There is a gap in the learning approach applied by the teacher in stimulating early childhood math skills. This study aims to describe the Lesson Study for Learning Community (LSLC) application based on Project Based Learning (PBL) in the implementation of learning to stimulate children's mathematical abilities. The method used is descriptive qualitative in group B children in IT Fathul Ilmi Kindergarten Palembang. The result is that PBL-based LSLC has learning stages; plan, do, see, and redesign mathematics learning projects. These stages facilitate children to optimally master early mathematical abilities and develop interaction, communication, and cooperation, as well as the development of caring characters and empathy for friends in completing math projects together. The application of PBL-based LSLC makes learning in Fathul Ilmi Kindergarten active and interactive, so the PBL-based LSLC is recommended to teachers and stakeholders in early childhood mathematics learning.

Abstract Background Current evidence on an integrative role of the domain-specific early mathematical skills and domain-general executive functions (EFs) from informal to formal schooling and their effect on mathematical abilities is so far unclear. The main objectives of this study were to (i) compare the domain-specific early mathematics, the number-specific EFs, and the mathematical abilities between preschool and primary school children, and (ii) examine the relationship among the domain-specific early mathematics, the number-specific EFs, and the mathematics abilities among preschool and primary school children. Methods In the present study, we recruited six- and seven-year-old children (Ntotal=505, n6yrs=238, and n7yrs=267). We compared domain-specific early mathematics as measured by symbolic and non-symbolic tasks, number-specific EFs tasks, and mathematics tasks between these preschool and primary school children. In addition, we tested the predictive power of domain-specific numerical and number-specific EFs on mathematics abilities among preschool and primary school children. MANOVA and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) were used to test research hypotheses. Results We found that primary school children were superior to preschool children over more complex tests of the domain-specific early mathematics, the number-specific EFs, the mathematics abilities, particularly, for more sophisticated numerical knowledge and the number-specific EFs components. The SEM revealed that both the domain-specific early numerical and the number-specific EFs could predict the mathematics abilities across age groups. Nevertheless, the number comparison test and mental number line of the domain-specific early mathematics were clearly pronounced in predicting the mathematics abilities for formal school children. These results highlight the benefits of both the domain-specific early mathematics and the number-specific EFs in mathematical development, especially at the key stages of formal schooling. Understanding the causal effect of EFs in improving mathematical attainments could allow a more powerful approach in improving mathematical education at this developmental stage.

Background: The use of blood products is often necessary to prime the extracorporeal circuits for pediatric cardiac surgical patients. The use of blood products carries serious risks both in the acute and long-term aspects of patient care. However, excessive hemodilution during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is associated with decreased oxygen carrying capacity, edema, and organ dysfunction. Especially, whether brain dysfunction after transfusion-free cardiac surgery on CPB occurred is unknown. Objective: This study aims to investigate whether excessive hemodilution affects child’s mental development. Methods: We studied 143 infants (24.2 +/− 15.8 months, 5 months ~ 3 years of age) had performed surgical closure of ventricular septal defect (VSD) in less than 12 months (4.8 +/− 2.6 months) of age in 7 children’s hospitals. Questionnaires mailed to the parents included the Tsumori-Inage Infant Developmental Scale estimating subjects’ behavioral developmental level as Developmental Quotients (DQ). The infants were divided into 3 groups; transfusion-free (Group A, n=52), transfusion during CPB (Group B, n=24) and transfusion after CPB (Group C, n=66). Results: Lower DQ was found for Group A (94.7 +/− 11.6) than Group B (103.5 +/− 16.0, p=0.008) and Group C (101.7 +/− 17.9, p=0.016). No correlation was found between DQ and minimum hemoglobin level during CPB (min-Hb) in Group A. The DQ was likely to be lower in the infants with below 6 g/dl (93.0 +/− 13.0) than with over 6 g/dl (98.7 +/− 8.3. p=0.10) of min-Hb. Conclusions: The results suggest that the infants after transfusion-free surgery of VSD on CPB delay in the mental development in their early childhood. Maintaining minimum hemoglobin level over 6 g/dl during CPB seems to prevent the mental development from delay.
