This article focuses on the study of the importance of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches in the study of Islamic science. From the results of the study concluded that the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach is very important in Islamic studies for several reasons: First, the interdisciplinary approach is a very important approach to be encouraged especially if this approach is used to understand the Islamic messages contained in the Qur'an and al-Hadith. Second, the interdisciplinary approach is a new approach to contextualizing Islamic messages, so that the Islamic messages are truly shalih li kulli zaman wa al-makan.

In the Islamic discourse, the study of hadith is in demand today. This is because the function of hadith is as a source of Islamic teachings which is a necessity in human life in all circumstances and conditions. Therefore, the proper method of understanding hadith through comprehensive approach both textual and contextual is required. The study of hadith also needs methodology enlightenment and paradigm shift. In this case, modification and adaptation of information and methodology elements by a discipline from other disciplines is a natural thing. This integration of various diciplines is then known as interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach. Interdisciplinary approach in the study of hadith which use the traditional Islamic science is also done by a number of contemporary scholars of hadith.

Discussing the paradigm of dialogue and integration in the Islamic science of religion is important since the practice of religious education still applies the paradigm of conflict and independence. These paradigms have a great influence on the formation of socio-religious and cultural ways of thinking. The relationship between Islamic religiousc and natural, social, as well as cultural sciences, needs patterns of integrated, interconnected relations and dialogues. Islamic Studies requires a multidisciplinary approach, that is, interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity. Scientific linearity, in which science is narrowly defined and mono-disciplinary, will lead to an understanding of religion and religious interpretations that has no contact with and relevance to the context in which it is studied. New types of religious thought that encourage independent discussion and dialogue on the subjective, objective and intersubjective aspects of science and religion will create the emergence of a new type of religiosity in the multicultural era. All of this requires more effort to undertake a serious reconstruction of scientific methodologies and the methodologies of scientific studies of religion.

Abstract The present article intends to contribute to the research on the kalām (“theology”) in Mauritania. So far, this particular Islamic science has received little attention of Islamic studies outside Mauritania. Around a dozen Mauritanian and non-Mauritanian commentaries on the highly popular didactic poem Iḍāʾat ad-duǧunna of al-Maqqarī – until today part of the education curriculum in the cultural area of the Western Sahara – provide the basis of the present paper which is divided in two parts: Part one presents some characteristic features of Mauritanian literature and the status of ʿilm al-kalām in Mauritania. Part two deals with the Iḍāʾa and its (Mauritanian) commentaries. Some selected key verses of the Iḍāʾa and their interpretation by various commentators are discussed here. Particular attention is paid to autobiographical notes and the elaboration on some special terms (for example tauḥīd, ʿilm, auwal wāǧib). Further topics addressed include the dialogue between al-Ǧubbāʾī and al-Ašʿarī and the report on Ibn Barraǧān’s prediction of the conquest of Jerusalem from the crusaders by the Muslims in the year 583 H. Since many Mauritanian manuscripts about kalām have not been edited to the present day, even an approximate overview on the Mauritanian kalām literature is still out of sight. However, the investigation of the Mauritanian ʿilm al-kalām as a subbranch of studies on later kalām since the seventeenth century promises to provide highly relevant and intriguing insights.

The word “pelvic floor dysfunction” has different meanings in different specialties, i.e. radiology, urology, gynaecology, coloproctology. Despite the fact that the concept of perineology is not exactly new, most clinicians have only slowly adapted their practice to this transversal view. The multidisciplinary approach (several specialists dealing with various pelvic floor problems) still prevails over the interdisciplinary one (one specialist explaining what is happening) with several problems in the choice of therapeutic strategies. Obviously, the interdisciplinary approach requires a wide knowledge of the principles and techniques of each specialty. This monographic issue reviews advanced diagnostic testing for female pelvic floor dysfunctions from the perspective of a single specialist, namely a urologist.

The article discusses the role of the disciplinary approach in the study of historical memory. In the modern research field, the methodological status of an interdisciplinary approach is becoming more and more popular. It is connected with the problems of the new ontology formation, where the general foundations between nature and society are investigated. Many sciences use the of interdisciplinary methodology to understand the interaction of the natural sciences and the humanities. Today, the organization of interdisciplinarity is actively criticized, which does not take into account the interconnection between natural sciences and humanities. The absence of this relationship is manifested in the problems of historical memory. Therefore, the idea is being advanced to justify the fundamental status of historical memory, it is necessary to change the organization of scientific knowledge.

Pain is an unpleasant and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage. The current method of caring for a person with multiple issues and problems is a "multidisciplinary" approach; however, the disadvantages of a multidisciplinary approach are many. A more desirable alternative is an "interdisciplinary" approach. Interdisciplinary care is predicated on professionals communicating with one another about a single patient and designing care that is in the overall best interest of the patient. This paper describes the formation of the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management, whose objective is to promote the interdisciplinary approach to animal pain management.

This study discusses the integration of science at USIM as a model for UIN Imam Bonjol Padang in discussing the philosophical design of Islamic studies after changing the status of the institution. This integration backgrounds at USIM are science and the local socio-cultural, the same condition also occurs at UIN Imam Bonjol Padang in Minangkabau by uniting religion and tradition as local wisdom. This research aims at analyzing the absorption of Islamic values in the general sciences, elaborating the design of competitive Islamic studies, formulating models for the application of science integration at USIM, and predicting the opportunities and challenges of their application at UIN Imam Bonjol Padang. This study used qualitative methods to understand the phenomenon as a whole so that the research data are sourced from leadership informants, lecturers, institution managers, and documents collected through participant observation, interviews, focus group discussions, and documentation. The results illustrate that the integration of knowledge in USIM Malaysia has a uniqueness that can motivate and encourage the Muslim community to make it the first choice. The approach taken by USIM is comprehensive by uniting naqli and ‘aqli which are summarized in 7 USIM Terrace. This research can be used as a rule model for UIN Imam Bonjol Padang who is in a transition period of institutional status to compile an integrated Islamic study design based on Minangkabau local wisdom as a socio-cultural background to form loyal, knowledgeable, and cultured scholars, and participate in solving various problems of community life.

Abstract This special issue argues in favor of a new approach to the study of norms of warfare, which combines a normative analysis of ethical problems arising in war with an explanatory analysis of the use of force. Norms of warfare go as far back as Antiquity, and their study has followed a long historical path. In recent years, the ethics of war, mostly grounded in philosophy, has considerably expanded as a field. Notwithstanding such efforts to refine our normative knowledge of what should be just norms for the use of force, we argue that a more interdisciplinary approach is required to orient the study of the laws of war. In this Special Issue, proposals are made that, along with normative analysis, bring to the discussion not only disciplines such as political science and international relations, but also social theory, psychology and the neurosciences. We argue from a non-ideal perspective, that in order for norms to be just, they need to be ‘plausible’ for those who should abide by them. They also need to make sense in the context of democratic societies that favor a pluralistic debate on justice and ethics. Epistemically, we argue that, in order to understand if norms are plausible and just, reducing the gap between the normative and the empirical is required.
