Introduction: The aim of this study was to assess professors’ and students’ educational needs and implementation of serial workshops and then evaluate the effect of these educational workshops on the knowledge and practice of medical students.Method: Students’ educational needs and the clinical professors’opinion were used tocomplete the needs assessment process.120 Medical students participated in serial workshops. This program was applied to develop educational accountability program. In each workshop, students’ knowledge was evaluated by valid and reliable multiple-choice questions before andafterthe course. In some workshops, their performance was measured by the OSCE test.Descriptive analysisandpaired t- test were used to evaluate difference in students’ mean score.Finding: Results of before and after series of workshops in various areas revealed that workshop programs had a significant impact on the promotion of students’ knowledge (The mean score of students before and after workshops). Then,the evaluation of theirperformance through the OSCEtest was significant(P <0.05). Furthermore, students’ evaluation on workshops demonstrated that almost all of them were satisfied with the proportion of the content of the workshops, with the theme of the announced program, with the quantity of presented material in the workshop, withthe appropriateness of the content to future employment needs and the ability to create order in the meetings.According to professors’ opinion, number of errors in prescription, errors in radiography request and malpractice in resuscitation were decreased and students’ performance in clinical wards was approved.Conclusion: The results showed that training through workshops leads to increase the level of knowledge, function and satisfaction in the medical students. It is recommended that this method be used to improve the professional abilities of students based on educational needs.Application / Improvements: Looking ahead, we should consider strategies for leading changes in education and training. IntroductionThe COVID-19 pandemic has impacted students learning, with the time off resulting in students ‘de-skilling’, increasing concerns for upcoming observed structured clinical examinations. Foundation Year 1 (F1) doctors (F1s), despite being expected to teach, rarely receive formal preparation, with COVID-19 exacerbating opportunities to practice. As such, a national orthopaedic teaching programme was designed to provide F1s with opportunities to develop their teaching skills and to synergistically teach medical students how to perform clinical orthopaedic examinations.MethodsSix weekly sessions, each delivered by two newly qualified F1 tutors, on each joint examination were delivered online via Zoom Video Communications (USA). Presession and postsession multiple choice questions (MCQs) were provided to students to assess improvement in knowledge. Anonymous feedback forms were provided to both students and tutors.ResultsOf the 341 students that attended, 87.1% provided feedback. 86.2% felt that they had de-skilled due to time off, with a mean 15 weeks off from placement. Based on a 5-point Likert scale, students displayed a mean improvement in confidence (1.9±1.1, p<0.001) and MCQ scores (1.4±1.3, p<0.001) before and after the sessions. 91.6% and 95.3% agreed that the use of online teaching increased attendance and laid the foundation for practice. Of the six tutors, all reported improvement in confidence to teach and teaching skills.ConclusionWe demonstrate that online delivery of clinical orthopaedic examinations is effective, increasing the knowledge and confidence of students, while providing opportunities for F1s to teach. We present our findings to encourage similar teaching programmes to be adopted at other locations and specialties, to synergistically benefit students, doctors and ultimately, patients.

AbstractManaging adverse drug reactions (ADRs) is a challenge, especially because most healthcare professionals are insufficiently trained for this task. Since context-based clinical pharmacovigilance training has proven effective, we assessed the feasibility and effect of a creating a team of Junior-Adverse Drug Event Managers (J-ADEMs). The J-ADEM team consisted of medical students (1st–6th year) tasked with managing and reporting ADRs in hospitalized patients. Feasibility was evaluated using questionnaires. Student competence in reporting ADRs was evaluated using a case-control design and questionnaires before and after J-ADEM program participation. From Augustus 2018 to Augustus 2019, 41 students participated in a J-ADEM team and screened 136 patients and submitted 65 ADRs reports to the Netherlands Pharmacovigilance Center Lareb. Almost all patients (n = 61) found it important that “their” ADR was reported, and all (n = 62) patients felt they were taken seriously by the J-ADEM team. Although attending physicians agreed that the ADRs should have been reported, they did not do so themselves mainly because of a “lack of knowledge and attitudes” (50%) and “excuses made by healthcare professionals” (49%). J-ADEM team students were significantly more competent than control students in managing ADRs and correctly applying all steps for diagnosing ADRs (control group 38.5% vs. intervention group 83.3%, p < 0.001). The J-ADEM team is a feasible approach for detecting and managing ADRs in hospital. Patients were satisfied with the care provided, physicians were supported in their ADR reporting obligations, and students acquired relevant basic and clinical pharmacovigilance skills and knowledge, making it a win-win-win intervention.

Introduction: Awareness of pediatric cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is obligatory for every graduated medical student. In fact, only correct and effective Cardiopulmonary resuscitation can increase the survival rate of patients with cardiopulmonary arrest and since CPR techniques and maneuvers should be done in a specific way for children, it is important to evaluate the knowledge of pediatric resuscitation. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, multiple-choice questions were designed about basic and advanced pediatric cardiopulmonary resusitation (under 8 years) and 100 medical students enrolled in undergraduate training. Results were analyzed using the software SPSS 15. Results: The interns' advanced awareness was significantly less than the basic knowledge (P-Value < 0.001). The awareness of students who studied in CPR was higher than students who did not (P-Value < 0.027). Moreover, students who participated in the rehabilitation of children were more aware (P-Value < 0.002) and interns who attended the Heart Ward had a higher level of awareness (P-Value < 0.001). Conclusion: In general, results obtained from the interns' awareness in the present showed the importance of pediatric resuscitation training courses and participation in resuscitation operations. So, this training course should be considered as a training strategy course in the internship program.

BACKGROUND: The use of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has recently proposed the integration of ultrasound into undergraduate medical education. However, the evidence of learning tool for this integration has not been well studied. AIM: The aim of this study was to compare the levels of knowledge improvement of the 6th year medical students before and after receiving the POCUS training in two ways: By employing the traditional methods and by utilizing the new learning tool. METHODS: The practical ultrasound flashcards were developed by a Thai physician. In the study, the 6th year medical students were enrolled and randomized to become members of either the flashcard group or the control group. Participants in both groups attended a 4-week ultrasound training course. Before and after the training course, all students were evaluated using the multiple-choice questions. In addition, the subjects’ attitudes and perceptions about the flashcards were evaluated using a questionnaire. RESULTS: A total of 46 students participated in this study and were randomly assigned to either the flashcard group (n = 23) or the control group (n = 23). It was discovered that the students in the flashcard group had performed better on the POCUS knowledge post-test than those in the control group had. Most students had been satisfied with the flashcards (mean 5 Likert scores = 4.48). However, the students had rated their confidence score to perform POCUS at 3.96 out of 5.0. CONCLUSIONS: Medical students who used the ultrasound flashcards to learn POCUS had resulted in better knowledge scores rather than the others who attended the standard ultrasound training course only. However, it was not possible to evaluate the practical skills and the clinical decision-making processes in this study.

Background: Medical biostatistics has got an important role in the modern medical science curriculum. The present study was planned to assess the knowledge and attitude among medical graduates regarding the role and utility of biostatistics in medical science.Methods: A cross-sectional study among 120 medical students of MBBS final professional of Saraswati Medical College, Lucknow was conducted by using a pre-designed, pre-tested and semi-structured questionnaire. A Chi-square test was applied to find a statistical association. A p value of <0.05 is considered to be significant.Results: Most of the students considered biostatistics is important and helps them in their UG/PG curriculum and thesis/dissertation. Fifty-seven per cent of the study participants are aware of any software used in the analysis of data. Males used at least anyone statistical software more than females (p=0.017). The majority of males (70.3%) and females (67.4%) expressed that it is difficult to understand the concepts of biostatistics. Almost all males (97.30%) and majority females (84.80%) reported that biostatistics textbooks need to be written in simple language (p value=0.026).Conclusions: The role of biostatistics among medical students is of utmost importance as research purpose and importance is increasing in all domains of medical sciences, moreover, the basics of biostatistics should play a pivotal role in the current medical curriculum.

Abstrak: Kecemasan dialami oleh hampir semua orang di dunia, termasuk mahasiswa baru kedokteran. Mahasiswa baru kedokteran memiliki banyak stressor termasuk ujian yang menimbulkan kecemasan dan dapat mempengaruhi hasil ujian mereka. Sampai saat ini, hanya sedikit penyelidikan yang ditemukan menyelidiki fenomena ini. Di Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Sam Ratulangi, tidak ada yang meneliti fenomena tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menilai hubungan antara kecemasan dan hasil ujian semester 1 (UAS-1) mahasiswa baru program studi kedokteran umum tahun akademik 2012/2013 di Universitas Sam Ratulangi. Ini merupakan penelitian analitik potong lintang dengan metode survei dan sensus sebagai cara dalam pengambilan sampel. Sampel penelitian yang telah memenuhi kriteria inklusi dan ekslusi didapatkan berjumlah 298 orang dari 319 mahasiswa baru program studi kedokteran umum tahun akademik 2012/2013 di Universitas Sam Ratulangi. Populasi tersebut kemudian diberi informed consent, kuesioner data sosiodemografi, dan dinilai kecemasannya menggunakan Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS). Tidak ada hubungan yang signifikan antara kecemasan dan hasil UAS-1 (p=0,602>0,05). Ada hubungan yang signifikan antara jenis kelamin dan kecemasan (p=0,005<0,05) with odds ratio 2,91. 267 dari 298 mahasiswa (89,6%) mengalami kecemasan dengan kecemasan ringan sebagai tingkat kecemasan yang paling banyak ditemukan, berjumlah 177 orang (59,4%). Semua mahasiswa baru program studi kedokteran umum tahun akademik 2012/2013 di Universitas Sam Ratulangi mengalami kecemasan, terutama kecemasan ringan. Tidak terdapat hubungan antara kecemasan dengan hasil UAS-1 mereka, tetapi terdapat hubungan antara jenis kelamin dan kecemasan dengan kecenderuang hampir 3 kali bagi mahasiswa baru perempuan untuk mengalami kecemasan dibandingkan dengan mahasiswa baru laki-laki. Dibutuhkan penelitian lebih lanjut terkait coping strategies dan defense mechanism yang dilakukan mahasiswa untuk menganggulangi kecemasan mereka. Kata Kunci: Kecemasan, Ujian, Mahasiswa kedokteran.   Abstract: Anxiety is experienced by almost all people around the world including new medical students. New medical student experiences a lot of stressor include examination which cause anxiety to occur and may affect their exam results. Somehow, there are a few study found to date that has investigate this phenomenon. In Sam Ratulangi University, which is the nearest medical faculty, there is no research for such phenomenon. This study aims to investigate the relationship between anxiety and new medical student’s achievement on their last exam in Medical Faculty of Sam Ratulangi University. This is an analytic research using a survey method with census as the option of sampling. However, the research samples are who meet inclusion category and not in the exclusion category. The nearest samples are in Sam Ratulangi University who are given questioners to measure their anxiety by using Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) before their exam and to collect their sosiodemograpic data as well. There is no significant relationship between anxiety and their last exam results (p=0,602>0,05), but there is a significant relationship between gender and anxiety (p=0,005<0,05) with odds ratio 2,91. According to anxiety test results, 267 of 298 grade-1 medical students (89,6%) present an anxiety and the most prevalence anxiety level is mild anxiety with total 177 people (59,4%). In conclusion, almost all grade-1 new medical students in Medical Faculty of Sam Ratulangi University experienced anxiety with mild anxiety as the most prevalence anxiety level. There is no significant relationship between anxiety and their last exam results, but there is a significant relationship between gender and anxiety with almost 3 times for new female medical students experiencing anxiety than new male medical students. Further research is needed to investigate coping strategies and defense mechanisms which may be used to cope with their anxiety. Keywords: Anxiety, Exam, Medical Student

Integrated neuromuscular training (INT) showed benefits for improving fundamental movement skills (FMS). However, the INT health-related fitness (HRF) effects are lacking. The current study aimed to determine the effects of INT implemented during physical education (PE) in a primary school in the Republic of Serbia on HRF in female children. The sample consisted of 72 healthy girls who were divided into the intervention (EG: n = 37; mean ± SD: age = 8.17 ± 0.31) and control (CG: n = 35; age = 8.11 ± 0.31) groups. The EG and CG performed the INT program and traditional PE activities two times per week within the first ~15 min of PE class, respectively. The Fitnessgram battery tests assessed the HRF (body composition, cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular fitness, and flexibility) before and after the program. After eight weeks, the EG significantly reduced all fat measures, while the CG decreased only triceps skinfold but to a smaller extent (F = 5.92, p < 0.02, ŋ2 = 0.09). Both groups significantly improved the performance of almost all muscular fitness tests (curl-ups, trunk lift, push-ups); however, the EG increased the push-ups more than the CG (F = 9.01, p < 0.01, ŋ2 = 0.14). The EG additionally improved the modified pull-ups (F = 14.09, p < 0.01, ŋ2 = 0.19) and flexed arm hang (F = 28.82, p < 0.01, ŋ2 = 0.33) tests. The flexibility and cardiorespiratory endurance of both groups did not significantly change after eight weeks. This approach of exercise showed positive acceptance and relatively good results after only eight weeks.

Abstract Senior mentoring programs have been established that provide medical students exposure to a community-dwelling older adult mentor. The goal of these programs is to expose students to healthy older adults, increase knowledge of geriatrics, and prepare them to care for an aging population. However, even while participating in a senior mentoring program, health professions students still demonstrate some discriminatory language towards older adults (e.g., Gendron, Inker, & Welleford, 2018). In fact, research suggests ageist practices occur, intentionally or not, among all health professions and within assisted living and long-term care facilities (e.g., Bowling, 1999; Dobbs et al., 2008; Kane & Kane, 2005). There is reason to believe that how we feel about other older adults is a reflection of how we feel about ourselves as aging individuals. As part of an evaluation of a Senior Mentoring program, we found that students’ attitudes towards older adults were not significantly improved (t (92) = .38, p = .70). To further explore this, we collected subsequent qualitative data. Specifically, we asked students to respond to the open-ended prompt before and after completing their senior mentoring program: How do you feel about your own aging? Our findings have revealed just how complex students’ views towards aging and elderhood are, pointing to a need to develop a theoretical framework for how these views are formed. Thus, the results of this qualitative grounded theory study illustrate the stages of development medical students’ progress through as they come to accept themselves as aging humans.

The Covid-19 induced economic crisis has significantly affected almost all businesses from nearly every sector, causing severe financial problems, lack of cash assets, and decrease of revenues. In this context, the economic entities were forced to look for adjustment and rescue solutions of their activities. One possible solution for the recovery and reorganization of economic entities’ activities is demerger. This paper evaluates the impact of demerger upon the sustainable development of economic entities in terms of economic efficiency and financial performances. To achieve this goal, a statistical analysis of profitability ratios before and after the demerger, as well as a structural analysis of 268 demerger projects for the April 2012–April 2021 period, were performed. The results attest there are no significant differences between the ex-ante and ex-post financial performances. However, demerger seems to have a positive effect upon analyzed companies helping them to overcome economic hardships, rethink their business strategies, and continue their activity in the medium and long-term time horizon.

Abstract Background Otolaryngology (ENT), plastic surgery, ophthalmology and dermatology are medical specialties which tend to receive less coverage in UK medical school curricula compared to larger, generalist specialties. As a result, there are fewer opportunities for medical students to learn and to cultivate an interest. There are numerous papers that report concerns about junior doctors’ ability to manage conditions within these specialties, which may jeopardise patient safety. The aim of our pilot project was to increase medical students’ interest and knowledge of ENT, plastic surgery, ophthalmology and dermatology. In addition to describing our project, we present and discuss literature on UK undergraduate education in these specialties and its impact on preparedness of junior doctors and future career choices. Methods One hundred twelve final year medical students at Newcastle University were invited to take part in a voluntary two-part (written and clinical) exam, in which prizes could be won and all participants would receive a certificate of participation. We distributed two online surveys to the students, one administered before the exam and one afterwards. Data was collected regarding the students’ motivation for entering the prize exam and the students’ baseline interest and knowledge in these specialties before and after the prize exam. Free-text responses were collected about the students’ opinion of the project and whether participation was beneficial. Results Sixteen students participated in the exam. There was a statistically significant increase in the students’ knowledge in ENT (p < 0.000), plastic surgery (p < 0.000), ophthalmology (p < 0.028) and dermatology (p < 0.012) after participation in the exam, but not in their interest levels. ENT was the preferred specialty of our cohort. The students reported that they found participation beneficial to their learning, particularly receiving exam feedback and explanations to exam questions. Conclusions This pilot project was a useful intervention in increasing medical students’ knowledge in these specialties, but not in their levels of interest. It also demonstrates that medical students are willing to participate in voluntary initiatives (in their spare time) to gain more learning opportunities and that medical students value timely exam feedback to guide their revision.
