This study aims to describe the use of social media on the attitude of UNJ students in determining the 2019 Presidential and Vice Presidential Candidates. The method used in this study is qualitative by using an interaction model consisting of data reduction, data presentation and conclusions. Data collection techniques used in this study were interviews, observation and documentation with three informants as resource persons. The results showed that social media is not a reason in determining the choice of 2019 presidential and vice presidential candidates. That is because each individual has their own political views. Social media is used as a means of finding information about 2019 presidential and vice presidential candidates. Information that is often obtained on social media is a work program, vision and mission. Usually the information uploaded by the 2019 presidential and vice presidential candidates is easy to understand because it uses language that is easy to remember and understand. But there is some information that must be further studied. In addition, social media can become one of the effective media in accommodating the aspirations of the community if the presidential and vice presidential candidates can respond to the message conveyed by the public.

Insurgent candidates from across the political spectrum are increasingly turning to social media to directly engage the public. Social media offer a platform that favours affect and personality, both key components of populist-style rhetoric, a label that is often attached to politicians outside the political establishment. Despite noteworthy exceptions, few cross-national studies of high-profile candidates’ use of social media exist, and even less is known about how candidates representing various political ideologies employ affect alongside populism. To advance the state-of-the-art, this study examines the sentiment and rhetorical targets of attack in the Twitter feeds ( N = 25,825 tweets) of six presidential candidates in the United States and French election campaigns of 2016 and 2017. Employing dictionary-based quantitative analysis, the study finds variation among the candidates’ rhetoric in terms of how they employ populist themes, affect and ideology. The findings suggest that scholars should consider a more nuanced approach to populism in late-modern democracies.

Social media, as interactive technologies, have given people unprecedented possibility to access information about elections and electoral contestants, to publicly express their opinions, interact with candidates, and get actively involved in electoral campaigns. This disruptive set of tools that allows and encourages individuals to engage in all stages of the political process, has become a powerful mechanism for political campaigns, in building and enhancing communication strategies. The use of social media in politics dramatically changed the way campaigns are run. Social media provide useful platforms for electoral contestants, inclusively for those with limited resources, to present their agenda and mobilise a larger support base for their causes, at substantially lower costs. They offer the possibility for creation of shareable content that candidates and supporters can use to increase awareness, engage the targeted groups, and appeal for votes. However, the changes in the production and consumption of election-related content also raise a number of concerns that question the effectiveness of electoral rules, in their current form. The aim of this paper is to underline the potential problems which have emerged and have been aggravated with the shift of political propaganda during election campaigns onto social media and identify safeguard measures that may be set in place to prevent abuse of the political process.

People increasingly engage in politics on social media, but does online engagement translate to offline engagement? Research is mixed with some suggesting how one uses the internet maters. We examine how political engagement on social media corresponds to offline engagement. Using data following the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election, we find the more politically engaged people are on social media, the more likely they are to engage offline across measures of engagement—formal and informal volunteering, attending local meetings, donating to and working for political campaigns, and voting. Findings offer important nuances across types of civic engagement and generations. Although online engagement corresponds to greater engagement offline in the community and may help narrow generational gaps, this should not be the only means to promote civic participation to ensure all have a voice and an opportunity to help, mobilize, and engage.

This paper examines the relationship between political candidates' use of Facebook and their election outcomes (vote share and election success). The use of social media in political marketing campaigns has grown dramatically over the past few years. It is also expected to become even more critical to future political campaigns, as it creates two-way communication and engagement that stimulates and fosters candidates' relationships with their supporters. Online Facebook data were acquired for all 84 candidates running in a municipal election in Taiwan. Results suggest that a candidate's Facebook presence, the type of account they use, the authentication of the account, and the number of online fans they have are related to their election outcomes.
