The relevance of the study of the problem of the development of emotional intelligence and emotional-volitional self-regulation is determined by the increasing level of requirements for professionally significant personality traits of police officers. The ability for self-regulation and a high level of emotional skills presented in the structure of emotional intelligence allows a person to integrately process the information received and use environmental stimuli for cognitive assessment, making conscious decisions in a situation associated with emotional response. Mastering the skills of emotional-volitional self-regulation contributes to the achievement of significant results in professional activity, socio-psychological adaptation and self-realization. The aim of the study was to analyze the psychological factors of the development of the emotional intelligence of police officers, the ability to emotional-volitional self-regulation and to establish the nature of the relationship between the indicators of emotional intelligence and the indicators of self-regulation. The empirical study was conducted on the basis of a sample of male police officers enrolled in the primary vocational training program as a police officer. The psychodiagnostic procedure involved 150 respondents, of which there were experimental and control groups, 40 people each. The study used techniques aimed at identifying the level of development of emotional intelligence and the ability to self-regulation: Emotional Intelligence Research Methods Russian-language version of the MSCEIT V2.0 test by J. Mayer, P. Salovey, and D. Caruso as adapted by E.A. Sergienko, I.I. Wind; R. Cattell's 16-factor personality questionnaire - form C; questionnaire V.I. Morosanova Style of self-regulation of behavior. The results of the study show that changing the tasks and technology of teaching aimed at the development of emotional intelligence ensures the development of significant abilities. As a result of the formative experiment, shifts in the values of indicators of the use of emotions in problem solving (t = 2.03; p ≤ 0.05), understanding and analysis of emotions, the general level of emotional intelligence (t = 3.55; p ≤ 0.001), emotional volitional self-regulation (t = 2.74; p ≤ 0.01). An increased number of positive correlations between the values of indicators of the emotional, communicative and intellectual spheres of a person was revealed. The statistically significant dynamics of indicators of emotional intelligence and self-regulation, reliable relationships with the signs of personality traits, allow predicting the further formation of competencies in the field of emotional-volitional self-regulation.

Background. One of the debated issues of modern psychology is the characteristics of the emotional sphere in the structure of a person’s intellectual and personal potential. Its most important component is emotional intelligence (EI), which can be studied from different methodological standpoints. It makes it urgent to develop appropriate diagnostic techniques. The objective: based on testing of the Russian-language version of the questionnaire “Trait Emotional Intelligent Questionnaire” (TEIQue-SF), the problem of understanding EI as an ability or personality trait, and the relationship of EI with uncertainty tolerance (UT) and emotional creativity (EC) is considered. Design. EI as a trait was measured using the approved TEI questionnaire (N= 482); as ability — using the EI questionnaire (N= 230); as attitude to uncertainty — using the new uncertainty tolerance questionnaire (N= 61); as emotional creativity — using the OEC questionnaire (N= 231). Research results. For the TEI questionnaire, a four-factor structure, similar to the original English version was confirmed. It included the following scales: “well-being”; “emotionality”; “sociality” and “self-control”. Their convergent validity with the scales of the EmIn questionnaire has been demonstrated. Relationship between tolerance to uncertainty and emotional creativity has been established, which makes it possible to talk about the positive role of emotional intelligence in personal and style self-regulation. Conclusions. The data obtained allow us to consider the psychometric characteristics of the Russian-language version of the TEI questionnaire satisfactory. The revealed positive relationship between the characteristics of EI according to the methods of TEI and EmIn, as well as links with EC, suggests the possibility of a broader interpretation of EI as a trait but also does not allow to deny its interpretation as an ability. Differences in methodological approaches regarding understanding the construct of EI do not prevent the possibility of measuring it as a variable of a person’s intellectual and personal potential interconnected with the attitude towards uncertainty and with the creative potential of a person.

The paper considers the concept of professional formation and its projection on the professional training and professional activity of the prospective teacher through the concepts of formation and development. As a result of the analysis of existing views on the phases, stages and periods of professional formation, the main ones were identified, which are due to the time frame - the period before choosing the institution where professional training will be carried out, the actual professional education and the period of it. Having analyzed the set of competencies (subject, general pedagogical, professional-communicative, managerial, innovative, reflective) provided by the Federal State Educational Standard in relation to the teachers profession, as well as referring to the models of Hard-skills and Soft-skills, we identified indicators (skills) of the professional development of the prospective teacher and invited the 3rd-year students of the Institute of Russian Language and Literature of the Volgograd State Socio-Pedagogical University to evaluate these skills in the order of their significance. The assessment was carried out on a 5-point scale, where 1 point is an absolutely insignificant indicator, 2 - rather insignificant, 3 - rather significant, 4 - significant, 5 - very significant. As a result, we were able to build their gradation and divide them by areas, as well as allocate 3 levels in the process of professional development. Taking into account these levels, we considered how the educational environment can influence the professional development of future teachers through educational, extracurricular activities and through the environment.

The author has studied the peculiarities of academic motivation of final-year cadets (n=323) of higher education institutions with specific educational conditions. It has been determined that the dominant motivation for their professional training is internal motivation. They make independent decisions about their professional activities and seek to continue their service within the National Police. Adequate and situational types of professional motivation are typical for cadets. Respondents are aiming for theoretical knowledge. The motives for the professional activities of final-year cadets do not affect their motivation to acquire theoretical knowledge, but they affect the acquisition of professional skills and abilities. The “romantic halo” of the profession remains in the perception of the profession by final-year cadets, but the material component also becomes important. The status of the profession in society and its material remuneration, as well as the curiosity of the chosen profession have significant influence on the motivation of future professional activities of fourth-year cadets. The motivating factor for internally motivated cadets is a sense of effectiveness, as well as status and state’s high salary for labor of law enforcement professionals. Externally positively motivated cadets in case of the decrease in the status of the profession, unrealized career ambitions or the reduction of the material rewards of law enforcement officers may begin to perform their duties formally or may leave the service. Externally negatively motivated cadets are not interested in performing professional duties. On the basis of the obtained data, the author has concluded on the importance of mentoring in the process of professional development of young specialists and the continuation of professional training in the system of postgraduate education and service training of police officers. The author has emphasized the importance of further motivation of final-year cadets within professional activity, in particular the introduction of a “motivational” package for police officers by the state.

Effectiveness as an undercover operative or human source (informant) handler relies on the believability of police in fictious roles, yet the use of deception by law enforcement in covert fields of policing and criminal interviews remains relatively underexplored in the literature. Moreover, selection processes for these critical police roles do not currently include a test of deception ability. This study investigates the lie production and truth production ability of 50 Australian police officers-in-training by comparing their results on a game of deception with their personality traits as tested by the HEXACO-PI-R-100 item version, the Short-D3 and the MSCEIT. Results indicate that sex, age, dark triad traits and emotional intelligence have no relationship with either truth or lie production. HEXACO results indicate low social self-esteem was related to high lie production ability. Further research is needed to explore extraversion, social skills, and confidence as they relate to the credibility of a ‘storyteller’.

The first tendency is the increase of the general level of tension (the 16-PF scales: C, I, O, Q4 – all the quantitative indices have increased, p < 0.01, Student's t-test). The second tendency is a significant growth of the efficiency of personal characteristics providing self-regulation and voluntary behaviour (the 16-PF scales: E, G, H, Q3 are analogous to the first tendency; the SAV scale of the POI also reports a growth with high statistical values). Discussion: the respondents from the first group were born in 1972–1973. Prenatal maturation, babyhood, junior school, and early adolescent age took place in the epoch of a high degree of stability and succession in the development of society. The respondents from the second group were born in 1998–1999. The samples are separated by a generation. The second group (2016 testing) reports a high level of neuro-psychic tension during socio-psychological adaptation and, consequently, the growth of efforts in developing voluntary regulation of social behavior. Evidently, there is value of self-actualization in the new reality.
