Betta fish (Betta sp) is a freshwater ornamental fish during the pandemic that is very popular with the public. However, people tend to prefer male betta fish than female fish. To deal with the large number of requests, a sex reversal technique is carried out which applies hormonal engineering to change female to male sexual characters (masculinization) using natural ingredients, namely cow testicle flour. The purpose of this study was to analyze the dose of bovine testicular flour hormone on the process of oral male betta fish larvae. This research was conducted in Moncongloe Village, Maros Regency, from July to September 2021. The production of beef testicle flour was carried out in the Chemical Engineering laboratory, Ujung Pandang State Polytechnic. Betta fish seeds were kept each in an aquarium measuring 20 cm x 14 cm x 20 cm as many as 12 pieces. Soaking artemia with beef testicle flour with a predetermined dose of 60 mg L-1, 80 mg L-1 and 100 mg L-1, the duration of immersion is 24 hours. This study used a one-factor completely randomized design (CRD). The results obtained were the highest percentage of male genitalia at a dose of 100 mg L-1 with a percentage of 66.7%. The survival rate of betta fish during the maintenance period with different doses of cow testicles obtained data ranging from 80-100%.

An investigation was carried out to study the effects of single and double injection of given dose of pituitary gland (PG) on the breeding performance viz., ovulation response, fertilization, and hatching of climbing perch, Anabas testudineus was tested. Pituitary gland dose of 1.2 mg/100g was used in this experiment. Twenty female fish was arranged into two treatments: T1 and T2, each with 10 replications. In T1, the entire dose was administered in a single injection and in T2 the same dose was given in two equal injections three hr apart. The experiment was laid in completely randomized design (CRD). It was found that administration of PG in split doses (double injection) had no additional advantages (ovulation 100%, fertilization 81.56% and hatching 72.68%) over the single injection (ovulation 100%, fertilization 83.03% and hatching 75.48%) treatment. Similarly, the ovulation time of the fish did not vary significantly in either single or double injection of PG (single injection 7.12 hr; double injection 7.20 hr). The results demonstrated that splitting of pituitary gland dose (double injection) has no additional advantages on breeding performance of A. testudineus. Therefore, single injection may be preferred over the second injection for breeding of this fish. Key words: Breeding, pituitary gland (PG), fertilization, hatching J. bio-sci. 14: 57-60, 2006

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different prey concentrations (50; 100; 150 and 200 artemia nauplii post-larvae-1 day-1) and salinized water (0; 1 and 2 g L-1) on larviculture of Pyrrhulina brevis, an Amazonian ornamental fish. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, in a 4x3 factorial design, with three replicates. A total of 360 post-larvae were randomly distributed in 36 aquariums (1L), to 10 post-larvae L-1. At the end of the experimental period (15 days) the post-larvae were measured, weighed and counted. No interaction was identified between the prey concentrations and salinized water for all evaluated parameters. The best growth results, both for length and weight, were observed in the post-larvae that received 150 and 200 artemia nauplii post-larvae-1 day-1, while the lower survival rate was observed in post-larvae fed 50 and 100 artemia nauplii post-larvae-1 day-1. The final length and length gain were higher when the post-larvae were reared in salinized water at 1 and 2 g L-1, while the final weight, weight gain and specific growth rate were higher in post-larvae submitted to 1 g L-1 of salinized water. The uniformity of the batch for weight and length of the fish showed no significant difference, independent of the prey concentrations and salinized water used. Thus, the supply of 150 artemia nauplii post-larvae-1 day-1 in salinized water at 1 g L-1 is recommended during the first fed of Pyrrhulina brevis.

Antibiotic Growth Promoter (AGP) synthetic as a feed additive can stimulate growth, prevent some health problems, and improve feed efficiency. However, its journey has raised concerns due to adverse effects such as residues and microbial resistance. The use of turmeric flour and betaine as feed additives is expected to substitute the use of AGP Synthetic in improving the performance of pig carcasses and the safety of consumption. This study was aimed to examine the effect of the addition of turmeric flour and different doses of betaine in the ration on the performance of finisher period pigs. The study was conducted experimentally using a completely randomized design with four treatments and five replications. The objects of the study were 20 male and female finisher Landrace pigs with a finisher period with initial body weights of 55-66 kg/head. The study rations used were R0: basal ration, R1: R0 + 0.4% turmeric flour + 0.1% betaine, R2: R0 + 0.4% turmeric flour + 0.15% betaine and R3: R0 + 0.4% turmeric flour + 0.2% betaine. The parameters measured were carcass weight, backfat thickness, and loin eye area. The addition of turmeric flour treatment did not have any significant effects on carcass weight and thickness of the back fat of the pig. The addition of 0.4% turmeric flour and 0.15% betaine in the ration was the best treatment and resulted in a different effect on the loin eye area compared to that of R0, while treatment R1 and R3 had a similar effect on it. The result of the addition of 0.4% turmeric flour and 0.15% betaine resulted in the loin eye area of the finisher pig of 53.4 cm2
