The relevance of research. The requirement to develop a culture of reading among the modern reader, the importance of elaborating new methods and techniques of a literary text’s analysis, including identifying the subtextual information contained in it, an intense interest in the work of I. A. Bunin determined the relevance of the study of the writer’s fiction in the monograph by L. G. Kaida. Methods of research. A descriptive method was used, including techniques of analysis, synthesis, comparison and generalization. Results and discussion. The scientific novelty of the monograph under review is due to the author’s comprehensive approach to the study of the deep meaning of 17 well-known works of different genres by I. A. Bunin. The complex nature of L. G. Kaida’s study is associated with a multifaceted consideration of the content plan of texts in line with the philosophical, psychological, philological, semiotic approaches to the study of fictional prose of the classic of Russian literature based on the analysis of the integral composition of the artistic space of these 17 texts. An integral approach and an expanded interpretation of compositional poetics as an aesthetic category allowed the author of the monograph to identify patterns characteristic of the writer at the level of his individual author’s manner of writing, to determine the features of Bunin’s psychologism, his aesthetic “I”, analyzing the writer’s work on the basis of comparing works of different years. In contrast to other researchers of Bunin’s works, the author of the monograph focused on solving his “secret writing”, considering the subtext information of Bunin’s literary works. This was successfully implemented on basis of the study of the intermedia composition of literary texts, reflecting the idea of the synthesis of arts. The concept developed by L. G. Kaida was embodied in practice in a deep analysis of the compositional poetics of I. Bunin’s works and a detailed study of the dynamics of the compositional and speech form of texts and their elements. The analysis of the artistic space of the writer’s work allows L. G. Kaida to single out and prove integral composition as “a new category of philological studies of the author’s text”. The evident advantages of the book are the identification of various “behind-the-text nuances” in the well-known works of I. A. Bunin, which makes it possible for a new, deep penetration into the author’s creative laboratory and unraveling his intentions and motives. Conclusion. New book by L. G. Kaida, owing to its relevance, theoretical and practical significance, will be in demand by specialists in theory and methods of text analysis, in the university practice of teaching the stylistics of decoding and philological analysis of the text, as well as by everyone who is interested in the work of I. A. Bunin. The author’s method of complex analysis of a literary text towards compositional poetics can be used to study the texts of other authors.

Coetzee’s interest in destabilizing the boundaries of literature and philosophy is most evident in later fictions such as Elizabeth Costello. But as Andrew Dean argues in this chapter, this interest in moving across boundaries in fact originates much earlier, in Coetzee’s quarrel with the institutions and procedures of literary criticism. Coetzee used the occasion of his inaugural professorial lecture at the University of Cape Town (Truth and Autobiography) to criticize the assumption that literary criticism can reveal truths about literature to which literary texts are themselves blind. Influenced in part by such figures as Jacques Derrida and Paul de Man, Coetzee posed a series of challenging questions about the desires at stake in the enterprise of literary criticism. Developing these thoughts, Dean explores the way in which Coetzee’s earlier fiction, including such texts as Foe (1986), is energized by its quarrelsome relationship with literary criticism and theory, especially postcolonial theory.

This special issue follows a conference entitled ‘Rencontres: A Gathering of Voices of the Vietnamese Diaspora’ that was held at the University of Melbourne, December 1-2 in 2016 and which sought to enable, for the first time, the titular transdiasporic rencontres or encounters between international authors of the Vietnamese diaspora. The present amalgam of previously unpublished texts written by celebrated Francophone and Anglophone authors of Vietnamese descent writing in France, New Caledonia and Australia today is the result of the intercultural exchanges that took place during that event. Literary texts by Linda Lê, Anna Moï and Thanh-Van Tran-Nhut are followed by writerly reflections on the theme of transdiasporic encounters from Hoai Huong Nguyen, Jean Vanmai and Hoa Pham. Framing and enriching these texts, scholarly contributions by established experts in the field consider the literary, cultural and linguistic transfers that characterize contemporary writing by authors of Vietnamese origin across the Francophone world.

Radiocarbon and stable isotope determination in foods, flavors, and beverages, for the authentication of source material and process of formation, is a well-established method of identity used in industry. New methods of provenance determination, using stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen, have added to the host of other isotopic methods used for characterizing natural or botanically derived products. The unambiguous determinant of a product's fossil fuel origin be it from petroleum, natural gas, or coal, is through the measurement of its 14C content. The 14C content can also be used to determine the fraction dilution of recently grown and harvested material with that derived from fossil fuel, and even confirms the vintage of agricultural products based on the well-established decrease of bomb-produced atmospheric 14C. This paper documents 14C measurements at the University of Georgia's Center for Applied Isotope Studies accelerator mass spectrometry and stable isotope laboratories, over the last 3 yr, for 10 important flavoring compounds. By establishing an accurate and current level of 14C in botanically derived products, we were able to confirm a particular source for vanilla production, the most popular consumer flavor in the marketplace. Over the years, vanilla extract has been produced less and less from vanilla beans (Vanilla planifolia), particularly those from Madagascar and the Comoros Islands, and more from other botanical precursors such as ferulic acid, clove oil, and guaiacol. We report isotopic data to support this precursor for vanilla production based on high 14C levels accumulated during the tree's life, incorporated in the tree rings and their associated stable isotope abundances.

Due to the complex nature of archival images, it is an ongoing challenge to establish a metadata architecture and metadata standards that are easy to navigate and take into consideration future requirements. This contribution will present a use case in the humanities based on the Digital Research Archive for Byzantium (DiFAB) at the University of Vienna. Tracing one monument and its photographic documentation, this paper will highlight some issues concerning metadata for images of material culture, such as: various analog and digital forms of documentation; available thesauri – including problems of historical geography, multilingualism, and culturally specific terminologies –; and the importance of both precise and imprecise dating for cultural historians and their research archives.
