Story of Mughal India into Taj: Tragedi Di Balik Tanda Cinta Abadi by Maria M. Lubis. It used three variable factors of translation that were the two novels as objective factor, the translator as genetic factor, and the raters as affective factor to analyze, compare, rate, and score the translation techniques. The data chosen from the both novel were the sentence of both novel that consist of cultural specific items. From the analysis, it was found that there were 15 techniques used in translating the novel. These 15 techniques were adaptation 19.15%, pure borrowing 18.62%, established equivalent 9.57%, natural borrowing 8.51%, generalization 6.38%, Modulation 5.85%, particularization 5.85%, amplification 5.32%, transposition 2.66%, reduction 2.13%, inversion 2.13%, pure borrowing plus established equivalent 2.13%, description 1.60%, literal 1.60%, omission 1.60%, adaptation, pure borrowing, and omission 1.06%, amplification and pure borrowing 1.06%, natural and pure borrowing 1.06%, discursive creation, generalization and transposition, literal and generalization, pure borrowing and generalization, pure borrowing and transposition, generalization and omission, adaptation, pure borrowing and transposition each of them 0.53%. The result of research showed that the dominant technique used is adaptation since the cultural term of source language is appropriate to be translated as same equivalent into the target language. Teknik penerjemahan tersebut adalah adaptation 19.15%, pure borrowing 18.62%, established equivalent 9.57%, natural borrowing 8.51%, generalization 6.38%, Modulation 5.85%, particularization 5.85%, amplification 5.32%, transposition 2.66%, reduction 2.13%, inversion 2.13%, pure borrowing plus established equivalent 2.13%, description 1.60%, literal 1.60%, omission 1.60%, adaptation, pure borrowing, and omission 1.06%, amplification and pure borrowing 1.06%, natural and pure borrowing 1.06%, discursive creation, generalization and transposition, literal and generalization, pure borrowing and generalization, pure borrowing and transposition, generalization and omission, adaptation, pure borrowing and transposition each of them 0.53%. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa teknik yang paling banyak digunakan adalah adaptation dikarenakan istilah budaya lebih tepat diterjemahkan dengan mengganti elemen budaya pada bahasa sumber dengan hal yang sama pada budaya bahasa target. Kata kunci: Penerjemahan, teknik penerjemahan, novel roman sejarah

Background: This research is conducted by analyzing figurative language as irony and sarcasm in the novel entitled The Return of Sherlock Holmes (TROSH) and its translation in Bahasa Indonesia. The aims of this research are to (1) identify such types of figurative language as irony and sarcasm in the novel TROSH and its translation in Bahasa Indonesia, (2) identify translation techniques used when translating the irony and sarcasm, (3) find out the translation shifts appearing as effects of the application of the translation techniques, and (4) find out the effects of the translation shifts of irony and sarcasm on translation quality considering accuracy, acceptability, and readability.

Method: The method of this study is descriptive qualitative. The source of data is a novel entitled The Return of Sherlock Holmes and its translation. The result of questionnaires from the raters that asses the translations quality also belong to the source of data in this study. The data in this study are phrase, clause, or sentence that contain irony or sarcasm in the novel The Return of Sherlock Holmes. Beside that, the information about the quality of the translation from the raters and informants is also belonged to the data. The technique in conducting the data is done by analysing the document and the questionnaires.

Result: The research findings reveal that (1) 67 data of irony and sarcasm are found in the novel The Return of Sherlock Holmes and are divided into 6 subcategories consisting of ironical understatement, non-ironical falsehood, ironical interjections, illocutionary sarcasm, propositional sarcasm, and lexical sarcasm, (2) Several translation techniques employed are established equivalence, modulation, amplification, variation, transposition, linguistic compression, borrowing, reduction, linguistic amplification, compensation, adaptation, and particularization, while some others are couplets, triplets, and quadruplets, (3) the application of the aforementioned translation techniques leads to three possibilities such as the absence of translation shifts of irony and sarcasm, translation shifts to another figurative language, and translation shifts to nonfigurative language, (4) the translation shifts give moderate positive effects on the translation quality of irony and sarcasm found in the novel The Return of Sherlock Holmes with average score of 2.64.

Conclustion: Conclusion: The result of this study shows that established equivalence is often used in translating irony and sarcasm. The application of this technique gives a good quality in the translation of irony and sarcasm because that technique can be applied based on the context of situations in the target texts. Meanwhile, established equivalence may give a poor result of the translation quality if it is combined with another technique, for examples: reduction, transposition, and modulation. The impact of the quality is caused by the translation shifting of irony and sarcasm into another figurative language or denotative form. From the analysis of this study, it can be cncluded that the translation shifting of figurative language is one of the important thing in figurative language’s translation and translation quality assessment.

Keywords: irony and sarcasm, translation techniques, shift, translation quality

Every human has their own characteristics of languages and in order to understand one language to another languages, then, translation was essential and fully needed. In order to avoid the awkward translation, therefore the translator must use a technique in translating the texts. The research aimed at analyzing the equivalence between the source language and its translations based on the translation techniques applied by translator. This research focused on the amplification and transposition techniques could be seen on the imperative sentences especially command. The research was conducted by applying qualitative method. The research was conducted by applying library research and observation methods. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative method. The study applied two methods to present the analysis of data as follows informal and formal method. Target of research did not involve participants however, this research focused on analyzing data was English commands and its translation into Indonesian by using amplification and transposition found in the novel. The result of research showed amplification and transposition were dominant used in translating the English commands (SL) into Indonesian (TL). The translator applied amplification and transposition to find equivalences when transferring the meaning from the source language (SL) into target language (TL). Therefore, the overlapping translation could be minimized. Amplification had a role especially the addition of information. The phenomena occurred when the detail information did not contain in the SL and the translator must be sensitive by putting the necessary information in TL. Transposition created three parts of shift: structure, unit, and class of shift.

Purpose: Website translation requires an advanced translation to make the message transferred comprehensively. The purpose of this research was to analyze the translation quality of the Islamqa.info/id website in Indonesian as the Target Language (TL), translated from its original version in Arabic website, Islamqa.info/ar, as the Source Language (SL). Methodology: To discover the quality of translation work, three aspects could be rated: accuracy, acceptance, and readability. The more accurate, acceptable, and readable the translated version is, the easier the text will be understood, according to Mangatur Nababan's theory. Main Findings: The type of sentences and translation techniques were considered as the factors that could affect the translation quality. There were four types of sentences and seven techniques used in three articles from the "Education" section on Islamqa.info/id. From the analysis, it was found that the translation quality was scored 1.91 from the scale of 3.00. Implications/Applications: The implication of this research for translators, language scientists, researchers, teachers, or students is to make a good quality translation with high accuracy, acceptance, and readability score, a translator should be aware of internal and external aspects of the target language--not the source language only, since this research found that one expression could be commonly used in one language yet strange for other language's use. Novelty/Originality of this study: The results of this research could be considered for those who work on a website translation job, from Arabic to Indonesian, in particular. Since Arabic and Indonesian languages are very different from each other in terms of grammatical structure and form of expressions thus, this study has offered useful and practical suggestions for the translation of these languages.

Abstract Translation is a process of transfering source text into the target text viewed from the equivalent of meaning, with equvalencies, the message in the translation text will be the same as the target text. Hence, translating is not just the process of tranfering text from the source language into the target language. However, instead of ideas, translation enters compilation, he processes a translation product. The use of appropriate translation techniques also affects the quality of the translation results. This study aims to describe the ideology of translation in Indonesian Version of Agatha Christie’s Endless Night Novel. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data of this study are qualitative based on types of words, phrases and sentences containing translation techniques and ideology taken from the translated novel of Indonesian Version of Agatha Christie’s Endless Night Novel. Based on the analysis of translation techniques and the ideology of translation used in the text, the ideology used in the translation text is foreignization. Based on the analysis, the results of the study show that of the 18 translation techniques, 12 translation techniques were found consisting of; Literal translation (53%), Amplification (11%), Variation (8%), Particularization (6%), Borrowing (6%), Transposition (5%), Reduction (4%), Calque (2%), Compensation (2%). Meanwhile Description, Linguistic Compression, and Established Equivalent occur only in (1%). The result of the study shows that the most dominant technique used in Indonesian version of Agatha Christie’s endless night novel is Literal translation with 82 occurrences frequency or 53%.

This research aims to see how booster expression as rhetorical devices in several presentation transcripts provided TED.com are translated from English into Indonesian. Given that there are cultural differences in the use of booster expressions from the two countries. Therefore, the objectives of this study are threefold. 1. To find out what presenters use booster expressions as rhetoric tools in several presentations at TED.com, 2. Then look at what translators use translation techniques in translating booster expressions from English into Indonesian. This research is descriptive qualitative research. Data were taken from six presentation transcripts at TED.com and transcripts translated into Indonesian. All data will be categorized according to the rhetorical function of the booster expression. Then the researcher will see what translation techniques are used in translating the booster expression. Data validation was carried out through FGD before the analysis was carried out. The study results revealed that not all the booster expressions could be well translated. This can be seen from the considerable number of deletion techniques applied by the translators. Several assumptions became the reason for selecting this technique, specifically; the cultural differences between the source language and the target language in using booster expressions and the lack of translator competence in translating booster expressions.

Initial studies show that there are some translations of literary works (from Indonesian to English) where the quality of the translation is questionable due to the loss of information, the addition of information, and the skewing of information. This is the main reason why this research was made. In this research we sought to assess the translation classification and quality of the English version of the novel ‘Laskar Pelangi’ (The Rainbow Troops). The translation classification of Falk et al. (2011)was employed. The translation quality was analyzed using the framework by Nababan et al. (2012). The research employed a documentation technique of descriptive qualitative study. The study found that among 3556 (words, phrases and sentences) data there are 1889 data classified as loss of information, 1527 data categorized as addition of information, and 140 data labeled as skewing of information. The translation quality of this novel was found to be less qualified since its accuracy and acceptability were both low and readability was found to be medium. In order to improve the accuracy, acceptability and readability of a translation, the authors suggest that the translator should have both good translation capabilities as well as cultural understanding of both the source language and target language.
