Magnetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Fe3O4-MSNs) were successfully synthesized with a relatively high surface area of 568 m2g−1. Fe3O4-MSNs were then modified with poly(2-diethyl aminoethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) brushes using surface-initiated ARGET atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) (Fe3O4@MSN-PDMAEMA). Since the charge of PDEAEMA is externally regulated by solution pH, tertiary amines in the polymer chains were quaternized using 2-iodoethanol to obtain cationic polymer chains with a permanent positive charge (Fe3O4@MSN-QPDMAEMA). The intensity of the C−O peak in the C1s X-ray photoelectron spectrum increased after reaction with 2-iodoethanol, suggesting that the quaternization process was successful. The applicability of the synthesized materials on the removal of methyl orange (MO), and sunset yellow (E110) dyes from an aqueous solution was examined. The effects of pH, contact time, and initial dyes concentrations on the removal performance were investigated by batch experiments. The results showed that the Fe3O4@MSN-PDMAEMA sample exhibited a weak adsorption performance toward both MO and E110, compared with Fe3O4@MSN-QPDMAEMA at a pH level above 5. The maximum adsorption capacities of MO and E110 using Fe3O4@MSN-QPDMAEMA were 294 mg g−1 and 194.8 mg g−1, respectively.

Corals-like molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) have been successfully synthesized via the hydrothermal method. The as-prepared MoS2 material with a high surface area of 83.9 m2.g-1 was used for the removal of tartrazine from an aqueous solution. The effects of parameters including contact time, MoS2 dosage, and solution pH on adsorption capacity were studied. The optimal dosage of MoS2 for removing tartrazine was 0.08 g and the removal efficiency of tartrazine reached 81.5 % for 100 min of adsorption. The adsorption kinetics studies were carried out using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intra-particle diffusion models. The results showed that the pseudo-second-kinetic model better described the adsorption kinetics of tartrazine on MoS2 and film diffusion was the rate-limiting step. In addition, the adsorption capacity of MoS2 was also performed with various organic dyes such as nile blue, janus green B, and congo red.

The removal of water pollutants has been widely addressed for the conservation of the environment, and novel materials are being developed as adsorbent to address this issue. In this work, different residual biomasses were employed to prepare biosorbents applied to lead (Pb(II)) ion uptake. The choice of cassava peels (CP), banana peels (BP), yam peels (YP), and oil palm bagasse (OPB) was made due to the availability of such biomasses in the Department of Bolivar (Colombia), derived from agro-industrial activities. The materials were characterized by ultimate and proximate analysis, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis (BET), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) in order to determine the physicochemical properties of bioadsorbents. The adsorption tests were carried out in batch mode, keeping the initial metal concentration at 100 ppm, temperature at 30 °C, particle size at 1 mm, and solution pH at 6. The experimental results were adjusted to kinetic and isotherm models to determine the adsorption mechanism. The remaining concentration of Pb(II) in solution was measured by atomic absorption at 217 nm. The functional groups identified in FTIR spectra are characteristic of lignocellulosic materials. A high surface area was found for all biomaterials with the exception of yam peels. A low pore volume and size, related to the mesoporous structure of these materials, make these bioadsorbents a suitable alternative for liquid phase adsorption, since they facilitate the diffusion of Pb(II) ions onto the adsorbent structure. Both FTIR and EDS techniques confirmed ion precipitation onto adsorbent materials after the adsorption process. The adsorption tests reported efficiency values above 80% for YP, BP, and CP, indicating a good uptake of Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution. The results reported that Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second order best fit experimental data, suggesting that the adsorption process is governed by chemical reactions and multilayer uptake. The future prospective of this work lies in the identification of alternatives to reuse Pb(II)-contaminated biomasses after heavy metal adsorption, such as material immobilization.

The objective of this study is to compare the performances of catalytic ozonation processes of two activated carbons prepared from olive stone (ACOS) and apricot stone (ACAS) with commercial ones (granular activated carbon-GAC and powder activated carbon-PAC) in degradation of reactive azo dye (Reactive Red 195). The optimum conditions (solution pH and amount of catalyst) were investigated by using absorbencies at 532, 220 and 280 nm wavelengths. Pore properties of the activated carbon (AC) such as BET surface area, pore volume, pore size distribution, and pore diameter were characterized by N2 adsorption. The highest BET surface area carbon (1,275 m2/g) was obtained from ACOS with a particle size of 2.29 nm. After 2 min of catalytic ozonation, decolorization performances of ACOS and ACAS (90.4 and 91.3%, respectively) were better than that of GAC and PAC (84.6 and 81.2%, respectively). Experimental results showed that production of porous ACs with high surface area from olive and apricot stones is feasible in Turkey.

The application of an innovative, simple and low cost method was tested for the preparation of nanocrystalline iron hydroxides and oxyhydroxides; different iron precursors have been earlier used and combined to different volatile precipitating agents. The examined in the present product, akagan?ite [?-FeO(OH)], had high surface area and definite pore size distribution. The produced materials were examined in detail (i.e. by powder X-ray diffraction, TEM and nitrogen sorption measurement). Main aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of the prepared material in the removal of heavy and toxic metal cations, like Cd(II), from aqueous solutions; cadmium constitutes a priority pollutant. Sorption was found to depended on the solution pH and its ionic strength. Typical isotherm models were applied and calculated the values of maximum adsorbent capacity for the metal as well as that of the enthalpy change during the removal process.

The development of new styrene-based hyper-crosslinked nanocomposites (HCLN) containing mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) is reported here as a new strategy to obtain functional high surface area materials with an enhanced hydrophilic character. The HCLN composition, morphology and porous structure were analyzed using a multi-technique approach. The HCLN displayed a high surface area (above 1600 m2/g) and higher microporosity than the corresponding hyper-crosslinked neat resin. The enhanced adsorption properties of the HCLN towards polar organic dyes was demonstrated through the adsorption of a reactive dye, Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RB). In particular, the HCLN containing 5phr MSN showed the highest adsorption capacity of RB.

N-Dimethylnitrosamine (NDMA) has aroused increasing concern among public health agencies. It is necessary to develop some effective methods to remove NDMA from drinking water. A reductive process has been investigated as an alternative treatment method for NDMA removal from water. In this manuscript, zero-valent iron nanoparticles (ZVINPs) were synthesized, and then supported on mesoporous silica materials with high surface area (MCM-41) to prepare a stable ZVINP/MCM-41 nanocomposite. X-ray diffraction measurements showed the stabilization of the ZVINPs upon their support on MCM-41, which enhanced their activity. The ZVINP/MCM-41 nanocomposite was used for the catalytic reduction of NDMA in the model solution, and the results showed the dependency of the removal process on the ZVINP/MCM-41 mass, time of removal, and solution pH. The mechanism of NDMA reduction by ZVINP/MCM-41 was studied, and the results showed the conversion of NDMA to unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine, dimethylamine (DMA) and NH4+. The product analysis found that in the process of removal, adsorption and reduction existed at the same time.

Cancer treatment and therapy have made significant leaps and bounds in these past decades. However, there are still cases where surgical removal is impossible, metastases are challenging, and chemotherapy and radiotherapy pose severe side effects. Therefore, a need to find more effective and specific treatments still exists. One way is through the utilization of drug delivery agents (DDA) based on nanomaterials. In 2001, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were first used as DDA and have gained considerable attention in this field. The popularity of MSNs is due to their unique properties such as tunable particle and pore size, high surface area and pore volume, easy functionalization and surface modification, high stability and their capability to efficiently entrap cargo molecules. This review describes the latest advancement of MSNs as DDA for cancer treatment. We focus on the fabrication of MSNs, the challenges in DDA development and how MSNs address the problems through the development of smart DDA using MSNs. Besides that, MSNs have also been applied as a multifunctional DDA where they can serve in both the diagnostic and treatment of cancer. Overall, we argue MSNs provide a bright future for both the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

The aim of the present work was to design and synthesize of mesoporous silica nanoparticles as topical hydrogel formulation for inclusion of poorly water soluble antifungal drug like Luliconazole as a drug delivery platform. The SBA-15 was prepared to evaluate its application as a carrier for Luliconazole drug delivery. Its molecular size was suitable for incorporation in to the mesoporous of the SBA-15 materials. The SBA-15 was characterized by FTIR, UV analysis, Particle size, Transmission electron microscopy. The Synthesized Mesoporous silica i.e. SBA-15 was of mean particle size of 15 nm and specific area 283.763m2/g respectively. The results revealed that prepared mesoporous silica have small particle size, high surface area, and enhanced drug dissolution rate. The results obtained showed that Luliconazole was loaded with great efficiency into the SBA-15 which leads to enhanced diffusion of drug. Luliconazole hydrogel formulations improved medication permeation across the skin appropriate polymer was used to produce the formulation (Carbopol 934p and HPMC). The physiochemical parameters of all the established luliconazole formulations were assessed, including gel appearance, pH, viscosity, spreadability, globule size, Zeta potential, and drug content. Many of the above parameters yielded positive outcomes but F1 and F3 batch results was were unacceptable ranges. It can be assumed that the formulation F1 and F3 resulted in improved spreadability, stability, and homogeneity, as well as a stronger drug release analysis.

Abstract An amino-functionalized MIL-68(Al) metal-organic framework (amino-MIL-68(Al) MOF) was synthesized by solvothermal method and then characterized by FESEM, XRD, FTIR, EDX-mapping, and BET-BJH techniques. In order to predict arsenate (As(V)) removal, a robust quadratic model (R2 > 0.99, F-value = 2389.17 and p-value < 0.0001) was developed by the central composite design (CCD) method and then the genetic algorithm (GA) was utilized to optimize the system response and four independent variables. The results showed that As(V) adsorption on MOF was affected by solution pH, adsorbent dose, As(V) concentration and reaction time, respectively. Predicted and experimental As(V) removal efficiencies under optimal conditions were 99.45 and 99.87 %, respectively. The fitting of experimental data showed that As(V) adsorption on MOF is well described by the nonlinear form of the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic. At optimum pH 3, the maximum As(V) adsorption capacity was 74.29 mg/g. Thermodynamic studies in the temperature range of 25 to 50 °C showed that As(V) adsorption is a spontaneous endothermic process. The reusability of MOF in ten adsorption/regeneration cycles was studied and the results showed high reusability of this adsorbent. The highest interventional effect in inhibiting As(V) adsorption was related to phosphate anion. The results of this study showed that amino-MIL-68(Al) can be used as an effective MOF with a high surface area (> 1000 m2/g) and high reusability for As(V)-contaminated water.
