With their own distinctive characteristics, stylistic devices (SDs) play an important role in expressing the contents of literary works in general and novels in particular. This study is aimed at identifying lexical SDs and syntactical SDs in the novel series The Lord of The Rings and investigating loss and gain in terms of lexis, structure and meaning in their Vietnamese translational equivalents. The lexical SDs discovered include simile, repetition, metaphor and personificatio, whereas the only syntactical SD found is the rhetorical question. The study has applied the translation shift theory of Catford [1] [2] to explain what underlies loss and gain, which are inevitable phenomena in translation. The research results show that loss and gain in meaning originate from loss and gain in lexis as well as in structure. It is hoped that the findings can be useful for SDs teaching and learning as well as English-Vietnamese translation. Key words: Stylistic devices; The Lord of The Rings; loss and gain; translational equivalents; translation shifts.

The article considers the research results of Maik Yohansen’s “The Adventures of MacLayston, Harry Rupert, and Others”. The work is adventurous with the inherent intricate storylines, fast-paced events, exotics, ect. in this genre. The universal element of the novel is the travels. The novel was published in separate editions by the author’s plan, and it gives reason to determine this work as a first Ukrainian print series (a feuilleton novel, a novel with a sequel). The article states the defining feature of an artistic text is its intermedia, that manifests in the orientation at the methods or the silent movie not only at the level of the text structure, the features of the modeling heroes, the use of plug-in elements, the teasers and trailers that are not peculiar to the literary works. There are a lot of cinematic techniques in the novel, in particular, each section is perceived as a separate series, which is based on the cinematic principle of the parallel editing of the different storylines’ episodes. The graphically highlighted messages, document texts, announcements, fragments of notes to the song and even constructivist pictures of Vadym Meller are embedded in the text in M. Johansen’s novel. A cinematic combination reception when a detail in an episode makes the switch to another storyline (series) is an interesting artistic find in the text. The article studies the dialogues in the novel which are very shot like the silent movie scripts. A big part of a novel is descriptions of the actions of the heroes, but without detailing them so the product is perceived as a set of libretto, themes, ideas that would be rendered by the movie master. The writer introduces a new living space and unusual characters for Ukrainian literature (a rich heiress who travels incognito; her mentally defective brother who enjoys dressing women’s dresses; ethiopians, carters, sailors, detectives, prostitutes, hunters of exotic animals, etc.) who are in different countries and on different continents (America, England, Africa, France, Ukraine). There is no detailed portrait description of any of the characters in the work, a separate detail, in which the hero is different among the others, is noted. The characters are not clearly described which can be interpreted as a play with the canons of the silent cinema which scripts were created to order by a director for a specific actor.

The aim of the article is to analyse the elements of folk poetics in the novel Pleasant things. Utopia by T. Bołdak-Janowska. The category of folklore is understood in a rather narrow way, and at the same time it is most often used in critical and literary works as meaning a set of cultural features (customs and rituals, beliefs and rituals, symbols, beliefs and stereotypes) whose carrier is the rural folk. The analysis covers such elements of the work as place, plot, heroes, folk system of values, folk rituals, customs, and symbols. The description is conducted based on the analysis of source material as well as selected works in the field of literary text analysis and ethnolinguistics. The analysis shows that folk poetics was creatively associated with the elements of fairy tales and fantasy in the studied work, and its role consists of – on the one hand – presenting the folk world represented and – on the other – presenting a message about the meaning of human existence.

The article is devoted to the perception of K.I. Chukovsky’s works by a famous English writer G.K. Chesterton. K.I. Chukovsky was one of the first to point out the ambiguity of the literary works by the English writer and called his journalistic activity more convincing. Describing G.K. Chesterton’s essays, K.I. Chukovsky believed that the writer is second to none in this genre. He praised G.K. Chesterton’s journalistic talent in responding to all the phenomena of contemporary social life. K.I. Chukovsky considered it obligatory for the Russian readers to familiarize themselves with the critical works of the English author. In the essay «Gilbert Chesterton. Manalive» (1924) K.I. Chukovsky substantiated why, for all the variety of genre forms that G.K. Chesterton used, Russian readers were familiar with only a few of his works. K.I. Chukovsky’s critical attitude to the novel «Manalive» is explained by his rejection of G.K. Chesterton’s utopian attitude to the social situation in England at the turn of the XIX–XX centuries. In G.K. Chesterton’s works K.I. Chukovsky saw a simulation of revolutionary pathos that did not solve pressing issues of social disorder.

AbstractScholars have been investigating detective stories and crime fiction mostly as literary works reflecting the societies that produced them and the movement from modernism to postmodernism. However, these genres have generally been neglected by literary geographers. In the attempt to fill such an epistemological vacuum, this paper examines and compare the function and importance of geography in both classic and late 20th century detective stories. Arthur Conan Doyle’s and Agatha Christie’s detective stories are compared to Mediterranean noir books by Manuel Montalbán, Andrea Camilleri and Jean Claude Izzo. While space is shown to be at the center of the investigations in the former two authors, the latter rather focus on place, that is space invested by the authors with meaning and feelings of identity and belonging. From this perspective, the article argues that detective investigations have become a narrative medium allowing the readership to explore the writer’s representation/construction of his own territorial context, or place-setting, which functions as a co-protagonist of the novel. In conclusion, the paper suggests that the emerging role of place in some of the later popular crime fiction can be interpreted as the result of writer’s sentiment of belonging and, according to Appadurai’s theory, as a literary and geographical discourse aimed at the production of locality.
