For determination of the vitamin status via mass screening, simple and rapid methods are required. Additionally, blood samples should be obtained using simple and low invasive sampling techniques. To fulfill this existing methods have been modified to analyze retinol, tocopherols, beta-carotene, vitamin C and homocysteine in 20 mul plasma. Blood samples were obtained via skin punctures. HPLC measurements were carried out with isocratic separation and precolumn derivatization. Intra and interday variation coefficients were below 8% and regression coefficients better than 0.99 for all measurements. The difference between venous and capillary samples were < 5%. In conclusion, the methods employed proved satisfactory for the determination of important nutritional parameters in blood samples obtained via skin punctures. These methods are therefore well suited for mass screening, especially under field conditions in developing countries.

Introductioan: This article discusses the relevance of maritime border delimitation with environmental factors that affect the determination of delimitation.Purposes of the Research: The purpose of this study is to analyze the urgency of the role of the environment in the maritime border delimitation process. Specifically focused on analyzing whether there is a positive relationship between environmental considerations and the development of the delimitation process and to determine the environmental factors that influence the delimitation. Methods of the Research: This research uses normative research with a conceptual approach. Researchers use relevant environmental law concepts in the maritime border delimitation process. Results of the Research: The results of the study show that there is a relevance of environmental factors in determining maritime border delimitation, among others from factors: conservation of wildlife reserves, the principle of natural prolongation, the principle of sustainable development, mineral resources, and fisheries. The relationship between environmental factors and the delimitation process occurs in two ways: First, environmental considerations show a direct influence in the selection of the delimitation method. Here environmental factors are an important motive in the delimitation process. Second, environmental factors affect the delimitation process indirectly where there are a number of delimitation agreements that do not include specific provisions regarding the environment, but the evidence shows that the parties are motivated by environmental factors in negotiating delimitation.

This study examined the relationship between savings, investment and economic growth. A corollary of the work is the determination of which of the inputs of production contributes more to economic growth in Nigeria. The study makes use of time series data spanning twenty-nine years using error correction model. The result shows a positive relationship between savings, investment and economic growth in Nigeria. Of the determinants of savings considered in the study, inflation rate contributes negatively to saving, while interest rate positively affect saving. All these confirm economic theory. The striking feature of the study however is the confirmation of the impact of labour on economic growth, which according to the study far outweighs the contribution of capital.

The effect of T-2 toxin contaminated feed (2.35 mg kg-1) and/or vitamin E supplementation in drinking water (10.5 mg/animal day-1) for 14 days on the haemagglutination inhibition titres against Newcastle disease virus was investigated in repeatedly vaccinated (on 23 days of age) broiler chicken. The animals were divided into four groups: (1) control; (2) treated with vitamin E; (3) fed a T-2 toxin contaminated feed; (4) fed a T-2 toxin contaminated diet and treated with vitamin E. Blood samples were taken on days 7 and 14 of the experiment for determination of sera titres and vitamin E content, liver samples were also taken on the same days for vitamin E determination. It was found that haemagglutination titres increased in comparison to the controls as an effect of vitamin E supply and also a low dose T-2 toxin challenge. The combination of both treatments showed some synergistic effect. The utilization of vitamin E decreased by the feeding of T-2 toxin contaminated diet, particularly in the liver.

Although information on amoebiasis among institutionalized psychiatric patients is available, reports on the relationship between behaviour and this infection are not abundant. From July 1995 to June 1996, stool and blood samples were collected from 565 patients in three psychiatric hospitals of North Taiwan. Stool samples were examined using the direct smear and formalin-ethyl acetate sedimentation techniques as well as ProSpecT® Entamoeba histolytica Microplate Assay kit. Blood samples were examined by the Amebiasis Serology Microwell ELISA kit. Among these patients, 14 (2·5%) harboured one or two species of intestinal parasites. There were 6 (1·1%) E. histolytica/E. dispar cyst passers: 5 positive in stool ELISA test and 2 with antibodies against E. histolytica. Among demographic factors, type of psychiatric disorder and disability, only a significant sexual difference in seropositivity of E. histolytica was observed. These findings indicate that the infected patients acquired the infections before they entered the hospitals.

The Indonesian government has been catching up with infrastructure development in recent years. In carrying out infrastructure development, funding and determination of the optimum capital structure are needed because this will affect a company's financial structure. The company's source of funds comes from foreign capital and equity as measured by the debt-to-equity ratio. However, in realizing the optimal determination of capital structure will affect several other financial ratios, therefore the aim of this study is to identify and examine the relationship between DER and DPR, SR and SR which uses FS and ROE as intervening variables. The data used were fourteen companies engaged in building construction and toll road construction. The results of this study indicate that there is a significant positive relationship between DER on FS, ROE, EPS and DPR, FS on EPS and ROE on DPR and EPS. The DER variable on DPR and EPS which is moderated by ROE and FS also has a significant positive relationship. On the other hand, the relationship between FS and DPR and the DER variable against DPR moderated by FS, show a significant negative, while the relationship between DER and SR is negative and insignificant. In addition, the relationship between FS and ROE on SR and DER against SR which is moderated by FS and ROE shows a positive but insignificant. Keywords: Debt Equity Ratio, Firm Size Earning Per Share, Return on Equity, Dividend Payout Ratio dan Stock Return.

Changes in composition and flow rate of saliva depict secondary systematic variations related to diseases, drugs and treatment of illnesses. This research examines the relationship between the saliva pH and saliva resistin in the seemingly healthy individuals. In this study 82 patients referring to the Department of Oral Medicine, Faculty of Tabriz Dentistry were examined. Before sampling from the patients with inclusive conditions, their mouths were washed by water and after 15 minutes 5ml of their saliva were collected by drooling in the sterile polyethylene containers. The collected samples were transferred to the laboratory and their pH was measured. Then the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test was performed by specific kit for saliva resistin measuring. The mean value of saliva resistin was 15.60±7.56 and pH mean value was 7.61±0.68. Results showed that about 61% of patients had resistin higher than15 ng/ml. According to the analysis results, 15.9% of patients had pH less than 7 while 57.3% had pH between 7-8 and 26.8% had pH higher than 8. There was a positive relationship between saliva resistin and pH. Since salivary resistin levels vary in response to different clinical conditions, direct relationship between the saliva resistin and pH indicates that pH changes can depict risk factor for specific diseases.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the serum level of immunoglobulins in Bangladeshi dockyard labourers compared to healthy day labourers. One hundred dockyard labourers, age ranging from 19 to 42 years, were randomly recruited from different dockyards of Keranigonj, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The control group included 100 day labourers matched by age, sex and socio-economic status to that of dockyard labourers who were not exposed to environmental hazards of dockyard. Blood samples were analyzed for determining the serum levels of immunoglobulin (IgG, IgA & IgM) by turbidimetry method using an immunoglobulin kit. The serum concentration of IgA & IgG were found to be decreased, whereas that of IgM increased in dockyard labourers as compared to control group, but the differences were not significant (p>0.05). No significant relationship was found between the socio-demographic variables and immunoglobulin levels at 5% level of significance. But study with larger number of population is required for further evaluation of the relationship between the immune status and health hazards to confirm these findings. Key words: Dockyard labourers; Occupational exposure; Immunoglobulin. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/dujps.v9i2.7885 Dhaka Univ. J. Pharm. Sci. 9(2): 91-95, 2010 (December)
