Ethanol extract of  sarang banua leaves (Clerodendrum fragrans) has biological activity. This study aims to isolate the fraction of ethanol extracts of Sarang Banua leaves (Clerodendrum fragrans) and test their antibacterial activity against Salmonella enterica. The isolation method uses the vacuum liquid chromatography method, with eluent n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol with increasing polarity levels. Antibacterial activity was carried out by the inhibitory test, the MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) and MBC  (minimum bactericidal concentration). The results showed that the FC fraction chromatographic results of the vacuum column of ethanol extract of Sarang Banua leaf (Clerodendrum fragrans) had antibacterial activity against Salmonella enteric  with a strong inhibitory power (inhibitory zone 18.25 mm), MIC value  of 125 µg / mL and MBC value  of  125 µg / mL are included in the medium category. Inhibition, MIC and MBC values of chloramphenicol (positive control) against S. enterica were 17.40 mm; 31.2 μg / mL and 62.5 μg / mL. In the FC fraction there are higher amounts of secondary metabolites  flavonoids,  tannins, as well as small amounts of alkaloids, saponin, steroids & triterprnoids.

The Simargaolgaol (Aglaonema modestum Schott ex Engl) plant is a plant that grows wild in Barus District, Central Tapanuli, North Sumatra which is used by the community as a medicinal plant. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of n-hexane, ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts from Simargaolgaol leaves against Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi bacteria. The antibacterial activity test of Simargaolgaol leaves was carried out using the disc diffusion method. The results of antibacterial activity showed that the highest inhibitory power of Simargaolgaol leaf extract was ethanol extract (polar), ethyl acetate extract (semi polar) and n-hexane extract (non polar). The inhibitory power of ethanol extract, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane against Escherichia coli bacteria was 13.1 mm (strong); 9.7 mm (medium); 8.0 mm (medium) and for Salmonella typhi bacteria respectively 11.2 mm (strong); 10.7 mm (strong) and 9.3 mm (medium). With the concentration of the extract in the diameter is 10%. Based on this, it can be concluded that Simargaolgaol leaf extract has potential as an antibacterial. Research Test Antibacterial Activity of Ethanol Extracts of Leaves kecombrang against Salmonella typhi aims to determine the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of leaves kecombrang against Salmonella typhi. The extract used is kecombrang leaf extract prepared by maceration using ethanol 95%, extracts obtained test chemical classes of compounds to determine the content of the active compound. Antibacterial activity test conducted at five concentrations of the extract is 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%. Inhibition zone measurement results are then analyzed using One Way ANOVA with SPSS 20 to determine whether there is a difference at each concentration. The results showed kecombrang leaf ethanol extract 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% produce inhibition zone diameter 3.9 mm; 6.5 mm; 6.75 mm; 7:45 mm; and 9:28 mm, 0 mm for the negative control and positive control 32.61 mm. The test results show the class of secondary metabolites kecombrang leaf ethanol extract contains tannin, saponin, and flavonoids. Of statistical tests concluded there were significant differences of treatment results in inhibition of the respective concentrations of ethanol extracts of leaves kecombrang

This study is aimed at determining antibacterial activity from ethanol extracts and the most active fraction of cassava leaves against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus epidermidis and Propionibacterium acnes. Research carried out by the experimental method involved determination of plants, extraction with maceration method, fractionation with liquid-liquid extraction, antibacterial activity testing of extracts and fractions by agar diffusion method, determination of most active fraction from the extract, and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) testing of most active fraction by microdilution method. The results showed that ethanol extracts of cassava leaves had antibacterial activity against both bacteria with the most active fraction indicated by ethyl acetate. MIC values of ethyl acetate fraction against S. epidermidis were in the concentration range of 2.5%–5.0% (w/v) and against P. acnes were in the concentration range of 1.25%–2.5% (w/v). The MBC value of ethyl acetate fraction against S. epidermidis was at a concentration of 5% (w/v), while P. acnes was at a concentration of 2.5% (w/v). From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the ethanol extract of cassava leaves (Manihot esculenta Crantz) has antibacterial activity against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus epidermidis as well as on Propionibacterium acnes. The fraction with the best activity from the ethanol extract of cassava leaves to the two test bacteria was shown by ethyl acetate fraction. It is suggested that cassava leaves are possible to be developed into standardized antiacne herbal.

Mekai leaves (Pycnarrhena cauliflora Diels.) (P. cauliflora). Are known to contain flavonoid compounds, tannins and phenolics that act as antibacterial agents and are used in the treatment of eye pain. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is one of the examples of bacterial diseases of eye pain and also a major cause of many infections in communities and health facilities with cases of resistance to various antimicrobial agents. The purpose of this study was to prove the antibacterial activity of mekai leaves ethanol extract against S. aureus bacteria. This research is an experimental research. The stages of this research began by extracting mekai leaves using maceration method with 96% ethanol solvent. Antibacterial activity was tested by the disc method (Kirby-Bauer) using ethanol extract concentrations of mekai leaves (EPC) 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, and 80%, positive control using 25 μg amoxicillin and negative control using DMSO 10%. The measurement results of inhibition zones of mekai leaf ethanol extract 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70% and 80% respectively were 8.32 mm, 8.32 mm, 8.32 mm, 8.67 mm, 9.00 mm, 8.67 mm, and 8.33 mm. While the positive control measurement of 25 μg amoxicillin against S. aureus is 28.67 mm and the measurement of 10% negative DMSO control does not produce inhibitory zones, so it can be concluded that the ethanol extract of mekai leaves has antibacterial activity, but the area of ​​inhibition zone produced is smaller than amoxicillin 25 µg. The results of statistical tests using Mann Whitney between negative controls with all EPC concentrations obtained significant differences with p values ​​<0.05, it can be concluded that there is antibacterial activity produced at all EPC concentrations.

Moringa (moringa oleifera Lam) leaves contains many molecules as inhibitors for free radicals such as phenolic compounds (phenolic acids, flavonoids, quinones, coumarins, lignans, stilbenes, tannins), nitrogen compounds (alkaloids, amines, betalain), vitamins, terpenoids (including carotenoids), and several other endogenous metabolites as antioxidants. This study aimed to determine the antioxidant potency of water and ethanol extracts of moringa (moringa oleifera Lam) leave obtained by maceration and dekok. The concentration of free radical 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) was analyzed using UV-Vis spectrophotometer after addition of various concentrations of Moringa leaves extracts. Various concentrations of moringa leave extracts used were 20 ppm, 40 ppm, 60 ppm and 80 ppm. Vitamin C solutions as the positive control were prepared on similar various concentrations. The negative control was prepared using DPPH solutions dissolved in absolute ethanol. The results indicated that the ethanol extract of moringa leaves prepared by maceration method showed the antioxidant potency with an IC50 value of 22.1818 ppm, but the IC50 value of water extract of moringa leaves prepared by dekok was 57.5439 ppm. While, the IC50 value of Vitamin C was 8.8084 ppm. Based on the IC50 data it can be concluded that Vitamin C is a stronger antioxidant than moringa leaves extracts.

ABSTRACT Sponges are a component of coral reef biota that has bioactive compounds with a greater percentage of activity compared to compounds produced by terrestrial plants. This study aims to determine the presence of antioxidant activity in the ethanol extracts of sponge Ianthella basta from the waters of Tumbak Village. Ianthella basta sponge was extracted using maceration method with 96% ethanol solvent. Antioxidant activity testing was carried out using the DPPH method with a concentration of 100 µg / mL, 75 μg / mL, 50 μg / mL, and 25 μg / mL and Vitamin C p.a as positive control. Each sample was made three repetitions of the test. Testing using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The results showed that the ethanol extract of the Ianthella basta sponge had antioxidant activity with a percentage of 48.73% at a concentration of 100 µg / mL. Keywords: Ianthella basta sponge, Antioxidants, Extraction, DPPH  ABSTRAK Spons merupakan salah satu komponen biota penyusun terumbu karang yang mempunyai senyawa bioaktif dengan persentase keaktifan lebih besar dibandingkan dengan senyawa-senyawa yang dihasilkan oleh tumbuhan darat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui adanya aktivitas antioksidan di dalam ekstrak etanol Spons Ianthella basta dari perairan Desa Tumbak. Spons Ianthella basta diekstraksi menggunakan metode maserasi dengan pelarut etanol 96%. Pengujian aktivitas antioksidan dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode DPPH dengan konsentrasi 100 µg/mL, 75 µg/mL, 50 µg/mL, dan 25 µg/mL dan Vitamin C p.a sebagai kontrol positif. Masing-masing sampel dibuat tiga kali pengulangan uji. Pengujian menggunakan alat spektrofotometer UV-Vis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ektrak etanol Spons Ianthella basta memiliki aktivitas antioksidan dengan persentase sebesar 48,73% pada konsentrasi 100 µg/mL. Kata Kunci: Spons Ianthella basta, Antioksidan, Ekstraksi, DPPH

Spirulina is a microalgae that has been widely used as various supplements and medicines because of its high nutritional content. The need for new antibacterial sources to solve the problem of antibiotic resistance, makes the potential of Spirulina as an antibacterial agent necessary to be researched. This study aims to analyze the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of Spirulina platensis obtained from the Indonesian region against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Spirulina samples were macerated in ethanol solvent in a ratio of 1:10 (w / v). The antibacterial test used was the disc diffusion method with clindamycin positive control. Antibacterial test results showed that S. platensis in this study did not have antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus.

The use of antibiotics that are not according to the rules and antibiotics in the long term can cause resistance to bacteria. This study aims to determine the presence of antibacterial activity and the effect of increasing the concentration of ethanol extract of Ganoderma sp. against several test bacteria. Extract from Ganoderma sp. obtained by maceration method using ethanol 95% solvent. The extract concentrations used were 20%, 40%, 60% and 80%. This research was conducted using the wells method with ciprofloxacin as a positive control and 50% DMSO as a negative control. The parameter measured is the large diameter of the inhibition formed around the well. The results of the antibacterial activity test of ethanol extract Ganoderma sp. has greater inhibitory activity against gram-negative bacteria. The inhibitory activity of ethanolic extract of Ganoderma sp. on the growth of test bacteria increased with increasing concentration of the extract

Bioassay-guided isolation of bioactive compound is a modern and efficient technique in metabolites screening. It may shorten the total time of the entire process and reduce some costs of it. The aim of this paper was to fractionate and isolate alkaloids by developing an innovative vacuum liquid chromatography method for a species of Narcissus c.v. ‘Hawera’ rarely investigated so far and establishing the inhibitory activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE). The studies consisted of the extraction of plant material by modern pressurized liquid extraction (PLE), followed by the isolation of alkaloidal fractions. For this purpose, the pioneering gradient vacuum liquid chromatography (gVLC) technique was employed by using two sorbents in various proportions packed in polypropylene cartridges for the first time. This step was performed in order to pre-clean the samples but also to establish the best combination of sorbents which permits obtaining potentially strong AChE inhibitors. The collected fractions were examined by HPLC/ESI-QTOF-MS in order to compare which combination of sorbents would allow us to obtain the highest concentration of alkaloids. The combination of these techniques confirmed the presence of the alkaloids and enabled the development of a modern method for the fractionation and isolation of the compounds with strong anti-AChE activity.

Sickle cell disorder is a genetic ailment with enormous social and economic burden for patients and caregivers. The most promising management apart from being expensive particularly for poor African people, faces some major incompatibility problems. The patients consequently rely on herbal therapy which could be prepared in single or combination forms to manage the painful episodes and its complications. This present study aimed to formulate polyherbal combination and evaluate three purposively selected plants previously reported for their antisickling activities. The polyherbal products were formulated using both aqueous and 70% ethanol extracts into different combinational ratio with the best in 1:1:1 and evaluated for its antisickling activity. The antisickling activity involved both the inhibitory and reversal effects at varying concentrations from 1.0 mg/ml to 6.0 mg/ml using ciklavit as the positive control. The best inhibitory activity was found in ethanol extract of Piper guineense, Gongronema latifolium and Cymbopogon citratus (PGC) with 70.09 ± 0.67% when compared with the positive control (59.25 ± 0.05%) at 4.0 mg/mg while the reversal ability was 67.87 ± 1.23%. The aqueous extracts of the combinations had activity above 50% with the exception of PGC (2:3:1) which is a little less than 50% (46.67 ± 0.98%) while the highest was 60.02 ± 0.87%. The polyherbal ethanol extract had better effects than the aqueous extract and the standard drug used in this study.
