Most species of Cucurbitaceae respond favorably to irrigation, especially when combined with fertilizers. The effect of drip irrigation combined with nitrogen fertigation in melon grown on a very light soil in Central Poland, during 2013–2015, was evaluated. The field experimental design was a split-plot with four replications. Two factors were studied: (1) irrigation treatments applied in two combinations—drip irrigation + broadcast nitrogen fertilization (control), and drip irrigation + fertigation with nitrogen; (2) two cultivars—Melba and Seledyn. The total marketable yield of fruits, weight of a single fruit, and the concentration of dry matter, total sugars, monosaccharides, ascorbic acid, total carotenoids, and polyphenols were evaluated. Tested factors presented a significant effect both on the yield and nutritive value characteristics. Drip irrigation combined with nitrogen fertigation, comparing to the control, notably improved yields and nutritional value of fruits. Seledyn produced better yields than Melba. This study shows that on very light soil, with low water and nutrient retention capacity, melon should be drip-irrigated and nitrogen-fertigated to obtain the best cultivation results.

The effect of nitrogen fertigation of two watermelon cultivars grown on the very light soil in the central part of Poland, during 2012–2014, was evaluated. The field experimental design was a split-plot with four replications. The main plot was the drip fertigation with nitrogen applied in two combinations: drip irrigation + broadcasted nitrogen fertilization (DI) used as a control, and drip irrigation + fertigation with nitrogen (DF); where, two cultivars: Bingo and Sugar Baby were used as a split-plot. The phosphorus and potassium fertilizers were applied pre plant in the spring, whereas, three rates of 40 kg ha−1 of nitrogen fertilizer were applied during the growing season. The fertigation was performed using a proportional mixing dispenser. The ripened fruits were harvested progressively as they mature. The marketable fruit yield, the single fruit weight and the number of fruits per plant, were evaluated. Tested factors presented a significant effect in the yield characteristics, further the interaction among the factors was important. DF, comparing to DI, notably improved fruit traits. Bingo cultivar had higher yield than Sugar Baby, but Sugar Baby cultivar produced more fruits than the Bingo under the DF treatment. This study provides the evidence that on a very light soil with low water and nutrients retention capacity the performance of watermelon can be optimized when nitrogen is applied directly through drip irrigation.

Cape Verde is a semiarid country where lack of rainfall exacerbates the scarce resources available for livestock which, therefore, make it very vulnerable to climate change. By providing reclaimed water (RW) for irrigation, it is possible to decrease forage importation. Subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) improves health security by preventing contact between water and harvested plants. Sorghum is a water-efficient crop that provides good nutritional value. The aim of this experiment was to study the nutrient and fiber contents of the Sorghum Payenne variety using subsurface (T1) and surface (T2) drip irrigation by RW vs. conventional water (T3) and plant maturity to assure the feasibility of water reuse to produce forage. Ntot–Ptot–Ca–Mg and Na were significantly higher in the RW plants than in the conventional water ones. Ntot–Ptot–K and Fe contents significantly lowered, while Ca–Na and Mn significantly rose as plant maturity increased. All the fiber values meet the Nos. 2 and 3 quality standards, and the Prime and No. 1 for NDF and ADF, respectively. The obtained good forage quality let to avoid the competence of conventional water and to reuse nutrients added by RW. If generalized, this solution would reduce forage importation by improving food sovereignty and farmers’ profitability, and would enhance resilience against climate change effects.

Two experiments were carried out to ascertain the nutritional value of potato waste meal (PW) as a replacement for corn in practical poultry diets using 320 male and 320 female Cobb chicks fed from 1-day-old to 46 days (exp. 1) and 49 days (exp. 2) a basal cereal-based diet containing soybean and fishmeals or test diets each containing 50 g, 100 g, 150 g, 200 g and 300 g PW/kg. In both experiments, the diets were analyzed for elemental and amino acid composition, and the growth responses on the test diets were evaluated individually over a period of 28 days and 46 days or 49 days of ad libitum feeding. Although PW appeared limiting with respect to methionine and cystine, arginine and the aromatic amino acids, it was found that upon supplementation with methionine (0.5 g/kg), the test mixtures exhibited a synergistic effect compared with controls, and that this potato byproduct can be considered a good substitute ingredient for a proportion (200 g/kg) of the ground corn in a practical diet for broiler chickens. Feeding PW at a rate of up to 200 g/kg resulted in optimum biological response and monetary returns. The inclusion of up to 300 g/kg PW in the diets did not increase wetness of the litter or hardness of pellets, two factors reported earlier which could limit the use of PW in animal diets. Abstract This study correlated Brix values (measure of total dissolved solids via refractometer) with wet-lab analyses (WLA) of sugar concentrations in fresh herbage of two forage species, alfalfa (ALF; Medicago sativa) and orchardgrass (ORG; Dactylis glomerata) to estimate energy value of pastures. Four monthly samplings occurred from May-August, 2019. At each sampling, eight ALF and ORG samples were collected from established monocultures of each species. Solubles were extracted from fresh herbage using a hand-held garlic press. Triplicate Brix readings were recorded per sample using a digital refractometer. Fresh herbage samples were flash-frozen in liquid N, freeze-dried, and analyzed via WLA for total and individual (glucose and fructose) sugar concentrations, as well as nutritive value (CP, NDF, and ADF; Agri-King, Inc., Fulton, IL). The TDN, RFV, and RFQ were calculated. Brix values were correlated with WLA using the PROC CORR procedure in SAS, with significance established at P < 0.05 and trends at 0.05 < P < 0.10. Brix values were negatively correlated (P < 0.001) with WLA of total sugars (-0.65), glucose (-0.6), and fructose (-0.68) in ORG while no significant correlations (P > 0.10) were detected in ALF. Conversely, Brix values of ORG and ALF were positively correlated (P < 0.01) with NDF (0.57 – 0.58) and hemicellulose (0.42 – 0.55), as well as with ADF in ALF (0.54). Brix was negatively correlated (P < 0.05) with CP in ALF (-0.41), but there was no correlation (P > 0.10) with ORG. No correlations (P > 0.10) were detected between Brix and TDN, RFV, and RFQ. These results indicate that the Brix index does not directly translate to forage quality, particularly sugar concentrations, of ALF and ORG, and may inadvertently select herbage with increased fiber concentrations. Producers should consider more accurate methods, such as WLA, for assessing energy value of pastures.

The experiment was carried out between 2010 and 2012. Effect of plants covering and the kind of organic mulch applied to soil mulching on the yield and selected component of nutritive value in Milady F<sub>1</sub> broccoli cultivated for early harvest was investigated. The application of polypropylene fibre contributed to a significant increase in the marketable yield of broccoli on average by 5.25 t/ha, weight of head by 0.10 kg and length of arc by 1.44 cm. Increase of the content of chemical components as a result of plants covering amounted to 1.76% for dry matter,&nbsp;2.50 mg/100 g fresh matter (FM) for ascorbic acid, 0.65% FM for total sugar and 0.15% FM for monosaccharides. All kinds of straw contributed to an increase in the broccoli yield and improvement its parameters. The highest marketable yield and weight of head was obtained in the plots mulched with buckwheat straw. Irrespective of covering, cultivation on the mulch with buckwheat straw contributed to a slight decrease in dry matter, total sugars content, whereas cultivation on the rye straw decreased ascorbic acid content.

Drip-irrigation scheduling techniques for fresh-market tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) production were compared in three growing seasons (1989-91). Three regimes were evaluated: EPK [reference evapotranspiration (ETo, corrected Penman) × programmed crop coefficients], ECC (ET0 × a crop coefficient based on estimated percent canopy coverage), and SMD (irrigation at 20% available soil moisture depletion). EPK coefficients ranged from 0.2 (crop establishment) to 1.1 (full canopy development). Percent canopy coverage was estimated from average canopy width ÷ row width. Irrigation in the SMD treatment was initiated at -24 kPa soil matric tension, with recharge limited to 80% of daily ET0. The EPK and ECC regimes gave similar fresh fruit yields and size distributions in all years. With the EPK scheduling technique, there was no difference in crop response between daily irrigation and irrigation three times per week. In all seasons, ECC scheduling resulted in less total water applied than EPK scheduling and averaged 76% of seasonal ET0 vs. 86% for EPK. Irrigating at 20% SMD required an average of only 64% of seasonal ET0; marketable yield was equal to the other scheduling techniques in 1989 and 1991, but showed a modest yield reduction in 1990. Using an SMD regime to schedule early season irrigation and an ECC system to guide application from mid-season to harvest may be the most appropriate approach for maximizing water-use efficiency and crop productivity.

A field experiment on cauliflower with different drip irrigation and NK fertigation levels was conducted at Rajendranagar, Hyderabad, Telangana during rabi 2019-2020. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with nine treatments, comprising of three drip irrigation regimes viz., 0.6 Epan (I1), 0.8 Epan (I2) and 1.0 Epan (I3) as main plots and three drip NK fertigation levels of control (N0K0-F1), 50 % recommended dose of NK (N40 K50- F2) and 100 % recommended dose of NK (N80 K100- F3) as sub plots and replicated thrice. Growth and yield attributes were significantly higher at irrigation scheduled at 1.0 Epan. Plant height and yield attributes were comparable between 1.0 Epan and 0.8 Epan. Whereas plant height and dry matter production between 0.8 and 0.6 Epan were comparable. Drip irrigation scheduled at 1.0 Epan recorded significantly higher curd yield (18.7 t ha-1) than 0.8 Epan (17.1 t ha-1) and 0.6 Epan (15.0 t ha-1). NPK uptake were significantly higher in irrigation scheduled at 1.0 Epan than 0.8 and 0.6 Epan.  All growth, yield attributes and NPK uptake at harvest increased significantly with increase in NK fertigation level from control to 100% recommended dose of NK. Drip fertigation at 100 %  recommended dose of NK recorded significantly higher curd yield (23.8 t ha-1) than 50 % recommended dose of NK (19.7 t ha-1) and N0K0 (7.2 t ha-1).  Application of 1.0 E Pan irrigation and 100% recommended dose of NK performed better than other treatments.

<p>Kentang merupakan sayuran yang memiliki prospek untuk mendukung program diversifikasi pangan. Akan tetapi saat ini produksi di dalam negeri masih rendah akibat penggunaan benih yang kurang bermutu. Sistem irigasi tetes berpeluang untuk diterapkan pada produksi benih kentang G0. Penelitian  bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh frekuensi dan volume fertigasi terhadap produksi benih G0 kentang pada sistem irigasi tetes. Penelitian  dilaksanakan sejak bulan Mei sampai dengan September 2016 di Rumah Kassa Desa Cikahuripan, Lembang, Bandung Barat, Jawa Barat dengan ketinggian 1.200 m dpl. Percobaan menggunakan rancangan petak terpisah (split plot design) dengan rancangan acak kelompok lengkap dan tiga ulangan. Sebagai petak utama adalah frekuensi fertigasi sebanyak 3, 5, dan 7 kali. Sebagai anak petak adalah volume fertigasi (ml) setiap aplikasi, yaitu 100, 200, 300, dan 400. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan tidak terjadi interaksi antara perlakuan frekuensi dan volume fertigasi terhadap semua peubah pengamatan. Frekuensi fertigasi terbaik terhadap bobot ubi per tanaman umur 100 HST adalah lima kali, yaitu jam 7, 10, 12, 14, dan 16. Volume fertigasi terbaik terhadap jumlah ubi ukuran besar umur 100 HST adalah 300 ml per aplikasi per polibag. Volume dan frekuensi fertigasi terbaik ini diharapkan tidak saja meningkatkan produksi benih, tetapi juga keuntungan usahatani yang diperoleh. Perlu dilakukan penelitian lebih lanjut untuk menginduksi pengumbian dengan mengalihkan ukuran ubi menjadi peningkatan jumlah ubi sebagai tujuan produksi benih G0.</p><p><strong>Keywords</strong></p><p><em>Solanum</em> tuberosum L.; Irigasi tetes; Fertigasi; Frekuensi; Volume</p><p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p>Potato is one of vegetables that can be used as an alternative to support food diversification programs. But the potato production domestically is still low because of low quality seed. One of the potato seed technologies that can be developed is arragement of fertigation volumes and frequencies on drip fertigation. The objective of this research was to determine the best fertigation volume and frequency in G0 potato seed production in drip irrigation. This research was conducted from May to September 2016 at Screen House Cikahuripan Village, Lembang, Bandung on 1,200 m asl. The treatments were arranged in split plot design with randomized complete block design and three replications. The main plot was fertigation frequency which was consisted of three levels; 3, 5, and 7 times per day. The subplot was fertigation volume which was consisted of four levels; 100, 200, 300, and 400 ml per aplication. The result showed there was no interaction between fertigation frequency and volume on all observation. The best fertigation frequency on tuber weight per plant at 100 day after planting was five  times, i.e. 7, 10, 12, 14, and 16 o’clock. The best fertigation volume on number of big tuber at 100 day after planting was 300 ml per application. The best fertigation volume and frequency will increase not only seed production, but also profit of bussiness. Next research will be done to induction tuberization by transfering measurement of tuber to increase the amount of tuber as goal of production of G0 potato seed.</p><p> </p>

Pandan is part of the marine pandanus plants that are yellow to orange. Pandan fruit has the potential to be a source of natural dyes yellow and orange. Dyes obtained from pandan fruit are unstable. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the type of packaging and storage temperature on the characteristics of fruit powder and to determine the type of packaging and the best temperature for storing pandan powder. The design in this study used a completely randomized design with two factors. Factor I is a packaging treatment consisting of 4 types of packaging, namely polypropylene, polyethylene, aluminum foil, and brown paper. Factor II is the temperature consisting of two levels, namely 4º±2ºC and 27º±2ºC. The results showed that the temperature had a very significant effect (P<0,01) on water content and total carotene but did not have a significant effect (P>0,05) on the reddish value (L*), the reddish value (a*), reddish value (b*). The packaging type has a very significant effect (P<0.01) on water content and total carotene, but does not have a significant effect (P>0,05) on the reddish value (L*), the reddish value (a*), reddish value (b*), the most stable treatment in aluminum foil and cold temperatures 4 ± 2ºC for 4 weeks of storage, with the percentage of moisture content, total carotenoids, color intensity (L *, a *, b *) in the amount of 14.00%, 17.86%, 34,89%, 43,88%, 22,76% Keywords: pandanus (Pandanus tectorius), carotene, type of packaging, storage temperature.
