The article deals with the problem of free time hospitalized children. Characterizes children's free time and analyzing psychotherapeutic support options pediatric patients. Also draws attention also to this new innovative way psychotherapeutic support and leisure activities such as children of cancer patients through their visits to the Zoo. Highlights the effectiveness of this type of leisure time as an effective psychotherapeutic support these children. Describes this possibility, which has become an established tradition in hospital in Brno in the oncology clinic at Black fields. Documented so extremely interesting use of free time, which featured a form of psychotherapy has a very positive meaning for hospitalized pediatric patient. Significantly contributes to mental balance and well-being child patient, which is currently in the oncology area (and obviously not in it) extremely important in the overall treatment process.

Aim: In this study, it was aimed to examine the communication levels of female volleyball players according to their leisure time activities. In addition, the communication levels of the participants according to their age, education, years of doing sports and the number of siblings were also examined. Method: Our sample group consists of 147 female volleyball players who played volleyball in volleyball clubs in Kütahya and Tekirdağ provinces in 2019. Descriptive research method was used in the research. Data were collected from volunteer participants by using the “Communication Skills Assessment Scale” (CIDI) developed by Korkut (1996). The scale has a single sub-dimension and consists of 25 items and the Cronbach Alpha value was found to be .86. By directing distribution normality to parametric tests, multiple frequency analysis, one-way variance and correlation analyzes were applied. Results: While there is no significant difference between age, education, number of siblings and communication skills of female volleyball players, there is a significant difference according to the year of doing sports and leisure time activities. The communication level of female volleyball players who have been playing sports for 4-9 years is higher than those who have been doing sports for 10 years or more. In addition, those who read books in their free time got the highest score, and those who went to the movies got the lowest score. In the correlation analysis, there is a weak positive relationship between the communication levels of volleyball players with reading books, and a weak negative relationship with the scores of going to the movies. Conclusion: According to the data results of 147 female volleyball players participating in the study, the communication skill scores of female volleyball players reading books in leisure activities were higher than the others.

The aim of this study is to determine whether psychological well-being statuses of university students according to their genders, their leisure negotiation strategies and their leisure exercise participation have been differentiated or not and detect the relationship between psychological well-being, leisure negotiation strategies and leisure activities participation of students. Sample of the study consisted of 400 female and 400 male making 800 students at total. As data collection tool in the study was used Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire, Psychological well- being scales and Leisure Negotiation Scale.  Mann-Whitney U test was used with the purpose of identifying difference, Pearson product–moment and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was used for correlation in the study. Consequently, psychological well-being of students shows positive linear relationship with both leisure negotiation strategies and leisure exercise participations. While psychological well-being statutes of students and leisure exercise participations show significant difference with respect their genders, leisure negotiation strategies do not. According to these results, while psychological well-being of females is higher, leisure exercise participations are lower with respect to males. ÖzetBu araştırmanın amacı; üniversite öğrencilerinin cinsiyetlerine göre psikolojik iyi olma durumlarının, serbest zaman engelleriyle baş etme stratejilerinin ve serbest zaman egzersiz katılımlarının farklılaşıp farklılaşmadığını tespit etmek ve öğrencilerin psikolojik iyi olma durumlarının, serbest zaman engelleriyle baş etme stratejileri ve serbest zaman egzersiz katılımları ile ilişkisini saptamaya yöneliktir. Araştırmanın örneklemini 400 kadın, 400 erkek toplam 800 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak; Serbest Zaman Egzersiz Anketi, Psikolojik İyi Olma Ölçekleri ve Serbest Zaman Engelleri ile Baş Etme Stratejileri Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada farklılığı tespit etmek amacıyla Mann-Whitney U testi, korelasyon için Pearson çarpım-moment ve Spearman'ın sıralama korelasyon katsayıları kullanılmıştır. Sonuç olarak; öğrencilerin psikolojik iyi olma durumları serbest zaman engelleriyle baş etme stratejileri ve serbest zaman egzersiz katılımlarıyla pozitif doğrusal yönde ilişki göstermektedir. Cinsiyetlerine göre psikolojik iyi olma durumları ve serbest zaman egzersizine katılımları anlamlı farklılık gösterirken, serbest zaman engelleriyle baş etme stratejileri farklılık göstermemektedir. Buna göre; kadınların psikolojik iyi olma durumları daha yüksek iken serbest zaman egzersiz katılımları erkeklere göre daha düşüktür.

An overview of the research into digital leisure that has intensified in recent decades is presented. When studying this issue, a variety of interdisciplinary integrations and collaborations arise, which made it possible to identify positive and negative trends, as well as promising directions for the development of this segment of leisure activities. In particular, foreign studies have established vectors for the development of digital leisure associated with overcoming the dichotomy of the workspace and the recreational sphere, gamification of work processes, the simultaneous execution of several types of activities, including leisure. The “digital turn” leads to the deterritorialization of space and leisure time, overcoming the inequality of resources and opportunities, contributes to personalization, privatization, simplification and marketization of the public sphere, and stimulates a recreational and entertainment model of behavior. Digital technologies, on the one hand, alienate family members, and on the other, connect physically separated friends and relatives. At the same time, online activity reduces the time for communication with other people, sports activities and amateur creativity. On this basis, a variety of Internet addictions and addictive behavior arise. According to the research results, it was found that digital leisure significantly affects the indicators of well-being of older people: their physical and cognitive functioning is optimized, intergenerational interactions improve, and social isolation decreases.

This study explored narratives derived from in-depth interviews to demonstrate how an increase in leisure time could positively affect both our subjective well-being, through a better balance of work and “self”, and the environment, through a change in consumption practices. Firstly, the analysis of the interviews provided insight into the social function of work. Work creates feelings of connection and belonging; however, it can also create the opposite, negatively affecting our experience of leisure time, our productivity, and our well-being. Participants described how paid work provided structure and routine, which resulted in an increased feeling of subjective well-being. However, a lack of structure and routine during the COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected feelings of “usefulness” and “productivity”. Secondly, an increase in leisure time created more opportunities for autonomy, leading to more unforced leisure activities and a better balance between work and self. Moreover, an increase in autonomy could be achieved through both increased work flexibility and a shorter working week. Lastly, this study aimed to demonstrate that more leisure time during lockdown periods can change how we spend our free time, therefore resulting in more pro-environmental consumer behaviour. This study intended to contribute to a gap in the literature: effects of leisure time on the balance between work and the “self”. The research setting offered limited opportunities for researching intentional, sustainable consumer behaviour, which provides an opportunity for further research.

The aging population is rapidly growing both in the United States and many other parts of the world. Simultaneously, technology is rapidly progressing, and new forms of media have become integrated into daily life and societal participation. This study uses time diary data from a panel survey of members of nationally representative households ( N = 1776) to explore patterns of media use and functionally equivalent leisure time among older adults. The data support a three-profile typology of older adult use of media and non-media leisure activities. These include the computer socializer, the hobbyist, and the television watcher. We elaborate on these patterns of use and explore correlates with demographic and well-being variables. We find no evidence that well-being significantly differs across profiles of media use but identify income and employment status as potential drivers of older adults’ media activity, with implications for digital inequalities.

Orientation: Associations between a person’s character strengths, happiness and well-being can be explained with the overlap that they have with personality. Casino employees’ working hours were and are increasing, which means that their leisure time is decreasing concomitantly, with only 20 hours per week being used in pursuit of leisure activities.Research purpose: The primary purpose of this research was to investigate 1502 casino employees’ personality types and the relationship it has on their leisure life and overall happiness.Motivation for the study: The importance of leisure participation and time to take part in leisure activities, and the effect it has on casino employees’ happiness in the workplace, warrants further investigation. If human resources managers and general management want happier casino employees in the workplace, they should focus on their personality types and make more leisure activities available to them; which will result in a happier workforce.Research design, approach and method: The target population consisted of 3032 casino employees, who received the questionnaires and were given the opportunity to complete the questionnaires anonymously. An availability sampling technique was used, based on the number of casino employees who were willing and available to complete the questionnaires.Main findings and practical/managerial implications: In terms of the structural equation modelling, it was found that the positive personalities such as extraversion and openness to experience correlated well with leisure life and happiness. In this study, the standardised regression weights showed that if an individual has a negative personality, he or she will not necessarily be unhappy. A positive relationship was found between positive personality traits such as cooperativeness and agreeableness and leisure life and happiness. Considering mediation effects, leisure preference was the greatest partial mediator between happiness and personalities.Contribution: Human resource managers of casino establishments can use these results to determine the type of personality of casino employees that will experience a good leisure life and happiness in relation to the workplace, contributing to positive psychology and human resource literature. This work contains a narrative review of the effects of different types of play in the well-being of hospitalized children. For this purpose, the literature highlighting the evidence that supports the use of different types of play to improve children's hospitalization experience was analyzed. These types of play are medical games, playing with dolls, puppets, or marionettes, playing with pets, and digital or video-games. All of them can improve children's experience of hospitalization. Despite everything, children can play a lot of things in the hospital, and recreational resources make important contributions to hospitalized children's well-being. Play is children's right, also in the hospital, and is a particularly important resource to improve the care that pediatric patients receive in health institutions.

This day-level study examines links between the amount of leisure time devoted to social, physical, and low-effort activities after the workday and affective well-being at bedtime. A sample of 95 office-based workers completed surveys over four consecutive days at bedtime (380 data points). Results revealed a within-person effect of leisure activity on daily affective well-being. Participants consistently reported enhanced mood before sleep on days when they spent more hours engaging in physical and social activities compared to their personal average number of hours spent on these activities across the four days of the study. However, on days when more hours were spent on low-effort activity, participants consistently reported decreased positive emotions. This suggests that time allocation to certain leisure activities may better support well-being on a daily basis. Discussion focuses on the implications of these findings for helping individuals enhance their evening leisure experiences by making astute leisure choices.

BackgroundThere is a growing number of studies indicating the major consequences of the subjective perception of well-being on mental health and healthcare use. However, most of the cognitive training research focuses more on the preservation of cognitive function than on the implications of the state of well-being. This secondary analysis of data from a randomised controlled trial investigated the effects of individualised television-based cognitive training on self-rated well-being using the WHO-5 index while considering gender and education as influencing factors. The effects of cognitive training were compared with leisure activities that the elderly could be engaged in to pass time.MethodsCognitively healthy participants aged 60 years or above screened using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Major Depression Inventory (MDI) were randomly allocated to a cognitive training group or to an active control group in a single-blind controlled two-group design and underwent 24 training sessions. Data acquired from the WHO-5 questionnaire administered before and after intervention were statistically analysed using a mixed design model for repeated measures. The effect of individualised cognitive training was compared with leisure activities while the impact of gender and education was explored using estimated marginal means.ResultsA total of 81 participants aged 67.9 ± 5.59 [60–84] without cognitive impairments and absent of depression symptoms underwent the study. Participants with leisure time activities declared significantly higher scores compared to participants with cognitive trainingM = 73.48 ± 2.88, 95% CI [67.74–79.22] vsM = 64.13 ± 3.034, 95% CI [58.09–70.17] WHO-5 score. Gender and education were found to moderate the effect of cognitive training on well-being when compared to leisure activities. Females engaged in leisure activities in the control group reported higher byM = 9.77 ± 5.4, 95% CI [−0.99–20.54] WHO-5 scores than females with the cognitive training regimen. Participants with high school education declared leisure activities to increase WHO-5 scores byM = 14.59 ± 5.39, 95% CI [3.85–25.34] compared to individualised cognitive training.DiscussionThe findings revealed that individualised cognitive training was not directly associated with improvements in well-being. Changes in the control group indicated that involvement in leisure time activities, in which participants were partly free to choose from, represented more favourable stimulation to a self-perceived sense of well-being than individualised cognitive training. Results also supported the fact that gender and education moderated the effect of cognitive training on well-being. Females and participants with high school education were found to be negatively impacted in well-being when performance connected with cognitive training was expected.

AbstractAs the main tension in Chinese society has become that between people's growing need for a better life and unbalanced and inadequate development, leisure activities have become a main factor affecting the subjective well-being of Chinese residents. This study uses micro data from the 2019–2020 Chinese Residents’ Economic Life Survey as the sample, applies the latent class analysis (LCA) method to conduct a joint analysis of all leisure activities of individuals, and then divides individual leisure time modes into four types: general leisure, stationary leisure, family-friendly leisure and sports/health care-related leisure. To overcome endogeneity problems from missing variables, sample selection bias, and two-way causality, this paper uses the Heckman two-step and propensity score matching methods to empirically analyse the impacts of residents' leisure time allocation patterns on individual subjective well-being. The study finds that sports/health care-type leisure is most helpful in improving individual subjective well-being, followed by general leisure, family-friendly leisure and stationary leisure, which have relatively weaker impacts on subjective well-being. The estimation results remain robust and reliable after we introduce the idea of ​​misclassification probability to test the robustness of the findings. On this basis, a group heterogeneity analysis by region, income level, education level, marital status and age is carried out. The research conclusions of this article can help guide residents in rationally allocating their leisure time and provide a policy reference for the construction of leisure facilities in China’s cities.
