Qualities of a good essay: an assessment of the writings of Nigerian undergraduates

This research sought to discover the capabilities of Nigerian undergraduates in handling the salient characteristics of essay in English. Such qualities as clarity, economy, simplicity, unity and coherence were the variables in the assessment. The study was conducted within the framework of the theory of descriptive linguistics and its sub-discipline of stylistics. Four topics representing argumentative, descriptive, expository and narrative essays were given to students for each of them to voluntarily choose one and write on in a strictly supervised writing test. All the essays were marked on the above stated variables. Critical case sampling strand of the purposive sampling was used to select four outstanding essays each representing one of the four departments of the Akwa Ibom State University of Nigeria. Paragraph and sentence formed some of the units of analysis. It was found out that the four subjects whose essays were analyzed proved their mettle in producing readable and creative prose in the four genres with some room for improvement. It is suggested that the Use of English programme in Nigerian universities should be extended from one to two years in addition to regular practice in writing by students and feedback from lecturers.

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to determine the perception of 2017 Geography Education Department students of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Medan State University, on the implementation of online-based examinations in the Statistics course. This research is a descriptive study, with the population being all students of the 2017 Geography Education Department, Medan State University. Sampling in this study used a purposive sampling technique, where the sample in this study were all C class students of the 2017 Geography Education Department, Faculty of Social Sciences, Medan State University, totaling 26 students. Data collection techniques through the distribution of questionnaires (questionnaires) to respondents, then the data were analyzed through several stages, namely editing, coding, scoring, and measuring perceptions with the interval scale method, the mean value, mean, median, mode, and standard deviation. The results of this study are to show that the perception of Class C students of the Department of Geography Education on the implementation of online-based exams in the Statistics subject is good or has a positive value.Keywords: Perception, online exams, and statistics  AbstrakTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui persepsi mahasiswa Jurusan Pendidikan Geografi Angkatan 2017 Fakultas Ilmu Sosial Universitas Negeri Medan terhadap pelaksanaan ujian berbasis online pada mata kuliah Statistik. Pengambilan sampel dalam penelitian ini menggunakan teknik purposive sampling, dimana sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh mahasiswa kelas C Jurusan Pendidikan Geografi Angkatan 2017 Fakultas Ilmu Sosial Universitas Negeri Medan sebanyak 26 mahasiswa. Teknik pengumpulan data dengan melalui penyebaran kuesioner (angket) kepada responden, kemudian data dianalisis melalui beberapa tahap yaitu editing, coding, scoring, dan pengukuran persepsi dengan metode skala interval, nilai rata-rata (mean), median, modus, dan standar deviasi. Hasil penelitian ini adalah menunjukkan bahwasanya persepsi mahasiswa kelas C Jurusan Pendidikan Geografi terhadap pelaksanaan ujian berbasis online pada mata kuliah Statistik adalah baik atau bernilai positif.Kata Kunci: Persepsi, ujian online, dan statistik

This study aimed to test empirically the effect of quality of school life and resilience on academic stress in university students. The subjects of this study were bachelor degree students of Semarang’s Walisongo Islamic State University, who were in their second to eighth semester. Using technique of Purposive Sampling, the samples of 318 students were gathered. Data were collected using Quality of School Life Scale, Resilience Scale, and Academic Stress Scale. The data obtained were analyzed with multiple regression technique. The result of the analysis showed that quality of school life and resilience has effect on academic stress both partially and simultaneously.  Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menguji secara empiris pengaruh quality of school life dan resiliensi terhadap stres akademik pada mahasiswa. Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa S1 UIN Walisongo Semarang semester dua sampai delapan. Pengambilan sampel dilakukan dengan teknik Purposive Sampling. Dengan teknik tersebut diperoleh sampel 318 mahasiswa. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan skala Quality of School Life, skala Resiliensi, dan skala Stres Akademik. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah regresi ganda. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa quality of school life dan resiliensi berpengaruh terhadap stres akademik baik secara parsial maupun secara simultan.

Abstrak. Pelayanan yang dilakukan oleh perpustakaan secara langsung ataupun tidak akan menimbulkan citra perpustakaan baik citra positif maupun negatif. Citra tersebut menimbulkan persepsi pengguna dan akhirnya membuat penilaian pengguna terhadap perpustakaan. Dalam penelitian ini penulis ingin mengetahui mengenai tingkat persepsi pengguna atas kualitas layanan perpustakaan perguruan tinggi negeri yang meliputi dimensi affect of service, information control, library as place. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif yang sifatnya deskriptif dan teknik pengumpulan data kuisioner dengan teknik sampling nonrandom sampling dengan kriteria purposive sampling di Perpustakaan Institut Teknologi Sepuluh November (ITS), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) dan Perpustakaan Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA). Teknik pengolahan data yakni dengan membuat nilai rata-rata di setiap indikator kualitas layanan. Konsep kualitas layanan yang digunakan adalah LibQual+™ yang terdiri dari affect of service, information control, dan library as place. Hasilnya bahwa nilai rata-rata penilaian pengguna pada kinerja ketiga perpustakaan di atas adalah baik. Untuk perpustakaan UNESA dan ITS, urutan penilaian dari yang terbaik oleh pengguna adalah library as place, information control dan affect of service. Urutan penilaian pengguna atas dimensi yang terbaik pada perpustakaan Unair secara berturut-turut adalah library as place, affect of service, dan information control. Kata kunci: libqual, persepsi pengguna, perpustakaan perguruan tinggi Abstract. Services carried out by the library directly and will cause the image library of both positive and negative images. These images create the perception of users and ultimately make an assessment of the library users. In this study the authors wanted to know about the level of user perception on the quality of library services such as affect of service, information control, and library as place. This study uses a quantitative approach that are descriptive and questionnaire data collection techniques with nonrandom sampling with purposive sampling criteria in the library of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Universitas Airlangga (Unair) and the library of the State University of Surabaya (UNESA). Data processing techniques to make the average value in every indicator of service quality. The concept of service quality used is LibQual + ™ consisting of affect of service, information control, and library as place. The result is that the average value assessment on the performance of the three library users above is good. For UNESA and ITS libraries, order an assessment of the best by the user is a library as place, information control and affect of service. In Unair library, user ratings on the dimensions of the order of the best in a row is a library as place, affect of service, and information control. Keywords: libqual, user perception, university libraries

Penelitian ini bertujuan mesndeskripsikan peranan, program, hambatan, upaya BEM UNY dalam meningkatkan civic skills aktivisnya. Pendekatan penelitian menggunakan kualitatif. Penentuan subjek dengan purposive sampling. Teknik pengumpulan data observasi, dokumentasi, wawancara. Teknik keabsahan data teknik triangulasi. Teknik analisis dengan  reduksi data, sajian data, dan penarikan simpulan. Hasil penelitian (1) peranan BEM UNY dalam meningkatan civic skills adalah Partner kampus, fasilitator, pengabdian, selain itu BEM UNY mengalami dilema terkait kaderisasi dan diversifikasi gerakan. (2) program BEM UNY yang dapat meningkatkan civic skills, forum sekretaris kementerian, lembar pemantauan, sekolah kader bangsa, sosialisasi 100 hari kinerja BEM,  dialog kebangsaan. (3) hambatan internal  upaya meningkatkan civic skills, keterbatasan sumber daya manusia, banyaknya program kerja, keuangan. Hambatan eksternal, hal teknis dan perubahan kondisi sosial politik. (4) Upaya internal mengatasi hambatan peningkatan civic skill, perekrutan kader secara sistematik, mengutamakan program kerja, menjalin kemitraan. The results of the study (1) UNY BEM role in improving the civic skills are Partner campus, facilitator, devotion, besides UNY BEM has a dilemma related to the regeneration and diversification of movement. (2) UNY BEM program to improve civic skills, forum secretary ministry, monitoring sheets, school cadre nation, socialization 100 days performance of BEM, national dialogue. (3) internal barriers efforts to improve civic skills, limited human resources, the number of work programs, finances. External barriers, technical issues and changes in political and social conditions. (4) Efforts to overcome internal barriers to increase civic skills, recruitment of cadres systematically, prioritize work program, a partnership. ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui:  (1). Hubungan antara antara koordinasi mata tangan, dan kaki terhadap kemampuan dig pada atlet bola voli putri Fortius. (2). Hubungan antara kelincahan terhadap kemampuan dig pada atlet bola voli putri Fortius. (3). Hubungan antara koordinasi mata tangan, kaki dan kelincahan pada kemampuan dig atlet bola voli putri Fortius. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode survey dengan teknik studi korelasional. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah para anggota klub bola voli puteri Universitas Negeri Jakarta dengan jumlah 45 atlet. Jumlah sampel sebayak 30 orang, sampel ditentukan dengan Purposive Sampling. Hasil penelitian menyimpulkan bahwa: (1). Terdapat hubungan yang positif antara koordinasi mata, tangan, kaki dengan hasil kemampuan dig. Variabel koordinasi mata, tangan, dan kaki memberikan sumbangan terhadap kemampuan dig sebesar 52,03%. (2). Terdapat hubungan yang positif antara kelincahan dengan hasil kemampuan dig. Variabel Kelincahan memberikan sumbangan terhadap kemampuan dig sebesar 43,96%. (3). Terdapat hubungan yang positif antara koordinasi mata, tangan, kaki dan kelincahan dengan hasil kemampuan dig secara bersama-sama. Variabel koordinasi mata, tangan, kaki dan kelincahan memberikan sumbangan terhadap kemampuan dig sebesar 55,81%. The relationship between eye, hand and foot coordination on dig ability in Fortius women's volleyball athletes. (2). The relationship between agility and ability to dig in the women's volleyball athlete Fortius. (3). The relationship between eye, hand and foot coordination and agility on the ability of Fortius women's volleyball athletes. The method used in this study was a survey method with correlational study techniques. The population in this study were members of the women's volleyball club Jakarta State University with a total of 45 athletes. The number of samples is 30 people, the sample is determined by purposive sampling. The results of the study concluded that: (1). There is a positive relationship between eye, hand, and foot coordination with the results of dig ability variables contribute to the dig ability results by 52.03% (2). There is a positive relationship between agility with the results of the ability to dig variable only contributes to the results of the dig capability of 43.96%. (3). There is a positive relationship between the coordination of eyes, hands, feet and agility with the results of the ability to dig together contribute to the results of the dig ability of 55.81%.  Keyword : Coordination Of Eyes Hands Feet, Agility, Ability To Dig

The objective of the research was to find out whether estafet strategy is effective  to improve students’ writing skill on descriptive text of the eleventh year students’ of SMAN 4 Palopo.  This research usedquasi experimental.The population of this research was the eleventh grade students of SMAN 4 Palopo. The number of population was 50 students. The sample were class XI PS 1 consisted of 25 students as experimental group and class XI PS 2 consisted of 25 students as control class.The sampling technique in this research was purposive sampling. The instrument of the research was writing test. The writers gave pretest and posttest to the students.  The result showed that the students` mean score of posttest in experimental group was 90.44 and pretest was 65.96. The mean score of posttest was higher than the mean score of pretest (90.44>65.96). While the mean score of posttest in control class was 75.76 and the mean score of pretest was 60.52. The mean score of posttest was higher than the mean score of pretest (75.76>60.52). The result of statistical analysis the experimental group for level of significance 0.05 with degree of freedom (df) = 24; the probability value was smaller than α 0.00<0.5 and the result of statistical analysis the control class in which the probability value was lower than α .0.00>0.05. As a result, there was a significant difference in writing achievement between the students who are taught by using estafet strategy and those who are taught by non-using estafet strategy. Based on the result of this research, the writers concluded that estafet strategy upgrades the students’ writing.

ABSTRACTThis study is intended to acquire empirical evidence regarding the impact of the teacher's Indirect Written Corrective Feedback on students' writing ability of explanation texts. Fifty six students enrolling at a high school in Jakarta were selected as the sample. They were separately distributed in the experimental class and the control class that respectively contained 28 students. Purposive sampling was utilized to recognize who the research subjects were and what level of their competence was for inclusion in this study. A quasi-experimental design, which is a subpart of a quantitative method, was employed. The data were assembled by running a writing test in the pre-test and post-test sections, whose results were followed by normality and homogeneity tests. The findings showed that the experimental class’ post-test outcome was 64.71, while the control class’ post-test was 58.25. Since the t-value surpasses the t-table (2.502>1.675), it indicates that the teacher's Indirect Written Corrective Feedback has a significant effect on improving students' writing explanation texts.ABSTRAKStudi ini bertujuan untuk memperoleh bukti riil terkait pengaruh dari umpan balik tertulis tidak langsung oleh guru terhadap kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks eksplanasi. 56 siswa yang bersekolah di sebuah sekolah menengah atas terpilih sebagai sampel. Siswa tersebut terbagi dalam kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol, yang masing-masing kelas berisikan 28 orang. Oleh karenanya, purposive sampling diterapkan karena peneliti sudah mengetahui siapa saja subjek penelitian dan kompetensi apa saja yang dimiliki. Desain kuasi-eksperimen yang merupakan sub-bagian dari metode kuantitatif digunakan oleh peneliti. Data diperoleh dengan mengadakan ujian tes tulis yang terdapat pada pra-tes dan pasca-tes yang diikuti dengna uji normalitas dan uji homogenitas. Hasil temuan menunjukkan bahwa rata-rata hasil pasca-tes yang diraih oleh siswa di kelas eksperimen sebesar 64.71, sedangkan 58.25 adalah hasil dari siswa kelas kontrol. Karena nilai t hitung melampaui nilai t tabel (2.502>1.675), maka hal tersebut menandakan umpan balik tertulis tidak langsung oleh guru memiliki dampak yang signifikan dalam meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa menulis teks eksplanasi.

Academic stress is a subjective perception of an academic condition or a response experienced by students in the form of negative physical reactions, behaviors, thoughts, and emotions that arise due to school or academic demands. During a pandemic Covid 19 most of earning activities becomes online. The aim of this research is to determine the level of academic stress among students in Guidance and Counseling Department, Semarang State University during the pandemic. The method used is descriptive qualitative research. This research conducted interviews to collect data by using purposive sampling. The results  show that students experience symptoms of academic stress symptoms that affect their physical, emotional, behavioral, and thoughts as well as several factors that influence academic stress both in themselves (internally) and in the environment and circumstances (externally). The conclusion of this study is the respondents' stress level is quite high or increases when they get assignments from the lecturers. Keywords: college students, academic stress, pandemic

Abstract Fictional universes can be treated as discrete units of analysis in which we see the operation of international relations theory. This article discusses insights gleaned from a course created at Sonoma State University called “Gender and Geopolitics in Science Fiction and Fantasy,” in which feminist theory and international relations approaches are integrated, and science fiction and fantasy texts serve as the mechanism through which to examine the key themes and questions. This article provides an overview of the pedagogy to highlight the usefulness of speculative fiction in teaching. Each of the fictional universes is treated as a separate system where gender and political dynamics manifest in ways that observers of international relations will recognize. The core texts are Battlestar Galactica, Game of Thrones, Jessica Jones, Star Trek, Misfits, and Watchmen. The major theories and approaches explored here have implications for gender studies and feminist theory, the concepts of metaphor and allegory, and game theory.

The purpose of researche is to know the effect of celebrity endorser and video advertising on brand image face lightening product of Garnier Lingh Complete Super Foam. This research used causative form, the population in this research were students of State University of Padang. Number of samples were decided base on hair et. As many as 100 people and were chosen by using proportional sampling method and purposive sampling technic. Data were used is primer data were provided through questionnaire shared to students of State University of Padang based on predetermined criteria. Analysis method was used is multiple regression by using spss 2. The result of this research shows (1) celebrity endorser and video advertising any significant effect to brand image, (2) celebrity endosrser have no significant affect on brand image, (3) audio visual advertising have significant effect on brnad image     Keywords: celebrity endorser, video edvertising, brand image
