Need Analysis on Development of Teaching Writing Materials ‘Genre’ Based on Gayo Local Culture

<p class="abstrak"><em>The research aims to analyze the needs of development teaching writing material ‘genre’ based on students’ local culture in Central Aceh. Mix methodologies are conducted in collecting the data, interviewing the teacher and giving the questionnaires to the students. The participants of this research are two English teachers and thirty students of tenth grade from two different Islamic High Schools in Central Aceh. The samples are taken by conducting purposive sampling. The result of the study showed three things; first, writing is the most difficult skill for students to be mastered, second, teaching material based on local culture has not been available yet, the last, teaching writing material ‘genre’ based on local culture is needed in order to improve students’ writing ability.</em></p>

AbstrakThis research is conducted in order to improve students’ writing ability by using intensive reading at tenth grade of SMAN 14 Kabupaten Tangerang. In conducting this research the writer used qualitative descriptive as the method of the research. In this research used purposive sampling with the sample was 36 participants. To collect and analyzed the data, the writer used the information from observation, students’ writing test and interview. The result of observation and interview in this research showed that intensive reading can improve students’ writing ability on descriptive text. The result also supported by students’ writing test. It can be seen from students’ pre-test and post-test. The average score of pre-test was 30.1 or 35% and the average score of post-test was 55.4 or 65% of 36 students. The average score of post-test showed higher with increase score 25.3 or 30% of 36 students than their pre-test. It means intensive reading can improve students’ writing ability especially on descriptive text. From the result, the writer concluded that teaching writing descriptive text using intensive reading at tenth grade of SMAN 14 Kabupaten Tangerang can improve their writing ability. For the teachers and the further researchers, it is recommended that to implement this method in English classroom to improve students’ writing skill.Kata Kunci: descriptive text, intensive reading, writing ability

Although writing has been learned by students since they start to learn English language but it still become the most difficult skill to be acquired than speaking, reading and listening. It is possibility caused by the students have limitation of knowledge about writing roles, lack of vocabulary, lack of motivation, lack of master of language structure, and lack of ability in generating a topic. In addition, writing is also called as the most complexity skill and it can be seen from the process of writing, rules that must be followed by students, and the influence of non-linguistics factors during of writing activity. Therefore, students must be serious to acquire this skill. In this article, the writer would like to introduce a suitable approach to teaching writing of English texts through process-genre approach. After reading this article, the writer expects that this article can help English teachers to apply this approach for teaching writing of English texts at Junior and Senior High Schools in Indonesia.

The implementation of ICT is very important in education. By using ICT, the process of teaching and learning is more effective and efficient. The objectives of this research were (1) to find out the attitudes of English teachers of public senior high schools in Palembang towards the use of ICT in the process of teaching and learning English, and (2) to find out the problems that commonly faced by English teachers towards the use of ICT in the process of teaching and learning English. This research was conducted at 16 public senior high schools in Palembang. There were 19 respondents who were selected by using �purposive sampling� technique. The data were collected by using questionnaire, interview, observation and documentation. The obtained data were analyzed in descriptive statistics. The statement checklist which used Likert scale was presented in the form of percentage while the results of answering descriptive questions was reported descriptively. The results showed that the attitudes of the teachers towards the use of ICT in the process of teaching and learning English were positive. However, some of them still faced many problems such as lack of ICT equipments, lack of competency, and also unsupported regulation from institution. Therefore, the facilities and infrastructures in each school and also the teachers� ability and knowledge about the use of ICT need to be increased.

This Research & Development (R&D) aims at developing materials in the form of a coursebook prototype for the tenth-grade students of senior high schools in Indonesia. Teacher interviews and students questionnaire were used to assess the users’ needs. The data revealed that the existing materials are not relevant to the students’ needs majored in studying Math and Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics). So there is a need for developing new materials by orienting to quality CLIL materials principles and task-based approach. In general, based on the validation checklists, the materials were considered reliable by the English teachers, the EFL material and language expert and the media expert. The final product was also considered acceptable by the students and teachers based on the questionnaires distributed after the limited-field tryout. The study resulted in three main products: Student Book, Teacher’s Guide, and Listening Audio CD.

<p>This research entitled: “The Effectiveness of Using Photograph in Teaching Writing” is intended to find out whether there is significantly different in writing ability between the experimental group and the control group.</p><p>This research employed experimental design. The participants of the study were the tenth-grade students at SMAN 1 Karau Kuala in the academic year 2013/2014. Two classes were used in this research. There were X-C as the Experimental group and X-D as the control group. The research instrument used was a writing test in the form of essay test. The data in this research were mainly gathered through the use of pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by measuring t-test and SPSS program to calculate the t-value from the score. The finding of the research shows that there is a significant difference between teaching writing by using photograph and teaching writing without using photograph. After the treatments, the mean is 75.43 the standard deviation is 9.370 the df is 44, and the significance is 0.00. If the significance is smaller than 0.05, it means there is a significant difference between teaching writing by using photograph and teaching writing without using photograph. </p>

In several schools in Central Aceh, students’ average in writing is about 71 from the minimum score 70, it means that the students are still weak in writing. One of the problem is students are unfamiliar with topic in writing genre. This study aims to improve students’ skill in writing by developing the English teaching material in genre based on Gayo local culture. Before developing the material, the writers observed some schools in Central Aceh about students’ problem in writing English. After getting the data abaout students’ problem, the writers designed the teaching material in genre based on Gayo Local culture. The next step is modifying the teaching material and it should be validated by some expert. The valid design then disseminate to some Madrasah Aliyah in central Aceh. All the stage in this research namely 4D stage. Data collected in this study is Lesson Plan and Material development validation sheet. The result of this study is a handbook of text types (genre) based on Gayo local culture. Developed teaching materials are expected to improve students’ writing ability.

This research was intended to find out whether or not there was a significant influence of running dictation on students’ descriptive text writing ability and to find out students’ responses toward running dictation method used for improving students in writing descriptive text. The research methodology was a quasi-experimental design. The population of this research was the tenth-grade students during the first semester of SMA Negeri 1 Jalan Cagak. The data from pre-test and post-test were analyzed by using SPSS 22.00. The data from questionnaires were analyzed by using a Likert Scale. The computation results of Independent Sample t-test it was obtained that Sig = 0.006 and α = 0.05. It means Ha is accepted because Sig < α = 0.05. It can be concluded there is a significant influence of running dictation method on students’ descriptive text writing ability. Furthermore, the results of questionnaires showed that most of the students (80%) gave positive responses toward running dictation method in writing descriptive text. It can be put forward that Running Dictation is effectively used for teaching writing descriptive text, the students are motivated, enjoyable to learn and their interest through English learning especially writing is rising.

The purpose of the study was to develop a learning model on writing, based on reflection strategy. The strategy would allow the students to read the text then develop the main idea. Therefore the problem of this research : (1) what kind of learning model that can develop the students writing ability? (2) is the using of the strategy effective to develop students competence in writing? (3) in what level are the students interest toward the using of a strategy in writing subject? This development research consisted of some steps, they are (1) need analysis (2) model design (3) implementation (4) model evaluation. The need analysis was applied through discussion among the writing lecturers to create a learning model for writing subject. To see the effectiveness of the model, an experiment would be delivered for one class. The instrument and learning material would be validated by the experts. The research used development design. The researcher would do need analysis, creating prototype, content validation, and limited empiric experiment to the sample. In each step, there should be an assessment and revision to the drafts before continue to the next steps. The second stage, the prototype would be tested empirically to four classes at STKIP YPUP for English Department. Implementing the test greatly was done through the action research and followed by evaluation and validation from the experts.

The aim of this study are to find out teachers’ perception toward Lesson Writer in developing English teaching Materials and to investigate teachers’ difficulties in using Lesson Writer to develop English teaching material. The sample of the study consisted of three English teachers. In this study the teachers focused on developing English teaching materials for the tenth grade of TKJ or Computer and Networking Program. The data collection used in this research was questionnaire and interview. The results of this study are the teachers have positive perception toward the implementation of Lesson Writer in developing English teaching materials, however in using Lesson Writer the teachers faced difficulties such as readiness of technology, limited teaching resources to be uploaded in Lesson Writer, and error server in log in Lesson Writer.

This research uses descriptive qualitative research. The participants of the research are the English teacher and students of X-A class of SMAN 1 Jiwan. The research uses purposive sampling technique. The techniques which are used to collect the data are observation, interview, and documentation. While, the techniques of the data analysis are: data condensation, data display, and conclusion and verification. The results of this research are </span><span style="font-size: 9pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">the teacher prepares syllabus, <em>RPP</em>, and the papers of picture Sandwich Graphic Organizer. The steps are pre-activities, whilst-activities, and post-activities.
