This study was conducted to investigate and compare the growth performance of four Tilapia strains in hapa nursing with the aim to find out the best strain of tilapia. The research was conducted by four treatments with five replicates each. The tilapia fry were collected from, BFRI source from BFRI HQ, Mymensingh stocked in Treatment-1; unknown source from Hi-Tech Tilapia Hatchery Dagoanbhuiya, Feni in Treatment-2, Philipine strain from Green Field Tilapia Hatchery, Laxmipur in Treatment-3 and fry from Breeding Cohort, Sonar Bangla Hatchery, Bamna, Barguna in Treatment-4. The Individual stocking weight (g) of fry was average 0.01g. The fries were stocked in 12 hapa at same stocking density of 1200 fish/m2. Each of the hapa was 2m × 1m × 1m size and fixed in an earthen ponds. Supplementary feed with 31.29% of protein level consisting of rice bran (25%), mustard oil cake (15%), wheat flour (30%) and fish meal (30%) was given at the rate of 40% of their body weight per day manually, four times a day at the beginning of the experimental period and reduced to 25% of their body weight and continued up to harvesting period. The results showed that fry of Treatment-4 strain was the best strain and had significantly (p < 0.05) higher final mean body weight (FMBW), mean body weight gain (MBWG), specific growth rate (SGR) (9.75%), gross yield (GY) (2.13) and Net yield (NY) (2.12) than the Treatment-1 , Treatment-2 strains and Treatemnt-3 strain. Treatment-4 strain had the fastest growth rate, whereas the lowest performing strain was that from Treatment-2. We also analyzed survival rate of the fish from stocking to harvest, survival rate was highest in Treatment-4 strain (80%) where lowest is Treatment-3. Treatment-4 stain also showed the best feed conversion ratio (FCR) 1.62 than others. Considering the overall performance it can be concluded that tilapia strain collected from Breeding Cohort source is best among the four strains. However, further research may still be needed to compare more strains from different water body to evaluate the genetic potential for Tilapia.International Journal of Natural Sciences (2015), 5(2) 98-106

Two trials were conducted to determine feed color effects on broiler performance. A completely randomized design was used. Trial 1 included four treatments: control (complete broiler starter diet), red, green, and blue; and Trial 2 included four treatments: control, orange, yellow, and purple. Each trial had 4 treatments with 4 replicates (60 birds/treatment) fed to 240 male Cobb 500 broilers during a 21 d grow out. Data were analyzed using the GLM procedure. In Trial 1, there were no treatment effects on average body weight, body weight gain, and feed consumption (p > 0.05). Adjusted feed conversion for control (1.23) was less than red (1.27; p = 0.001) and green (1.26; p = 0.009), with blue (1.25; p = 0.056) tending to be different during the experimental period. In Trial 2, there were no treatment effects on average body weight, feed consumption, and adjusted feed conversion during this study (p > 0.05). Body weight gain between d 1 to 14 for purple (490.78 g/bird) was more than orange (467 g/bird; p = 0.013) and yellow (461 g/bird; p= 0.004), with control (474 g/bird; p = 0.052) tending to be different. Results indicate that these feed colors had some, albeit limited, influence on broiler performance parameters.

Parameter yang diamati meliputi pertambahan berat badan, konsumsi ransum, konversi ransum (FCR), mortalitas, dan Income over Feed and Chick Cost (IOFCC). (Evaluation of performances and income over feed chick cost (iofcc) of three broiler chicken strains commonly marketed in Aceh) ABSTRACT. The study aimed to evaluate the performances and Income over Feed and Chick Cost (IOFCC) of three broiler chicken strains commonly marketed in Aceh. As many as 150 chicks of three different broiler strains (50 birds each) were used in this study. The study was performed into Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consists of 3 treatments and 5 replications creating 15 experimental units containing 10 birds each. The treatments were 3 different strains of broiler chickens i.e. Cobb 500, CP 707, and MB 202. The birds were reared up to 6 weeks to expose their performances recorded as final body weight, body weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion, as well as mortality. Economic value was evaluated by calculating IOFCC. Results of study showed that performances of broilers were significantly (P0,05) influenced by the strains. Strains MB 202 and CP 707 represented more superior than Cobb 500 for 5−6 weeks of raising periods. However, the later was not inferior during initial phase close to 4 weeks. There were no significant differences in FCR among all strains for different ages. The IOFCC related to the strains and their marketing ages. The highest IOFCC was obtained by Cobb 500, CP 707, and MB 202 as they were sold at the ages of 4, 5, and 6 weeks, respectively. In conclusion, the achievements of the performances in various broiler strains were affected by the site climate (Aceh) in different stages of their ages. Cobb 500 had proper adaptation during starter, while CP 707 and MB 202 appeared seem to be better than Cobb 500 during finisher period.

Abstract The Normal Feathered local chicken (LL), Sasso-RIR (SRSR) and their F1-cross (LSR) chickens were hatched to evaluated for egg hatchability, growth performance, feed efficiency and survival rate. After 14-days of brooding, 150 chicks of each genotype were randomly selected and further replicated in to five pens in a deep litter grower house consisting of 30 chicks each in a completely randomized design, and evaluated for a period of 16-weeks. Hatchability of fertile eggs was highest for LL (80.0 %), intermediate for LSR (68.6%) and lowest for SRSR (55.9%) chickens. The body weight (BW) of chicks at 2-weeks of age was 80.0, 76.3 and 61.5 g/bird for SRSR, LSR, and LL, respectively, the latter being the lowest (p<0.05). The respective BW at 8-weeks of age was 732, 587 and 451 g while at 18-weeks it was 1877, 1379 and 1070 g/bird and different from each other (p<0.05). During 3- to 8-weeks and 9- to 18-weeks growth periods, the LL chickens were inferior (p< 0.05) in feed intake (29.7 and 66.9 g/d/bird) whereas the SRSR chickens were superior (p< 0.05) in body weight gain (15.5 and 16.3 g/d/bird) and feed conversion ratio (2.67 and 5.35 g feed/ g gain), respectively. The mortality rate of chicken was not affected by genotypes. It can be concluded that the exotic blood of Sasso-RIR chicken had played a significant role in upgrading the growth rate and market weight of the local Normal Feathered chicken without adverse effect on hatchability, feed efficiency, and survival rate.

The aim of the study was to compare the body weight gain and survival rate of lambs receiving a milk replacer as supplementary feed with lambs reared traditionally. The research was conducted in a flock of Polish Heath sheep. Of 244 lambs born, 42 lambs from multiple births were given supplementary feed. The lambs received the milk replacer until the 35th day of rearing. Body weight was monitored at birth and on days 28, 56 and 100 of life. Reproductive parameters and survival rate of lambs were derived from breeding documentation. There were no significant differences in the survival rate of lambs in the two groups, which was above 80%. The average birth weight of lambs reared traditionally and of those receiving the milk replacer was similar. During the entire rearing period, the lambs that required supplementary feeding grew more slowly. Twin lambs receiving the supplement and twin lambs reared traditionally had similar body weight and daily gains up to the 56th day of life, but the twin lambs receiving supplementary feed had a significantly lower body weight at day 100 and growth rate during the entire rearing period. The growth rate of triplets fed supplementary milk replacer was not significantly different from that of triplets reared traditionally in any period of the study.

The dietary chitosan has been largely used in the supplemental diets of terrestrial animals to improve growth and development. However, there is little information on the roles of dietary chitosan in growth and development of aquatic animals like fishes. Thus, this study aimed at determining the effects of dietary chitosan on growth performances and survival of Barbonymus gonionotus fry. A total of 600 B. gonionotus fry (2.12±0.02 g) were considered for this study. This experiment consisted of four treatments (0, 1, 2 and 3 g Kg-1 formulated feeds) and each treatment had three replications with a stocking density of 50 fry/tank. The dietary chitosan was supplied as 8% of body weight of each fry twice daily for 60 days. Fish fry treated with the dietary chitosan exhibited significant (P < 0.05) improvement in growth (body weight gain, % body weight gain, specific growth rate, and feed conversion ratio) and survival of B. gonionotus in comparison with untreated control. The water quality parameters, such as temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen showed no significant variations, and maintained suitable range throughout the study period for fish growth. Among the treatments, application of 1 g chitosan kg-1 feed showed the highest positive effects on growth and survival of B. gonionotus fry, indicating their potentials for practical application in promoting sustainable aquaculture. In the present study effects of different levels of hydrolyzed oak tannin on Japanese quail, live body weight and live body weight gain, food intake, food conversion efficiency and mortality rate were investigated. Therefore, a total of 240 quails were weighed and divided into 4 treatment groups each with 3 replicates containing 20 birds and reared in flat for 42 days as experimental period. While one of the groups was fed control diet with no additives (0% tannin A), other groups were fed with the different percentages of tannin on their diets, which are 0.5% (B), 1.0% (C), 1.5% (D) respectively. It has been observed that Japanese quails that fed the oak tannin containing diet had slower growth rate and poorer feed conversion efficiency and high mortality rate than birds fed with a tannin-free diet.

The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of L-carnitine and Yeast chromium supplementation on the productive performance of Pekin and Sudani duckling breeds. A total number of 450 both unsexed Pekin and Sudani ducklings (225 per each breed) one-day-old were investigated in the current study. The experimental period lasted 12 weeks of age. Experimental ducklings were randomly divided into the 5 equal treatments with 90 ducklings (45 number from both Pekin and Sudani ducklings per each). Each experimental treatment was randomly divided into 3 equal replicates of 30 ducklings (15 ducklings in each breed). The five experimental treatments were as follows: the first treatment was the control with basal diets, treatments 2 and 3 received basal diets supplemented with 300 and 450 mg/kg diet L-carnitine (LC), respectively, while treatments 4 and 5 received basal diets supplemented with 400 and 600 μg/kg diets Yeast chromium (Cr), respectively. The results indicated that growing duckling fed diets supplemented with LC and Cr were significantly improved in live body weight, body weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio. The relative weight of carcass quality and weight of lymphoid organs significantly increased with supplemented diets. Therefore, both duckling breeds fed on diets supplemented with 450 mg LC/kg resulted in better performance without any adverse effect on carcass quality as well as economic efficiency.
